Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for generalhousehold use. Although they may clean the carpetsatisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problemssuch as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damageto the pile or backing of the carpet.

It is best to engage the services of aprofessional carpet & upholstery cleaningcompany. To get a really expert job doneentrust the work to a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, havebeen in business for a considerable

length of time, are members of one or more recognisedprofessional trade associations related to the cleaningindustry and have a reputation for top quality service. Andthey use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents onyour wool carpets and rugs!

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch produces between500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending onthe creel size.Whilst the recipe used by the dyerremains constant, and is followed to the letter, ineach separate production the colourreproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to theoriginal or master sample to ensure that thecolour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professional judgementof the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc).To ensure perfectcolour matching it is advisable that a single widthbe used in any installation requiring exact colourmatching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travellingin different directions, even though they be fromthe same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers may notbe from the same batch as current productionand therefore should be used as a guide and notan exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which iscreated during production when spun yarn is cutfor tuft formation. These fibres fall onto thesurface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff ’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre isonly a small fraction of the total fibre contained inthe carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuous pileis pulled through the primary backing of thecarpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in aloop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loopsare easily dealt with by trimming the offendingend level with the rest of the pile. They should notbe left as this could result in further loops beingpulled and developing into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work its wayto the surface and stand proud of the rest of thepile. This is probably due to one end of the tuftbeing longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuftinstead of V shaped. Remedial action merelyrequires that the offending tufts be scissortrimmed level with the rest of the pile. Theyshould never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpet hasbecome crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation of lightand dark patches on the carpet. This will occur onall pile fabrics but can be more noticeable onplainer carpets because the shadows created bypile pressure will not be disguised by a heavypattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have the capacity tostore it. Static is caused by the build up of staticelectricity upon personnel in a dry environmentand is discharged when a person makes contactwith an object which can conduct electricity (i.e.door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity dependingupon the individual, air humidity and the contactmaterials. Static is more usually associated withsynthetic materials as they do not retain moisturevery well but it can and does occur with wool invery dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction ofmoisture into the room or in situ carpettreatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade in use.The degree of fade can vary depending on thecolour chosen and the local conditions to whichthe carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violetlight which is found in daylight, but is acceleratedwhen sunlight shines directly onto the carpet.Thishas the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” thecolour just as exposure to sunlight will lightenhuman hair.Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed tosuch conditions just as you would protect otherfurniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap ofthe carpet changes direction and thus reflects lightat different angles showing the effects of shadingwhich can become permanent. It is also describedas ‘watermarking’.This can happen to every carpetconstruction be it Axminster,Wilton,Tufted, HandWoven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even CoirMatting. Like shading it can be more apparent onplain carpet because heavy patterns can disguisethe effects. It can occur quite quickly afterinstallation.A tremendous amount of research hasbeen carried out over many years by manyinstitutes to determine the cause of thisphenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturingprocess which can cause or cure this phenomenonand therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. Forfurther information please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent.Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longerwill be the time for the pile to recover. In the caseof very heavy loads in place for a considerabletime, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pileof the carpet that becomes indented. the underlaywill also indent and the backing of the carpet mayalso distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some lesswell depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spreadthe load and the net result is a larger area of lessdeeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, usingthe test method described in BS 4939 and manymanufacturers will have data on this aspect ofcarpet performance. In this test the carpet isloaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery ismeasured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since thereare so many different underlay’s however, it is veryrare for the recovery from a heavy static load tobe evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning witha rotating brush machine) will speed up recoverybut in the case of serious indentations the use ofan iron and damp cloth or a steam iron togetherwith a blunt darning needle to carefully tease upthe pile can be beneficial. Care must be take notto over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of traffic whicheventually flattens the pile particularly in the mainareas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greateror lesser degree dependant on the amount oftraffic to which it is subjected and the construction(tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some local conditionto which the carpet has been subjected to, ormaintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do toprevent soiling in use. There are several types ofsoiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials orany drink which contains sugar, particularly hotdrinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave stickysoap residues in the fibres which can result in thesoiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from the obvioussoiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggestairborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fittedfloorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboardscan be seen quite clearly. Air borne dustsometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, thisis due to the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both in theunderlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited onthe pile much like a filter action. In suchinstallations, the use of a lining paper is essential asa preventative measure.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise theconsumer when the carpet is measured of anypoorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards andthe consumers responsibility to ensure anyremedial work to seal draughts, is carried outbefore the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaintis to be avoided.

