ST. BENEDICT PARISH AND PREPARATORY SCHOOL In today’s gospel, as we reflect on the raising of Lazarus, we can recall the words spoken by Pope Francis when he reminded the faithful that this event shows us “there is no limit to the divine mercy, which is offered to everyone… The Lord is always ready to roll away the tombstone of our sins, which separate us from Him, the light of the living.” During this Lenten season, we are called to reflect on those things that separate us from God and we are thankful for a God that is always there waiting for us to return to Him. God’s mercy is continuously offered freely and to all. Today our RCIA catechumens and candidates participate in the third scrutiny, a rite that is meant to uncover, and then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in one’s heart, and then bring out, and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. Each test or trial that we encounter serves as an opportunity to turn toward, or away from God. We are all called to conversion and an ongoing response of our whole person turning in faith and in love to the God who loves us. It has been such a privilege to be part of the RCIA team, walking along this wonderful journey with our catechumens and candidates. Being part of the team has served to deepen my faith and has enabled me to deeply reflect on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Part of our prayer experiences together included time to learn and mediate on the Stations of the Cross. We learn from Jesus’ example that carrying our crosses as his disciples means self-denial and sacrifice. can become true disciples. As we feel the love of Christ, we need to remember the oppressed and the forgotten. We are called to not ignore or hurry past those in need. We can ask Jesus to help show us how to love as he has loved us. The good news for us is that here in the vibrant and faith filled community of St Ben’s, we have many great opportunities to not forget the needs of others. One such opportunity that is coming up in the near future is our Easter dinner. The buffet-style meal will be held on Easter morning April 16th in Beaven and Ackerman hall from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. We are still seeking volunteers to help decorate, serve, host our guests, and clean up. We are greatly in need of more donations of cooked food including ham, potatoes, vegetables, desserts and beverages. Would you be able to help in anyway? You can easily do so using the sign up genius that is on the Human Concerns page of our web site: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4bacae2fa2fb6-stbenedicts, or by calling the Rectory. The generosity of our community for these ministry dinners never ceases to amaze me. As we extend ourselves in service of others, we truly are doing what Jesus calls us to do as his disciples. The dinner is a perfect way to share the blessings we have received from God whether it is with our time and talent in volunteering or with food donations to help others to enjoy a good meal. As we share our gifts with others and take the time to reflect on how we can live out our

discipleship, we soon realize that God’s grace and our perseverance are needed for spiritual growth. For our catechumens and candidates, the Easter Vigil is only the beginning of a commitment to a lifelong discovery and living out of the Christian message. We are all called to an “ongoing conversion,” an ever-present call to grow in faith and to live out that faith. We do this by deepening our relationship with God and with our fellow Christians. We are asked to live out the call to holiness in the world of family, work and community. We need to take our place alongside other members of the Church community for daily service of the kingdom of God. Helping out with the Easter dinner is just one of the many ways to get involved and put our faith into action. We know that all of the spiritual gifts given to us by God are to be used in loving service. When we use these God given gifts in service of others, we help to unify the body of Christ and promote the growth of God’s kingdom. This sharing of gifts is vital for each individual Christian as well as to the Church as we embrace and carry out the mission of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. As disciples of Christ, let us remember that it is our mission to proclaim that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. It means we live as a people of hope and that we spread that hope to others. As we approach Holy Week, let us pray that our own faith may be strengthened, so that we, like those in the story of Lazarus, can place all our hope in Him who is the resurrection and the life!

Stewardship ReflectionOne of the struggles we face is “the mystery of life.” Particularly during this Lenten season this is something on which we need to meditate. The readings on this Fifth Sunday of Lent address resurrection and call us to hear and consider what it means.

St. Paul certainly provides us thoughts on resurrection in the second reading from his letter to the Romans when he says, “If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead

will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you.” Is the Spirit dwelling within us? What have we done during this Lent to bring that Spirit to life? Those are questions we must ask always but especially at this time.

