President’s Message

As many of you know we had issues with our parent club web site. Having hired an outside

web master and web site development company we thought we would be in good hands.

Issues arose with delays, miscommunications and errors in that system. We switched

horses, and with the recommendation from Sue Burgess, signed on with Ryan Ammons

from Ammons data solutions. Ryan has reworked the web site and has it running quite

well at this point. Ryan’s most recent communication to me was “Although there are some

very minor tweaks that require further work (which Rohit and I will be doing in the next

couple of weeks), the essfta.org WordPress site (with membership, newsletter, calendar,

and payment capabilities) has been delivered as per the contract.”

Rohit Vanaparthy is the person Ryan is referring to in his note to me. Rohit will be our webmaster and will be the person to contact when one wants to put something on the web site. His email is [email protected]. There were many folks involved early on with the web site transition and they deserve many thanks. I would like to especially thank Sue Burgess and Barb Granatir for spearheading this project, working with Ryan in getting our web site functioning and seeing things through to finally having a web site that can be a working, functioning information center for our parent club.

I have had some recent communication with Dr. Christy Peterson regarding the Tick-Borne Initiative. She is looking at scheduling a couple fall trials to attend and draw blood again. Coming up soon she will have another updated report on her findings.

Kathy Patregnani has been diligently working on the details for our annual meeting

coming up April 26, 27, 2019. The meeting will take place at the Holiday Inn Bloomington

Airport South in Bloomington MN. It is very close to the Minneapolis/St Paul airport with

shuttle service. We will have meetings scheduled throughout Friday April 26 with both field

and bench governors. Typically, the Foundation board has a meeting that Friday as well.

Saturday morning April 27 will be the general membership meeting and right after that the

Board of Governor will meet. Details of this meeting will be forthcoming.

Enjoy the balance of your summer time and look forward to the fall season with all of

the spaniel activities on the calendar.

Respectfully submitted, ~~Mark Haglin

Tracking & Scent Work Report

The Inaugural ESSFTA Scent Work Trial is rapidly approaching. Entries opened in June and we have a strong entry. We have added a second Judge to allow us more entries and flexibility for the Trial. Kathy Pierce will be judging along with Dr. Virginia Huxley. Our own Laurin Howard has designed a tee shirt to commemorate the inaugural Trial. I Hope everybody at the National gets a chance to watch some of the trial. It is very exciting to see our Springers “doing what comes naturally.”

Immortal Companions “and when he shall die, cut him out in little stars,

and he will make the face of heaven so bright,

that all the world will be in love with the night...

William Shakespeare

Dogs who are alive in memory are not dead. Many years ago, I read a novel, “The Brief History of the Dead”, by Kevin Brockmeier, about a woman who kept meeting her favorite people from history: authors, artists, even family members dead before she was born. The book held me in suspense for hundreds of pages while I felt the protagonist’s wonder and delight at spending time with people whose company she never dreamed she could know.

Late in the novel a wise character tells her that she is living in a miraculous world where ‘as long as anyone remembers a life once lived’ that life cannot be extinguished. A day has not passed since reading this book that I have not considered the idea that dogs that we have loved live on as long as we can stop and re-live our memories with them. They leap

for balls, run to us at the sounds of their suppers being made, or we could swear we feel them move over softly in the bed to sleep with their velvet muzzles on our shoulders. Beloved companions come alive again any time we stop and invite their sprits to awaken from our hearts into our mind’s eye. As long as we live in memory, those we have cherished live on with us.,

Recently, I had the privilege to interview AKC breed and obedience judge emeritus, Carol Callahan (donahanspringers.com). I did not ask her about the many champions she has bred and exhibited. Instead, I asked her to tell me how it feels to have a dog alive always in your heart.

“Cheer” (Ch Lilley's Holiday Cheer, CDX)

Callahan told me, “Having been 'owned' by Springers for nearly 60 years, we have lost a lot of our companions in that time. None of them have been easy losses but probably three dogs stand out as the most difficult.

“The first one would be “Cheer” (Ch Lilley's Holiday Cheer, CDX) whose purchase brought us into

the dog show world in a major way. She was my obedience companion and Don's show dog and hunting companion. When we made the difficult decision to let her go, it was one of the few times I remember my husband (also an AKC judge emeritus) Don crying.

Mark Twain (Ch Donahan's Mark Twain, CD)

“The second one was “Mark Twain” (Ch Donahan's Mark Twain,CD) who was our first home-bred Best in Show winner. He took us so many places and made us so many new friends in the dog show world. Like Cheer, he was a joy to live with. When his always merry tail failed to wag for several weeks, we knew that we were losing an important part of our lives.

“The third one was “Duffy” (Ch Donahan's Definitely in Style,UD, JH, NAJ, WDX) who showed us how versatile a Springer can be. He was my first dog to win a Utility Dog title and our first to earn a Junior Hunter title. Of all the dogs, I think Duffy was my 'heart dog' and his passing left a hole in my life. Because his decline in health was so sudden, I don't think we had time to prepare for losing him. I don't think we did anything special to help us grieve other than remembering him a lot.

“Duffy” (Ch Donahan's Definitely in Style,UD, JH, NAJ, WDX)

“Many years ago, one of our veterinarians gave us his theory on making the terrible decision of when is the correct time to euthanize a dog. He said, "Better a day early, than one day late."

“As we have watched our dogs age and sometimes face illness, I have used that advice as my guideline. When I became aware that a dog was no longer enjoying life, I had to ask if I was keeping them alive, so I wouldn't suffer the loss.

“None of our dogs have ever passed away without one or both of us holding them and telling them what good dogs they were. I can't imagine doing anything else. I think one of the kindest things to happen in recent years is veterinary services that offer to come to the dog's home and euthanize them there where they are comfortable and surrounded by their family.

“Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears, But laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you. I loved you so. ‘Twas heaven here with you.”
