Remarks Dear Student, Welcome to Emlalatini Development Centre (EDC). You have undoubtedly made a very wise decision by enrolling with this esteemed institution.

OUR VISION:

“To be amongst the leading Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions of choice in the SADC region by the year 2022”

OUR MISSION:

“To use dedicated academic and support staff to provide access to quality and affordable Open and Distance Education to the youth and adults of Swaziland and the SADC region as a whole, cost-effectively and cost-efficiently. To continuously improve on our service delivery to reach the highest levels of excellence by integrating current and relevant information and communication systems (ICTs) in all departments.”

OUR MANDATE:

“To provide access to quality and affordable Junior and Higher Secondary Education to the youth and adults of Swaziland and beyond through Open and Distance Learning.”

We would like you, therefore, to tell us from time to time if we are still fulfilling our vision, our mission and our mandate. Feel free to comment on our Workbooks that we now call Modules, tutoring and all the services we provide so that we can improve. We really wish to render the best service to you. As a student of Emlalatini, you will be expected to participate in all activities designed for Emlalatini students. It may not be possible for you to attend all of them but we urge you to attend as many as you can. These activities are mainly tutorials or classes and trial and final year examinations. The tutorials are used for supporting the modules. In this handbook, we have written down all the activities and the dates which are important. Please note them and make arrangements with your employer if you are employed, to be permitted to attend. If your employer needs proof, you can collect a letter from the institution. We all know that studying at a distance is not easy so we have also compiled a few guidelines on how to study at a distance under “Study Skills”. Read them carefully and apply what you have learnt.

Emlalatini is on a mission to bring education to the people by establishing Study Centre’s in places near you. Find out from EDC if there is any operational study Centre around your area or in your nearest town. To help you cut down on travelling costs, make good use of your respective study Centre. A study Centre is managed by a Study Centre Coordinator whose responsibility is to ensure that learners register at their respective Centre and that they receive their study materials on time. Learners are expected to pay a study Centre fee of E300.00 at their respective study Centre. Contact the study Centre Coordinator near you for more details. When learners in a study Centre are 60 and above, EDC then hires teachers called Tutors to facilitate learning and teach you on Saturdays and during part of the school holidays. Encourage other potential learners around your area to enroll at EDC so that you can quickly reach 60. Study Centers

You are then supposed to study and finish all the modules per subject so that you finish the syllabus thus be ready for the examination.

F. LIST OF EDC ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES/ACADEMIC CALENDAR

At EDC, JC and SGCSE classes are conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays each academic week. There are no classes on public holidays. These classes are free. If there is something you don’t understand, you are free to visit your lecturer at EDC from Monday to Friday for a one-on-one face-to-face learning session.

NOTE: Time- tables are found towards the end of this handbook. Why is it important to attend?

i. You will be able to interact with other learners, lecturers and your tutors. ii. You will receive guidance and counselling on your subjects as a group.

iii. You will receive tutoring in specific and difficult subject concepts or areas. iv. You will be assisted by tutors on how best you can use the modules.

a) Cross-over or supplementary examinations and why is it important to write

these exams i. You will get a second chance to write the subjects that you failed the previous

academic year and you will also have all your difficulties and queries sorted out in

all the subject areas. This will increase your chances of passing the ECOS or Year-

end examinations.

ii. You will be able to discuss with other students in study groups if you have one or

form a study group if you do not belong to any.

b) Trial examinations and why is it important to attend the trial exams

i. You will get the feel of writing an examination because you will write like you were

writing the final examination already.

ii. You will get a chance to have all your difficulties and queries sorted out in all the

subject areas.

iii. You will be able to discuss with other students in study groups if you have one or

form a study group if you do not belong to any.

NOTE: Revision of these exam questions is done during the 2nd Term holidays at EDC for JC and SGCSE respectively.

