Main aim of the research:•
Estimating health of spruce stands in the Beskidy Mts.
in
terms of quantity and quality•
forecasting changes of health
status of the stages
The research was conducted as part of Magdalena Main’s doctoral dissertation ‘Monitoring i modelling of regeneration capabilities of a forest damaged by industrial emisions –
a
study based on satellite images of Beskid Śląski’.

Research areaResearch areaResearch area
WĘGIERSKA GÓRKA Forest District
UJSOŁY Forest District
Selected research plots had to meet the following requirements:
•
species composition: a pure stand of spruce•
age: 60-120 years old
•
height: 600-1300 m above sea level•
various exposure and slope factors
•
various damage factors
From among all suitable plots, 77 were randomly selected, with:
•
32 plots in Węgierska Górka Forest District,•
45 plots in Ujsoły Forest Distric.
Three measurement points were established in each plot, resulting in 231 points in total.

Field works in the summer of 2006: •
instrumental measurements of the Leaf Area Index (LAI) by means of a direct measurement
•

Satellite pictures were obtained for the research area, including:
•
Landsat TM,
1987 and 2005•
QuickBird, 2006
and the SILP database.
By analyzing the pictures, •
NDVI (Normalized Differenced Vegetation Index)
•
NDMI (Normalized Difference Moisture Index)were determined for the two periods.

Field observations and the data in the SILP database helped classify the Landsat TM 2005 imaging.
A ‘coniferous forest’
class was determined, being the spruce stand. It comprises five subclasses with regard to the degree of damage:
I –
healthy II –
minor damage
III –
medium damageIV –
strong damage
V –
dying. Trees were assessed according to the percentage of
defoliation and decolourization, and degree of canopy cover.

Outcomes: Toxic industry emissions until 1990th intensified environment pollution and degradation of vegetation in CEECData: Late summer Landsat images lead to severe problem with atmospheric correction – strong topography influenceChange analysis: NDMI may be a better vegetations indices as NDVI for spruce forest change detectionDamage grade analysis: Monoculture spruce forest stands in Polish Beskidy Mtn. represented mostly in III and IV damage gradeVerification: Field measurements and Forest GIS information are irreplaceable as a verification-tools.
