Attendance: Students are expected to be on campus at all times when school is in session. Travel plans should be made to allow students to arrive on campus at the times noted, and to leave campus only after all academic and other commitments are completed. Any anticipated absence must be communicated to the Dean of Students well in advance. He will determine if such absences are excused or unexcused. Unexcused absences will lead to academic and disciplinary consequences. In particular, lost academic time during the junior and senior year impacts grades and can jeopardize final college admission decisions. Seniors are allowed three days to visit colleges. These days must be approved by the College Counselor and the Dean of Students at least a week in advance. If possible, they should not be taken during the first days after Thanksgiving, winter, or spring break. TOEFL – All Junior and Senior International students or those for whom English is a second language will be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at least once during both 11th and 12th grade. Students must register for these tests through the academic office when they arrive on campus. The dates and test sites are then assigned by the Educational Testing Service. Students who have TOEFL scores from previous years should bring score reports to the College Counseling Office.

Guardian Information and Expectations 2014-2015

(REQUIRED FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS in Grades 8-9)

The Storm King School recommends that all international students have a local guardian, but only requires students entering the 8th and 9th grades to retain a guardian. This ensures continued care and safety for students while off campus during vacations and weekends. Guardians help the School communicate with families overseas as well as support the School with students on campus. Ideally, this person would be a family member or a family friend. Understandably, this is not possible for all students. The Storm King School does know of several local families, including present and former parents, who have experience as SKS guardians and may be able to provide some or all of the services described below. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

A guardian should provide services to include but not limited to the following: Facilitating

communication between the School and family; Providing home stays during breaks; Assisting in formulating vacation plans; Managing transportation to and from the School; Coming to campus to provide assistance or support when the need arises; Providing proper permissions for off campus trips as needed; Responding promptly to all communications from the School.

Any arrangements or agreements made between a family and a student’s guardian are made separate from the rules and expectations of The Storm King School. Therefore, it is understood that The Storm King School is not responsible or accountable for the relationship or agreements made between a family and the guardian.

The Storm King School also reserves the right to require a change of guardian should a conflict of interest or problem arise.

Parents must understand that SKS students must vacate the campus for three major vacations.

These are: • Thanksgiving Vacation (depart Friday afternoon11/21/14 after exams or Saturday morning, and

return Monday evening 12/1/14) • Winter Vacation (depart Thursday afternoon12/18/14, and return Monday evening 1/5/15) • Spring Vacation (depart Friday afternoon 3/6/14 or Saturday morning, and return Monday

evening 3/23/15)

Please see the school calendar for more information. Transportation to and from two local airports (JFK and Newark) will be scheduled on the days listed above and must be reserved in advance. Families that do not employ a guardian must have the ability to communicate with the school in English via

email and telephone.

Additional permission. Some parents, especially those who have relatives or friends serving as guardians, may wish the guardian to check on the grades of the student and perhaps meet and talk to teachers in order to oversee the student’s academic progress or perhaps translate and communicate this information back to parents. Room Furnishings: The School provides a bed, desk, chair, closet, and window shades. Parents and students may provide any additional furnishings which might be desired, such as small stereo and posters. Keep in mind that space is limited in the dorm rooms! An overabundance of clothes, electronics, or other furnishings makes living uncomfortable. Electrical Appliances: Because of fire safety considerations, no student may have electrical appliances at school, such as microwave ovens, toasters, hot plates, air-conditioning units, or TV sets. Any such appliances will be confiscated. Halogen lamps are not permitted. Computers: Each student will be issued an SKS iPad during orientation. Several computers and printers are located throughout campus. Students are encouraged to bring laptop computers. Campus is fully wireless. Clothing and Linens: Please refer to the dress code description for general guidelines. However, a good guideline is to have two weeks of underclothing, five to seven SKS shirts (short/long sleeve), four or five pairs of pants, an SKS sweatshirt (may be purchased at Mom’s Store), and a sweater. During non-academic time, students’ dress must be in good taste. Each article of clothing, towel, and bed linen should be clearly marked with the student’s name. This list includes the essentials for all boarding students. (Please note that there will be shopping trips to places such as Walmart within a few days of arrival. Some items are also available in the school store.)

