Session aims
• To understand the definitions for the ‘axial skeleton’ and ‘appendicular skeleton.’
• To identify the main bones of the skeleton and vertebrae
• To identify the 4 major types of bones
Appendicular skeleton
• The axial skeleton forms the main axis or core of your skeletal system, and provides the main area of support and protection for the body (Barker, et al, 2007)
• The axial skeleton consists of:– Skull
– Thorax
– Vertebral column

The Thorax
The vertebral column
Appendicular skeleton
• This consists of the bones of the limbs, including; – Femur– Tibia and Fibula– Humerus– Girdles that join onto the– Ribs– Clavicle – Sternum – Patella – Pelvis – Vertebrae/spine
Types of bone
• Long (Humerus)
• Short (Trapezoid)
• Fat (Sternum)
• Irregular (Vertebrae)
