FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Community news: With blessings to everyone in this year of Mercy, Louise Gunther Principal

A PRAYER FOR NOVEMBER

Grant, O Lord, that our own heart may be touched, as yours is, at the passing of all souls into eternal life. In great confidence, we pray for all our friends and loved ones who are no longer here on this journey of faith. When we are sad at the death of those who were close to us, may our sadness be firmly supported by our faith that life is merely changed not ended, that those we love are still with us though unseen. May You, Lord Jesus Christ, welcome us and all those for whom we pray, into eternal life at the moment pleasing to You. Saint Teresa of Avila, intercede for us. Saint Teresa of Avila strengthen our faith.

Avila College acknowledges the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of the land on

which the College is built.

Dear Avila College Community,

Recently I attended celebrations in Hobart for the sesquicentenary (150 years) of the Presentation Sisters in Australia. The Sisters came at the request of Bishop Murphy whose sister was Reverend Mother at the Presentation Convent in Fermoy, Ireland. We are indebted to the fact that 150 years ago, four Sisters and five postulants left the safety of all that they knew and ventured across perilous seas to establish schools in Australia.

Cover image: Avila College Year 10 Drama Festival

Almost 100 years later, an outcome of those first Sisters’ courage and vision was the establishment of Avila College in 1965 at the request of local parish priests. In the 1960s many of our local parish schools were led and staffed by Presentation Sisters so it was natural that it was they who were asked to lead the work of establishing Avila College. Their faith, action and commitment to the community forged Avila College into the great place of learning that it is today.

The Year 10 Drama Festival held on 26 and 27 October provided a wonderful opportunity to witness understanding of Presentation values amongst our students. Students used images from the internationally acclaimed street artist Banksy to create plays exploring respect for self and treatment of others, including the marginalized. The plays were written, directed and produced by Year 10 Opposite Prompt students under the guidance of Avila teacher, Ms Caroline Kelly. The cast for each of the 5 plays consisted of students from Years 7 to 10. In addition to clever, entertaining and insightful scripts, convincing performances from a broad range of students provided evidence of promising new talent from whom we will no doubt see more in the future. Congratulations to all involved and particularly to Vadi Award winner, Carla Di Gregorio who played the role of Leo in "You're Never Too Old To Dream Big".

As is usual for this time of year, we have entered the final assessment phase. Externally assessed VCE exams are proceeding smoothly and Year 9 exams will be held in the Hall on Wednesday 16 November. Years 10 and 11 students will commence their exams the following day, Thursday 17 November. Students are encouraged to prepare thoroughly for their exams as per advice from their teachers whilst mindful that examinations are just one of a number of forms of assessment used at Avila College. Today we held our Term 4 College Assembly at which we congratulated the excellent achievements of a very broad range of students across many different areas of learning. Students received certificates for their achievements in the Australian Maths Olympiad Competition, the National Computer Science School Challenge, the Australian Geography Competition, the Shared Stories Competition, the Dante Alighieri Italian Speaking Competition and our own Master Chef competition. Well done to all! It is inspiring to others to see so many of their peers stretching themselves to produce such fantastic results in these competitions.

I also congratulate students who have confidently and articulately presented arguments in public speaking competitions recently, including Atara Thenabadu and Sophia Grubnic (Year 10) who won the semi final of the Rotary 4 Way Challenge Public Speaking competition; Dena Tissera (Year 11) who was short listed as a finalist and highly commended by the Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Dr Tim Soutphommasane for her “high quality, crafted” presentation in the inaugural Race Discrimination Commissioner’s Student Prize Competition; Emma Spencer (Year 11) who was chosen for her work as a Firecarrier Captain to participate in the Victorian Schools Constitutional Convention at Parliament House; and Olivia Gomatos and Nimrit Kakkar (Year 9) who have made the grand final in the British Parliamentary Debating competition. We commend them and wish them well for the grand finals of the various competitions. With blessings to all, Madeleine Franken Acting Principal

LEARNING AND TEACHING NEWS Exams Year 9 students will take their exams in English, Maths and Science on 16 November. The Years 10 and 11 students will commence their exams next week. Students undertaking Year 12 studies will sit their final written exam on 16 November. Year Level Co-ordinators, Curriculum Leaders and teachers have advised students about how to prepare for their exams and of the specific materials that are permitted in the different subjects’ exams. All students were given details of examination regulations regarding dictionaries, calculators, electronic devices, mobiles phones, pencil cases and drink bottles. Please see pages 11 to 14 for Year 10 and 11 exam timetable.

