The
Star-Spangled Banner Maryland State Society, Children of the American Revolution
Volume 57, Issue 1 Taking Flight with Maryland C.A.R.! August 2014
Hello Maryland C.A.R. Flight Crew!
I hope everyone is having a great summer and
hope you are getting excited for the brand new
C.A.R. year! I am so happy to serve such a great
State Society. Since being installed at Mount
Vernon, I was able to attend an Honor Flight with
Ms. Atherton in Washington DC at the World War
II Memorial. We walked and talked with many
WWII veterans and listened to the history they
lived. It was so great to hear these stories and
learn about what they did.
I was also able to attend a Hungerford Resolves
society meeting where we learned about the State
Project, “Taking Flight with Maryland C.A.R.”
and the National Project, “O! Say Can You See?”
and I installed their new officers. It was great
seeing so many members excited about being
officers and also having them be excited about the
upcoming year. The following weekend I attended
a Memorial Day service in Bethesda MD with Ms.
Atherton where we laid a wreath in the State’s
honor.

Hello Maryland C.A.R.
We are already off to a great start this year as we
begin Taking Flight with Maryland C.A.R.!
Chase and I are working together to create fun and
educational programs to help everyone learn about
both the National and the State Programs for
2014-2015.
I was so happy to see so many of you at State
Conference, National Convention and Eastern
Regional! We did a lot of work last year, earned a
lot of awards and had a great time doing it. Chase
has also been busy representing the State at
several events this year which you’ll read about in
this newsletter.
We are very lucky to have the site of the National
Project entitled O! Say Can You See right here in
our State, and we are even more lucky to be able
to hold our State packet meeting right there at the
Flag House Museum in Baltimore. More details
for the packet meeting are included in the
newsletter. I’m looking forward to seeing you all
at our packet meeting on August 16th

hope to see everyone at the State Packet meeting on August 16th at the Flag House in Baltimore MD.
During this time we will get to visit the National Project first hand and learn about the State and National

Maryland State Conference Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel, Wincopin Circle, in Columbia, Maryland
I went to the Maryland C.A.R. State Conference in Columbia and had a great time. Even though I am not a fan of the Monsters University movie I liked the pizza party that started the conference. I saw friends I had not seen in a long time. I was also a page again this year. I enjoyed paging a lot. When you are a page, you get to deliver messages to people and be helpful. I had a lot of fun delivering the messages. My favorite part of the conference was the field trip to the oldest railroad station around. It was in Ellicott City and it was really old! We took a tour and got to look inside an old railroad caboose and an old ticket station waiting room. Listening to the reports isn't my favorite part of state conference but it did feel good to hear all the awards given for everything we had done all year long. The dance after the banquet is always fun. The grand march starts everything off and everyone makes funny poses when they come in. Then they make the seniors leave and we dance and dance and dance! If you have never been to State conference, you should go. There is so much to do and it is always interesting and most of all it is fun!

National C.A.R. Convention Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel, 2800 South Potomac Ave, in Arlington, Virginia
I went to the National C.A.R. Convention in Arlington VA and had a fun time. This was my first full National CAR Conference and the fun never stopped. We had a great conference and the balloting and stickers being put all over us was really fun. At night we had a big dinner and I earned pins that were presented by National President Caitlin Collins who I had lots of fun with when she came to the SAR Patriots Ball and we danced and had fun all night. On Saturday night we held a big party with inflatable bouncies, a dance floor, food and drinks and stayed up until almost 2am while our parents went to bed. There was so much to do and so much fun! If you didn’t go to a Convention previously, please come next time and see how much fun it is. It is great to make new friends and see old ones every time.

I had lots of fun at the 61st Eastern Regional
Conference in New Jersey. I met many new people as
well as catching up with old friends. During
conference we learned about the National President’s
Program. National President, Betsy Ehmcke, has
chosen “O! Say Can You See” as her theme. Her
project is to raise money for the Star Spangled Flag
House in Baltimore. Skits were given by the National
Board telling each officer’s and each committee
chairman’s program and contest. The skits are fun
because the C.A.R.’s in the audience get to participate.
At the end of the meeting on Wednesday there was a
workshop for members. Teams were formed to make up
a C.A.R. cheer. My team was awesome! We had the
best cheer and won the contest. We did our cheer at the
banquet in the evening.
Regionals is not all work. There was a pool party on
Tuesday evening. On Wednesday we did a walking tour
around historic Princeton, had a banquet, and a dance.
I am so glad I went to the Eastern Regional Meeting.
Next year it will be held in New York. New York here I
come!
Lauren Jenne, Terra Rubra, Age 12
This year, I had the opportunity to attend three
regionals; Eastern Regional in Monroe Township
NJ, Southeastern Regional in Peachtree City GA,
and the Rocky Mountain Regional in Denver CO.
Each regional was different and each one was a lot
of fun. I kicked off my C.A.R. summer at Eastern
Regional where I saw many of you in attendance!
I was able to participate as a dancing snowflake
and show off all my great dance moves (however I
was shown up at the dance by Honorary State
President Katie Kraft and State Chaplin Lauren
Jenne). The tour was of Princeton University and
the history behind it and the surrounding area. The
tour showed how even small places can have such
a large impact on history.
After Eastern was over, many on the National
Board and even some Marylanders went to Six
Flags NJ. We learned here how Mrs. Brokaw is
the best at ladder climbing and screaming is only
half the fun at an amusement park.
The next leg of my C.A.R. summer was
Southeastern Regional. I started off once again at
Six Flags GA and then straight to Dixie Land (a
smaller amusement park near the hotel). The next
day was the start of the conference. This time
around I got to be a Delaware Shore character and
try my best at a terrible New Jersey accent. The
tour was of Noah’s Ark, an animal sanctuary for
many types of animals including a lion, tiger and
bear, OH MY. The dance was a bit calmer this
time because I had no competition on the dance
floor.
The final leg of my regional tour was the Rocky
Mountain Regional. Rocky began with a late night
as my flight arrived at 1 am EST. For my final
performances, I got to be the Delaware Shore
character again and also a bratty Magic School
Bus character. This time for a tour we attended a
Colorado Rockies baseball game. Two great sights
from this game were a Rockies WIN and me
walking around the stadium with a plastic bag
covering my head. I left at 3:30 am the next day
tired and more tired.
From the regionals, I experienced great memories
with great friends and fun times getting to explore
the country. I hope all of you get to attend other
regionals in your futures in C.A.R.

