The Sparton: The Sparton is the official publication of the

Hangtown A’s Chapter of the Model A Ford Club of Amer-

ica. The Sparton is published once a month and is mailed

to each member in good standing and other Model A Ford

Clubs in exchange for their publications. The Sparton takes

no responsibility for the accuracy of materials, dates,

places, etc. of its contents. Permission to reproduce items

in The Sparton is hereby granted provided credit is given to

of the month.

Steering Column Happy New Year! I hope that your holidays were

filled with warm family memories, good food and fun.

I’m excited about this opportunity to be your Club

President and I look forward to a great year of activities. The

20s’s are back! Let’s get out those beautiful cars and make

them ROAR (or at least ahoooga). Chuck Forbes is starting

monthly lunch tours – the first will be on January

15. (Thanks, Chuck!). Steve Johnson is also planning a tour

on January 26. It's great to live in a state that allows us to tour

in winter! If you have any ideas for tours, contact our new

Vice President, Steve Johnson. It’s not hard to lead a tour,

and you can count on Steve and/or any board member to offer

guidance if needed.

I’d like to hear your ideas on how we can make this

club even more fun and interesting and supportive of the

hobby. Please feel free to email me at [email protected],

or call my cell phone 916-425-0915. I've already had a request

for more info on MAFCA activities, so we plan to include

regular updates at our monthly meetings.

I’d also like to encourage your participation in club

activities. The more you get involved, the more fun you’ll

have. We currently need volunteers for the following posi-

tions. If you have questions or interest in these activities,

please contact me or any board member.

- Sunshine Person

- Christmas/Holiday Party Coordinator

Warmest regards, Terry

Happy New Year from the Model A

Ford Foundation!

2020 will be a memorable year for the

Model A Museum as we celebrate our 10 year

anniversary. Our Museum has undergone

many changes during its existence and all of

them for the better. This is due to the contin-

ued enthusiasm for the Model A hobby and

most of all, your continued support to keep us

up and running. We are also fortunate to be a

part of the Gilmore Museum Complex.

If you are making your plans for this

coming year, please consider a trip to the

Model A Museum for Model A Day, Septem-

ber 19, 2020. Our theme will be “First Re-

sponders of the Model A Era!” We are excited

about our theme and are currently searching for

service vehicles that fit our theme to be on dis-

play such as fire trucks, police cars, ambu-

lances, and more. If you know of one or have

one that you would like to showcase, please

contact us.

Please renew your membership to

MAFFI if you haven’t already done it. It so

easy now on our website, www.maffi.org.

Thank you for your continued support

of MAFFI through your membership and dona-

tions.

WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?

What, for example, is that thing pictured to the left?. And why would a Mario Brother braze a plumbing part onto a spark plug? Well, THAT is a Primer Spark Plug. Those were once made by every major spark plug company and you could buy one for any car. Why would you want a faucet attached to your spark plug? Early gasoline formulations had a problem with volatility, especially at low temperatures. That made start-ing difficult on a cold day. The Primer Spark Plug permitted you to prime your car engine prior to starting it. You would open those faucets on each of the spark plugs and, using a small funnel, pour gasoline or, better yet ,a more volatile liquid like ether, into each cylinder. You could easily buy the ether in small screw top tins at any pharmacy. After closing the valves on the spark plugs you could start the car using that primer fluid. But why not simply pour gasoline into the carburetor?

Stay Tuned.

“The funnies occupy four pages of the paper and editorials two columns, "noted Will

Rogers. “That proves that merit will tell.”

The news that’s not fit to print is what makes the newspapers.

WHAT TYPE OF TRACKS? Two lawyers were out hunting when they came upon a couple of tracks. After close examination, the first lawyer declared them to be deer tracks. The second lawyer disagreed, insisting they must be elk tracks. They were still arguing when the train hit them.

LAWYER’S PERSONAL INJURY

A golfer hooked his tee shot over a hill and onto the next fairway. Walking toward his ball, he saw a man

lying on the ground, groaning with pain.

"I'm an attorney," the wincing man said, "and this is going to cost you $5000."

"I'm sorry, I'm really sorry," the concerned golfer replied. "But I did yell 'fore'."

"I'll take it," the attorney said.

YOU WON’T GO TO JAIL

A man who had been caught embezzling millions from his employer went to a lawyer seeking defense.

He didn’t want to go to jail. But his lawyer told him, "Don’t worry. You’ll never have to go to jail with all that

money.” And the lawyer was right.

When the man was sent to prison, he didn’t have a dime.