HeadStart All students currently in Years 10 and 11 will undertake the HeadStart program from 25 November to 2 December. Year 9 students undertaking a VCE subject in Semester One should attend the HeadStart lessons for that subject unless they have a formal assessment occurring in their Year 9 class at the same time. Where such a clash occurs, the assessment of the Year 9 subject takes priority. During HeadStart students undertake three lessons in each of their Semester One subjects throughout the program. Homework will be set to assist students to commence the new year with confidence and knowledge regarding the type of learning that occurs in each subject. In many cases, the homework is designed to prepare students for school assessed coursework (SAC) tasks that occur very early in the course. Any student who knows that she will be absent from any of the HeadStart program must see her current Year Level Co-ordinator. Students are advised that absence may put their VCE studies at a disadvantage. Absentees are required to catch up on the work missed in addition to completing all holiday homework.

Booklists Booklists will be issued to Years 7 and 8 students along with confirmation of their electives for 2016 within the next two weeks. Booklists need to be submitted online to Campion by 1 December. Angela Torelli

Acting Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Supporting Learning - How Can I help? Sometimes it can be a challenge for parents to know how to help their daughter do her best at school. Is it making sure she's doing her homework? Helping her balance her extra-currcular activities and work commitments? Is it restricting her time with technology if she gets a result that wasn’t expected? A recent study by the University of Michigan has a few tips to help you think about how you respond to lower than expected results from either assignments or end of semester reports. Working collaboratively with teachers provides a great benefit to improvement and learning. Teachers are a great source of information so that parents can understand the reasons behind their daughter’s performance, and not make faulty attributions about the underlying cause. And no matter how bad the report might be, don’t fall into the easy trap of taking out your daughter’s poor performance on the school. Teachers are not only there to help, but are an important ally in helping improve your daughter ’s school performance. Engage in co-operative and constructive collaboration with your daughter’s school that is built on mutual respect and understanding. The three main recommendations for responding to your daughter's report are:

1. When unexpected or poor results come in, research shows that reacting with frustration, anger, lecturing or punishment isn’t the best way to get better results.

2. Consistent and responsive parenting will do more good than a punitive approach. 3. Give and seek specific feedback on your child’s progress – especially the reasons behind any unexpected

results.

Working together with the school, teachers and your daughter creates a supportive mix that can help improve learning and engagement during challenging times.

PASTORAL CARE Mulgrave Country Club Scholarship Award Each year the Mulgrave Country Club generously awards a scholarship for a student progressing to Year 12 the following year. The award is made in recognition of a student’s dedication to their College community and to their studies. Avila College congratulates Year 11 student, Tamara Ryan, as the 2016 Mulgrave Country Club Scholarship recipient. Tamara’s award was presented to her by the Hon. Daniel Andrews, member for Mulgrave.

Beating the Body Image Blues Research suggests that a girl’s self-esteem peaks at nine years old and that an alarming number of girls in primary schools report that they want to be thinner. Health organisations are concerned that the childhood obesity message is being misunderstood. Parents are important players in helping their daughter to have a positive body image. It is not surprising that many parents find it challenging to cultivate a positive body image in their daughters, especially given all of the messages in the media about girls and women’s appearances.

Building your daughter's positive body image takes many forms. It is important to speak positively about your own and others’ bodies, and the message can be supported by your daughter reading books with a strong positive self image message. Mighty Girl (Facebook) has compiled a collection of books for girls on body image. While some of the titles may be challenging to source in Australia, I encourage parents to seek these titles out. Here are a few recommendations for secondary school students:

PUBLIC SPEAKING NEWS Victorian Schools’ Constitutional Convention Congratulations to Emma Spencer (Avila Firecarrier) who was selected from entrants in the first round of the convention process and offered a place at the Victorian State Constitutional Convention for Schools. The theme for the conference was “Equality: A myth or reality.” Emma was chosen to contribute by participating in a discussion on this theme for Australia’s First Peoples.

