Thisisazombielarp,inspiredbytheRomero‘dead’-movies.Butgoodzombiemoviesareneveraboutzombies.Theyareanexplorationofsomethingelse,inthiscasewhatitmeanstobehuman.Overthemovieseries,wecanseethehumanssacrificingwhatitmeanstobehuman,inordertosurvive.Inawaytheyarebecominglessandlesshumanasthemoviesprogress.Atthesametime,thezombiesaregettingmoreandmorehumantraits.Inthislarpweexplorewhatitmeanstobehuman,andwhatyouarewillingtosacrifice.Atthesametimeitisastoryaboutchange,andwhathappenstostereotypeswhenasociallyrestrictivesocietynolongersetstherulesforwhoyouareandwhatyoucando.Throughbreakingstereotypesandpreconceptionsofcharacterswequestionwhoourcharactersreallyare,andwhattheyarecapableof,forgoodandforbad.
ThescenarioissetintheAmericansouth,toalargeextentbecausewehavemanypreconceptionsandstereotypesofthatarea.Youmighthavetoplayonuncomfortablethemes,suchasracism,sexismandpowerstructures.Butyouwillalsohavethechancetoconfrontandchangethosestructureswithinyourgroup.Towhatextentthishappensisdependentontheplayergroup.

Thegameisplayedontwolevels.Ononehand,thegameisaclassic‘NordicLarp’,playedinasetofconsecutivesceneswithastrongfocusoncreatingagoodexperienceand‘playingtolose’.Butinbetweenofthesescenesthegameisplayedasabettinggamewithastrongfocusonwinning.Thishappensoutofcharacter,butwhatyouarebettingisastrongpartofyourcharacter.Theideaisthatthebettingsystemwillhelpinmakingtheconflictsfeel‘real’,andtherebyuptheanteoftheroleplayingscenes.

Thegameconsistofthreeacts:preparation,play,andde-roleing.Duringthefirstacttheplayerschosecharacters,learntheplaystyleandrules,andbuildapersonalrolefromthecharacter.Duringtheplayshortscenesareplayedwitharulebasedoutcomeandgamesysteminbetweeneachscene.Duringthede-roleingthegameisdiscussedandcooleddown.

Duringthepreparationphasetheplayerschosetheirarchetypes,theygetafeelingforthearchetypeandtheydevelopthatarchetypeintoaplayablecharacter.Theyalsogettotryoutthegamesystem.

Giveeveryplayer4blankcards(about,itmaybeunequal).Sitdowninacircleandexplaintherules:
Thegameisplayedinturns. Eachturntheplayerscanbetanyamountofcards.Theydothisinsecret. Theplayerwiththemostamountofcardswins.Theplayer(s)withtheleast
amountofcardsiskickedoutofthegame.Iftheleastamountisequalamongseveral,allofthemiskickedout.
Allcardsthatarebettedarelost,givingtheplayerslesscardsforthenextround.Droptheplayedcardsonthefloor.
Thegameisplayeduntilonlyoneplayerisleft.
Thisshouldgivetheplayersa‘feel’forthesystem.Afterthesystemgiveeachplayer16cards.(intotal,thereisnobonuscardsforhavingthemleftafterthegame).Telltheplayerstokeepthecardssafe,wewillgetbacktothemlater.

Leteachplayerchoseanarchetype.Byrandomorchoice,uptoyouandtheplayers.Afterthisleteverycharactergetafeelforthearchetype.Focusonthe‘outside’onwhatisprojectedtowardsotherplayers,ratherthanontheinside(thiscomeslater).Thiscanbedoneinmanyways.Onewayistolettheplayersmovearoundtheroomastheirarchetypes,tellingthemtoactdifferentfeelings(happy,angry,sad,scaredetc.).Makesuretocoverfeelingstypicalforzombiemovies,andmakesuretohavequiterapidchangesbetweentypesoffeelings.

