2 July 2020The Spire

The Shandon Session met May 19 by using Zoom. Here are some highlights from the meeting:• Rev. Jenny McDevitt moderated the meeting, her first

among us, and everyone welcomed her and appreciated her direction and contributions.

• Molly Spangler distributed a video to elders before the meeting in which the sponsors of this year’s confirmands introduced the confirmands and the confirmands read their faith statements. The teachers of the confirmation class — MaryAnne Massey, Richard Kennette and Clay Timbes — attended the meeting to describe the class, and the elders voted to accept each confirmand into member-ship based on the faith statements and the comments of the teachers. They will be confirmed later during a church service. These are the new members of Shandon Presby-terian Church: Spencer Bush, Lila Garfield, Alec Hamilton, Kepley Ann Mason, Ben McLean, Sam McCombs, Jacob Sawyer, Hayden Thorpe, Carter Toole, Brooks Wheeler, Tom White and Caroline Woodham.

• Robert Walker reported on improvements to our buildings and grounds made by him and sexton Gerald Taylor. They have painted several rooms, resoldered the stained-glass window braces, updated the sprinkler system, gotten the fountain in the Memorial Garden repaired, overseen the new roofing, and managed work on the organ that will prevent a recurrence of the overheating.

• He was also working on required paperwork for convert-ing the Payroll Protection Plan from a loan to a grant.

• Jenny plans to form a small group to determine guidelines for reopening the church building. The church will not be open for gatherings until Aug. 1 at the earliest, and virtual services and meetings will continue.

• Everyone expressed appreciation for the staff who are making virtual worship possible. Matt McCall, music di-

rector and organist, edits the video. Many thanks to Matt and to the ministers, who are learning technical skills not taught in seminaries.

• Jennifer Webb, chair of the Education Ministry, said virtu-al Sunday-school classes will continue into summer, but trips for the youth had been canceled. Teachers are lined up for the fall and will be honored on Rally Day.

• Frank Vail, who chairs the Finance Ministry, reported that an increase in contributions and funds from the federal Payroll Protection Plan made April a positive month for Shandon’s finances. Fundraising for the building renova-tion is on hold.

• The Session approved a revised lease for the UKirk build-ing and sent it to the Presbytery.

• Janet Hamilton reported that Caroline Maas has ended her internship with UKirk and that Tinsley Moise may be able to continue her work with the children into the fall. Tinsley will fill in while Molly is on maternity leave this summer.

• RB Williamson, chair of the Outreach Ministry, report-ed that many of our outreach programs are continuing, sometimes in altered forms.

• Deacon Andrew Folks reported that the deacons have been working with shut-ins and helping the office get email ad-dresses to improve communication. They are discussing ways to connect to members in general.

• Jenny asked for prayers for several people in the congre-gation and shared that John attended the memorial ser-vice for Dewey Bullman. Jenny visited with Tim and Nancy Hoyt Duncan the day before Tim’s death

BIRTHSBIRTHSAssociate Pastor John Cook is blessed

with a sabbatical in 2021, and Shandon is applying for a grant from Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program that will fund journeys of renewal for both John and the church.

The grant will afford the church an opportunity to pause, take a breath and embark upon a year of growing, learning, reflecting and resting as we explore pathways of renewal - specifically in mission, journey and Sabbath rest.

John’s journeys of renewal will include Sabbath rest at home interwoven with family retreats, a “family Qwest West,” and a family mission journey to Mwandi, Zambia, a mission homeplace for both John and Shandon. Bookending these journeys will be quiet, introspective retreats at Mepkin Abbey and St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center.

The church’s journeys of renewal will center around two retreats. The all-church retreat in March will introduce

the idea of Sabbath rest and renewal. The second is an in-town retreat – our June intergenerational Vacation Bible School, instilling mission as a journey of renewal. This church journey will be followed by a Sunday preaching and teaching series on disciplines of spiritual renewal in July and August.

We will celebrate all of our 2021 renewal journeys on Homecoming Sunday in October with the opening in the Atrium Gallery of “Shandon’s Journeys of Renewal,” an art show of journey photos from all across the church.

Many thanks to all church members, six church committees and the Session who have had a hand in dreaming, crafting, building and writing our Clergy Renewal Program grant proposal. We ask for your prayers as we send it off with your blessings. And let John Cook, [email protected], know if you have questions about our Journeys of Renewal in 2021.

July 2020 3The SpireArt while we’re apart: Atrium Gallery goes virtual

The Arts at Shandon Atrium Gallery Committee has teamed up to bring an exhibition to you through an online format. This idea has been developed to circumvent the COVID-19 distancing that prevents us from gathering at church. Our first exhibition is titled “Art While We Are Apart,” and the congregation – all ages – will supply the featured artists.

During these times of social distancing and school closures, many Shandonites have crafted, painted, sculpted, drawn, collaged, knitted, sewn and photographed. Now we are developing an online method to share these creative acts. Please take the best possible photo of your work, and send it to [email protected] where we will use your creativity in a gallery without walls.

All photos will be reviewed to ensure that they are appropriate for a church setting. If we have a strong response, exhibits will be up for at least two weeks and then another group of artworks will be presented.

