The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation
2nd Sunday of Baonah 2015
The spirit of wisdom and revelation
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. Eph
1:17
St Cyril of Alexandria commentary on the gospel of John (Lib. 10: PG 74, 434)
After Christ had completed his mission on earth, it still remained
necessary for us to become sharers in the divine nature of the Word. We had to give up our own life and be so transformed
that we would begin to live an entirely new kind of life that
would be pleasing to God. This was something we could do only by
sharing in the Holy Spirit.
We speak wisdom
6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet
not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
1Cor 2:6
Wisdom ordained for our glory !!!
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God
ordained before the ages for our glory, 1
Cor 2:7
Rulers do not know!!
which none of the rulers of this age
knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord
of glory. 1 Cor 2:8
The misquoted verse
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear
heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man, The things which God
has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Cor 2: 9
Revealed to us
But God has revealed them to us through
His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
1 Cor 2:10
The Spirit knows !!!
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man
which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit
of God. 1 Cor 2:11
Which spirit?!!
Now we have received, not the spirit of the
world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we
might know the things that have been freely
given to us by God. 1 Cor 2:12
Who is teaching?
These things we also speak, not in words which
man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit
teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Cor 2: 13
Receivers not instructors
For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
1 Cor 2:16
conversionAnd the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Lk 5:21
And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!” Lk 5:26
St Cyril of Alexandria commentary on the gospel of John (Lib. 10: PG 74,
434)
It can easily be shown from examples both in the Old
Testament and the New that the Spirit changes those in
whom he comes to dwell; he so transforms them that they
begin to live a completely new kind of life.