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat

weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a

wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as afibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellentappearance retention properties. The best wool for carpetproduction is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds foundin Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both BritishWool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulkyand resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades tocarpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter andparticularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the twowithin a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfectqualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool richWool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superiorstrength and does not need other fibres to improve itsperformance. However manufacturers choose to use syntheticfibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These includefibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability andcost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpetswhich will perform well in the home.

THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET

PracticalStrong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performanceover many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lastingdurability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so thatpile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading arereduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soilingdue to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as aresult additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuumingthe carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbentcloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

ComfortSoft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort andwarmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retentionand energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the homeagainst echo and room to room noise transfer.

SafetyFire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rateand tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets manysafety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured incontract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor whichprotects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal EnvironmentIndoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physicaland chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere inthe home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it whenthe atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbingairborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dustuntil vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in theatmosphere.Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote thegrowth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool isboth 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part ofanimal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply ofwool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpetproduction.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will producenitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibrethat has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life CycleAnalysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard forBritish Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measuredagainst man-made fibres.

How to decide whether to join a buyinggroup – and which…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently

•Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a memberof the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the nextnearest member of each buying group.

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, anyfees that would relate to your membership, how thebills are paid and whether your fees are refundable ifit doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for aconsultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see whatyou would actually use.

• Check out the product ranges offered including theown-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit yourflexibility to run your business the way you want.

Why join?Buying groups have been a highly successful feature ofthe floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, givingindependents the extra edge they need to competeeffectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one ofthe several buying groups which operate in our sectorand the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident,the resistance to the buying group concept among non-members appears to be centred on fears ofsurrendering some control to a committee – and mostparticularly compromising long-established relationshipsand negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer sellingacross a broad range of products is likely to improvemargins within a buying group – but you don’t need aleap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups foranswers...

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

Axminster ads to profile

Tall story

Tarkett, a world leader in general and sports flooring solutions, hassigned a licence agreement with the Australian company ‘Style’,owner of patented technology regarding the use of natural fibres.Under this agreement,Tarkett will produce a new generation ofparquet flooring made from eucalyptus wood – the first of its kindon the market. This is a responsible and environmentally friendlyproduct, developed with a view to preserving natural resources andusing renewable materials. It is primarily intended for commercialuse, and will be available in late 2010.

Using a unique, patented production process,Tarkett will producean ecological eucalyptus flooring that will be three times harderthan its oak equivalent. Eucalyptus Grandis is one of the mostcommon tree species in Asia, Europe and Australia. It is also a veryfast-growing tree, reaching maturity and becoming harvestable inonly 8 to 10 years, as opposed to almost 100 years for an oak tree. All the wood used comes from forests certified by the FSC (ForestStewardship Council) and PEFC (Pan European ForestCertification).

The production method and wood types used ensure flooringproducts that are highly wear resistant and extremely stable in allclimatic conditions and at any ambient temperature.

“This innovation complies with our approach to sustainabledevelopment. It also allows us to develop a new commercial woodoffering for collective customers, with a very attractive, warmingand hard-wearing product”, said Patrick Mathieu,Tarkett PresidentWestern Europe.

Axminster Carpets has announced the undertaking of a consumer-focused display advertising campaign that will see it target someeight million interested readers over a three-month period.

With display adverts in 10 of the leading home interest titles, thecampaign will run in September, October and November with theaim to promote the diversity of the Axminster Carpets portfolioand drive traffic to retailers through its new website.

