“Being Christian in an Election Year” leadership breakfast is Saturday,

Oct. 6, with Dr. Allen HiltonDuring an election season, tensions rise in a family, neighborhood,

church, city, and nation. We all need strategies that bring us together across our differences. Join us on Oct. 6 at 9:00 AM for a

congregational breakfast, where Dr. Allen Hilton will deliver a message on finding unity during the election and how to make our differences

an asset rather than a threat. Hilton is the Executive Director of House United, a non-profit initiative he has built to bring people together

across political and theological difference. A special session with the elders and board will follow the breakfast at 11:00 AM.

RSVP for the breakfast at woodmontchristian.org

We have officially kicked off our fall Capital Campaign “Building for Our Future.” It is based on 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 where Paul writes: “According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder, I laid a foundation and somebody else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid and that

foundation is Jesus Christ.” Many will ask, “Why do we need a capital campaign?” It’s always a fair question. There are a few straightforward answers in regards to this campaign: 1) This is the result of multiple years of visioning and strategic planning as our church has grown and welcomed many new people. We also have significant momentum from lead donors and long-time members. 2) Our children’s area is overcrowded on Sunday mornings, and our class ratios are out of proportion (children in the classrooms). We need to enlarge the Kid’s Commons area to accommodate and continue our growth for the future. 3) We hope to build a multi-use chapel, which will seat roughly 200 people. It will house the Bridge, smaller weddings, funerals, speakers, and special events. Also important, it will free up our gymnasium for programming. 4) We plan to do some much-needed renovations to South Hall, which is our mission and outreach building. This includes plans to build a “missional café” that will serve this community. Our goal is to do this without taking on long-term debt for the church. The campaign will run throughout October and commitment Sunday will be on Nov. 4th.

House GatheringsIn the coming weeks, there will be a number of small gatherings that will be hosted by certain Woodmont members. At these gatherings, complete information packets will be passed out, renderings of the proposed construction will be presented, and questions will be answered. I encourage you to attend one of these gatherings for two reasons: First, you can learn more about what exactly is being proposed. Second, you can connect with other Woodmonters and make some new friends. Here are the names and dates of individuals hosting gatherings at their homes. I am very grateful to each of these families for hosting!

First, I want to say that I love you all. Your prayers, your concern, your caring and thoughtful notes, and your unwavering support for me and Chip have been tremendous during this most difficult time.

Everyone has been asking what they can do to help. It was only after spending time with a friend today who asked me the same question that the answer hit me so clearly. It was a message from God, and He asked that I share it with you.

The most helpful thing you can do for us, and to honor our precious Pearse, is to share God’s love with everyone you know. Become a better listener, a more intuitive friend; a more patient mother, father, partner, sibling, or co-worker. Stop when feeling frustrated and thank God for your joys. Take a moment to spread God’s hope to others ... every single day.

Love more and more often and open up when you feel like shutting down. Share your hurts with those close to you and allow them to carry you when you feel too broken to move. Always embrace the opportunity to help someone, even if it’s someone you do not know.

In the short time since we lost our son, we have been exposed to all of these deeply challenging yet beautiful life lessons. Loss will always be a part of us but so will living.

Thank you again for your numerous prayers and unconditional support. Your love for us as a church community has renewed our hope and continues to shower us with blessings every day. We are truly humbled and inspired by you all.

In Christ’s Love,

Welcome Back! I am excited to begin a new school year and return to Bread and Honey.

I experienced some wonderful little God “nudges” this summer; holy pokes at my spirit, my interior view, beckoning me in a new direction in mind and spirit. Another blessed birthday came and went. My husband and children traveled with me metaphorically and geographically, even occasionally beyond my comfort zone. After years of babies and more babies, I am stretching my wings again. Hallelujah! New adventures are on the horizon. Mother Nature, as always, inspired reflection and gratitude. Time spent walking in pine forests, laying a line on the river, and walking barefoot in my kitchen brought new clarity and smoothed some edges. Relationships dear to me, long-strained, showed signs of healing. New people walked into my life, with new perspectives. There were goodbyes, too — tearful but loving. Dr. Elam’s passing, a mentor and friend, left a beautiful legacy and reinvigorated my determination to follow his example of giving hope whenever I can. After some painful bee stings, I harvested my first batch of honey. A huge personal feat. A dear friend, battling a tough cancer, continues to teach me much about personal courage. The summer closed at a prayer vigil with my son Charlie. His close friend’s mother died in a tragic car accident reminding me of how precious each day I live and get to love really is.

Many times over the summer I asked myself the question, “Are you living the life you want to live?” The honest answer: Sometimes. Certainly not enough.

