Activities at St. Paul’s: January 12-19

February 16, after worship. All members and adherents of St. Paul’s United Church are invited to attend. Board and committee reports for the inclusion in the 2019 annual report are due by January 31.

The Social Justice Committee is requesting a few items to help St. Paul’s to continue its support for refugees when they first arrive in Edmonton. Although they come from different corners of the world most are from Uganda and from the Caribbean. Life can be intensely hard for people who arrive in Canada alone and with few resources to make a refugee claim in order to save their lives.

Attending services here at St Paul's provides them with a community of support and a spiritual home where they are welcomed as friends and a place where they feel less alone. The items that the congregation donates makes a big difference to them as they get settled here and they are very grateful. Some of the most recent newcomers are setting up their first homes here in Edmonton and could use household wares, pots and pans, dishes, cutlery, linens, appliances, small furniture items, etc. Also we need individual sized juice bottles with screw top lids in which to put cooking oil.

Thank you for your generosity, it is so much appreciated.

Youth Retreat Coming in February Four United Church congregations are jointly planning a youth retreat from February 7-9, 2020. It will be held at the River Lodge Retreat near Stony Plain, Alberta. The four sponsoring congregations, Salisbury (Sherwood Park), First (Wetaskiwin), Viking and St. Paul's (Edmonton), are happy to invite interested United Church youth to join us for a retreat that will be fun, interactive and action-based. There will be team-building and ice-breaking exercise and activities. It will contain natural and outdoor elements as the mid-winter weather permits. We will explore spiritual practices, and talk about our spiritual journeys and social justice from a faith lens. This retreat will also provide an opportunity to look at the history of the United Church of Canada and prepare for spring confirmation.

The World of Gender

In Sulawesi, they recognize 5 genders: Male, Female, Calalai, Calabai, and Bissu. The Calalai and Calabai's roles and appearance are different than their sex.

The Bissu are a combination of all genders. Hijra is a third gender in India that has been around for thousands of years.

Hijras are males who take on traditional female roles and expectations, but they occupy their own territory as a third gender.

Zapotec cultures include a third gender called Muxes, which are men who choose feminine appearances.

A crucial role of muxes is to take care of their parents when they get older.

Native Americans have always recognized a third gender called “two-spirited people.” In fact, two-spirited people were revered

by at least 155 tribes across North America as healers, caregivers, nannies of orphans, and visionaries. They were truly thought to have the

spirit of both a man and a woman.

If you enjoyed my birthday cake last Sunday and would like one made for you please let me know. It was made by my Libyan friends, both engineers who are unable to return to their country. The wife, Marwa, misses cooking with her grandmother and took cake baking classes at NAIT.
