South Carolina needed a flag to represent their colony William Moultrie was asked by the Revolutionary

Council of Safety to design a flag. A palmetto tree was added to Moultrie’s original

design after the Battle of Charlestown.

The first flag had a blue background to match the soldiers uniforms and a crescent moon to match their caps.

Later the word “Liberty” was added to the flag because the city Charleston was free.

The flag honors soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War.

On June 28, 1776 the British Attacked Fort Moultrie. The fort was Made of palmetto logs and the logs Absorbed the cannonballs. A British shell ripped the South Carolina flag down. William Jasper ranOut in front of the firing cannonballs And put the flag back up.
