1 The Stonecoast Newsletter May 29, 2012 Greetings Stonecoasters, I hope everyone is doing well and getting a jump on critiques and readings for presentations for this summer’s residency. I have just mailed off the hard copies of my thesis, and I feel a great sense of relief. But I only get to savor this for a little while considering I am still preparing for my own presentation as well, which has been an interesting experience thus far. For this newsletter, I’d like to talk a bit about mentors. No matter what genre you are in, I think we all can come to a general consensus in the fact that in the Stonecoast Program, we really do have some wonderful faculty. For those of you who are coming into the program for the first time, I can’t stress this enough. I think this is a huge part of what makes Stonecoast great. But I also think in general having a mentor is a good thing. When I was an undergraduate, I took every class available to me, and though I got lots of opinions on my work, what I really craved was the one-on-one attention that the graduates had. To have someone sit down and talk with me about my work, and what I could do to make it better and also take me seriously as a writer. It is one of the reasons I picked this program over another that was just as good. There are many professions out there where you can simply take a few courses and ta da! you’re done, you are certified to do “x”. But there are others were you have to apprentice in order to get your “certification”, you learn by doing, you learn by working under a master of sorts, and I think creative writing is that sort of profession. To have a mentor to take you on is not something that can be found everywhere. So I encourage you all, especially the newbies, to take full advantage of that opportunity, learn well and study hard. That’s all for now. Please email your updates to [email protected] by Friday, JUNE 8, NOON EST TIME. Send any feedback about the newsletter to Robin Talbot at [email protected]. Spindleworks PRESS RELEASE Contact: Liz McGhee 207-725-8820 What: Purr and Caw: talking about species When: May 22nd, 7pm Where: Frontier Café, 14 Maine Street, Brunswick Cost: suggested donation of $5 hosted by Spindleworks and Arts Are Elementary Master of Ceremonies: Jim McCarthy It used to be that the earth and all of it's glory was celebrated on one day, April 22nd, “Earth Day”. Fortunately our society in general has grown to have a less compartmentalized appreciation for the natural wonders of the earth. Spring, which has come early to Maine this year, is a time when our senses reawaken to all the living things around us, especially ones that have gone dormant for the winter, died back, or completely left the state. For the past two years, Spindleworks and Arts Are Elementary have been bringing this awareness and celebration to a community level through the now annual All Species Parade. Last year'sAviary exhibit held at Frontier added to the celebration, as visitors marveled at the flock of winged creatures perching at Frontier for most of the summer. This year as well as an accompanying exhibit, A Natural Order, Spindleworks and Arts Are Elementary will host a spoken word evening to give voice to our appreciation, and further extending the season of celebration. Purr and Caw: Talking about Species will be an evening of poetry and song at Frontier Cafe, surrounded by the Natural Order exhibit . Members of the community are welcome to be part of the event by reading or singing work in the theme of species. Those interested should contact Liz McGhee at Spindleworks 725-8820 or [email protected]. There will be no walk in entries.
