Edition 11 Term Four| 17 November 2017
From the Principal’s Desk
Welcome to the half way mark in the final term for 2017. Year
12 students have now almost completed their ATAR WACE
exams, with just one paper remaining and Year 11 students
have completed their examinations for second semester; no
doubt very relieved to have this period finished. Good luck to all
candidates on earning the results you deserve from your hard
work. A special thanks to our parents who volunteer their time
to invigilate exams – Toni Cook, Katrina Evans, Zanne Kruger
and Ronel Stadler. Their generosity with their time ensures that
our teachers can concentrate on marking their papers.
Last week we very much enjoyed hosting the 2018 Year 7
cohort in an action packed day led by our teachers and current
student house leaders. The depth of our pastoral care system in
the College was evident throughout the day as many older
students volunteered their time to lead activities and work
directly with the incoming Year 7 students. Students were given
an overview of the College and house system, spent time
getting to know each other and enjoyed the rotational class
offerings in several areas. Thank you to Mr McDonald for
coordinating the day and the many staff who assisted in either
running sessions or working with students.
Last week all students had the opportunity to participate in
sessions with Paul Litherland focussing on how to ensure our
safety online. I attended both student and parent sessions and
can safely say that much was learned for our participants. The
sessions were funded by the Karratha Education Initiative as
part of their ongoing support to excellent all round education in
the city of Karratha.
Thank you to our many volunteers from FOSL, including staff
and students, who made the Christmas Markets possible two
weeks ago. This is the major fundraiser for our FOSL committee
and it was wonderful to see our gym so alive with so many
Christmas shoppers. Our FOSL volunteers work very hard to
ensure that they have enjoyable fundraisers, which, in turn,
benefit our students as FOSL spend their money on student
resources.

The Spirit Newsletter
As our College Board and FOSL have now held their final meetings for the year, I can announce that we
will be seeking parents interested in assisting the College development through involvement in either
the Board or FOSL. There are 3 positions on the College Board available and also 2 positions on the
FOSL Executive – both President and Secretary. If you are interested in nominating for any of these
positions, please complete the form at the following link and return to the College. Please be advised, if
you are nominating another person, they must also sign the nomination form. Details further in this
newsletter.
This week I wrote to all families outlining the results from our recent Technology survey and the
College’s move to a BYO device. Please use the information contained in the letter to inform your
decision of what technology is appropriate for your student. If you have any queries, please feel free to
contact me at the College to discuss.
I am delighted to announce that Mrs Estelle Hill will be re-joining our College community in 2018! As
many of you would know, Mrs Hill taught Mathematics here for several years and is held in very high
regard by our students, staff and parents. We are really looking forward to welcoming her back to
St Luke’s College, along with her family.
Lastly, I must say farewell to Father Brian Ahearn, who leaves us this weekend after spending the last
14 months in our Parish. We wish him well for his return to Dongara and thank him for his faithful
stewardship in the time he has been in Karratha. God bless, Father Brian and may the blessings of Our
Lady always be with you.
Wishing all families a lovely weekend.
God bless,
Mrs Alanna Otway
Principal
Deputy Principal’s Address
Welcome to the midpoint of Term 4!
SEQTA
A reminder that SEQTA Engage (for parents) and SEQTA Learn (for students) have been recently
activated and I trust that parents and students alike are enjoying the ease at which information is
shared. If you experience any log on issues, please contact the Front Office - they will be able to assist
you. The semester two reports will be released towards the end of the term, so please check your
account to access.
Year 10 Subject Selection
I have been working with the Year 10 students this term in order to arrange their subject selection for
their final two years at school. It’s involved some big decision making for our students, but I have been
pleased with the questions asked by the students and the mature way they have handled the
challenges.
Parents will receive a letter shortly confirming their child’s subject choices. Please sign this and return it
to the Front Office as confirmation.
