XLS Extra LineHave you ever had a difficult time furl-ing your jib when the breeze picked up?Many times, this is due to an old hal-yard that is stretching. This causes yourjib to sag at the luff, and keeps thefurler from spinning freely. XLS Extra isthe perfect solution for replacing wirefurling-jib halyards with lines that arestronger, lighter and more durable than all polyester double braidsor wire, yet are lower cost than the high tech alternatives.

MLX High Tech LineIf high-tech lines are over the top in perform-ance and out of reach in price, MLX is the“missing link” that allows the club racer orperformance-oriented cruiser to upgrade theirlines without breaking the bank. Innegra™-S,a high modulus polypropylene fiber, is used inSamson’s new MLX. Blending Innegra™-Swith Dyneema® results in a rope that bridgesthe gap in performance characteristics andprice between traditional fibers like polyesterand the high performance of HMPE,LCP andaramid fibers.

The Corinthians, a sailing associ-ation with a history going backmore than three-quarters of acentury, welcomes you to one

of the East Coast’s premiere sailingevents.

If it weren’t for you active, competentsailors – we would have little reason toexist. Our organization is made up ofpeople like you: You represent our histo-ry as well as our future. And we wisheach of you, and every boat, fair winds and a safe andenjoyable race.

We also offer our congratulations, whether finishingfirst or last. The fact that you are in this race, whetherskipper or crew, sets you apart from most of the popula-tion; indeed, it places you apart from most sailors. This

race not something required of you. Noris it an activity without serious demandsof its own for time, treasure, skill, andjudgment. Your taking the initiative andpains to be part of this event deservesour hearty congratulations.

Take a moment to scan the list of peo-ple who actually make this race happen:the volunteers from The Corinthians, theStonington Harbor Yacht Club and theBoothbay Harbor Yacht Club. And thentake another moment to thank them. The time and effort to make this race

happen are prodigious, and most of the volunteers wouldrather be sailing with you than watching from a distance. So do give them the appreciation they deserve.

s Welcome to the third run-ning of the “LobsterRun.” From the begin-ning it’s been a wonder-

ful partnership between TheCorinthians, Stonington Harbor YachtClub, and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Clubto sponsor an event with clear goals:

Start in a great spot; have a greatparty.Race a challenging offshore course.Conduct the race to the highest standard.End the race in a great spot; have a great party.Attract the large number of volunteers to pull it off.Make the event a winner for our sponsors.

I’m pleased to report that we are along way towards meeting our goals. This is, of course, not to say that wedon’t continue to need your suggestionsfor improvement.

The addition of Robin Wallace asPrincipal Race Officer (PRO), Jay Kiszkiel’sarmy of volunteers, the support of allthree clubs, and great competitors – allpromise our best effort to date. Thankyou for joining us in this celebration ofoffshore racing.

Tom LaneChairman, Organizing Committee

From its inception, this race is designednot only to prepare and test your boatsfor offshore racing but also to provide adistance race with both a start and a fin-ish in very attractive and scenic locationsthat skippers, crews and guests willenjoy. Dear Lobster Run competitorsand volunteers, on behalf ofthe Flag Officers, members, and staff of Stonington

Harbor Yacht Club, I bid a warm wel-come to Lobster Run participants. Thethird running of The CorinthiansStonington to Boothbay Harbor Racefinds SHYC members in an especially cel-ebratory mood since it coincides withSHYC’s 10th Anniversary Year. While preparations for theevent will occupy the competitors’ attention leading toFriday’s start, we hope race participants will still take sometime to enjoy our beautiful clubhouse, mingle with fellowboating enthusiasts from SHYC, and have a look aroundour historic borough.

For those calling in our harbor for thefirst time, you’ve doubtless already madenote of Stonington’s enviable location asa protected and convenient harbor with-in a day’s sail of many delightful cruisingdestinations. Also apparent to visitors isthe intensity of local interest in themarine environment and the pastime ofboating.

SHYC is at the heart of the local boat-ing scene, with over 300 members par-ticipating in a broad range of club-spon-sored events and activities. As the onlyyear-round club in the area, the sailing

season stretches from spring frostbiting to fall frostbiting, and members are involved in a variety of racing formats, such as PHRF, one-design fleet racing, match racing, andteam racing. Our cruising group has made the SHYCburgee a familiar sight in regional harbors.

The member fleet demonstrates the inclusiveness thatis a SHYC hallmark: sailing and power yachts of all sizes,

The 2010 Lobster Run tookplace when I was RearCommodore, and I have beenlooking forward to presiding

over the 2012 race ever since then. Wehope to repeat the glorious weather andwelcome even more competitors thisyear as the event continues to grow inpopularity.