Full-page advertisements will appear every month throughout thecampaign in the following titles; ‘BBC Homes and Antiques’,‘Country Homes & Interiors’, ‘Country Life’, ‘Country Living’,‘Homes and Gardens’, ‘House and Garden’, ‘House Beautiful’, ‘LivingEtc’, ‘Period Ideas’ and ‘Period Living’.

Combined, these magazines have a circulation of almost onemillion, which equates to a readership of over two and a halfmillion each month.

Richard Lawrence, Group Head of Marketing, commented: “Someconsumers still view Axminster Carpets as a high qualitymanufacturer of mainly bold patterned carpets. Our key aim is tostress to the consumer that we do produce the best in quality, butequally that it is available in many different carpet styles. Whethertraditional pattern, contemporary pattern, textured or plain, weoffer a comprehensive collection that appeals to all ages.

“Along with the product and brand awareness benefits we willgain from this initiative, we are keen that this campaign drivescustomers to Axminster Carpet’s retailers so the overall benefitsare felt by many.

“Our consistent editorial coverage in consumer titles over theyears has helped broaden awareness of our product diversity, butnow this advertising campaign will take our promotional activity tothe next level, further delivering our message of Natural, British,Beautiful.”

NewsThe Carpet Foundation in Focus

Carpet in the media in the AutumnThe Carpet Foundation will be active in the home interestpress with their Autumn promotional activity.

The £125,000 burst will see 34 insertions in 13 of the leading home interest titles that arebought by 1.3 million consumers every month. 66 per cent of the insertions are inpremium cover positions, illustrating the quality of the new advertising campaign and theFoundation’s unique relationship with the media. All four images will be used in theAutumn burst.

Alongside the advertising, several magazines are running carpet features so do look out forthe October editions, on sale from 1 September, of Country Homes & Interiors, PeriodLiving, BBC Homes & Antiques and House Beautiful.

IT’S OFFICIAL – OUR MEMBERS’CUSTOMERS ARE VERY SATISFIED

Independent research among 855 consumerswho had bought carpet in the last 12 monthscarried out on behalf of the Office of FairTrading has shown that customers of CarpetFoundation members were more satisfied thancustomers of businesses who were not.

The research, covering 382 consumers ofCarpet Foundation members and 473consumers who had used ‘other’ retailers, foundthat: 64% of consumers were ‘very satisfied’with how the product was sold to them by aCarpet Foundation member compared with 47per cent for non-member companies. Members’customers also had greater confidence thatthey had been fairly treated than non-membercustomers. Consumers purchasing from a CFmember were more likely to receive writteninformation or verbal advice on the followingareas than consumers at other retailers:

• Fitting/installation 79% v 62%• Suitability of the carpet 75% v 55%• Range of carpets available 62% v 46%

54% of Carpet Foundation member consumerswould spontaneously recommend their retaileras opposed to 31% of those who had usedother retailers. 75% of Carpet Foundationmember consumers would use their retaileragain compared with 57% in the case of others.

Commenting on the findings, CarpetFoundation chief executive Mike Hardiman said:“The results, from what is a robust sample, confirm what we have long known – thatCarpet Foundation members give unrivalledlevels of service. As well as higher satisfactionlevels, Carpet Foundation customers are morelikely to recommend retailers to others;more likely to use them in the future and areless likely to select on the basis of price alone.”

The Campaign for WoolHRH Prince Charles is spearheading a 5 year campaign to reignite the UK’s interest in andappreciation of wool. Although the carpet industry is the single biggest user of wool with70% of all wool produced in the UK going into carpet, the campaign embraces all appropriatesectors, including clothing, fashion, bedding, upholstery, interior textiles and building andinsulation materials. Pleasingly, it is being supported by all the major high street chainsincluding John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Aquascutum, Burberry, Jaeger,Top Shop and Hacketts.

