Soil Stabilisation offers superior benefits in today’s environmentally conscious construction industry.

Stablearth produce an extensive range of soil stabilisation products for highways, civil engineering, the railway industry and the retail sector... a must for the domestic fencing and landscaping market. Cost and environmental benefits figure largely in the appeal of the soil modification process which enables granular and cohesive soils to be upgraded by the in-situ mixing of binders with the host material.

The company manufactures its speciality products at an extensive facility in Staffordshire using bespoke plant that’s unique to the company – designed exclusively by staff at their technical division.

Typical applications of soil stabilisation include:

• Waterlogged construction sites – offering a quick and effective reduction in moisture content

• Car parks

• Foundations for housing and commercial floor slabs

• Highway construction

• Stabilisation of railway embanks / backfilling / topping out

• Reclamation and remediation of contaminated land Ports, Dockyards and storage areas

Stablearth products can be used in many areas throughout the construction arena – it’s as broad as its long in terms of commercial and domestic usage, the possibilities are endless:

Fencing, Landscaping, signage, decking, patios, street lighting, temporary access, trench consolidation, embankments, utility projects, verge construction, lay-bys.

The addition of Stablearth products Strengthen the soil by as much as 600%

Case Study 1Cheshire West & Chester Council

Stablearth recently worked in conjunction with Cheshire West & Chester Council on improvements to the A548 Llanrwst – Chester coast road. The project was deemed a great success - verge construction, replacement and maintenance was essential along the entire length of this important trunk road.

All the excavated material was completely re-cycled and reinstated – nothing was sent to landfill sites and apart from Stablearth products... nothing was else was added other than top soil and grass seed!

Case Study 2EirGrid

EirGrid is the independent electricity Transmission System Operator in Ireland and the market operator in the wholesale electricity trading system. EirGrid’s role is to deliver quality connection, transmission and market services to generators, suppliers and customers utilising the high voltage electricity system, and to put in place the grid infrastructure required to support the development of Ireland’s economy.

The East West Interconnector Project (EWIP) will connect EirGrid to the UK’s National Grid through a sub-sea cable that starts in Ireland and passes under the Irish Sea coming ashore in the UK in Wales and routing to a connection station in Flintshire, a UK-side land route of almost 30km. The cable will carry 5,000 megawatts DC power.

All spoil from trench excavation necessary to complete this project was removed and sent to a local recycling centre. The material was screened, sorted and mixed with Stablearth additives to create a Hydraulically Bound Material (HBM). This HBM was then reintroduced to the trench as a backfill up to and including the sub base which, incidentally, was used as part of an Appendix A9 trial on a type 2 road.

The introduction of the Stablearth material facilitated the diversion of 30,000 tonnes of material away from landfill. The 63% reduction in transportation costs yielded a saving of £20,000 and prevented 47,000 tonnes of CO2 being dispersed into the atmosphere.

These are 3 levels of treatment in the soil stabilising process:

1. Modification / Improvement

Stablearth will reduce high moisture content in otherwise un-acceptable materials to enable the excavation, placing and compaction of ‘general fill’ allowing the work to be carried out in an efficient and most importantly, an economical manner. This is commonly done by the introduction of small amounts of quicklime. The required amount is usually determined by initial laboratory monitoring & testing.

2. Stabilising

Mixing binders and water with the host material will produce a lightly cemented product with long term strength and durability. The proportions of the mix constituents are designed and proved by laboratory and technical assessments.

3. Enhanced Stabilising

This is stabilisation offering you a higher quality material with enhanced performance. Commensurate with this are more stringent design requirements and tighter ‘on-site’ control and testing.

The Benefits of Stablearth Soil Stabilisation Soil stabilisation offers many benefits in today’s construction market including cost, quick turnaround and importantly, environmental benefits.

Cost savings

• Minimum offsite costs – disposal costs are avoided since the stabilising process allows the use of existing site materials to be included in the composition, therefore excavation and the removal of unsuitable materials is kept to a minimum

• No road stone Imports - stabilised materials can be used as capping and sub-base replacements

Environmental Benefits

• Hugh reductions in vehicular movements - material is treated on-site, reducing the need to import and export material

• Minimum use of landfill resource - existing site materials are utilised

• Two of the binders we use are by-products of power stations and steel works

• No requirement for quarried stone

Technical Benefits

Treatment with lime (lime stabilisation) and/or cement (cement stabilisation) allows for the production of a long lasting and stable material comparable to graded aggregates. Hard wearing, with greater tolerance and strength; Stablearth products provide excellent performance within the construction process and have become widely recognised as a strong alternative to typical construction methods Financial Benefits

The recycling and re-use of on-site material offers significant savings since it minimises the stripping and removal of material to landfill, there are less associated transport costs and a reduction in the importation of aggregates. Additionally, the length of a project may be reduced significantly.
