THE GOOD NEWS“PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMSGIVING” REFLECTION BY FATHER DAVE

Dear Friends,This weekend we celebrate the first Sunday of Lent. The call is out to follow Jesus into the desert in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is 40 days that we go on a retreat to get ready for Easter. I hope and pray that all of us will take advantage of the graces of this season.The traditional ways of growing in the spiritual life are three: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. There are many opportunities to grow in our PRAYER life this Lent. Check the bulletin for the additional Mass times, devotional prayers such as Stations of the Cross, Rosary, and Benediction. All are encouraged to make a visit to our Adoration Chapel which is available 24/7. Call the office if you do not know the code. The church is open for visits during the day as well.This is the year of St. Joseph. In lieu of a Lenten Mission this year, there will be a nine-day Novena beginning Thursday, March 11th through Friday, March 19th at 7:00 p.m. each night, with a speaker on St. Joseph, some devotional prayers, and Benediction. Mark your calendar now. Each night will be live-streamed and social-distanced in-person.Another opportunity to grow in our PRAYER life is to use the book we gave you last weekend Do Something Beautiful for God, Daily Quotes of Mother Teresa. I hope you enjoy it.Our Lenten opportunity for ALMSGIVING is knocking at the door this weekend - our Annual Catholic Charities Appeal. Catholic Charities serves more than 400,000 people each year through 150 services and 60 locations in the eight counties of our Diocese. Especially during this pandemic, your help for the vulnerable and needy is most appreciated.As always, this year we will participate in Operation Rice Bowl. Your donations go toward Catholic Relief Services which are helping throughout the world in the most desperate of cases.There are many opportunities for FASTING here at Queen of Heaven – no doughnut socials, no desserts served at the Fish Fry Dinners, because there are no Fish Fry Dinners this year. FASTING opportunities at home include less time spent looking at television and other electronic devices, giving up chocolate, desserts, seconds at the table, and giving up gossip and negative thinking. One thing not to give up is your joy, your peace, your hope, or your sense of humor. Reminder: the Fridays of Lent are meatless; those who are 14 years to 100+ are bound by the church to not eat meat on Fridays of Lent, and those 18 to 59 are to observe the days of FASTING, with one normal meal and two lighter meals to maintain strength, and nothing in-between. FASTING days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday but try to practice it more than just those two days.Thank you to all who have volunteered and supported the Fish Fry Dinners in the past. We are looking forward to celebrating Fish Fries, Doughnut Socials, and our Fun Days with renewed vigor once this pandemic is in the rearview mirror. Look at the positive, during this year’s pandemic, we will have more time to focus on PRAYER. Notice on Fridays we will have 5:30 p.m. Mass, followed by Stations of the Cross (Stations will also be prayed after Wednesday morning Masses during Lent at 9:05 a.m.). We will also have a Novena to St. Joseph from the 11th to 19th of March. Get ready to come on down and pray.A Blessed Lent for All,Father David Durkee

LENTEN CRS RICE BOWL

Each Lent, Catholic families across the country unite to put their faith into action through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Through CRS Rice Bowl, families learn about how our sisters and brothers across the globe overcome hardships like hunger and malnutrition, and how through Lenten alms, we have the power to make the world a better place for all. Pick up your CRS Rice Bowl in the Gathering Space this weekend. Watch a video on how CRS is helping those around the world at https://www.crsricebowl.org.

ANOTHER LOOK AT ABORTION, PART 3Effects of Abortion

Abortion results in the death of a child. For many mothers, abortion causes severe and long-lasting emotional, psychological, and spiritual trauma. Many women experience overwhelming guilt, shame, and grief. Other effects have also been documented: depression, withdrawal from others, eating disorders, self-punishing behaviors like “cutting,” sexual dysfunction and problems with intimacy, alcohol and drug dependency, problems bonding with other or subsequent children, abortion-related nightmares, and other sleep problems.Family relationships may suffer as the aborted child’s father, grandparents, or other family members experience their own guilt, grief, or loss. Even if the mother keeps her abortion secret, family members can be distressed by changes in the mother’s behavior and mental or emotional health.(Source: https://www.respectlife.org/another-look-at-abortion)

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY FISH FRY DINNERS AT QUEEN OF HEAVEN

THIS YEAR DURING LENT.

FEAST DAY TIP – CHAIR OF ST. PETEROn February 22, we celebrate that Jesus appointed Peter, and all vicars to follow, leader of the Church. In gratitude, say some extra prayers for

the Holy Father’s intentions and for his protection. Pray the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and any other prayer you would like for Pope Francis. Visit feastday.co for more help celebrating the feasts and seasons.

2021 CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNUAL APPEALThe 2021 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is underway with an in-pew commitment process taking place this weekend. This is not a special collection;

rather, the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal represents the chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland in order to support its mission of a society that stands united in its support of the “least among us.” Many parishioners have received a letter from Bishop Malesic requesting their support. If you have not received this letter, please respond to the in-pew commitment process today! If you have received the mailing, please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indicate that you have responded by mail.Love Your Neighbor. Your support of the 2021 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal helps us to carry out the mission that Jesus entrusted to us: “I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Please consider a generous gift that will change the lives of the 400,000 who are served each year in Northeast Ohio. Please pray for the success of the Appeal, which provides for essential programs and services in need throughout all eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland.Double your impact! A generous donor, who believes in the mission of Catholic Charities, will match your gift, up to $1 million. Do twice as much good when you give online at CatholicCommunity.org/Match. On behalf of the poor and needy of Northeast Ohio, thank you!

DAILY NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPHO Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.O Saint Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, so that having experienced here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of fathers.O Saint Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Hold Him close in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me.Amen
