and a look back at a quarter century o The Event!

The precursor o tonights Opening Ceremonies was aSaturday morning keynote address. Tese early gatherings

were intimate, mostly due to the act that the expositionsel was still in its inancy and welcomed only a ew hundredmaybe a couple thousand attendees over the course o three

ays. At these early ceremonies, the main attraction was a keynoteeaker oten an industry leader who came to share experiences, sight and passion with an equally passionate but limited

    udience.

s the exposition itsel grew, so did the concept o what thepening Ceremonies should represent to what was becoming theorlds largest gathering o coee proessionals. Small assemblyoms became impractical, and the event moved rom ansembly hall to a theater-style ballroom, beginning with the 1995

h Annual Exposition in Long Beach, Cali., held at the Longeach Convention Center. By 2001, when the Exposition wasosted in Miami Beach, Fla., Te Event had grown over 8,000tendees. Danny ONeill, that years Exposition Chair, notedhis welcome address that the ocus o the exposition that year

as FUN! Yes, FUN!A combination o audience growth ande desire to host a more energetic, inspiring evening aair led to

A Lk Back at the Biggest Scial Gatherings f The Event

the Opening Ceremonies and Welcome Reception beinghosted together or the rst time on a Friday night andmore closely resembling the soiree we enjoy today.

Nine years later in 2010, the Opening Ceremonies hadmatured into a community celebration that exploredand celebrated the international contributions o ourindustry, the legacies o its most revered leaders, the artand culture o countries o origin, and the announcemento the SCAA Achievement Award winners, the premierrecognition o coee industry excellence and accomplishment.

Although this event is still considered the largest and most criticalsocial event o the exposition, we have not orgotten Mr. ONeillsdictate o un! Still an evolving gala, 2012 saw the integrationo multi-media into the Opening Ceremonies or the rst time,

when a large digital screen became the center point and videotook center stage. Attendees were encouraged to submitvideos through a Facebook contest that nished the sentenceSpecialty coee is Te top videos were developedinto a compilation video played at the very beginning othe Ceremonies and brought the SCAAs growing onlinecommunity in as content contributors or the rst time in24 years.

As we celebrate the 25 year milestone anniversary oTe Event in Boston over the next several days, attendees will notice a common theme o nostalgia

woven into many exposition programs, but none sodeeply as at the Opening Ceremonies. Tis is a timeto celebrate our collective history and to remember

all o the previous Expositions, the changes that havetaken place in the industry and, most importantly, people who supported the association and Te Eventover the years. We hope youll join SCAA (and severalthousand Event attendees) tonight at 5:30 p.m. inthe Boston Convention Center Ballroom, or what iscertain to be a memorable and inspiring celebration!

Be sure to attend the Opening Ceremonies andWelcome reception this evening, and mix and minglewith your colleagues from around the globe.

However, i you look closer, youll see thatlabel is created, run and promoted by Fair Trade producers themselvThat makes things dierent! This time its the producers oering theirproducts and values to the market and its the producers who ask buyto ulll criteria or their own commitment with these values. SCAA #221

SCAA is adding a Coee aster Certicate Program (CC) to itsinternationally recognized proessional development curriculum ocially launching this week at SCAAs Event.

Te Coee aster Certicate Program provides comprehensiveeducation and training that encapsulates the entire scope o

sensory analysis, including green coee, production roast tastingand espresso tasting.

Te program is designed to not only complement Coee QualityInstitutes (CQI) Q Coee System which licenses Q Graders to grade

green coee and signies an independent conrmation o specialty qualitycoee but also to allow or an expanded understanding and level o expertise or all

coee proessionals ocused on product quality and tasting assurance.David Roche, CQIs executive director, says, CQIs international Q Graders help coeesectors locate specialty coees at origin and improve coees that have the potential

to meet specialty standards. Te eect is a common language betweenbuyers and sellers that draws attention to specialty coees while creatingan inrastructure that provides producers greater opportunities to enter tmarketplace and to increase their economic viability. SCAAs new CCprogram complements our objective to provide comprehensive proessiodevelopment or coee proessionals.

Many current SCAA students already inside o the SCAA certicate curriculum, includthose who have achieved licensed Q grader s tatus through CQI, will discover that theymay have already completed many o the required courses towards achieving this newcerticate.