Page 8: The student handbook · 2020. 9. 3. · the syllabus thus be ready for the examination. F. LIST OF EDC ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES/ACADEMIC CALENDAR At EDC, JC and SGCSE classes are conducted

7

Learners in Form I, II and IV who enrolled in the 3rd Term or late in the 2nd Term in 2017 are expected to write their End-of-Year Examinations in August during the Mock Examination. Their Mock Examination is their End-of-Year Examination. If you are one of those learners, you will then register for the next level or Form in the 3rd Term.

c) ECOS JC and SGCSE Examinations

The ECOS examination is written by Form III and Form V students who have registered for the examination. You register by paying the examination fees, registration and invigilation fees. Examination forms are obtained at the reception at EDC.

Students should ensure that they know the deadlines for paying exam fees and stick to them. Make sure your tuition fees are fully paid up before the examination date because you shall not be allowed to write if you still owe your tuition fees.

d) Orals examinations

Mock Orals examinations for Form III and V will start on the 11th June and end on the 22nd June, 2018. Make sure that you visit or call EDC to register for the Mock Orals Exams.

ECOS Form III and Form V final orals exams start in the month of September in the 3rd Term. Check your ECOS timetable for the exact dates.

i. Importance of Orals Examinations: -

As part of the syllabus, all English learners are expected to practise speaking as it is

one of the skills examined in Paper 4 JC and SGCSE Examination. It is therefore

imperative that learners do this Orals Examination in order to prepare themselves for

the final Examination. This will help you gain the necessary confidence and skills

required in order to pass it well. The Oral examination weighting for both Junior

Certificate and SGCSE is 15%.

ii. How the Orals are conducted by EDC

From the first term, learners are taught about Orals in the Tuesday and Thursday

classes, where they practise the skills of speaking. Then between June and July, the

completing classes do an Oral Mock Examination to be included in their final English

language mock examination mark. Learners register with the English Department for

a convenient date between these dates and each learner is allocated the exact time

as done in the ECOS final examination. All rules and regulations are observed during

this session. About 60 learners are examined per day, 40 from SGCSE and 20 from JC.

Page 9: The student handbook · 2020. 9. 3. · the syllabus thus be ready for the examination. F. LIST OF EDC ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES/ACADEMIC CALENDAR At EDC, JC and SGCSE classes are conducted

8

In September when schools open, Orals for JC and SGCSE resume for the final ECOS

Examination. When you collect your statement of entry, you are all notified of your

scheduled oral examination date. It is important that you honor this date as there will

not be any other one allocated to you. If there is a genuine problem with that allocated

date, you should notify the office of the Vice Principal to make necessary

arrangements.

iii. How the learners should prepare themselves for the Oral examination

Lecturers upon orientation of the learners, explain in detail to them the importance

of this exercise. You are encouraged to practise speaking English whenever and

wherever they can because they are not in a classroom situation. You are also

encouraged to come for Tuesday and Thursday classes in order to benefit from the

lessons on speaking. In the introduction of modules for both JC and SGCSE there is

information regarding Paper 4 of the Examination. In addition, the English Department

encourages you to converse in English when you come for one-on-one or face-to-face

sessions with lecturers at EDC.

iv. Any other crucial information

Learners must speak English frequently and expose themselves to situations that will

benefit them. For example, listening to the news and reading widely to improve

knowledge about local and international general and current affairs because topics

covered in the Orals sessions are usually topics that are general. It is therefore to your

advantage to have as much general information about what is going on in the world

as you can. Confidence is important when you talk about something you know.

12

Even though you will be doing experimental work, you will sit for Paper 4, the Alternative to Practical paper. It is a written examination that asks questions about practical work, and tests the same skills as those you would need for a practical examination. It does not require laboratory facilities. Distance learners enter for the Alternative to Practical paper. Some of the activities in this module are simple practical investigations that require some basic equipment which you may have at home or you can buy from the supermarkets. Exposure to the laboratory is essential when doing Physical Science. It is important that you practice drawing and labelling diagrams. In the practical examination, you may be required to draw and label diagrams.

