During parent conferences you will be able to sit down with each of your child’s teachers to discuss your child’s progress. Details regarding parent conferences are included in this newsletter. On Friday, December 20 th our students will participate in CASCADE’S DAY AWAY. Students will get to enjoy a day of learning off campus and explore the different exhibits the Pacific Science Center is currently showcasing. More information on their exhibits can be found at http://www.pacificsciencecenter.org/Exhibits/ . A letter will be coming home the week of November 4 th with more details and information on how you can assist us with chaperoning. If you haven’t done so, please take the time to order CASCADE PRIDE GEAR online. We are excited to provide this new service and want to see all our students decked out in their PRIDE gear. Here is the website to order your gear: http://gramsgiftcloset.com I am currently working on a Friday newsletter from the Principal that will provide you with important details regarding events taking place at Cascade as well as the great teaching and learning taking place at Cascade. I am hoping to get this up and running by Friday, November 8 th . Please make sure we have your email address so that you can receive this weekly newsletter via email. To our parents and guardians, I want to say thank you for your support. I ask for your continued support as we pursue “Spartan Excellence: Everyone, Everyday, Everywhere.” We are committed to providing a quality education for your child and want to work together with you to make this happen. PRIDE! Mr. Johnson FALL CONFERENCES The Cascade staff would like to invite you to parent conferences November 20 th and 21st. On these days, student attendance hours will be 10:45-2:15. As in previous years, buses will pick students up three hours later than normal and classes will begin at 10:45. Breakfast will not be served and lunches will be served on an adjusted schedule. Wednesday Conferences - Teachers will be available on a first come first served basis from 7:30am - 10:00am. Thursday Conferences- Teachers will be available on a first come first served basis from 7:30am - 10:00am or from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. The last morning conference will begin at 9:55am. The last evening conference will begin at 6:55pm. Friday Conferences- Designated families will be contacted by the school for a Friday conference. These will be held in a classroom. Please enter through the cafeteria entrance. The front and north parking lots (by the gym) will give you the easiest access. Upon entering, you will receive your child’s report card & a map showing where the teachers will be located at the student store. You will be able to visit with every teacher for approximately five minutes. Conferences will end promptly at 10:00am because teachers will need to prepare for school to begin. Students should not arrive before 10:15 during conferences. There will be no after school athletic events or club meetings on Thursday November 21st because teachers will be preparing for and participating in their afternoon conferences. PTSA HAPPENINGS Come join your Cascade PTSA and be a part of your child’s experience at Cascade. Let your voice be heard. Mark your calendars for the upcoming events: NOVEMBER: Actual date TBA. This month please collect clothing and textile items for the Clothes for the Cause Drive. The actual date in November will be announced soon. Items donated can be any clothing or textile item: CLOTHING any kind/any condition-stained, torn, burned, etc; SHOES any kind/any condition, single or paired; TOWELS bath, kitchen, rags; SHEETS, BLANKETS, QUILTS; CURTAINS/DRAPERY; PURSES, BELTS synthetic or leather; THROW RUGS (not carpet); STUFFED ANIMALS, PET BEDS; TABLECLOTHS AND PLACEMATS. Any questions, please contact Amy Thackeray at [email protected]. Nov. 18th – Nov. 22nd: FALL BOOK FAIR. If you are interested in volunteering for a shift at Book Fair, please contact Julie Fischer at [email protected]. Most needed shift times are daily from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during lunch times. Nov. 21st: TEACHER CONFERENCE DINNER. PTSA is looking for donations of water, desserts, and salads for the Teacher Conference Dinner. Dec. 2nd: REFLECTIONS SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE. Please note the date has been extended to Dec. 2nd from Nov. 1st for Reflection submissions. Contact Amy Thackeray at [email protected]. for more information or visit the Cascade PTSA website. Box Tops and Campbell’s Soup Labels are being collected. Please have your student drop them off in the office. To date $485.00 has been submitted, so keep them coming in. Ink/Toner Cartridges and Cell Phones are being collected. COLLEGE BOUND SCHOLARSHIP Parents of 7th or 8th graders, did you know that there is already college scholarship money for your students? If your family is receives for free or reduced price lunch, TANF benefits, or falls within certain income guidelines, your student is eligible for Washington’s College Bound Scholarship. Go to collegebound.wa.gov or see Ms. Cameron in the main office for details.

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE Builders Club and Honor Society are preparing to help families celebrate the holidays by having a holiday food drive for holiday baskets. We are accepting any of the following non-perishable items: mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy packets, sweet potatoes, canned corn, canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup, fried onions, cranberry sauce, and apple cider. Also any dessert items such as cookies, cake mixes, brownies, etc. Please help us feed families for the holidays. Contributions can be dropped off in either Mrs. Luettgen’s or Mrs. Fonda’s rooms. Cash donations will be accepted to help purchase items in need and turkeys.

VETERAN’S DAY On Friday, Nov. 8, Cascade will be having a special assembly to honor veterans. We would like to invite those who have served to be our guests at the assembly. Please plan on attending the assembly at 8:00 am if you are a veteran. Email [email protected] (Sandra Luettgen) to register your intent to attend. Also, we would like to honor all our veterans, whether they can attend or not. We have special forms to fill out for family members who have served. Please see the insert or ask your child for a form. We are creating a wall of honor for our extended Cascade community who has served our country. Book Fair Be sure to check out the Scholastic Book Fair November 18th-22nd. Book Fair will also be opened during lunches and parent teacher conferencing times.

CASCADE MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR!!

First Annual Cascade Science Night When: Thursday, January 23, 2014 Time: 6-7:30pm What: Science Activities and 8th Science Experiment Presentations 7th and 8th grade students will be participating in the science fair. We will be featuring all of the 8th grade presentations and a selection of the 7th grade presentations. Each science classroom will have an experiment you can do with your student! We’ll also have our telescope out to do some night sky watching and a raffle for prizes!

DENTAL DAY November 26th is Dental Day. If your student doesn’t have a regular dentist and you would like them to have a check-up, please pick up a permission slip in the main office.

THANKSGIVING EARLY DISMISSAL

November 27th is early release for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Cascade students will be release at 12:15.

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS Room 403 recently visited White River Valley Museum and Mary Olson Farm. On our visit to the Museum we learned about Early Settlers here in Auburn. We designed a quilt square and made butter. When we arrived at the farm, we learned to make apple cider and feed the chickens. We had to wear our rain boots because it was so muddy at the farm. Our favorite part of the day was when we scratched the horses back and he smiled really big!

CITY SAVER COUPON BOOKS The Cascade Middle School Honor Society is currently selling City Saver coupon books. All proceeds will go to funding holiday food baskets for families in need. Each book costs $20.00, and will pay for itself with one or two uses. Similar to the old “Gold C/Entertainment books”, the City Saver books are full of buy one/get one free offers, discounts for restaurants, activities, etc…and are good until December of 2014. If you are interested, you can talk with an Honor Society student or email Mrs. Dragseth at [email protected]. Sales will run until November 13, 2013. Thank you for your support!
