Warmsworth Cricket Club Open for Business

Well we have been open for business now for a few months and things are going great. We have had a visit from our Local MP Caroline Flint and Phil Cole who have been supporters of the project from the beginning. (See Photo with Chairman Mick Wolsey and Secretary Richard Nettleton).

We have also had our official opening; Ex Warmsworth Player, Club Patron and England Coach Tim Boon did the honours by cutting the ribbon at the event (See Photo)

By the time this is published we should be nearing completion of the next Phase, which is the full refurbishment of both Changing Rooms, The Umpires Room and the Score box.

Once again we are always on the lookout for new players both at Junior and Senior Level, so if anyone is interested please get in touch using the email below.

You can also keep up to date with things at the club on our Facebook Page Warmsworth CricketClub

Don Gorge Community Group Feb/March 2015 Update

The Group is going through challenging times at present. With ever-increasing expectations being put on community groups by the government’s Big Society idea, we seem to be experiencing a fall-off in the willingness or availability of people to become involved. We have been searching for a Treasurer for over 12 months now, as well as lacking representatives on our committee from both Sprotbrough and Warmsworth. Our chairman has expressed a desire to limit his activities, but will continue if necessary. It will be apparent from this that we need new blood.

We have been very effective so far in our activities and are well respected by those agencies which hold most power to change things in this locality, ie DMBC, Sprotbrough & Cusworth Parish Council, Warmsworth Parish Council, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, the Canal & River Trust and the Environment Agency. I believe local people also appreciate what we do. But if we are to continue to be an effective force, we really do need people willing to participate as committee members.

Our Conservation Volunteer Group which meets every other Tuesday is thriving with an average turnout at this time of year of eight out of a group of about 25 and they do sterling work in the woods and on the pathways of the Don Gorge, supervised by YWT, C&RT and DMBC. This would not be able to continue in the same way if the Group did not exist.

There is still much that we want to do. A car park is still necessary and a visitor centre would be fantastic, but we are now on our own. The Don Gorge Strategic Partnership, which we pioneered, has fallen by the wayside and its replacement, Revival, has gone the same way due to lack of funding. Fortunately, we still have strong links with individual partners, but it is now up to us to initiate projects and be proactive in their fulfilment. Hence the need for more people to join us.

You will see that our AGM on the 9 March is being advertised as an Open Meeting. Jonathan Hart-Woods of the Canal & River Trust has agreed to make a presentation about the new fish and eel pass which should be very interesting and informative, so do come along to that. But also give strong consideration to being nominated for the committee because without that there will be no co-ordinated approach to the things we wish to change and improve in the Don Gorge.

Streetlife.com, the new media outlet for public indignation and concern (look it up on the internet), proves how co-ordination is needed in achieving goals for the community. Unfortunately, although the Don Gorge Community Group might support other initiatives if requested, it can only officially take up issues concerning the Don Gorge itself; nevertheless, it would be a shame to lose such a well-established group. School News from Copley Junior School

Well Done to Jemma! Well done to Jemma, one of our Year 6 pupils, who decided to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Jemma took the initiative to raise money for this worthwhile charity in memory of her father, who received valued support from the British Heart Foundation. Jemma worked with a group of friends to prepare a powerpoint for assembly, she organised a non uniform day when children were invited to come to school dressed in something red, the British Heart Foundation mascot made a guest appearance as you can see and Jemma also organised a very popular raffle. So far, an amazing £670 has been raised. We are very proud of Jemma for deciding to raise money to help others and demonstrating great organisational abilities. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the fundraising; your support means so much to Jemma’s family at this difficult time.

Midday Supervisor Vacancy We have a vacancy for a midday supervisor, to help look after the children over the lunchtime period. If you are interested in the post, please contact the school office on 01302 856445 for further details. Art Work At Sprotbrough Library Many thanks to Miss Passant, our Art subject leader, who has put a display of Art work across school in Sprotbrough Library. We hope you will get chance to see the displays when you next visit the library. We look forward to sharing more school news next month.

Best wishes,

E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Richmond Hill Primary Academy SPELLING BEE Richmond Hill is buzzing with excitement at the moment! Our Key Stage 2 pupils are fervently taking part in the early stages of our annual Spelling Bee Competition. We are currently at the semi-final stage with a place in the South Yorkshire Finals just around the corner. This auspicious event is producing some excellent scores and just shows that Richmond Hill certainly has ‘un-bee-lievable’ talent!

For A Reliable Friendly Service Call Tim on;

Oh Christmas Tree, oh Christmas Tree... In 2012, me and two friends thought it would be lovely to have a Christmas tree in Sprotbrough village. A representative from DMBC contacted me and began to work with me on the idea. Time passed and our work all came to nothing for rea-sons I don't understand. The death of one of our small group put the idea out of my head till this year.

On one of my many journeys from Bawtry to Sprotbrough via Tickhill, I was struck once again by the gloom and darkness of Sprotbrough at the top of Boat Lane entering the village. I decided enough was enough and resurrected the idea. A chance remark by a friend about 'street life' community notice board web site, meant I could reach people almost anonymously to test the water for support. Immediately support came through with offers of time and finance and donation. After attending my first ever parish council meeting I understand a letter has been sent to DMBC asking for support.

As yet I have no reply but remain optimistic! Since then I have been inundated with offers of help ranging from the Don Gorge groups offer to dig the hole for the tree , to a local business per-son who has offered to fund the whole thing. Finding the right person or department to allow us to site a tree opposite St Mary's church on land owned by DMBC is a nightmare. And all the while time is passing. I would hope to have the tree sited and decorated by Christmas 2015 so the wheels of local government need to crack on if the target is to be met.

Other areas of the parish might also like to have a similar project and if successful with this I am hap-py to help. We have to start somewhere to lift the doom and gloom. We will never have decorations on the scale of Bawtry or Tickhill but we can put on a good show.

Any support you can offer will be invaluable . I await a reply from my local DMBC council member to my e mail asking for help through the red tape. As I said, time is marching on. Planning Christmas in January seems extreme but let's wait and see. Thanks Carol Rees Sprotbrough Resident

Orchard Infant School This half-term, the children at Orchard Infant School have been finding out about China. Chan, a Chinese dancer, talked to the children about the Chinese New Year. This year, Chinese people will celebrate their New Year on 19th February. Chan told the children that Chinese people dress up and do a Dragon Dance to scare away the evil spirits. The Lion Dance is done every New Year: it goes from house to house and is supposed to bring good luck for the New Year. Chinese people decorate their houses with red and gold because they believe that this brings then good luck and good fortune. The children had lots of fun joining in with the Chinese dancing: they learnt how to do the butterfly dance and soon mastered the art of flicking their fan open. In another dance, they had to spin a special star shaped handkerchief on their finger, then throw it in the air and catch it on the tip of the finger. They also tried a dance with long ribbons where they had to swirl and wave the ribbon – it looked easy until we tried it! After Chan's exciting visit, the children wanted to find out more! They have been writing the Chinese New Year story, finding out how to write numbers to 10 in Chinese, making Chinese lanterns and draw-ing pictures that tell the Willow Pattern Story. Some children have also written their own Chinese Dragon poems, researched facts about China on iPads, used Tangram shapes to design their own pictures and made Chinese drums. Everyone at Orchard wishes you all a very happy Chinese New Year! Happy New Year