Foreachofthe16cardswewillwriteonethingtheircharactervalues.Thisisthemeasurementoftheirhumanity.Exactlywhatendsuponthecardsisnotimportantforthegamesystem,eachcardisstillworththesame,butthiswillgivepersonalvaluetothemfortheplayers.Thiscanbedoneinmanyways,thisisoneway:
Astheplayersarestillmovingaroundtheroom,askthemtobringforththeircardsandapen.Tellthemtokeepmovingaroundtheroomastheircharacters.
Tellthemwearegoingtofocuson‘theinside’,onturningthearchetypeintoacharacter.Tellthemtokeepmovingastheirarchetype,toprojecttheimagetheyhavebeenwritteninto,buttostartthinkingoftheiryoungyears.Onwhentheygrewup.Wherewerethey,whowerethere,theclosestfamily,oralsootherrelatives?Givethemtime.
1. Askthemtotakeonecardandwriteoneoftheimportantpersonsonthere.Itcanbeamother,fatherorasibling.Butalsoothers.Itcanbeanameorjusttherole.
2. Askthemtotakeanothercardandwriteanotherpersononthere.3. Letthemmovearound,thinkingabouthowtheyprojecttheirimage,andthe
differencetowhotheyare.Stopthem!Askthemtoformgroupsofthreeorfourwiththeclosestpeople.
4. Tellthemthesearetheirchildhoodfriends.Askthemtotalktoeachother.Startbysayingafewwordsaboutwhotheyare,friends,familyandplace.Letthemsayasmuchoraslittleastheywish.Theymightwanttokeepsecrets.Focusonpresentingthearchetypesandgroundingtheminthebackground.Askthemtofindsomethingincommon.Howdotheyknoweachother?Whathaschangedsincetheygottoknoweachother?Dotheyliketheothers?Ordotheyhatethem?Askthemtowritethenameoftheothers,eachonaseparatecard.
5. Askthemtotakeacardandwriteafeelingorattitudethatisimportanttothem.Avaluethatiskeptaboveeverythingelse.Itcouldbepride,joy,freedomorpatriotism.Orsomethingcompletelydifferent.
6. Askthemtothinkofarecentplace,aplacetheyspendtimeatnowadays.Itshouldbeaspecialandpersonalplace.Therecanbeotherpeopleinthere,butmostlyitisaplaceforyourself.Askthemtowritethatplaceonacard.
7. Askthemtomovearoundagain,thinkingoftheircurrentlife.Isthereananimalintheresomewhere?Adog,acat,cattle?Somethingtheycareabout.Howdotheycareaboutit.Askthemtowritetheanimalonacard.
8. Askthemtothinkaboutfriendorfamily,eithersomeonetheythoughtofbeforebuthavenotwrittendown,oranewone.Askthemtowritethatfriendorfamilyonacard.
9. Askthemtomovearound.Feelthedifferencebetweenarchetypeandcharacter,andthinkaboutwhytheyneedtoprojecttheirarchetype.Whatisitthatmakethemsafeinthearchetype.Askthemtostop!Askthemtoform
pairswiththeoneclosesttothem.Ifyouareunevenmakeonegroupofthree.
10. Askthemtotalktoeachother,togettoknowwhotheotheris.Decideifyouwanttopresentyourselfasanarchetype,hidingyourrealself,orifyouwanttoshowthispersonwhoyoureallyare.Youmaychosedifferently.Decideonhowyouknoweachother.Makethisapersonalbond,asdeepasyouwish.Writethenameoftheothercharacteronacard.
11. Movearound.Thinkaboutobjects.Istheresomethingyouvaluehigh?Aguitarorbanjo,yourcar,yourfarm?Writethisobjectonacard.
12. Doyouhaveafeelingorattitudethatisimportant.Avaluethatyoukeepaboveeverythingelse.Doesthisgoinlinewithyourarchetype?Itcouldbepride,joy,freedomorpatriotism.Orsomethingcompletelydifferent.Writethisvalueonacard.
13. Movearoundagain,thenformacircle.14. Leteverybodypresentthemselveswithafewshortsentences.Focusonthe
imageyouproject,notwhoyoureallyare.Asyoudothisasktheplayerstofindoneortwocharacterstheyhavestrongerfeelingsfor,positiveornegative,andletthemwritethesenamesonseparatecards.Alsomakesureeverybodylistensextracarefullytotheplayerstotheirleftandright.
15. Lookattheplayertoyourleft.Thinkaboutwhatyoufeelaboutthischaracter.Writethatnameononecard.Youknowthisplayerwilldothesametoyou.
16. Lookattheplayertoyourright.Thinkaboutwhatyoufeelaboutthischaracter.Writethatnameononecard.Youknowthisplayerwilldothesametoyou.
17. Youmaynowhaveafewcardsleft.Sitdownbyyourselfandthinkaboutifthereissomethingyouaremissing.Somethingduringtheprocessyounevergottowritdownorsomethingnew.Itcanbeanythingsimilartoanyofthepreviouscards.Fillouttherestofthecardsothatyouhavewrittenonthingonallofthem.