I instinctually know the way I would like to live this one precious life of mine and I believe you do too. But so often our exterior lives, the reign of secular culture and social media, the heavy mantle of expectations and responsibilities as mother, wife, and professional, the never-ceasing busy busyness and multi-tasking, life’s inevitable setbacks and losses, the day-to-day worries and larger existential fears conflict and rub like sandpaper against our deep soul yearnings.

F. Scott Fitzerald once wrote, “It is never too late or too early to live a life you are proud of.” The pieces of my life’s puzzle and yours begin to fall into place only when we live Soul-first and Soul-Fully.

I received a birthday card in July with a special message for me and hopefully for you: “Trust that some of the best days of your life haven’t even happened yet.” Join me on “A Year of Living Soulfully,” 52 weeks of spiritual reflections, delicious recipes, prayers and meditations, Soulful7 conversations with people I admire, and weekly tips for increasing our soul joy. The hope is that together we might live deeper, more meaningful, and soulful lives.

I invite you to regularly stop by Bread and Honey’s new and improved website at www.breadandhoneyblog.net and make sure you are signed up for a weekly soul-filling love drop into your inbox. Together with Circa Design, we have created a remarkable sanctuary of content, inspiration, and encouragement all focused on A Year of Living Soulfully! Look for your first spiritual reflection, “7 Clues to Living Soulfully” next Monday. Each week I will also gift you with a “Tip for Soul Joy.”

Big news: Bread and Honey and I are organizing our first trip together to Lourdes, France, a place very meaningful to my family and me. Lourdes is a place of deep spirituality, holiness, and all levels of healing. The itinerary is concentrated in Lourdes, but will cover other sacred spots and of course, Paris! Please email [email protected] if you are interested in traveling this year with Bread and Honey!

Another new avenue to share is the introduction of my first “Pop-up Bistro” this October. Proceeds from this dinner will be given to the orphanage in Haiti where Ferland lived. Watch for signups on the Bread and Honey website.

Every moment counts. Time is precious. We only get one go at this. Your soul and mine are up for the adventure. Let’s live Soul-First and Soul-Fully!

Live in Hope,Farrell

Building Relationshipsby Steve LaForge

3 years ago, Susan Batson, Deb, and I were a part of the Hope Force International response team to flooding in Columbia, SC. The team sheltered at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. We made wonderful friends in Lisa and Cam Gillam as well as Linda Heyward. Two years ago, we responded to Lumberton, NC, which was flooded by Hurricane Matthew. Then, we sheltered at Godwin Heights Baptist Church and developed a wonderful relationship with Pastor Dave Hawes, his wife Vanessa, and his congregation.

Fast forward to the present day … Alan Sowell, Susan Batson, Connie Hasty, Deb, and I are now responding to Hurricane Florence. We spend the night in Columbia, SC, again – and at Mt. Horeb again! We meet Lisa and Cam, and we all go to Linda’s home for a fantastic dinner. The next day, and after many flooded-road delays, we arrive in Lumberton once again. I had called Pastor Dave while Florence was still churning at sea. After a short conversation, I said, “Dave, I was hoping…,” and the immediate answer was “Yes!” So we arrived back at Dave’s church. The first thing I see is Dave running across the parking lot to greet us just like we are brothers and sisters. And Lisa – going from a flood victim to an emotional and spiritual counselor – is now part of our team!

With each step of every journey we take in life, we meet people. What you choose to do with those is up to you. They can be acquaintances or they can be life-long friends. Everyone I have talked about here is one of my life-long friends. Just as Pastor Dave said ‘yes’ before I even finished my question, I know everyone else would too.

But that isn’t the end of the story. God planted, fertilized, and grew these relationships! Because of God’s love for us, and our hearts to help all God’s children, we are brothers and sisters who do run to greet each other when they pull in the drive. I am blessed by God’s love, God’s grace, and God’s mercy! And also by the many, many friends he has brought into my life.

Cherub Choir (3 yrs-Kindergarten) will share a couple of songs at the Offertory slot on Sunday, Oct. 21

at the 9:30 service. This choir practices on Sunday mornings with Mrs. Abby directly after the Children’s Moment when they come downstairs. So if you have been attending regularly, your child(ren) will know

the songs and would love to sing for you!

Please don’t do this!from the Shepherds Team

The Porte Cochere at the south end is for loading and unloading only, and no one should park there. We realize there are currently some parking challenges, especially on a rainy day, but parking under the Porte Cochere makes it worse for all, seeing as there is only room for two car lanes there to load/unload. Even if only one car parks there, it makes parking more difficult, and it blocks access for an emergency vehicle to get through if we have an emergency. If you have to park in the overflow lot by South Hall or the grass and don’t want to or can’t walk that far, the Shepherds Team can shuttle you to an entrance in a golf cart. Thanks!
