In a wide market growth context, the growth strategy abroad and the con-

stant research of optimal levels of ef-ficiency and innovation were revealed indispensable and fundamental for both the present and the future of the biggest power company worldwide: ENEL. No-wadays the firm not only holds high up its leadership in the power field, but went up to the second step of the podium amongst the European power suppliers. the Stock Exchange: Enel has been qu-oted since 1999 in Milan Stock Exchange and actually it boasts the highest number of stockholders, 1, 7 millions of retails and institution in the Italian company-’s panorama present in the Italian Stock Exchange “Piazza Affari”. Various are the strategies that make of Enel a unique and exclusive firm. The progressive expan-sion of Enel’s range to 21 countries, di-stributed in 4 different continents around the globe, made of the group a versatile player able at painstakingly managing a much diversified system of plants. This far-flung net of stations swings amongst the hydroelectric, thermoelectric, nuc-lear, Aeolian and photovoltaic fields. Besides the production, distribution and sale of power, Enel attends even the gas trade. Enel’s 2007 annual report was of an installed power of 75.500 MW and it gathers more than 50 million customers around the world. Unbeatable leader of the Italian electric-power and second na-tional operator in the natural gas market with more than 2, 5 million clients and a 10% market share volume. Approxima-tely 73,500 employees work hard every-day to light the most part of the world in behalf of ENEL. Enel aims at bringing higher and higher the quality of its se-rvices. Concerning to the technological advancing as well as the financial plan, Enel’s dedication is wholehearted and it is oriented towards the development of innovation processes and technologies that allow holding down the manufactu-re cost and that improve the procurement safety of the raw matter with an overlook at the greenhouse effect reduction. Sho-oting for a sustainable growth, Enel pays big attention and enormous resources to the research and technological innovation on every side of the field, quickly gaining tangible results. In the time-frame betwe-en 2000 and 2007 Enel dropped the Co2 emissions down to 21 million tons, equ-al to the 32%. Since 2002 it commenced research programmes as contribute to the demonstration of the industrial effective-ness of all the applicable technologies of the CO2 capture. The business is amongst the charter members of ZEP ( zero emis-

sions platform), that gathers all the major European power companies. It is planning to build to pilot-plants within the next two years, and one or two demonstrative plants in full order within the 2015. From 2002 onwards tens of million Euros have been invested by Enel still on the actu-ation of demonstrative programmes about the carbon dioxide. Above all, in every case the work was and is always aimed at a proofed technology, easily applicable on the industrial scale and economically affordable, with an emission-free coal usage. On the other hand Enel is also very active in the research of the oxygen-bur-ning as well as the pre-combustion and usage of the hydrogen. Since more than a year it has been commenced by the corpo-ration an overall investigation concerning the underground storage CO2 potentiality. But above all Enel is a development plan of the renewable energy sources. The plan ‘Environment and Innovation’ schedules

investments of 7, 4 billion Euros up to the 2012, out of which 6, 8 are focused on the growth of the firm in the field of the re-newable energies, especially the Aeolian, whereas 600 billion Euros will patronize the research projects from the hydrogen to the thermodynamic solar, from the most avant-garde technologies for the CO2 capture, previously mentioned. Enel spreads is tentacles in Europe (Bulgaria, Greece, France, Italy, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Spain), in North America ( Canada and United States), Latin America ( Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Panama). With ‘Endesa’, the presence of Enel spreads to Argentina, Colombia, Morocco, Peru and Portugal. The operation Endesa brought to an end in with the Spanish partner ‘Ac-ciona’ along with the completion of ‘Opa’ in Russia for OGK-5. It permitted the po-wer company to install itself at the second position in Europe amongst this field ope-rators. A foreign growth badly wanted and pursued by the business management that required also a corporate restructuring of the branches of Enel around the world. Hence it bobs up the reason of the origin of the subdivision ‘Iberia and Latina Ame-rica’. The main activities of Endesa are represented by production, engineering and merchandising of the electric energy, plus the sail and distribution of the natu-ral gas in Spain. Concerning to the other countries where the Italian electric group is present, a particular attention is focu-sed on the Russian market that, with its liberalization and privatization processes, it is amongst the new bright development prospective towards which the Enel Gro-up orientated its interest. Besides, last year Enel got in to the upstream of the ‘natural gas’ acquiring the 40% ( together with ENI which detains the 60%) of the gas development and extraction licences in important fields, with stocks of appro-ximately 5 million barrels equivalent of petroleum in the peninsula of Yamal and in the electric generation field, plus the OPA success, concluded in March 2008, with the 55,8% of Genco OGK-5 that has at its disposal 8,220 MW balanced betwe-en gas and coal. In France Enel took part to the realization of the first new genera-tion EPR (European Pressurized water Reactor) nuclear plant with a quote of 12,5%, which is the most advanced nuc-lear technology currently existent. On the other hand, Enel has been selected in Gre-ece as best bidder for the construction of a new CCGT plant and it purchased about 130 MW of Aeolian plants. In Albania the company has initialled a Memorandum

of Understanding with the local Ministry of Economy for the developing of a coal station up to 1,800 MW capacity along with the realization of an interconnection which will allow the transport to Italy of a piece of the production cake. In Ro-mania Enel purchased during April 2005 the 51% of the assets of two other power companies ( Enel distributie Banat and Enel Distributie Dobrogea) with their 1,4 million of customers. After the buyout of ‘Elettrica Muntenia Sud’ ( active in Buca-rest area), completed the 5th of june 2008, the company doubled its presence in the country with roughly 2,5 million of custo-mers. Nevertheless, the renewable energy source keeps being on the top list of many other countries, but Enel proves itself as one of the biggest operators in the field of power and renewable energy. Many things have changed during last few years, espe-cially in the Italian trade. The latter has been liberalized since last year and now, along with the English and Scandinavian markets, it is the most open in Europe. For this reason nowadays in Italy there is the activity of the major European groups and about a hundred local and national opera-tors competing for big and small clients, including families. << Concerning the Italian market, we need to intervene with massive investments diversifying the energy supply sources, rebalancing the production mix extremely unbalanced in the gas field>> says Mrs Cecilia Ferranti to our reporter Claudio Corciulo. << The lot has to be done always considering the oil price inflation>>. With the Endesa and the ingress in the Russian market Enel completed the growth phase through re-markable buyouts. Furthermore Enel will keep investing on the research and deve-lopment, and pursuing the technological excellence keeping an eye on the environ-ment problems. The consolidation and the integration of the international buyouts, the improvement of the Italian production mi, the integration in the upstream and midstream gas field, the development of new technologies and of the nuclear gene-ration: all these things represent the very next future of Enel. At the same time the group will carry on portfolio optimization enterprises in order to improve the finan-cial position of the corporation. <<Thanks to the ethical code, the maintenance es-timate, the environment respect policy and the adoption of the best international strategies in transparency and corporate governance, we are very pride to num-ber ,among the Enel’s stockholders, the main international investments, insurance companies, pension and ethical funds.>>

Don’t stay in the dark then, Illuminate your life with Enel...
