What is the Hero’s Journey?

•The hero’s journey is a common story pattern or plot.

•It can be found in texts from ancient civilizations fairy tales, novels from every era, and in newly released Hollywood blockbusters.

Step 1: The Ordinary WorldThis is the everyday life and environment of the hero.

Step 2: Call to AdventureThe call to adventure is the person’s life when they are first given noticethat everything is going to change, and he/she will going on a journey.

Step 3: Refusal of the CallThe hero refuses to accept the call because of fear, insecurity, a senseof inadequacy, or another reason.

Step 4: Crossing the ThresholdThis is when the hero takes his/hers first step of the journey.

Step 5: Challenges and TemptationsOn the journey, the hero will face many challenges and temptations.These will prepare the hero for his/hers final challenge.

Step 6: The OrdealThe Ordeal is the final and most difficult challenge in the hero’s journey. It isthe task the hero must overcome to complete his/hers journey.

Step 7: RewardThis is what the hero receives for success on his/hers

journey.

Step 8: The Road BackThe path on which the hero returns to the ordinary world.
