The Spirit of Kinhaven Photos by Bob Scott REUNION By Michael Bartos With close to 120 alumni, parents, and friends attend- ing, Kinhaven Music School celebrated its 60 th an- niversary July 13-15 with concerts, dancing, informal get-togethers, chamber and vocal music readings, and delicious food. Indeed, the Vermont hills were very much alive during the reunion. Attending were alums from all decades of Kinhaven’s history. Founded in 1952 by David and Dorothy Dushkin, Kinhaven started as a much smaller place— roughly 25- 30 students and an emphasis on chamber music. Younger alums at the reunion were delighted to hear stories from older al- ums about those early years-the famous tents and the ubiqui- tous lentil soup from Althea, the cook. Older alums, in turn, were happy to participate in more recent Kinhaven tradi- tions such as Saturday-night- post-concerts folk dancing. In order to participate fully, they had the opportunity to take a class and learn a few steps from the estimable Kenneth Kwo, violist and dancing master extraordinaire. There was much to admire in the way of music- making. We enjoyed a special treat as two terrific new Fall 2012 musical compositions were heard. Bruce Adolphe’s Kinhaven Fanfare was written for the senior session faculty in honor of the 60th Anniversary celebration. The Kinhaven composer in residence, Nicholas Scherzinger wrote Crossing Shadows which featured eight of our faculty in what was the world premier. The student orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor, Jeffrey Grogan, did itself proud, navigat- ing through Hindemith’s mighty Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber. Schubert’s great ‘Trout” Quintet - as performed by the faculty - received a splendid read- ing as did other chamber music pieces. It was special to have Jerry lead a madrigal get-together and conduct a chorus of students and alums in a performance of excerpts from Vivaldi’s Gloria. Kinhaven is a remarkable place! It is at Kinhaven that students interested in developing their musical skills will find a place where they receive the best training they can hope for in a loving and nurturing atmosphere that helps them also develop as human beings. Some years ago, a parent wrote, “… my child was at his best at Kinhaven.” From the early days with David and Dorothy Dushkin to the present, that’s what Kin- haven accomplishes - bringing out the best in every- one.

Report: Senior Session 2012by Deborah Buck

Director of Senior SessionJunior Session 2012 began much the same way as sum-mer 2011 ended, in a deluge. One parent related to us a Japanese belief that such a downpour is a good omen for beginnings: it firms the ground, creating a solid founda-tion upon which to build. True to his prediction, we had a wonderful two weeks!

Musical highlights of 2012 included Beethoven’s “Over-ture to Coriolan” and Mendelssohn’s “Overture to Ruy Blas”, as well as numerous spirited chamber music pieces and performances by the Wind Ensemble, Brass Choir, and String Orchestra.

Continuing traditions is an important aspect of Junior Session and 2012 was no exception, with folk dancing, butterscotch brownies, walks to Weston, tie-dying, Kin-Olympics, Echo Lake, Open House, and a creek walk. We may, perhaps, have even added a new tradition of our own, with this being the second year running of a dining hall flash mob. Last year it was “The Star Spangled Banner”, this year, “Since First I Saw Your Face” on kazoos!Once again we were fortunate to tap into the wisdom of

Junior Session’s founding director, Nancy Bidlack, who generously donated her time and expertise in coaching a few lucky groups .By extending our live audition sites northward to Burl-ington, VT, we were able to include some very talented students from the Green Mountain state. We were also happy to have Laura Markowitz of Burlington, previously Senior Session violin faculty, return to Weston for her first time at Junior Session. We are very, very grateful to the fabulous Junior Session staff, who return year after year, and who, together with a full complement of enthusiastic and energetic students cre-ated another Kinhaven tradition- one of the best summers ever!

Hello Friends! Having completed our second senior session summer, I would like to express just how much we deeply loved and enjoyed our work with all that were with us. The summer was packed full of amazing moments; we experienced everything from stunning master classes to tire-bowling down the sitting hill (surely an addition to the Kin-Olympics this coming summer), and an incredible Regatta race down our spectacularly sparkling pond. What an honor to have led a fabulous team of faculty and staff through a successful (and at times challenging) six weeks!