Race Discrimination Commissioner’s Student Prize Congratulations to talented Year 11 student Dena Tissera who accepted the challenge to compete in the inaugural Race Discrimination Commissioner’s Student Prize competition. In order to do this Dena needed to research and reflect on racial discrimination in Australia and then write a one thousand word essay examining the challenges racism poses and the role of law in Australia’s response to racism.

In doing this Dena began by providing evidence from her own experience:

“People are often vexed when they see me, a light skinned Sri Lankan with tertiary educated parents. One of the reasons behind this confusion is a lack representation of people of colour in the media, sport and fashion industry. Mainstream media in Australia is an ice cream shop that only sells vanilla, with just enough chocolate chips and sprinkles to keep people from complaining. I often see people of colour depicted as taxi-drivers, alcoholics or non English speakers; while there is no shame in being these things, it is not all we are.”

…and then moved on to the social ramifications of racism and the problem of institutionalized racism for Australia’s First People in the justice system, reflecting Dena’s commitment to ideas discussed in Avila’s Reconciliation Group. Dena’s entry was shortlisted for the final award and has received a High Commendation for her entry which the Commissioner, Dr Tim Soutphommasane said was “crafted” and of “high quality”. Well done, Dena. Chris Valladares Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator

Rotary 4 Way Challenge You may remember that two of our Year 10 students, Atara Thenabadu and Sophia Grubnic were winners in the first round of the Rotary 4 Way Challenge representing the Rotary Club of Mt Waverley. Last week they competed in the semi finals and both girls have been selected to go through to the Grand Final. Both of the students delivered impressive speeches that received much praise from the judges. L - R: Atara Thenabadu and Sophia Grubnic

It was a powerful day full of ideas with over 100 students from across Victoria speaking from the perspectives of people from minority groups, people with disabilities and those involved in the fight for gender rights. The students concluded that equality is a myth at present but there is potential for change. They heard impressive speakers from both the government and human rights representatives. Emma is currently waiting to see if she will be accepted to attend the National Convention in Canberra. We wish her well.

Swannie Awards The Debaters Association Awards Night this year celebrated 60 years of competitive debating in Victoria. Those present on the evening were privileged to hear Honorable Justice Bernard Teague speak of how debating can change a person’s life. The school’s competition this year saw more than 10,000 students from 1,400 teams representing 268 schools across 19 regions. From this pool less than 100 students received awards on the night. Congratulations to Georgia Pitt who was the winner of the DAV Senior Public Speaking Award at Year 11 from 2016 and Zoe Evans who was the Swannie Award winner for B Grade in the Toorak zone. A recognition for the gifts of these two very gifted communicators.

Chris Valladares Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator

DEBATING NEWS Junior Debaters The Junior debaters have been very busy. The Debaters Association of Victoria Junior competition had their last round with all of Avila’s teams being victorious. The Best Speaker Awards on the night went to: Neha Cherayath, Mieke De Vries and Jocelyn Satya-Graha. The DAV have since congratulated Avila on the teams’ success in the season overall. This year’s program in Glen Waverley saw 8 schools and over 20 teams participating in the program. Out of the 20, six teams were undefeated for the whole season and 4 of these teams were from Avila. Many adjudicators commented that the presentation skills of the students was beyond what they expected and the DAV were very pleased