BHYC has a rich history beginning in1870. Over the years, our safe, beautiful and charmingharbor has hosted countless numbers of steamships, fish-ing boats and yachts. Our racing tradition continues withthe Boothbay Harbor One Design (1938) and J/22 racingseries along with our regattas. We also have a very activeand popular junior sailing and tennis program with com-munity participation and Foundation scholarships.

Today, we offer all the amenities visi-tors need: moorings, launch service, showers, laundry facilities, and an excel-lent bar and restaurant. Our dedicatedvolunteers on the Lobster RunCommittee have been planning for yourarrival, and they will do their best tomake your experience outstanding. Inaddition, our volunteer hostesses at thefront desk will be happy to assist youwith all of your requests.

During your stay in the Boothbayregion, please visit the world classCoastal Maine Botanical Gardens, andplan a hike on one of our Boothbay

We’ve just added a club fleet of Ideal 18s for use by allour members, with the object of reducing the cost and increas-ing the convenience of access to our cherished pastime. Ourenthusiasm on the water extends to our social and marine-edu-cation events back in the clubhouse, as you will experience your-self at the welcome party ahead of the race.

Thank you to all the Corinthian, BHYC and SHYC volunteerswho have committed a vast amount of time to organizing, pro-moting and running this premiere offshore yachting event. In the fall/winter of2001/2002, a number of boatingresidents of Stonington begandiscussing the possibility of form-ing a new yacht club. After send-ing questionnaires to individualswith boats in Stonington Harbor,

it was determined that sufficient interest existed to pursuethe formation of a club.

The result was the incorporation of the StoningtonHarbor Yacht Club, Inc. in May 2002. After an openadmissions period of six weeks, the club had attracted174 Founding Members. This number grew to almost 300by the end of 2003. The Club’s Certificate ofIncorporation states in part that: “...the purpose of theCorporation is to: encourage and support the sport ofyachting, the art of yacht design and building, the scienceof seamanship and navigation; and to help maintain thequality of the waters on which we boat.” Reflecting onthese guidelines the Board of the Stonington HarborYacht Club established the following Mission Statementfor the Club:

The mission of the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club is tofoster in our membership a spirit of excellence in boatingactivities. The three key word/phrases are: “membership,”which we want to be family oriented and diverse with a

demonstrated interest in boating; “excellence,” wherewe want to be recognized for our professionalism andintegrity; and “boating activities,” where we will empha-size racing, cruising, safety and environmental responsi-bility.

The club has established itself as a member of USSailing and the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Associationand has established a Race Committee for club-sponsoredevents as well as for the Race Rock Regatta in 2003. Theclub sponsored a junior and adult sailing program thatbegan in the Summer of 2003 that is available to mem-bers’ children and youth from the Stonington community. This junior program will initially involve instruction inOptimist prams, but will expand to other racing boats asdemand dictates. Additionally, the club is attempting toplace moorings in other harbors for use by our cruisingmembers.

During its initial season the club hosted aCommissioning Ceremony; several cruises, rendezvousand picnics; and several fall social events and sailors’evenings during the winter months. While the StoningtonHarbor Yacht Club was incorporated relatively recently, inMay 2002, with 174 founding members, by 2004, SHYCalready was recognized as one of the fastest growing, most active and most inclusive yacht clubs in NewEngland.

Club was incorporated in1895 by act of the MaineLegislature following forma-tive years dating back to 1870.A hall was leased in BoothbayHarbor, and the club became a

racing and social center for the active summer colony, withmany yacht clubs visiting.

In 1938, the club voted to adopt a 21-foot class sailboat, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club One Design class designedby Geerd Hendel. Many are still sailing and racing today, and One Designs are once again being manufactured. InThe 1990s a class of J/22s was introduced.

The Junior Sailing Program was established in 1954 withyoungsters initially sailing in Turnabouts. The club has host-ed many regional regattas, and turned out many accom-plished sailors. When the inner harbor became too crowd-ed for racing, the club leased the former Oak Grove Casinoin West Boothbay Harbor, with the young sailors enjoyingboth Turnabouts and One Designs. The Junior Sailing pro-gram today uses Optis and 420s.

Increased activities at the club, and within the inner har-bor, prompted the move to the present West Harbor loca-tion. A new clubhouse was built adjoining the casino, which opened in 1968, and was enlarged in 1980.

The tennis program was introduced in 1976 on adjacentcourts built and owned by former Commodore GeorgeWhitten. In 1993, the club bought the courts and theneighboring building, which houses the West BoothbayHarbor Post Office.

In 2000, the club undertook a major renovation of theclubhouse: The flat roof was replaced with a pitched roofand the interior completely redesigned and renovated. Theresult is an attractive and well appointed facility that pro-vides excellent boating and dining services to the club’s 300members and visitors, with launch service throughout theseason to an extensive mooring field.

In 2002, the club acquired bordering property on WestHarbor Pond that included a dwelling that was remodeledto house club staff. In 2011, the club acquired adjacentproperty on West Harbor that included a dwelling that willallow for future expansion of club activities.