We hear the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead in the Gospel Reading from St. John. This is a reminder to us that resurrection is ongoing. The idea of dying and rising is something we all need to do every day. Much of this has to do with relationships, our relationship with God, with those close to us, and with all those with whom we may come in contact. Now during Lent is a time when we need to give these relationships a particular prominence.

There is another facet of Lazarus being raised from the dead that is notable during our Lenten preparations and our striving for resurrection. When Lazarus emerges from the tomb, he is “tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth.” Are we bound in some ways? Are what binds us things that we should now be trying to free ourselves from? In these final days of Lent we still have time to judge what it is that keeps us from finding the new life offered by Christ. Only Jesus can give us this new life. The Lord reminds us in today’s Gospel, “… if you believe, you will see the glory of God.” Hope is there for us, but we must seize it.

Head and Heart Discipleship

For the past year, this page has focused on all the ways that we grow closer to Jesus on our journey of faith. As we, at St. Benedict, have had a more intentional and

specific focus on growing as disciples of Jesus, our Catechetical Commission and Spiritual Life Commission articulated that sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of what we learn (Head) and sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of our prayer, retreat experience, mission or some encounter

(Heart). So not only will we hightlight the ways that we learn (Head) about Jesus in our Catechetical Conversations, we will also hightlight the ways we experience Jesus (Heart).

2Spiritual Life Gatherings Please mark your calendars now and join your friends and community in what will be beautiful faith-filled gatherings. All are welcome and feel free to bring something to share in one of our Spiritual gatherings. Who knows where the Spirit will take us…

Adult & Child Catechesis

Meet RCIA Candidate Collins HunterThis is who I am: Deep, joy filled, intensely curious, friendly: Choir member who absolutely loves being a cantor with my family. It is the fulfillment of a long held dream of mine to pray with each and every one of you in our liturgical services, from Christmas Advent to Resurrection Sunday, and during all the Ordinary Time. I celebrate the Servant of my Soul, Jesus Christ, I freely serve him right back.

This is what I’ve done: I came to Chicago ten years ago, on August 26, 2006 to complete and receive a Masters in Theological Studies at McCormick Theological Seminary from 2006 to 2010. I served as the Assistant Pastor of the United Park Presbyterian Church in Hyde Park for a year while I was in school, and God blessed me with wonderful friends while I was there. Surprisingly for most people, (but not to my mother), before that, I came from an eleven year practice in law. I owned my own law firm as a Criminal Defense Attorney for six years. Prior to that, I served with the Missouri Public Defenders of Kansas City for several years. I lived in Kansas City for sixteen years, (intermittently with my parents) when they first retired there from New York and after I left the U.S Army as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps at Fort Leavenworth. I have held many challenging and stimulating positions since then. Presently, I work for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Regional Office in Chicago for the past two years.

This is where I’m going with my family of choice at St. Benedict’s: ...Serving residents of Chicago whose needs compel me to action ...Leading a dynamic, faith based small group at St. Benedict’s and having fun getting to know each other along the way ...Singing in and praying with the choir during Mass

My intuition tells me: Following Jesus Christ as a disciple at St. Benedict’s will be a calling and my heart’s desire to share the grace of God with one another and our gifts of God in unity and love.

Seder Meal Wednesday, April 12thChristians share with Jews a story and experience: once we were bound in slavery, but the Lord, with an out stretched arm brought us to freedom, to covenant, to a Promised Land. That is one of the best reasons why many Christians choose to celebrate the Passover Meal, the Seder, each year. Through the centuries, the ritual of this night has allowed each generation to make that story its own. Here at St Benedict for over 30 years we have made it our own. Plan to join us on this special night of prayer and praise. Bring a dish to pass and share as it’s potluck on Wednesday April 12th at 6:30pm at Beaven Hall. All are welcome. Questions? Call Maribel Selva 773 616 6743 or email at [email protected]