British Parliamentary Team: Front Row L- R: Shivaani Sivaraj,

Martha Surumpaet, Sanjuna Nair, Pooja Soni, Back row L-R: Ashley Ng, Alexandrea Peake, Vibusha Raghudhevan, Nimrit Kakkar, Olivia Gomatos

with overall participation. More than one in three of the “Outstanding Speakers” nominated by the DAV were from Avila. Congratulations to: Mieke de Vries, Neha Cherayath, Priyanka Sharma, Shivaani Sivaraj, Clare Hegarty, Emma Moran, Jocelyn Satya- Graha, Kavia Pynadath, Lily Bunning, Martha Sarumpaet, Sanjana Nair and Tiana Pincic. Some of these Juniors and some Year 9 debaters volunteered to compete in the DAV’s British Parliamentary Debating competiton. This is a challenging competition that involves completing three debates on a day with only 30 minutes preparation time for each debate. The style of the debates is engaging as speakers from opposing teams can interrupt and pose questions during a person’s speech. Congratulations to the four teams who competed in this competition: Nimrit Kakkar, Olivia Gomatos, Ashley Ng, Vibusha Raghudhevan, Alexandrea Peake, Sanjuna Nair, Pooja Soni, Martha Surumpaet and Shivaani Sivaraj. We congratulate Olivia Gomatos and Nimrit Kakkar have made it through to the Grand Final next month – we wish them well.

SCIENCE NEWS 2016 Science Talent Search The Science Talent Search is an annual statewide competition that stimulates the ongoing interest in the study of science and promotes student involvement in the development of scientific ideas. This opportunity is currently offered to students across all year levels. This year Avila College entered 20 pieces of work into the competition, 8 of which were recognized with bursary awards. The following students are to be congratulated for their achievements: Pooja Soni, Beatrice Van Rest, Isabel Amoranto, Mieke de Vries, Caitlin Marinis, Ericka Phoa and Alicia Roy from Year 8, and Cassandra Tan from Year 9. At the conclusion of the competition the bursary winners are invited to attend an Exhibition and Presentation Day, which provides the students with the invaluable opportunity to communicate their achievements to a wider audience. Below is a student account of the Exhibition and Presentation Day which encapsulates her thoughts on the whole experience: “Let the STS award ceremony begin!”, was how the presenter started the afternoon. On 24 October Miss Spiteri, Mrs Thom-Tydell, the other award winners and I went to La Trobe University. It was great to be receiving a reward for our hard work and seeing the creative projects of other students. Before this big day, there were many preparations and problems that we encountered. There were many papers to file and get signed and we also had our projects to complete. This year's STS theme was “Drones, droids and robots”. This meant that we could create something related to this theme or we could create an experiment about something of particular personal interest. All of the Year 8s were required to complete the task as a school assignment, and then a number of students were given the chance to enter their work into the official competition, based on the originality of our ideas and completeness of our report. After signing up to enter the competition we had the chance to refine and improve our project reports before submitting a final copy to the competition. On behalf of all of Year 8 students, I would like to thank all of the teachers involved in the process.” Written by Pooja Soni, Year 8 student and major Bursary Winner Carley Spiteri STS Co-ordinator

YEARS 10 AND 11 EXAM TIMETABLE

Thursday 17 November 2016

See over….

HEALTH CENTRE Head Lice. They’re back…

Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living solely on human beings for 10,000 years. You may be reassured to know that they are commonly found in places other than Avila. We have recently been notified that there have been a few cases of head lice at Avila. Please check or recheck your daughter’s hair. The best way to check the hair is by putting hair conditioner in dry detangled hair. Then comb the hair with a fine comb and wiping the conditioner on a tissue or paper towel. The nits cannot attach to the hair with conditioner on and will be seen on the tissue along with eggs, which look like a grain of sand. If they are present, please treat your daughter. Treatments can be purchased at the pharmacy along with the fine-toothed comb required to comb out nits.

The following week treat your daughter again. Make sure as part of the treatment you clean the pillow case. Putting the linen in a hot dryer after washing helps get rid of the pests. Also clean hairbrushes, and it may be best to throw away hair ties, etc. Regular rechecks are necessary in case the tiny critters come back or the treatment has not worked! If you need some help on treating head lice, there are some information sheets at the Health Centre. Please pick one up, or for online help look at https://www2.health.vic.gov.au/public-health/infectious-diseases/head-lice/about-head-lice

Mosquitoes With the big rainfall we have had over the last few months in Victoria, there is a lot of water about, which are perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes seem to target some people. If your daughter is susceptible to mosquito bites, especially if she has an allergic reaction to the bites, please send some roll on insect repellent with your daughter to school so she can apply it as necessary.