The club maintains a prominent role in yacht racing, witha series of weekly J/22 and One Design races with stiff com-petition. In 1987, the Commodore’s Cup series of weekendraces were initiated as a racing forum for cruising sailboats, with large fleets participating. Since 1974, the club hassponsored a Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing AssociationRegatta, a two-day event drawing boats from all overMaine. In 2008, the club became a sponsor, together withThe Corinthians and the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, ofa biannual distance ocean race known as the Lobster Run,which courses 332 nautical miles from Stonington, Conn.,around Nantucket Shoals, and finishes in Boothbay Harbor.

Members also participate in a great variety of events atthe club and in several summer cruises. The renovated club-house has extended the summer season, stretching activi-ties through spring and into the fall. For more informationabout the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, visitwww.bhyc.net. Centered mainly along the northeast coast of theUnited States, The Corinthians is dedicated to bringingtogether good sailors and good boats, providing thehighest-quality events and entertainment, and maintain-ing a long tradition of cruising and offshore racing andvoyaging.

• Founded in in New York in 1934 by yachtsmen whosaw the need for a way for amicable and experi-enced volunteer crew to connect with skippers

• A “virtual yacht club” with no clubhouse, but afocus on crewing and camaraderie

• Events and seminars from Annapolis to Maine, onsubjects as diverse as diesel engines, around-the-world-voyages, and the art of sailing photography

• The Annual Race/Cruise, a major event attended byup to 50 boats, with daily racing between ports, receptions, dining, and kids’ contests

• A focus on encouraging youth sailing, highlightedby the inauguration in 2006 of The Carl A. BeckMemorial Award

• As The Corinthians celebrated their 75th anniver-sary, the first major new ocean race in almost 30years was launched: The Corinthians Stonington toBoothbay Harbor Race.

Run In 1979 the Annapolis to Bermuda race had its first

start. Now, almost 30 years later, The CorinthiansAssociation, in cooperation with the Stonington HarborYacht Club and the BoothbayHarbor Yacht Club, has creat-ed a natural rounding-out ofthe North Atlantic ocean rac-ing scene with a new eventthat promises to be as entic-ing as its predecessors.

To be held every twoyears, in even years, the racewill appeal to those who alsodo the Marion-BermudaRace, or wish to prepare forit, as well as yachts returningfrom the Newport BermudaRace who wish to cruise in Maine in August.

Billed as a race with a wonderful “vacation destina-tion,” it’s also very convenient and inexpensive for crewtransfer.

Already being touted as the “Lobster Run,” theevent features pre-race and post-race dinners and par-ties, complemented in 2008 by the race’s beverage spon-sor, Gosling’s Rums.

Each yacht carries a transponder that will allow posi-tion reporting which can be followed at yellowbrick-tracking.com. Online registration is available.

The race will be a US Sailing sanctioned Category 2event, with ORR, PHRF spinnaker and non-spinnaker divi-sions, as well as double-handed and Swan classes.

The start is off Stonington, Connecticut. Competitorsround the Nantucket Shoals buoys and finish atBoothbay Harbor, Maine. The course length is 332 nau-tical miles. It is a “navigator’s race,” with a choice ofpassing to the north or south of Block Island, and a sim-ilar decision with regard to Squirrel Island near the finish.

CUSH—Clean Up Sound and Harbors—is the only non-profit environmental organization in Southeastern Connecticutwith a mission to clean up and protectFishers Island Sound and its coves, inlets, bays, rivers, and harbors. We’re workingwith Bob Snyder and Dodson Boatyard toinstall two large storm drain filters to trapand remove sediments and debris, grease, oil and other contaminants from stormwater runoff, minimizing silting of theharbor and flooding in a low-lying area of town.

CUSH is known for working effectivelywith others and getting things done.CUSH runs a highly regarded water quality-sampling program with a fleet oftrained volunteers, in partnership withseveral universities and institutions. Thegroup has been instrumental in collaborative projects with Save The Bay,

“Where I grew up sailing, you could just about see the water get filthier andfilthier and filthier. So I just want to do everything I can not to have that happen to the water around here, that’s all.”

—Bob Snyder, Managing Member, Dodson Boatyard

Clean The Bay, United Water Company, the towns of Stonington and WesterlyRI, church groups, and the Cub Scouts, engaging in coastal cleanups; embankment planting; promoting clean boating practices (CUSH has developed and distributed 5,000 cleanboating brochures); enhancing and expanding pump out services toboaters; and responding to queries and requests from individuals andgroups with water quality concerns.

Here’s Bob again: “I’ve said it a milliontimes and I’ll say it for the millionth and first. These waters are our bestasset, period. And when I say ‘our’ it’sDodson Boatyard, it’s the fishing fleet,it’s the town, it’s the merchants, everything.”

CUSH heartily agrees.