Year 10 Transition Program/ Work Placements
As a way of preparing students for the changes that lay ahead, there will be a two-week period at the
very end of the term (week 8 and 9) whereby students following an ATAR pathway will attend classes
based on their ATAR pathway. During this time, students will be ‘introduced’ to the ATAR course; they
will also be expected to complete an assessment during this period.
In preparation for next year, I would recommend that students purchase the set texts as advised on the
Booklist. It would be hugely beneficial to speak with subject teachers in order to plan activities/reading/
preparation over the Christmas period. Students who complete some pre-preparation over the holiday
period are going to feel more comfortable and more prepared in Year 11 next year.
Students undertaking a General pathway (with a Certificate course) next year, will be attending pre-
arranged work placements. Students have been liaising with Mrs Potter (VET Coordinator) in order to
arrange these placements - if they are not in place yet, please advise your child to see Mrs Potter as
soon as possible.
God bless,
Miss Melanie Caddick,
Deputy Principal (Year 8, 10 & 12)
Deputy Principal’s Address
Many thanks to the North West Shelf Project: Karratha Education Initiative, who enabled St Luke’s
College to have the expertise of Paul Litherland, Surf Online Safe, at our College on the 6th and 7th
November, Week 5. Not only did Paul deliver to our students on a critical issue, but he spoke in a way
that encouraged our students to think very carefully about their online identities and how easy it is to
accidently give out information to the wrong people. Thank you also to those parents who supported
the parent online seminar last Monday night with Paul, I think we were all rather surprised at how
much our children are exposed online. We also learnt some great strategies to protect our families.
The overwhelming majority of our students wear our uniform appropriately and with pride. I have
noticed, however, that a number of students are disregarding our uniform code. As parents/guardians
please support the College in reinforcing these requirements. Our uniform serves as a powerful symbol
of identification. A uniform code also prepares students for the world of work where uniform codes are
in place in almost all industries and professions.
Week 7 sees the commencement of Year 9 and 10 Exams. Please see the attachments at the end of
this newsletter for Exam Timetable and Rules of Examinations. Please remember that if your child is
unable to attend these exams they will require a Medical Certificate or prior approval from the principal
if due to other circumstances.
I wish to extend my thanks and congratulations to the Year 11 students who finish their year on Friday,
17th November. It has been a pleasure working with you all this year, you have made me feel valued
and welcomed to the College. Have a restful holiday and I look forward to working with you all in 2018
as St Luke’s College graduates. As a cohort we wish Kimberley Cruz and Amreen (June) Jahan all the
best on their respective moves to Perth and South Australia. It has been a pleasure getting to know
you and I wish you all the best for your bright futures.
Thank you to all those parents and students who helped
out at the FOSL Christmas Markets. It was wonderful to feel
the community spirit on display on the days leading up to
the event and the day of the event as well.
God bless,
Miss Sharon Cusack Deputy Principal (Year 7, 9 & 11)
Religious Education
Blessings All,
Well here we are over halfway through the last term of 2017. Students will be busy with assessments
in class and upcoming tests as the term quickly finishes.
Extraordinary Ministers
Last Wednesday 8th November six of our Year 10 and 11 students attended St Paul’s Parish Church
where they undertook training to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Congratulations
to Christine Zaccheus, Sharni and Bella Strong, Michaela Flores and Victoria and Elizabeth Phillips.
They have completed the necessary training and will now be able to assist the Priest in administering
the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
Salvation Christmas Hamper Appeal
St Luke’s College is once again participating in contributing food items to The Salvation Christmas
Hamper Appeal which will be delivered to families needing assistance at Christmas time here in
Karratha and surrounding towns. All students have been asked to donate something towards the
Christmas Hamper Appeal. Any donations can be sent to school and your child/children can give it to
their PCG teacher. All donations are appreciated and we look forward to supporting this very worthy
cause.
Year 10 Retreat
On Thursday the 2nd of October the Year Ten students attended their annual retreat.
The students, accompanied by Ms Cusack, Mrs Gupta and myself, spent the day at the Dampier
Pavilion, with the day beginning with Mass at St Peter’s Church in Dampier. The retreat was a day of
reflection about themselves, their relationships with others and sparking in them the need to foster
justice in society.