Tony and I had so much fun getting to know each and every one of the ninety-four students. While the faculty and staff listened to the final weekend concerts, we shared looks of gratification that said, “wow—listen to that growth!” It is with all of these wonderful feelings that we work hard during the year to make the coming summer 2013 even better. Kinhaven enjoyed five outstanding conductors during our six weeks. We began with Simon Lipskar and followed with Jeffrey Domoto, Jeffrey Grogan, Jerry Bidlack, and finished the last two weeks with Timothy Weiss. From Brahms’ Tragic Overture to Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, our students were inspired and challenged by these gracious and dedicated guests. We scheduled four master-classes that included enormously entertaining cellist, Norman Fischer, who brought us to laughter many times! Violinist and alum, Jesse Mills, came back to our campus after twenty years only to report that, “nothing has changed!”. The master pianist/professor, Peter Frankl brought the old-school tradition to our students and performed a solo work for us by Robert Schumann. Trumpeter, Donald Batchelder hosted a series of great classes for our brass and wind students on breathing and performance anxiety.Inside our aging yet beloved concert hall, together we sat and listened, laughed and learned together. We cannot wait for next summer!

The thing that truly solidified my decision to try to go profes-sional was the summer I spent at the Kinhaven Mu sic School in Weston.

It was the best six weeks of my life. I grew my definitive love for Brahms chamber music and never looked back.

Dear Kinfolk, Our pianos have served us honorablyfor many years. However, they are becoming elderly and some are beyond repair. Over the next few years we would like to replace a number of the old pianos. Please, if you have a fine instrument that you would be happy to offer Kinhaven as a tax-deductible gift, we in turn will be happy to cover costs of moving.

For further information, please contact Michael Bartos, Chair of our Piano Committee, at 212 570-0963 or [email protected].

Dear Kinhaven community,

This fall, I took a tour through the Kinhaven campus and was pleasantly surprised to see in one of our new cabins this message from an anonymous student, intended perhaps to provide helpful guidance to future Kinhavenites: “I love Kinhaven. It’s pretty much the best place on Earth! Cherish your time here! Your memories will live on forever! 2012.” Those words sound just about right to me, and if you are taking the time to read this “Spirit of Kinhaven” newsletter, I imagine those words sound just about right to you, too.Unfortunately, for many, due to financial circumstances, the prospect of attending Kinhaven Music School may seem impossible. However, there are ways students can help themselves. Through our faculty and directors, I have heard the inspiring stories of two different students who this year, through Facebook and local arts education groups, raised their own funds for tuition so that they too could attend “pretty much the best place on Earth.” If that doesn’t epitomize the Kinhaven spirit, I don’t know what would. By the way, if you haven’t visited us on Facebook recently, please stop by. It’s a great way to keep in touch with alumni and us, and perhaps to meet future students. And if you’d like to help next year’s crop of young musicians fund the cost of tuition, please know that your contributions to our Annual Fund are a tax-deductible way to do so. It was a pleasure to see many of you at the 60th Anniversary celebration this summer. Please help our scholarship efforts for 2013 to be as successful as they were in 2012! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your continued sup-port of Kinhaven.

Letter from the President, Board of Trustees

James Wallick

It is with wonderful appreciation that we are able to report the donation of a beautiful 1929 New York Steinway Piano, Model L by Anne Sherr of

Westfield, NJ. Kinhaven came to know of this piano through Marija Stroke and Bruce Adolphe. Within a matter of what seemed like just hours, we managed to view the piano while alum and piano technician, Peter Favant took it apart for examination. The piano checked out to be in very good health and so off it went to Vermont to be placed in the living room nook of the Main House. Jay Popailo saw to the successful delivery on October 24th. We are so thankful for this extraordinary gift! All of our faculty pianists and students will enjoy the use of this fine instrument.
