Fishing FlashesBy Teo "Weebles" Weber

Salt WaterRemember the new fluke regulations

for 2002 are 8 fish at 16 and one halfinches, up a half inch from last year. Sea-son starts May 18 to Sept. 24. Some flukehave been caught already, but must bereturned. The Bay is full of striped basswith bluefish of all sizes and some niceweakfish mixed in. Local beaches areproviding good action for those who baitfish with stripers up to 30 pounds. Floun-ders are just about finished-the seasonwasn't that good. Offshore, the mackeralare gone, replaced by bluefish of all sizes.Ling fishing has gotten better with still agood number of large blackfish and seabass now moving in solid.

Fresh WaterOpening Day trout turned out to be

great for me as I caught 15, keeping mylimit of 6 and releasing the rest, plus asmall bass. Largest was over 13 inches. The next day my wife and I managed 4 inthe noon time. We fished the North Branchat Far Hills. A week later in the afternoon,we both caught 3 apiece in the Pequest atGreat Meadows-total of 6.1 tried there andthe lower Pequest the last weekend ofApril, catching only 3 despite low waterand lots of people. Largest was a rainbowover 13 Q inches. I also tried for shad at theKing Cole Pool off 46, but did nothing.Too much low, cold water. Like I saidbefore, this years shad run so far is not thatgreat.

St. Mary's High School graduates, Jerry Smith (I), Brian Conlon (c), and Peter Mclntyre (r),have been friends for over 40 years, and are celebrating their 30th Anniversary of workingtogether at the Middlesex County Board of Social Services.

Still TogetherBy Jerry Smith

When The SA Times asked me toreflect on my upcoming 30lh anniversary atMiddlesex County Board of Social Ser-vices, I couldn't resist pointing out thattwo childhood friends have been with meevery step of the way.

Brian Conlon, Peter Mclntyre and Iattended St. Mary's Elementary and St.Mary' s High School together in the 1950\sand 60's. We also attended the samecollege in the early 1970's.

Moreover, we've worked forthe samesocial service agency for virtually all of

our adult lives. For much of the time,we've been in the same department doingsimilar work. Pete now works in AdultProtective Services. Brian works with meon housing-related problems.

Maintaining childhood friendshipsinto adulthood is perhaps more difficulttoday than in earlier generations. Peoplemove, change schools and change jobs sooften. Nevertheless, we've been on a par-allel course for over 40 years. There maycome a day when one of us breaks thestreak, but let's not think about that yet.

I would also like to thank everyonewho took the time to examine the schoolbudget and who went out to vote. The 400-vote margin is encouraging that our resi-dents want to support our children andmaintain a strong educational system inSayreville.

As a member of the Sayreville Boardof Education, I will continue to work withthe community, local and state govern-ment officials in seeking a way to end theover reliance on property taxes to fundpublic education.

Dear Editor,I enjoyed reading your story "Who

Was Who In 1962 In South Amboy." Irecall the political activity generated thatyear, because Middlesex County becamethe 15lh Congressional District and therewas much competition by Republicansand Democrats for the office of Congress-man, beginning with the June primary be-tween George Otlowski and Edward Patten.Patten won and became the first Congress-man from the new 15lh Congressional Dis-trict of Middlesex County.

Memorial Day is a patriotic holiday celebrated by all of the United States. It was originally known asDecoration Day in which it honored those in the military who died during the Civil War. Now the holidayhonors all of the men and women who sacrificed their lives in any war. Memorial Day became a federal

holiday in 1971, although many Southern States have their own days for honoring the Confederate dead.

Several communities have tried to claim the originating Memorial Day. In 1966, the United States governmentproclaimed Waterloo, New York, the birthplace of this holiday. On May 6,1866, Waterloo observed this day to honorthose who died during the Civil War.

Major General John A. Login in 1868 named May 30 the day to honor the graves of Union soldiers. He was acommander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization for union veterans of the Civil War. Theyhad charge of the celebration for many years. After World War I, the American Legion took over this duty.

We celebrate Memorial Day in many ways including parades, placing flowers and flags, on the graves of the men andwomen who lost their 1 ives in battle. There are also memorials dedicated on this day. Memorial Day can also be knownfor the poppies that are sold to help the disabled veterans.

We should give thanks to the men and women who gave their lives to keep our country safe and free.

Women & Wellness-Part 1One of the common denominators of

the young and healthy is the ability to beflexible. One of the characteristics ofindividuals as they get older and sicker isthat they become less flexible and morerigid. Flexibility is a very interesting dualtrait because we are born with it and it canalways be relearned.

Middle aged American women aremore physically weak and in more painthan experts assumed based on a recentstudy of more than 9,(K)0 from 40-55 yearsold. The study shows that 20% have troublewith simple tasks like walking one block, walking up a flight of stairs, and carryinggroceries, as well as bathing and dressing. In addition 55% say they felt stiffness orsoreness in their joints, neck or shouldersin the last 2 weeks. These physical limita-tions and lack of flexibility indicate anincreased need for women to utilize medi-cation and require hospitalizations.

Are you aware that the Centers for1 )isease Control and Prevention say that 23million women currently suffer from ar-thritis and it is predicted that the numberswill grow to 36 million sufferers in the next20 years? The next most common com-plaint for women is high blood pressure, which affects 8 million.

A new study finds that women whoexercise after menopause tend to outlivesedentary women and that as little as onewalk a week can make a difference. Themore that older women exercise, the bettertheir chances of a long life, said research-ers in the Journal of American MedicalAssociation. The more hours older womenspend on the move and off their seat, theless likely she is to break a hip says a largenew study.

Basketball Hall of Famer Nate "Tiny"Archibald (Photo By Tom Burkard)

Basketball Hall of Famer, Nate "Tiny"Archibald did his part to help raise funds atthe WTC Author/Book/Celebrity Benefitfor Staten Island Rescue Company #5.The event, sponsored by Emma L. Arleth, and Dwight D. Eisenhower elementaryschools in Sayreville drew over 1,000people and raised $16,000.

Archibald, who was in the library, signed hundreds of autographs for peopleof all ages, while engaging in some veryinteresting conversations on just aboutanything, including his illustrious career inthe National Basketball Association.

Archibald starred for 14 years in theNBA, and scored 16,481 points (18.8 ppg.)

Burkardand dished out 6,476 assists, as well asbeing a six-time All Star, and winning theAll Star Game MVP in 1981. He wasenshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in1991.

While chatting with Nate, I found outthat he was a real unselfish team player. Inresponse to the question, "What was yourbiggest thrill in basketball?" He didn'teven think twice and responded, "Winningthe World Championship in '81 with theCeltics."

I then asked him which of his team-mates, Wilt Chamberlain or Kareem AbdulJabbar was better, but he wouldn't choose, saying that "They played in different times,so how can you really say who was better?"

When asked what was the most assistshe had in one game, he had no idea, ordidn't care, but stressed the importance ofteam overhis own individual performance."Tiny" also mentioned the pressure he felt, when he was picked in the 2"d round of theNBA draft in 1970 by the old CincinnatiRoyals. "Oscar Robertson was my idol, and I was selected to replace him, so it wastough with lots of pressure," he said.

Archibald certainly did well at replac-ing the basketball legend, and along theway became a legend in his own right. In1996, he was selected along with OscarRobertson to the NBA's 50'h AnniversaryAll-Time Team, as one of the 50 greatestplayers in the history of the game.

My brief conversation with Nate"Tiny" Archibald was one I'll never for-get! He is a very sincere individual, wholoves the game, and also, above everythingelse always put the team first. My hat's offto a first-class person and Hall of Famer!