Memorializing Revolutionary War Heroes at
Old St. Paul's Cemetery
by Spencer Paire, age 17
On the morning of June 1, 2014, Maryland
C.A.R.'s First Vice President, Spencer Paire, his
senior, Ms. Holly Atherton, and Hungerford
Resolve Society senior, Monica Paire, attended
the annual memorial service hosted by the S.A.R.
at Old St. Paul's Cemetery. Along with members
of the S.A.R., S.R., and D.A.R., Spencer, Ms.
Atherton, and Mrs. Paire visited the graves of four
War for Independence patriots, each of whom
were honored with a eulogy recited by a S.A.R.,
D.A.R, or C.A.R. member and a musket volley by
the Maryland Color Guard.
Samuel Chase, a signer of the Deceleration of independence.
Col. John Eager Howard, who is memorialized in Maryland's state song with the line, “Howard's warlike thrust.”
Private Daniel Bowley, Spencer eulogizing Bowley and the battle of Monmouth where he fought.
Lt. Griffith Evans of Harford County Flying Camp
The Naturalization Ceremony Shortly after 12:00 pm, on July 14, 2014, Spencer
Paire and several seniors from the Hungerford
Resolves Society witnessed 34 men and women
from 31 different countries become naturalized
citizens at the Federal Court house in Baltimore
Maryland. The ceremony began with Spencer
Paire's opening remarks to the applicants, which
included a poem about the symbolic significance
of the American flag. His speech was followed by
a motion, delivered by an immigration advocate to
accept the new citizens. Once the motion was
approved, family, friends and witnesses watched
the diverse group of people, who had come from
all over the world, swear allegiance to American
ideals. It was a moving experience.
Afterward, the Justice of the Court gave her
welcoming remarks before leaving. Then, one by
one, each new citizen was called by name to the
front of the court room and was presented with
their official certificate of citizenship and an
American flag.
The ceremony was concluded by Sasha Quillin,
who led the newly naturalized citizens in their first
Pledge of Allegiance as true Americans. When the
ceremony was concluded, many of the new
Americans met in the courthouse atrium for
cookies and punch and picture taking to
commemorate the occasion. The reception didn't
last very long - like most Americans, these citizens
had busy lives to return to.

Members – Barnhousers
Congratulations to the Barnhouser Family! John
and Samantha Barnhouser recently went on a
Venture Crew adventure to Deep Creek Lake
for kayaking, white water rafting, zip lining, and
other outdoor adventures. Venturing is part of
the program of the Boy Scouts of America for
both boys and girls to have fun in the outdoors.
Little sister Sarah was not idle either as she was
out enjoying her favorite past-time of horseback
riding. In addition the family just moved into a
beautiful new home in Water’s Edge Maryland,
overlooking a park and river. John will soon be
working on his Eagle Scout Project.
Seniors – Quillins
Congratulations to two of our Maryland C.A.R.
Seniors who have "Tied the Knot!"
Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Brian and Sasha
Quillin who married on April 26th in Annapolis
at the Governor Calvert house in State Circle.
Both Brian and Sasha started out as Members of
C.A.R. and aged out into the senior category
and remain active on the state Board.
Congratulations to both and their families.
The house was built in the early 1700s by
Governor Charles Calvert. It has been used as a
barracks and residence of the Mayor of
Annapolis. It has a rare feature of a hypocaust –
an ancient Roman system of underfloor heating.

Bible of the American Revolution
On January 21, 1781, Robert Aitken petitioned the Unites States Congress to authorize, and if possible
even fund, the printing of a complete Bible in the English language of the King James Version. On
September 10, 1782, Aitken received authorization from the United States Congress to commence his
American printing of the Bible in English. This is the only instance in history of the U.S. Congress
authorizing the printing of a Bible. Thus, in 1782, Robert Aitken produced the first English language
Bible printed in America. In 1783, George Washington wrote a letter commending Robert Aitken for his
Bible. The Robert Aitken Bible is known as the “Bible of the American Revolution” and it remains the
most rare and valuable of early American English Bibles.
“The United States in Congress assembled highly approve the pious and laudable undertaking of Mr.
Aitken, as subservient to the interest of religion, as well as an instance of the progress of arts in this
country, and being satisfied from the above report of his care and accuracy in the execution of the work,
they recommend this edition of the Bible to the inhabitants of the United States, and hereby authorize
him to publish this recommendation in the manner he shall think proper.”