The campaign kicks off with Wool Week which runs from 11 – 17th October – and therewill be alot of noise around it with some high profile ‘stunts’ and celebrity endorsements. For the carpet industry, point of sale to use in store and on products is being produced andwill be available shortly. On the high street, there will be a major POS campaignhighlighting the 10 reasons to buy wool. In addition, research is being undertaken intoconsumer attitudes to wool.

Carpet Foundation chief executive Mike Hardiman is on the campaign steering group andhas played a major role in getting the project off the ground. He commented: “It is a sadtruth that the price farmers are getting for their wool is less than the actual physical cost ofshearing it. Sheep numbers have fallen by 15% in the UK in the last three years and nowwool-less sheep are being genetically bred.

Improving consumer perceptions of wool rich carpet is essential for the continuity of supplyof wool. It is a staggering fact that if only 1.5% of consumers who currently buy a syntheticcarpet were to switch to wool, it would boost demand for wool by 2.8 million kilos. “

The Wool Benefits Series from Wools of New Zealand

Easy WoolNew Zealand wool’s superior quality enables extensive design, colour and pattern flexibility, while wool’s naturalability to shrug off dirt and spring back into shape after crushing ensures long-lasting good looks to complement andenhance any room setting.

Good Looks that LastWool fibres have a unique and complex combination ofproperties that make them the ideal carpet fibre. When itcomes to ease of maintenance, wool carpets are exceptional –as you would expect from a natural fibre.

Each wool fibre has a scaly outerstructure that holds soil high onthe pile where it can be easilyvacuumed. It also has a protectivemembrane, the epicuticle, whichhelps prevent wet spills frompenetrating the fibre. A simplemaintenance programme will keepyour wool carpet as good as theday it was installed.

Regular vacuuming is an easy and effective way to remove soiland dirt particles before they become embedded into the pileof the carpet.

When it comes to spots and stains, speed is of the essence. Butthere is no need to panic: simply blot up liquid spills or scoopup solids and treat the spot with a suitable agent recommendedfor wool carpets.

Periodic deep cleaning carried out by a professional cleaningcompany will remove the deepest soil, restoring the beauty andensuring the long life of the carpet.

No Need for Protective FinishesThe soil resistance and cleanability, both wet and dry, arecharacteristics inherent in the wool fibre and are not achievedby chemical treatments. This means that additional applicationof anti-soil agents is unnecessary. Due to the limited durabilityof many of these finishes, they can even cause problems withdifferential soiling and spot removal when partly worn.

Wools of New Zealand BrandThe coveted Wools of New Zealand brandis your assurance of quality – you can relaxin the knowledge that products carrying thebrand meet the highest standards. There area number of specific requirements whichhave to be met before a product can qualify;it signifies much more than just the use ofNew Zealand wool.

Wool in the spotlight as Princebecomes patron of campaignNews that HRH The Prince of Wales has officially become Patron of the Campaign forWool has been described as ‘the best thing that has happened to the wool industry formany years’ by Ian Hartley CEO of the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB).

The Prince announced his official commitment to the sheep farmer and wool textileindustry at a small gathering of the farming, wool textile and retail sectors at theNational Woollen Museum in Llandysul, (Dyfed) Wales at the end of June.

Referring to the many fantastic attributes of wool, he commented: “My growingunderstanding of the fibre’s many naturally ‘smart’ attributes has only served to provethat wool should be better appreciated by everyone and I am delighted that so manydesigners and major names have put their strength behind it.”

Ian Hartley CEO at the BWMB said, “Our sheep farmers and our textile industry alreadyknow that wool is a quality fibre for fashion and interiors. It is the retailer and consumerthat need to realise that wool rich products have added value, they offer naturalsustainability and durability and that is why a profile building campaign is so important.

“We hope that we can bring a sea change to the mindset of consumers so that wool isunderstood, appreciated and properly valued. Ultimately the retail price must allow formore acceptable margins in the upward chain and through to the producer.

“Our producers firmly believe that the time is right for wool as the environmentalagenda rises and people become more conscious that their choices have an impact onthe world we live in. The Prince with his serious interest in these issues is the perfectPatron for the Campaign and we believe this unified effort can make a long lastingdifference throughout the wool business.”