Ms Cusack organised the first activity. She shared her love of music and the way music expresses her
life experiences. She came with her playlist of personally significant songs and then asked students to
think about the music that has touched them or personally significant
and then they created their own playlist.
I read the “warm fuzzy” story and ran an activity where the students
watched snippets of the SBS documentary “First Contact”. The
documentary covers the social justice issues associated with the rights
of Indigenous people. Whilst viewing the documentary students
discussed topics and concerns that arose.
The retreat was supported by Mrs Guthrie, who provided the delicious
fresh rolls for lunch, Ms Cusack and Mrs Gupta who made sure that all
the morning tea and lunch was ready for the hungry hordes. I would
like to acknowledge the valuable support, help and enthusiasm by the
students and Mrs Guthrie, Mrs Gupta and Ms Cusack.
God bless,
Mrs Rhondda Tittums

Year 10 Lightning Carnival
On Friday, the 10th November, all the Year 10 students participated in a lightning carnival at the
Leisureplex against Karratha High School and Tom Price High School. Students had to choose to
participate in Boys Basketball, Mixed Futsal or Mixed Volleyball. Volleyball was the popular sport and we
had two mixed teams entered into the Carnival.
The mixed futsal team gave a very good account of themselves on the court and
although they were run off their feet they had a lot of fun. Under the guidance
of Genesis Duarte-Almeida the team bonded and displayed great sportsmanship.
The boys basketball team was very competitive under the great captaincy of
Reuben McCawley and won all their games in the round robin very convincingly.
They came up against Karratha Senior High School in the finals and it was a
resounding victory to St Luke’s College boys who took out the winning shield.
The volleyball teams were enthusiastic, despite playing in the sun and on the
beach sand. The players gave their best and had good competition from the
other teams. They learnt new skills and were able to communicate effectively
with each other and display good sportsmanship. Mitchell
Greensill was voted MVP of the tournament.
A fun and competitive day was had by all the Year 10 students.
Congratulations to all students for outstanding performances in
all the sports played.
Many thanks to Mr Pedlar, Mr Sharpe and Miss Tipa for
accompanying the students and helping coach and manage the
teams.

Outdoor Education
As part of the 2017 Outdoor Education Program for Semester 2, Year 9 students planned and
participated in a Kayaking Excursion and Overnight Camp on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th October.
The venue this year was Dampier and included various locations in and around Hampton Harbour,
Sam’s Island and East Intercourse Island.
The aims of the Kayaking Excursion and Overnight Camp were to:
Provide students with a diverse range of outdoor educational experiences
Encourage the development of problem-solving strategies
Build resilience and coping strategies through challenging activities
Apply the “Leave no Trace” principle in the environment
During the camp’s activities the students were assessed on the following areas:
Self-awareness and excursion planning
Kayaking skills and “Leave no Trace” principles
The Kayaking Excursion and Overnight Camp proved to be a very much anticipated and enjoyable
experience which provided many challenges and opportunities to put into practice their camp-craft
survival skills. I was very impressed with the way in which students conducted themselves and the
respect shown in the active environment.

Year 7 Orientation Day
On Thursday 9th of November, current Year 6 students from Millar’s Well, Baynton West, St Paul’s,
Dampier, Wickham, Tambrey and Pegs Creek Primary schools attended the St Luke’s College Year 7
Orientation Day for students enrolled for 2018.
Anxious, nervous yet excited for the next phase in their educational journey, the students assembled in
the St Luke’s Gymnasium at 8:15am to prepare for the outline of their Orientation Day.
All students were welcomed by the Principal, Mrs Alanna Otway and then introduced to the House
Coordinators, support staff and their Year 7 Coordinator, Mr Brent McDonald.
After all the introductions, senior student leaders helped facilitate and guide the students around the
school on a mystery tour which helped to familiarise them with the school layout before being exposed
to a variety of subject areas to give them a taste of what to expect in their first year at St Luke’s
College in 2018.
