The Stages of Problem-Solving Notes
SYBCA – Heta Desai
The Stages of Problem-Solving
• The process of problem solving can be divided into several stages. This is done to make it easier to understand the steps in the process of problem solving.
• To become a successful problem-solver, you need to understand the stages involved and follow them in sequential order whenever you have a problem.
The graphic shows the stages of problem solving; demonstrating how each stage is connected. By methodically moving through each stage, you get closer to the goal of solving the problem.
Stage 1: Define the Problem
• Clearly state the problem
• Identify what circumstances lead to the cause of the problem.
• Write a clear definition of the problem and the barriers encountered.
Stage 2 & 3: Find Possible Solutions to the Problem
• Analyze the problem so you fully understand it and then develop ideas which will achieve your goal
• Develop several ideas to solve the problem to increase your chances of finding the best solution to the problem.
Stage 4 & 5: Choose the Best Solution to the Problem
This stage is a process of decision-making based on your comparing the possible outcomes of your alternative solutions; this is the “DO” stage
This stage involves:◦ Identifying all parts of the solution◦ Eliminating solutions that do not meet certain criteria◦ Evaluating the solutions against the desired outcomes◦ Assessing the risks associated with the “best” solution◦ Making a decision to implement the solution
Stage 6: Implement the Solution• The process of implementing the solution
occurs in 3 stages:– Planning and preparing to implement the solution
– Taking the appropriate action and monitoring the effects• The process has to be monitored to make sure the
solution is going smoothly• Any problems must be addressed quickly
– Review the success of the action.
Stage 7: Evaluate the Outcome of the Solution
Successful problem-solving involves looking at the outcome of the solution and making the necessary changes in the earlier stages if necessary in order to reach the identified goal.