British Wool will run an ‘About Wool for Carpet’ seminar at the Harrogate Flooring Show on Monday 6thSeptember in celebration of the Campaign for Wool which has its consumer launch in October.

“We wanted to do something different this year and the idea of an educational seminar about woolfor carpet seemed the right thing to do because we have so many important messages to get over,”said Tim Booth, product development manager at the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB).“The Campaign for Wool has had a tremendous impact on the profile of wool particularly since HRH The Princeof Wales officially announced his patronage.”

Significant retail interest is already being seen and many of the major consumer lifestyle and interior magazineshave put their strength behind it. October will see lots of special features on wool in product to create interestand ensure that consumers receive the wool message.

The Wool Week promotion during 11th to 17th October is supported by John Lewis and Marks and Spencer, both proudly leading the way for High Street profile but many other well known brands and retailers are also

involved as are several leading industryorganisations and associations.

“We want the carpet retailers to haveevery opportunity to benefit from this campaign as a lot of BritishWool is in carpets and so during the seminar we will be talking about WoolWeek and wool promotions.”

“However, we will also talk up the true benefits of wool and the advantagesof choosing wool carpet for the home. Additionally, there will be anopportunity to look at the ways the BWMB works with the industry includingretailer promotions.”

“We are delighted to be at the show and we hope that we get plenty ofpeople attending the seminar and we look forward to seeing both retailersand industry colleagues there.”

The British Wool Marketing Board seminar will be held in the Queen’s Suiteat 3pm on Monday 6th September.

Rescue hopes after Duttons’ demise

Major manufacturer Duttons Carpets has become the first high profilecasualty of the recession this year. The company, the UK’s second largestcarpet manufacturer, called in the receiver on July 9 - days before facingcourt action to recover unpaid taxes.

It is still hoped the Blackburn-based manufacturer can find a trade buyer andas The Stocklists went to press, union leaders at the plant said they were“encouraged” by discussions understood to be taking place regarding apossible management buy-out.

The company has continued trading while talks have carried on. “DuttonCarpets is a productive, viable and important business and it still has a futureif the right buyer can be found,” said the official receiver, Christopher Rattenof RSM Tenon.

Mr Ratten cited ‘cash flow difficulties’ and the receivers were called in justdays before the Inland Revenue would have taken the company to court totry to recover in unpaid taxes and social security.

Duttons made pre-tax losses of £311,000 in the year ending 31 March 2009and a figure of £585,000 was recorded in the accounts as payable to the taxauthorities.

Though less well known to consumers and some retailers, Duttons plays akey role in the UK carpet industry as the country’s largest “commissionmanufacturer” – making own-label products for other manufacturers –concentrating on tufting wool-rich carpets. More recently, the company hasinvested in new plant to service buyers in the contract market which wasseen as more resilient than the domestic sector.

The implications of any closure would be felt across the industry with theloss of the six million square metres of carpet that Duttons manufacturedeach year.

Some 120 jobs at the Griffin Mill manufacturing base are at risk.Thebusiness, founded in 1979, is wholly owned by its chairman, Alan Booth.Managing Director is John Wright.

Blackburn MP, ex-Labour minister Jack Straw is following the affair : “This is acompany I know very well and have been working with. I hope they can pullthrough.” His first major involvement with the company was when severeflooding in 2003 provided a major and expensive setback for the business.

The zombies are here

There are now 150 companies in the UK Floor Coverings industrythat are “Zombie” businesses. These companies have seen theirperformance deteriorate to such as extent that they now existmerely to pay off their debts and survive.