The Orientation Day provides the students with an opportunity to experience College life and also
provides a welcoming, safe and supportive environment for our students to learn who they are and
encourage them to be the best that they can be. The Year 7 Orientation Day is put in place to help
ease transition and provide support networks that help our students overcome challenges in their
preparation for their first year at St Luke’s. To complement this transition, Primary School visits were
arranged to meet and greet with students enrolled at St Luke’s College prior to Year 7 Orientation Day.
As a result, all students were familiar with their expectations and were excited of the prospect of
attending their first educational event in their introduction to College life.
All students enjoyed the activities and the prospect of returning to school, next time in a school
uniform. I had been particularly impressed with the enthusiasm displayed from the students
throughout the day and their approach to planned activities and excellent behaviour had also been
noted.
Many thanks
Mr Brent McDonald
Year 7 Coordinator
Beijing Bound
Recently three students from St Luke’s competed in the Beijing Bound Science competition, sponsored
by Rio Tinto and Scitech. It involved students completing a scientific experiment in a field of their
choosing, writing a scientific report and then presenting this to an audience, including the judges.
In the process of conducting their experiments, they were given a scientist mentor from Rio Tinto to
discuss, plan and conduct their experiment with.
Experiments were conducted on electromagnetic levitation, solar distillation and electromagnetic pulse
protection and were of a high standard. The presentations were of an even higher standard and the
students are to be commended on both their work and ability to convey the knowledge they learnt
conducting the experiment, to an audience.
The student who was declared the winner of the competition, as decided by
the Scitech staff who judged them on their report and presentation, was
Jasper Otway.
Jasper will travel to Beijing next year, for a week, to an international science
symposium to present his experimental report with students from around the
globe.
Having been on this trip myself. I know it is a fantastic and inspiring
opportunity for Jasper, and I would invite all Year 9 and 10 students next
year to take the opportunity to participate and learn from the experience.
You never know, you might be traveling to Beijing in 2019 on an all expenses
paid trip.
Once again, we must thank Rio Tinto and Scitech for giving our students this opportunity.

Year 10 Two Week Transition
Our Year 10 students have selected their pathway ahead of Year 11 and 12. Both the ATAR and General
students will be attending a two-week transition from Monday 27th November - Friday 8th December.
Students following the ATAR pathway will be attending classes at school, timetables have been provided.
Students following the General pathway have been actively looking for work experience placements for
the two-week transition.
The response from local businesses around town has been very positive, businesses are very supportive
in accommodating students. Students will gain work experience in an area similar to that of their chosen
certificate course for Year 11 and 12. The work experience is certain to make some noticeable changes
to your child, with the intentions they become more: independent, responsible, communicate with others
other than their peers, time management, work with other age groups / cultures, display their maturity
and respect and have a better understanding of the general running and responsibilities within a working
environment.
I would like to wish all the students all the best during their transition, I can’t wait to hear all their
feedback next year!
Reminder: Year 11 and 12 General Students 2018
This year, Year 11 and 12 students on a General pathway have either attended a Certificate Course with
TAFE, or a School Based Traineeship (SBT) on a Monday.
This will change from 2018. Year 11 students will attend TAFE / SBT on a Thursday and Year 12
students will attend on a Wednesday. The decision to change the days is due to a number of reasons;
one being, most businesses are unable to accommodate Trainee students on Monday due to RDO days
and Monday being the quietest day of the week for students to gain the full experience of the
workplace. Another positive for changing the days is due to St Luke’s College and KSHS amalgamating
TAFE days. TAFE are able to assist with a wider range of course offerings to a small number of students.
Cultural DeCoding by The University of Notre Dame
The University of Notre Dame Australia invites the gifted and talented students who will be in Year 11
and 12 in 2018 to participate in the 2018 program of Cultural DeCoding.
The programme runs from 22-24 January 2018, from 9am until 3.30pm.
