The Southern Colonies
The Birth of a new Nation
Pre-Settlement Before the Europeans came to America the
location of the first thirteen colonies were populated by Native American Indians.
These Natives formed into many groups in this area know as the Abenaki, Mohegan, Mohican, Narragansett, Nipmuc, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Pequot, Schaghticoke and the Wampanoag.
There currency was called wompompeag which consisted of different colored shells. This currency would be exchanged for various goods a services amongst the various tribes.
Introduction of Slave Labour
Introduction of Slave Labour
African slaves were transported to Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central & South America, starting very early in the 16th century.
With the spread of tobacco farming in the 1670's, and the diminishing number of people willing to sign-on as indentured servants in the 1680's, increasing numbers of slaves were brought in from Africa.
African slaves replaced Native American slaves, who were found to be contagious of diseases to the European settlers.
The Cost and JourneyThe Cost and Journey Slavery was an attractive proposition to
landowners in ‘America’. In 1638, the price of an African male was around $27.00. This was much cheaper in the long term for European laborers considering their pay was 70 cents a day. A slave had less value at the time than 40 days of labor by a European laborer.
Both slave transportation, and slavery itself in the U.S. were brutal institutions. It was not unknown to have a 50% mortality rate during the passage from Africa. Slaves who were too ill to survive the trip were sometimes thrown overboard to drown
VirginiaVirginia In 1624, Virginia was created as a royal colony that included the original
Jamestown settlement.
It was founded by the London Company which founded Virginia during the reign of James I (1566-1625).
Jamestown was originally founded from a desire to gain wealth and to a lesser extent to convert the natives to Christianity.
Virginia became a royal colony in 1624 when King James I revoked the charter of the bankrupt Virginia Company.
He felt threatened by the representative assembly known as the House of Burgesses.
His timely death in 1625 ended his plans of disbanding the assembly. The main people to acknowledge in this colony are: Captain John Smith,
Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan, John Rolfe, Nathaniel Bacon.

He named the land Virginia in honor of the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I
Effort to build a new colony failed due to the Spanish control of the Atlantic. There control delayed Raleigh’s attempts to re-supply the settlement until England overcame the Spanish Armada.
When they returned to Roanoke island all the settlers were gone
Only thing that was left was “CROATOAN” which is a name of an American group and a nearby Island.