You will start with Module 1, the Chemistry component of Physical Science following the schedule below. There are three Chemistry modules. Physics shall follow soon.

J. STUDY SKILLS

As a student of EDC, you must realize that you and you alone are responsible for your own learning. You must keep yourself motivated as there will be no one forcing you to study or do your school work. You might find it extremely difficult to cope unless you are equipped with strong study skills and self-motivated.

Below are some guidelines on how to study effectively. Read them and apply them.

HOW TO STUDY EFFECTIVELY

Page 16: The student handbook · 2020. 9. 3. · the syllabus thus be ready for the examination. F. LIST OF EDC ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES/ACADEMIC CALENDAR At EDC, JC and SGCSE classes are conducted

15

a) ORGANIZE YOUR STUDY SPACE

It is advisable that you must have a fixed place for your daily study.

i. The place must be comfortable.

ii. Free of distractions like noise and people, DSTV and your cell phone.

iii. Have a desk or a table and a comfortable chair. Avoid by all means studying in bed

because you will quickly fall asleep without doing much.

iv. Have a good lighting system

v. Put all the materials you may need on your table to avoid moving up and down once

you have started studying.

b) DEVELOP A TIME–TABLE

We are aware that you have to divide your time between social commitments, work commitments and your studies but it is important that you allocate more time to your studies.

i. Set aside 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening everyday as study time

for your different subjects. Then the other hours could be used for other activities.

ii. Work consistently. You have to design your own time–table that you shall stick to, no

matter what.

iii. Know the number of workbooks for each subject for which you have enrolled so that

you could divide your time to complete the course and still have time for revision

before exams.

c) EXPLORE VARIOUS STUDY ACTIVITIES

i. Make sure you understand your work as you go along. If there is something you don’t

understand, find someone to explain it to you as soon as possible, a classmate or

lecturer or your tutor.

ii. Also make use of the difficulty sheets that are provided together with the modules.

iii. Do all the Activities or exercises in your module and then check the answers at the

end of each chapter. Use these answers to mark for yourself and then make

corrections.

iv. Form study groups. During residential sessions you will meet your classmates. Form

study groups with them and arrange time for group studies during or after the

residential sessions. It is important to keep contact with your peers.

v. Attend classes at EDC or at your nearest Study Centre.

vi. Develop good reading skills. The bulk of your studies require you to read, read and

read with understanding.

• Focus on the command words and locate the relevant information in the passage

that refers to the command word. Lecturers and tutors will help you with this

exercise.

• Read to understand by posing questions before and after reading. Remember that

you will be asked to recall and check what you have read.

Page 17: The student handbook · 2020. 9. 3. · the syllabus thus be ready for the examination. F. LIST OF EDC ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES/ACADEMIC CALENDAR At EDC, JC and SGCSE classes are conducted

16

• As you read, note that you have to find answers.

• Answer all exercises and write all tests in your modules to show that you have

understood the lessons.

• Have a dictionary by your side and make good use of it.

v. When you are ready to write the test, first revise your work and then sit down to write

it without referring to the module. Try to time yourself and always read through to

check for mistakes.

vi. Don’t give up. Don’t be discouraged when you have failed a test. Find out why you

failed it, with the help of friends, lecturers and tutors. Double your effort to pass next

time.

d) EXAMINATION PREPARATION

You have enrolled with EDC because you want to succeed in your examinations. The aim of exams is to test your understanding of your courses. This is mainly a test of the use and application of knowledge to solve our daily problems. Therefore, the key to successful study involves your ability to apply what you have learnt and answering the questions that may be asked.

It is advisable that you go through your modules and your tutor marked tests once again. In the library you may also find past examination papers which you could also look at and attempt to answer.

i. PLANNING YOUR REVISION

• Start revising your work early as in most cases you get your time- table very

early in the year. Plan your revision timetable.