David Pattison, author of the new Plimsoll Analysis, explains: “Thesecompanies are in a state, posting growing losses and, despite theobvious freeze in the credit markets, increasing their debts. They areZombie businesses with debts at an average of 48% of turnover –they exist to service their out of control liabilities. Many are also usingtheir suppliers to finance their growing losses, taking twice as long asto pay their bills as the industry average of 52 days”

So can these Zombies be saved? Pattison is clear that not all willsurvive and those that do have a lot of pain ahead, “The first thingthey need to do is sort out their immediate finances. They have toconvince their banks and suppliers to keep supporting them or not

pull the plug. If they can pull that off then the hard work really starts. They urgently need to stem their losses and control costs. The longerit takes them to address these issues, the harder and less likely it isthey will ever fix them”.

However, Pattison points to some attractive takeover targets hiddenamong the Zombies, “Canny investors are seeing an opportunity topick up a bargain. Some of these companies, stuck in a zombie statebecause of their balance sheet, have lots of potential for new ownersto turn it around. We picked 61 companies that we feel have themost potential”.

Feature: Buying Groups

Deeper discounts, wider margins and stronger salessupport - what’s not to like! Buying groups are bidding foryour business in a drive for membership to overcome theuncertainty of some retailers about the role of the buyinggroups. With unprecedented coordination, the leading buying groups are workingtogether to reassure retailers that they can reap the benefits withoutsurrendering their independence.

This initiative sees the launch of a new factsheet in The Stocklists (see page12) which most of the UK’s major groups are supporting to informretailers how to evaluate the benefits of joining a buying group and how toselect the right one for their business. In addition, the groups arecollaborating on a joint trade event next year in the Midlands (see opposite).

“It is perhaps surprising that not many more than a thousand retailersare in a buying group and that the growth in membership has beenrelatively slow,” said Chris Moffat of SMG. “In a market as tight as this, there is safety in numbers and the groups can help retailers protect andbuild their businesses in many different ways.”

The new factsheet has been drawn up to equip retailers to considertheir options carefully and to ask the right questions. Buying groups dovary quite considerably in their style and approach – and in the waydiscounting and fees are handled. The level of support also varies fromgroup-to-group.

“We’ve been working onthis project for somemonths,” said DavidSpragg of The Stocklists.“Times are hard and wewanted retailers to beable to make an informedjudgement of how theycould boost theirprofitability through thebuying power of a group.

“It isn’t right for everyone, but every retailer should have run the sliderule over his business to see if a buying group could make a positivedifference – no matter how many good deals you already have with yourfavourite manufacturers!”

The factsheet includes a checklist of how to approach buying groups forinformation and how to make a selection between the groups. It urgesretailers to identify groups that will best suit their business and then havethese groups draw up a detailed financial analysis to demonstrate thebenefits.

Most of the main buying groups – ACG, BRM, Flooring One, Greendaleand SMG - are supporting the campaign.

Buying groups in the flooring trade have confirmedplans to work together to host their own trade show in2011 following the success of a pilot event in theMidlands in May this year. The new venture builds on the success of the well-establishing Solihull show which the Flooring Onebuying group organises each year for its members. The event is staged at the Cranmore Park headquartersof Flooring One’s parent group AIS and takes advantageof the state-of-the-art exhibition facilities at the venue. This year, for the first time, Flooring One, left the doorsopen after the first day so that other buying groupscould invite some of their own members on a secondday when additional manufacturers stands were addedto the event.

The extra day was described as a “huge success” byBRM managing director Paul Phillips: “Feedback fromsuppliers was very positive.”Now a strategy meeting of major buying groups hasbeen scheduled for September to plan a three-dayevent at Cranmore Park next year – the dates havealready been fixed for the 18th and 19th of May –with Flooring One’s own day on Tuesday, 17th.

“We want to stress that this is not an attempt to rivalthe annual events in Harrogate and the NEC,” saysChris Moffat, Chief Executive of SMG. “We willcontinue to encourage all members to attend theseequally important shows.”

He added: “I am delighted to see the independentbuying group sector working together in an attempt tooffer maximum cost-effective support to the industryin the current difficult economic climate.”The event always attracts praise for the quality of itsorganisation and the sophistication of the venue. Andit’s very popular with manufacturers as the smallerstands are substantially cheaper than conventionaltrade shows and the visitors are quality, independentbuyers.