Pillows 4 Towels 3 Pillowcases 3 Wash clothes 2 Blankets 2 Laundry bags (marked with name) 1 Comforter (optional) 1 Bedspread 2 sets twin sheets (not extra long) Soap Flashlight Desk Lamp Alarm clock with battery back-up Trunk or Footlocker and Lock

Equipment: Equipment connected with a student’s hobbies or interest should be brought by the student. Items such as toiletries and school supplies may be purchased on campus. Laundry and Dry Cleaning: A laundry and dry cleaning service is available through the Business Office. Students may also do their own laundry in the dorms, which have coin-operated washers and dryers. These machines can handle sheets and general laundry. Athletic Equipment: The School supplies basic athletic equipment for teams, but personal athletic items should be brought by the students. Security: To ensure the safety of one’s belongings, students are discouraged from keeping cash in their rooms. An ATM machine is available on campus. Valuable documents, such as I-20s and passports, are kept in the Admissions Office or in the Dean of Students Office.

Parents should be aware that the School’s insurance does not cover students’ personal belongings.

Day Student Information What time does the school day start? What time does the school day end? For boarding students, the school day begins with mandatory breakfast from 7:00–7:45. Breakfast is optional for day students. Day students must arrive at the dining hall before 8:00 for morning meeting, when attendance is taken. Where do I keep my stuff? Lockers and locks are available for day students. If I am going to be absent, late, or leave for an appointment and return to the School, how do I let the School know? Please contact the Dean of Students Office at 845-458-7516 by 8:00 AM. If the Dean of Students is not available, leave the information on his voice mail. When returning to the School, students must check in with the Dean of Students Office prior to attending class. May I eat at the School? May I sleep over at the School? Where would I stay? Day students are always welcome at meals. Day students may occasionally sleep over in the dorms, hosted by a boarding student. These arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis and are arranged through the Dean of Students Office. When a day student is sleeping over, he/she must abide by all the rules and expectations the School sets for boarding students. For non-emergency situations there is a nominal charge of $40.00/night. There will not be a charge if a student is required to stay over during emergency weather conditions or if the student is staying late or leaving early the next morning due to a school event or function. Where am I allowed to be during the day? Where am I not allowed to be? Day students are welcome in all buildings EXCEPT the dormitories, which require the permission of the Dean of Students Office, the Dean on Duty, or the residential faculty member living in the dorm. Day students are required to remain on campus from the time they sign in until they sign out at the end of the day. Can I use my cell phone? Cell phones/electronic devices are not permitted to be used during the academic day except in Orr Commons Dining Hall and the Student Center. See the student handbook for specific cell phone/electronic device use policy. What is the day student Automobile Policy? Day students will be asked to sign a “contract” during registration, which includes parking spot assignment and other specific requirements. Day students are not allowed to transport students off campus without the approval of the Dean of Students. Boarding students must have approval from the Dean of Students before departing campus with a day student. Where should I be dropped off? Students should arrange for pickup and drop off in front of the Student Center. What happens during winter storms and snow days? A closing or delay due to inclement weather will be made prior to 6:30 AM. Parents/Guardians will be notified via a telephonic message, website (www.sks.org), radio broadcast (WHUD 100.7 FM), optional text message, and email. If the School is open and a student will be absent or late due to the weather, call the Dean of Students by 8:00 AM. Please refer to the Handbook for more information. If I have any other questions, whom do I ask? During the summer months, please contact the Admissions Office at 845-534-9860. For questions while school is in session, please contact the Main Office at 845-534-7892 or the Dean on Duty at 845-629-0344.

IPADS AND ORDERING TEXTBOOKS FOR 2014–2015 When students arrive at The Storm King School in the fall of 2014, each will be issued a Storm King School iPad. This hardware will provide access to interactive electronic textbooks that can be viewed on the iPad, organizational tools, and collaborative apps that will be used across the campus.

The process for purchasing eBooks and textbooks is as follows:

• The School has an open account with an online vendor which may be accessed via www.classbook.com. Each student will go online to an account at Classbook that is set up specifically for the individual student (using his/her sks.org email address) based on the needs of the classes he/she is enrolled in.