Photographs of pieces should be submitted by July 15. We hope to have the first exhibit up by Aug. 1. For the first exhibit, each artist may submit one to two pieces. Include the artist’s full name and the title of the piece. The identity of minors must be protected. If a minor is photographed with his/her art, then we cannot display the name.

This is an experiment, and it may take a little while to iron out some rough spots, but please stick with us.

Laundry art interpretation of E. Munchen’s “The Scream” created by Shandon child.

Congratulations again to all of our Shandon seniors and thank you to everyone who came out on June 7 to celebrate our high school graduates. Thank you for your energy, your cards and your posters during our drive through. It was a wonderful day.

If you visit the church property, you will notice three hydrangea bushes have

been planted on the corner of Blossom and Woodrow. These beautiful plants are in honor of our college and high school seniors for 2020. They are a reminder of our seniors’ accomplishments, but also the love and life of a congregation that stands with them during this transition time in their lives.

Super celebration for Shandon’s graduatesCoffee with the pastor

When Rev. Jenny McDevitt was called as Shandon’s pastor, we didn’t expect our introductions to include the words virtual, distance, remote or Zoom. However, we worship and serve a God who is bigger and more creative than any of these limitations, and Shandon Presbyterian Church is, too. To get acquainted with Jenny, members may schedule a virtual coffee time with her. Go to calendly.com/jennymcdevitt/coffee to sign up online.

THANK YOUTHANK YOU

Thank you to church members Lori White, Joan Edwards and Eliza-

beth Kelbaugh who made 100 masks for Shandon Weekday School. The masks are amazing, and we are be-yond appreciative for them. Thanks for keeping us safe as we reopen SWS to families.

~ Carol Holt-Cooper

Join us for worship from home We miss you and have heard from many of you who miss our

regular gatherings for worship, discipleship and fellowship. We are all anxious to celebrate our communal faith together, but we are also committed to the physical health and safety of our church family and all of our neighbors.

We do not anticipate any broad reopening earlier than Aug. 1. Check the weekly e-newsletter, our website and Facebook page for updates.

We continue to invite you to join us for worship remotely. There are several ways to share in our streaming services. Please go to www.shandonpresbyterian.org (worship and music tab) for several ways you can share in our streaming services.

Virtual Sunday School continuesWe will continue to offer virtual Sunday school opportunities for

children and adults during the summer. Rev. John Cook will continue to lead an adult Sunday school

class at 9:15 a.m. Sundays via Zoom. Details for the Zoom call can be found at www.shandonpresbyterian.com.

We will also continue to offer Sunday School for children 5th grade and younger via Zoom. Details can be found in the Shandon Kids weekly emails.

If you have questions about Sunday School classes, please con-tact John Cook at [email protected] or Tinsley Moise at [email protected].

BRIEFLYBRIEFLYNew record-keeping system

Our church is moving to a new kind of church record-keeping solution called Realm. It primarily serves the administrative needs of our staff, but it also offers some exciting opportunities to support the way you are involved in our church. Not only will this improve work-life for our ministry staff, it will make it easier for our church family to connect with each other, keep up with what’s going on, and grow as a connected community of believers.

Order your T-shirt for Rally Day, Sept. 13 Plans are being made for Shandons’ fall schedule, and Rally

Day is planned for Sept. 13. The fall Sunday School theme is “To-gether, Gathered to God,” based on Matthew 18:20.

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.

We will be ordering T-shirts for Rally Day with the above design on the back and Shandon’s logo on the front. To place your order, go to bit.ly/rallydaytshirt by Aug. 1.

Collecting garden treasuresThe Richland County Master

Gardeners would like to hear from you if you have garden items you are ready to part with. We need pots, tools, garden art items, etc. Please call Joan Edwards, 803-331-2018 if you have anything to share or would like to arrange pickup.

IN THE COMMUNITYIN THE COMMUNITYChildren’s Hymn Club

Children ages 5K through fifth grade are invited to join Hymn Club during July where they will memorize hymns and share and “sing truth together” each week.

All children are welcome to join the friendly memory competition or to simply log in for musical instruction and prayer with us as we continue to connect to God and each other with music.

For more information, contact Sally Tackett [email protected].

OUTREACHContinued from page 1

Watching too much Netflix? It may be time to focus your energy on new ways to volunteer in the community. The Health and Hunger Committee understands that some regular volunteers are not able to serve in places such as Transitions or the Soup Cellars because of health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the United Way has many volunteer opportunities (some virtual) that you or your family members may be interested in. For example:

• Able SC (an organization that focuses on persons with physical limitations) needs help with grocery and supply deliveries to clients. They also need a virtual office assistant.

• Junior Achievement needs virtual vol-unteers to record lessons for students interested in business (guidance and

worksheets provided) or to present to a virtual classroom.

• The S.C. Department of Education needs help with school meal prepara-tion and distribution.

• Skip to My Lupus needs an office as-sistant in their office (Elgin area), par-ticularly someone with Excel skills.

To check out these opportunities, and find more, go to www.uway.org/vol-unteer. Our community still needs us in multiple ways.