Axminster’s Steve Upperton said the company had hada “brilliant” event. “Why haven’t we done this before,it’s very cost effective and the time of year is right forall concerned.”Jeremy Wilson of Ulster Carpets commented: “It’s greatto see so many British manufacturers under one roof. Itwas very successful. The venue is excellent – easy toget to and to park and it’s a good size. Some 50 suppliers to the various buying groups wereinvolved in the 2010 event and the number is likely toincrease for the full show next year. Apart fromAxminster and Ulster, leading names include Abingdon,Associated Weavers, Brockway, Bronte, Cormar, Cavalier,Edel Telenzo, Furlong, Mayfield, Mohawk, Ryalux andVictoria Carpets.

Rugs were represented by companies including Asiatic,Mastercraft and Rama while smooths are supported byAmtico, Eletile, Pergo and Forbo.

“There is verylittle new and

innovative thoughtgoing into POS.”

“With the internet, there is no guaranteethat the retailer with

the tombola will get theorder!”

“Why can’tmanufacturers keep astock of pattern books

available?”

Retailers debate POS… and paying for it!More than two-thirds of retailers rate recent improvements in point-of-sale displays – but the debate continues as to how it should all bepaid for. And retailers are asking for price protection to avoidbecoming internet showrooms.

In our latest survey, 69% of respondents said displays were gettingbetter and a massive 93% said manufacturers were good at keepingsampling up-to-date. 53% said POS was ‘extremely important’ tocreating sales and almost 40% said ‘very important’.

The survey comes at a time when there has been a noticeableincrease in investment by flooring suppliers in new POS in a bid tosecure more ‘real estate on the high street’. But it’s an expensive partof promoting their business and one they can’t afford to get wrong inthe current climate.

While there was a general appreciation of improving quality, almost 30%of respondents accused manufacturers of wheeling out the ‘same oldstuff ’.A North East retailer said:“There is very little original and innovativethought going into POS. Most of the 'new' stuff is just tinkering.”

We asked retailers to league table the different display systems andwall displays came out top in motivating sales at 53% with lecternscoming second at 24% followed by an almost equal appreciation oftombolas and pattern books in joint third place.

One retailer complained about inconsistency in the merchandisingapproach of some manufacturers: “Why can't manufacturers, orwholesalers, keep a stock of pattern books available? It seems when aproduct is launched, they go out with a blunderbuss approach but ifyou try to get one a few months later, there are none available.”

Interestingly, only a third of respondents thought they’d got POSabout right – 47% said they had too much display material in theirstore.

There were mixed reactions to recent innovations. 81% of retailersdidn’t like display photography taking up space for samples but 53%welcome the recent introduction of video screens on POS – only25% found them annoying and unhelpful.

The use of strong colours in wall displays were welcomed by 75%of respondents ‘even if consumers don’t buy much of thesecolours. Stands made from wood were the most popular by far atjust over 50% with wood and metal on 19% but metal only gotthe thumbs down with just 6% support.

How POS is paid for is a continuing bone of contention andgenerates mixed responses from retailers. About 50% thoughtrebate schemes to finance POS was fair but another 43% said more

“Nothing wrong withpaying for POS but

we need protection onprice so we’re not usedas a shop window for

material should be provided free. However, a surprising 56% said theywould be prepared to pay more for better displays.

38% of retailers expect to spend around £1000 annually on POS anda further 31% allocated around £2000.

The influence on the internet was an unexpected finding from thesurvey which came out strongly in our ‘soapbox’ feedback. A South Westretailer said: “The manufacturer gets to display his products locally butwith the advent of the internet there is no guarantee that the retailerwith the tombola will secure the order, but its likely the manufacturerwill. Manufacturers need to protect their retailer floorspace against e-sales by only listing on their web sites outlets where product is displayed.Working as an internet showroom has no future!”

A North East retailer agreed: “There is nothing wrong with paying forPOS but we need some protection on price otherwise there is atendency to be used as a shop window for the web.”