Everyscenestartswithamonologue.Oneplayer(thewinnerofthepreviousscene)talksto‘theaudience’andtellsthemaboutwhen,whereandwhattheconflictwas.Presentthisasaspeakervoiceinamovie,makesuretopointtothesettingandtothemainconflictinthescene.Somethinglike:
‘Itwaslaterthesameweek,thewalkershadtakenRedandtherestofushadfledtotheoldbombshelter.Weknewwecouldn’tstayforever,butfornoweverythingwasfine.That’swhenthefightaboutwhattodonexthappened.’
Afterthemonologue,theplayerspickthecardstheyplantoplayinthisscene.Themaytakeasmanyorasfewastheywish.Butoncetheyhavechosenanumbertheycannotchange.Theyhavetomakeachoiceonwhatvaluestheywillputintoplay.Exactlywhatthismeanstothemisuptothemasindividuals.
Thesceneisplayedoutstrivingtowardsaconflictbetweengroups.Aspeoplechosesidestheymoveupbehindthepersonyouaresupportingandtheyputtheirhandontheirshoulder.Aplayermay(andshould)alsosupportsomeonethatsupportssomeoneelse,andtherebyformachain.Ifnoconflictevolvesthescenealwaysendwithzombiesattackingandthepersonwiththeleastcardsdying.
Ifyoufindaconflictitwillbeplayedupuntilitalmostbreaksoutinfullconfrontation.Therealconfrontationwillalwayshappenbetweenscenes.Thegamemasterwillcutthescene(usuallybybringingthemusicup).Ifsomeonehavenotmadetheirchoiceatthecuttingofthescene,theydoit(quickly)then.Whenthesceneiscutitischeckedwhichgroupgottheleastcardsandwhichgroupgotthemostcards.Theleaderofthewinningside(withmostcards)willbethepresenterofthenextscene.Ifaplayerfeelthesceneissointensetheironlynextmoveisconfrontation,theymayendthescenebyshouting:CUT!Fromtherethegamemastertakesoverasusual.
Beforeorduringthescenethegamemasterdecidesifsomeonewilldie.Thegamemastercaneitherkeepthisasecretorannounceitopenly.Dependingonthelookofthescenethiswilleitherbetheplayerwiththeleastamountofcards,ortheplayerontheloosingsidewiththeleastamountofcards.Asthisisalwaysdecidedbeforethecardsarecountednoonecanbesureaboutwhowilldie.Playerswhodiewillcontinuetoplayzombies,actingasgamemastercharactersandco-gamemasters.
Afterthesceneallcardsusedinthatscenearescrapped.Insilencetheplayersgothroughtheircards.Atthispointtheymayexchangecardsforothercardsaslongasthismakessensefortheircharacters,andtheamountisthesame.Astheyendthisprocesstheydropthecardsonthefloor,creatingavisualisationofthelosthumanity.
Theplaythengoesontothenextscene,andsoonuntilthegametimeisover.

Thegameshouldpreferablybeginwithafewsceneswherethethreatisslowlyrising.Theveryfirstscenecouldbeplayedcompletelyfreefromzombies,andwithblankcardstowarmup.
Thesecondandthirdscenesshouldnotcontainanyzombies,butonlydistantthreatsmovingcloser.Ieradiochatter,somethingontheTVorsomethinglurkingintheshadows.
Afterthisthethreatmaycomecloser. Makesurethereisdifferenceinscenes,bothinmodeandinlocation.The
playersmayjumpforwardintime,andthescenesdonotneedtofollowdirectlyaftereachothers.Thiscanbenarratedinthemonologue.
Abouthalf-waythrough,makesuretohaveascenewheretheplayersareawarethereisnoimmediatedanger(e.g.wheninaboardeduphouse),andletthemfocusonthe‘inward’game,developingrelationsandthinkingaboutwheretheyare,whattheyhavedone,andwhatwillhappennext.Thisbreakmakesaddsintensetotherestofthegame.

Everycharacterhas16cards.
Eachcardhasthevalueof1,butitalsocontainsahumanvalue(yourdog,yourcat,yourfather,yoursister,pride,love,yourguitar…oranythingthatyouvalue).Thesearewrittenbytheplayerstogivethemafeelingforthecharacteroutsideofthestereotype.ThisisworkshopedduringthePreparationphase.
Beforeeachsceneintheplayphaseeveryplayertakesanamountofcardsintothescene.Thewinnerofthepreviousscenesetsthenewscenewithashortmonologue.Thesceneisthenplayeduntiltheconflictmentionedinthemonologuefindsitsform.Theplayerschosesideandtheneachsidescardsarecounted.Mostcardswin,andtheleaderwillgetthemonologueforthenextscene,decidingwhathappenedandhowtheywentforward.Thiscanbewinninganargument,butitcanalsobewhosurvivesthezombies.Afterthesceneeverybodytrashesthosecardsinvolved,givingthemlesscardsforthenextscene.