This three-day experience will help unlock the ideas that define who we are. With a mixture of art,
archaeology, history, philosophy, theology, this experience will intellectually challenge and enrich your
mind to prepare you for further study.

Rio Tinto Student Vacation Programme
Each year Rio Tinto runs a student vacation programme. The programme provides an opportunity for
local students to gain experience in the processes associated with paid employment and for Rio Tinto
to encourage students to consider an employment pathway with the company by providing an insight
into work at site.
It was great to see the response of students eager to apply for the programme, 60 students across
Years 10 – 12 submitted applications. WorkPac received a total of 130 applications from the Pilbara.
Of those 130 applications, 65 were selected, with students gaining work experience roles across
Dampier, 7 Mile and Cape Lambert.
The 2017/18 programme involves two blocks, of two week placements; Block 1 commencing on the
4th December and Block 2 on the 8th January.
Students were able to nominate to be placed in the following roles during their placement:
Service and support roles, such as Health and Safety, Administration, IT, Environmental,
Engineering and Marine
Operational roles, such as Workshop/Trades Assistance and Fixed Plant
Students will be provided with full supervision throughout their two-week placement (Monday to
Friday, 8 hours per day). Supervisors must provide direct support and mentoring on using the Rio
Tinto hazard awareness tools and ensuring their safety at all times.
Congratulations to all students who applied for the programme, WorkPac received a great response
making the opportunity more competitive than ever before. Students are encouraged to continue
submitting applications to such programmes.
Congratulations to the following students that were selected for the programme:
Madison Ninaus, Gershom Auna, Vaniya Siddiqui, Toby Wren, Marcus Jiritano, Sharni Strong, Akshat
Gupta, Zoe Oliver, Tasmin Kyle, Harry Dorning, John D’Mello, Claudia Becker, Ryan Loudon, Bella
Strong, Rebeca Gathmann-Brandt, Hayley Ladyman, Avinash Sudhakaran, Mackenzie King, Devni
Wijesinghe, Elizabeth Phillips, Isabel Oakley, Brock Wilkinson, Joshua Mahlatjie, Jorja Huntley, Kain
Janeway.

Congratulations to Alycia Buenaflor who won the Junior Sports girl award at the Karratha City Sports
Awards. Congratulations also to Abbygail Bushby who was chosen to represent WA in the under 16’s
Softball State team and is trialling for the Australian Softball team during the holidays.
Finance
This is a general reminder to all families that school fee balances should have been finalised by the
15th November 2017. Could those families who have yet to organise payment, please contact the
College urgently to make arrangements.
If you are experiencing difficulties in paying your fees, please be assured, there is always a
solution. Please contact the College to make a private and confidential appointment with the Principal

School Board Information
Involvement with the School Board is very rewarding and gives the opportunity to be closely
associated with the School – this is particularly important in a secondary school context where parents
can find it a little difficult to be a close part of the school community. Below are some details about
the operation of and requirements for nomination to the School Board together with the relevant
Nomination Forms. You are free to nominate yourself or another person; however if you nominate
another person you must obtain that person’s signature on the nomination form.
Nominations will be sought for College Board members for the College Community Annual General
Meeting, which will be held on Tuesday 13th March 2018 at 6pm.
The School Board is responsible for the overall financial management of the school in collaboration
with the Principal, including monitoring monthly expenses, input into and approving the annual
College budget and managing College fees and financial policies.
In 2018, there will be 3 positions available on the College Board.
Nominees to the Board should:
· Possess special skills or interests which will be of value to the Board.
· Have a deep interest in the welfare of all students, staff and parents.
· Desire to serve the community.
· Be keen to promote Catholic schooling.
· Be prepared to work cooperatively with other Board members.
· Have sufficient time to devote to Board duties.
The Board meets on the evening of the second Tuesday of each month at 5.30pm.
Board membership is for a period of two years.
It is strongly encouraged that all parents who are considering submitting a nomination form to please
do so. You can download a copy of the nomination form here.