‘Selective’ show gets support

The new-style show for flooring, as part of the UK’s highlysuccessful Interiors show in January, has met with a positiveresponse from exhibitors. The NEC event is already half way to its target.

“It’s going really well,” said Sunny Patel of Interiors organiser UBM.“We have had a very positive response and the industry is wakingup to the opportunity this event has to give them a new audience.”

The flooring hall at the NEC event in January is aiming for 50 – 60exhibitors and has secured 25 bookings so far. Lead exhibitorsinclude Brintons, Crucial Trading, Amtico and IVC.

UBM are promising a new audience for the flooring industry, building on the 25,000 visitors who already come to Interiors everyyear – 7,000 of whom have expressed an interest in carpets, rugsand smooths.

While the visitor profile at Harrogate is retail-led, Interiors is likelyto deliver more specifiers, architects and interior design specialists. The event also hopes to build a strong contract flooring interest.

Organisers are aiming for an ‘exclusive’ approach to recruitexhibitors. “We are being a little choosey,” says Sunny. “As a launchevent, we want visitors who make the effort to come and see us toexperience a high quality show. All the right companies will bethere.”

Interiors opens on January 23 for four days in Hall 2 of the NECBirmingham. It is a major event with 600 exhibitors across manysectors including furniture, soft furnishing, interior design and lightingas well as flooring.

Two months ago, UBM withdrew plans for a National Floor Showin September at the NEC which was scheduled to take place in thesame week as the Harrogate Flooring Show.

New targets for landfill

The second annual Carpet Recycling UK Conference held atthe Institute of Engineering and Technology in Birmingham lastmonth has made important progress in setting new targets onlandfill diversion.

Attended by over 110 delegates, the conference focussed onthe central theme of setting a voluntary industry backed targetfor carpet recycling and featured speakers, discussions and casestudies exploring the actions required to deliver on new goals.

Jane Gardner, who took over co-ordination of CarpetRecycling UK earlier this year, used her keynote presentationto call for the industry to work together on a target-ledvoluntary agreement to reduce waste to landfill by 25% by 2015.

Whilst acknowledging this as a demanding target, she made afirm case for its achievability, citing evidence of the excellentprogress made by the association's manufacturing memberstowards zero post industrial waste by 2012.

With several of this group predicted to meet the target by theend of this year, she contended that rapid improvements inwaste reduction are eminently possible, given access to newopportunities for diverting waste streams, a key benefit thesecompanies gain through Carpet Recycling UK membership.

This session also revealed a significant overall increase in UKcarpet wastes diverted from landfill in the past year, totalling26,000 tonnes, up 20% on 2008/2009 figures. Rates ofrecycling and reuse have held up well despite economicconditions and cutbacks in carpet production, demonstratingthe efforts of businesses in the carpet industry to repositionand gain a competitive edge in a depressed market. This hasbeen matched by an increase in recycling and waste processingoutlets, from 6 in 2008 to 16 this year, with a forecast of 30 tobe in place by the end of 2010.

Dating back to 1539, Chester Racecourse is one of Britain’s oldest andmost famous racecourses. Carpenter, one of the world’s biggest producersof PU underlays was asked to supply 400sqm of its Firmstep underlay forthe restaurant area and 225sqm of Powerstep for the director’s boxes.

“We were asked to supply underlay that would help prevent prematurewear in busy contract areas. The Powerstep and Firmstep underlay offerluxury and comfort, yet both are perfect for heavy traffic areas.” said HelenRowberry, national sales manager.

Said Lee Rogers, fitter: “Carpenter is my preferred choice of underlaybecause of the quality, durability and the lightness of the rolls, which makesworking with the products so much easier.”

Firmstep is a 7mm thick bonded polyurethane underlay and produced forheavy contract use. Powerstep is a 9mm think bonded polyurethaneunderlay produced for luxury use, and is ideal for domestic/contract usewhere high energy absorption is needed. These are just two of acomprehensive collection of nine different underlays offered by Carpenter.