• The student will order the specified books which, if they are hardcover books, will be delivered to the school under the student’s name. If it is an eBook, codes will be sent to the student’s SKS email address or by regular mail (depending on the publishing company). These codes will be used to download the eBooks from the Classbook website. Note that all downloads are stored in the “cloud” so if a student loses an iPad, he can retrieve all of his eBooks on his/her new device with no additional cost or penalty.

• The School will receive a single invoice each month for all books ordered and will then invoice the student’s account for the exact amount. SKS takes no markups on any of these sales.

• Sometimes students require certain “apps” for their classes. Many times these apps are only available through an Apple iTunes store online. An iTunes card is required for these purchases. These cards are available at the Business Office in $25 increments. The student can also use his/her own iTunes cards since they are not specific to the School. Any iTunes cards purchased through the Business Office will be invoiced to the student’s account.

The iPads are leased (on a two-year cycle) by the School and are the property of The Storm King School. Each student is responsible for taking proper care of the iPad issued to him or her. If the iPad is damaged or lost, the student will be charged for the repair or replacement to a maximum of $400.00. If an iPad is broken or lost, the student must notify the Business Office immediately. The Business Office will then loan a new iPad to the student until his/her original iPad can be repaired or replaced. All iPads are expected to be returned to the Business Office at the end of the school term (June) unless the student:

• Is already re-enrolled for the next year (including payment of enrollment deposit) • Is a departing Senior and wishes to buy the iPad at whatever the prevailing replacement cost is at the

time

All students must bring the iPad to the Business Office before departing for summer break so the serial number can be verified and to confirm that it is in working condition. Anyone who does not return the iPad will be charged for the replacement regardless of whether they are returning in the fall.

As a community, we will be discussing the proper care and maintenance of these tools. We encourage parents to also explain the proper care of these units to their children. We will also address their balanced use in our lives and intend that students will experience SKS as a place where technology meets tranquility! I acknowledge and accept these conditions: ________________________________ ______________________________ Parent Date Student Date

The Storm King School Internet / Network Acceptable Use Policy

General Principles

The Storm King School considers computers (including the iPAD) to be a valuable tool for education and encourages the use of computer related technology in school classrooms to further the educational goals of the school. As part of Storm King’s commitment to academic excellence and technology, students and faculty are provided with access to the internet to support instruction, conduct research, enhance curriculum and communicate with scholars throughout the world. Storm King’s Internet services are designed to guide users in navigating through vast resources while minimizing the possibility of accessing information that is inappropriate in the context of a school setting. No matter how vigilant, the blocking technology can never keep up with new sites or make all the correct judgments about taste. The Storm King School, however, cannot guarantee that such material will not be accessed. If you find a site you need for academic work blocked, please see your teacher. Access can be provided for genuine academic activity.

2. We reserve the right to inspect any computer and mobile devices that accesses The Storm King School network, and, or access the Internet via this system, for compliance with the computer policy as well as inspection for illegal and dangerous software. We reserve the right to remove any such software without the owner/users consent.

3. The school is not responsible for loss or damage to a file due to unauthorized access or usage. 4. Students are strongly encouraged to use appropriate security and backup procedures to insure the

• The Storm King School Dress Code now includes a footwear requirement. The purpose of this is to ensure the safety of the student transitioning from the indoor classroom to the outdoor classroom. There will be a proactive use of the outdoors in our education process and students need to be prepared to participate fully in the learning adventure. Required shoes have good tread (to prevent slippage) and keep feet warm and dry while walking from building to building. For this reason, sneakers will not be allowed during the academic day.

• The following pages will illustrate the types of shoes acceptable in the Storm King School Academic Dress Code.

• The treads shown here indicate minimum tread and relative maximum tread.

• • A bottom tread between the shoe on the left (minimum tread) and the shoe on the right is acceptable. • The following shoes are acceptable women’s styles (colors from grey to black or tan to brown). The

shoe does not have to be one of these pictured, only a representative style.

• • If choosing one of the above styles, you may require a second pair for winter wear.

• The shoe above is not an acceptable style (sole too tall)

• Acceptable Men’s Styles. The tread illustration above indicates the range of traction acceptable. You do not need to purchase one of these exact shoes, but one like any of these styles (colors from gray to black or tan to brown).

• • • If you have questions about the required footwear, please contact Mr. Heno, [email protected]. • The pictures above represent shoes by Merrell, Timberland, Keen, Dr. Martin, and LL Bean.
