Nelson Mandela discharged from hospital into home careby STAFF REPORTERFORMER President Nelson Mandela returned to his home on Saturday, following a sustained and gradual improvement in his general condition. The former president and global moral icon’s latest bout of respiratory troubles had made news around the world. “FORMER President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital today, April 6, following a sustained and gradual improvement in his general condition,” Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement. “The former President will now receive home-based high care.” President Jacob Zuma has thanked the hard working medical team and hospital staff for looking after Madiba so efficiently.

He also extended his gratitude to all South Africans and friends of the Republic in Africa and around the world for support. - SAnews.gov.za © 2013 Zapiro (All rights reserved) Used with permission from www.zapiro.com

Hospital in Gauteng. This cause has Silver Vallance’s

undivided support due to his exposure to the “fantastic work” of The Red Cross War Memorial’s Hospital in Cape Town, gained while he was working as a paramedic in the Western Cape Ambulance Service. Silver-

Vallance said “After lift-off, I soon realised that this was not a scene out of a movie – this was serious. The fairytale landing that we had envisioned where I would drift gently down in front of the crowds at Eden on the Bay didn’t materialise, which is often the case with a stunt of this scale. Continued from front page the weather are always factors out of our control, no matter how well one plans, so I am overjoyed that we managed to successfully complete the mission.”

Vuyo Lutseke, Media and Communications Officer of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust, was thrilled at the success of the event. She said, “We are honoured that Matt has gone to these extraordinary lengths to help raise money to build the hospital. We are

delighted that he has succeeded and it just goes to show that - as Madiba taught us – when we as a community come together, anything is possible. ” If Silver-Vallance’s awe-inspiring flight shows us anything, it’s that Nelson Mandela was right: it always seems impossible until it’s done. Revered South African religious leader awarded for being a moral voice for love, peace and justice

Desmond Tutu to receive £1.1mil Templeton Prize in London

by STAFF REPORTERDESMOND Tutu, Nobel laureate and former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, has been awarded the 2013 Templeton Prize for his lifelong work in advancing spiritual principles such as love and forgiveness which have helped to liberate people around the world.

Valued at £1.1 million, the Templeton Prize has been the world’s largest annual monetary award given to an individual for the past 40 years.

Tutu joins a distinguished group of 42 former recipients. Last year’s Templeton Prize Laureate was Tutu’s friend the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader. Each year the Prize celebrates a living person who has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works. Tutu will receive the Templeton Prize at a ceremony at the Guildhall in London on 21 May. Established in 1972 by the late global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton, the Templeton Prize is a cornerstone of the John Templeton Foundation’s international efforts to serve as a philanthropic catalyst for discoveries relating to the Big Questions of human purpose and ultimate reality.

Tutu said in response to receiving the Prize, “When you are in a crowd and you stand out from the crowd it’s usually because you are being carried on the shoulders of others. I want to acknowledge all the wonderful people who accepted me as their leader at home and so to accept this prize in a representative capacity.”

Templeton, the president and chairman of the John Templeton Foundation, noted, “Desmond

Tutu calls upon all of us to recognise that each and every human being is unique in all of history and, in doing so, to embrace our own vast potential to be agents for spiritual progress and positive change. Not only does he teach this idea, he lives it.”

Tutu rose to world prominence with his stalwart and successful opposition to South Africa’s apartheid regime. He combines the theological concept that all human beings are shaped in the image of God, known in Latin as Imago Dei, with the traditional African belief of Ubuntu, which holds that only through others do people achieve humanity which, he says, creates “a delicate network of interdependence.”

His calls to common humanity

began in the 1970s, when he used positions within the church to focus global attention on the apartheid policies of South Africa’s ruling minority. After Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 and subsequent election as president in the country’s first multi-ethnic democratic elections, Tutu chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission employing a revolutionary and relentless policy of confession, forgiveness and resolution that helped shepherd his nation from institutionalised racial repression toward an egalitarian democracy.

SA property conman uses Sexwale name to swindle London investorsby BRETT PETZERTHE name of Tokyo Sexwale, South African real estate tycoon and minister of Human Settlements, has been used by a confidence trickster to scam Londoners out of about £570 (R8,000) each. The London investors believed that they were making a deposit towards the ownership of a buy-to-let property in Cape Town. The fraudster, Hennie van Buuren, claimed to represent Sexwale through CAD Projects – a reputable Cape property development concern – and was able to show

impressive documentation backing this claim, according to victims. One victim, Chuma Ndwandwe (33), told The New Age that he had not only invested himself, but had introduced five others to Van Buuren, all of whom had invested. Jeremy Steenkamp, director of CAD Projects – refused to comment at the time of going to press, but has been quoted as saying that Van Buuren’s fraudulent activities were unknown to him, that he had had no involvement in the proceeds thereof, and that Van Buuren had resigned several months earlier after working

for CAD Projects for less than a year. Steenkamp invited all those who had been taken in using CAD Projects documentation to contact him. Van Buuren is currently untraceable, despite being a hitherto well-known property agent dealing with South Africans in the UK.

Sexwale’s name – essentially a blue-chip reference in South African business circles – has proven irresistible to fraudsters before. In November last year, Onasis Maxam, known as the Post Office scammer, posed as Sexwale’s employee in his R2 million fraud case.

THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SMASH HIT ARRIVES IN LONDON

Award-winning SA film Otelo Burning hits London screens this monthComing-of-age story about township kids learning to surf will have a

six-night theatrical release from 16 April until 21 April in venues across Londonby STAFF REPORTERSOUTH African drama Otelo Burning, directed by award-winning filmmaker Sara Blecher, will be released in the UK this spring by Aya Distribution, in association with the New Black Film Network.

This cutting edge production is somewhere between City of God and Blue Crush, a coming-of-age story about township kids learning to surf. Set against the backdrop of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, it looks at the enormous potential for change at the time of apartheid’s downfall – all seen through the eyes of a child.

This film will have a six-night theatrical release from 16 April until 21 April in venues across London. Events will include a premiere, music events and panel discussions.

Shot in Durban, Otelo Burning tells the story of a group of teenagers who discover the joy of surfing. When 16-year old Otelo Buthelezi takes to the water for the first time, it’s clear he was born to surf. But tragedy strikes. On the day Mandela is released from prison, Otelo is forced to choose between surfing success and justice.

It’s a visually dynamic and emotionally powerful drama about three friends in the township of Lamontville - Otelo, New Year and Mandla - as they look for an escape during a time of turmoil.

They are on the cusp of making it when they turn on each other.

The story becomes one of greed, betrayal and jealousy, a metaphor for a nation grappling with its own freedom. This is a beautifully made film that captures a turbulent

time in the history of South Africa.Mesmerising from start to finish

this film takes viewers right to the heart of issues facing youth during apartheid, encouraging us all to rethink what freedom means to us.

Otelo Burning has played at over 50 film festivals around the world including screenings at the BFI London International Film Fest. The film was honoured at the 2012 African Movie Academy Awards, where it won two of 13 total nominations, for Best Cinematography and Best Child Actor (Tshepang Mohlomi).“This is a young, vibrant, sexy story. I don’t think people would put young black kids in 1990 together with surfing; that’s what makes it so striking, unique and local,” said director Sara Blecher, a documentary director and producer whose projects include Bay of Plenty, an award-winning drama series chronicling the lives of a group of Zulu lifeguards in Durban. In 2011 Blecher released Surfing Soweto, a documentary following the lives (and deaths) of a group of so-called ‘train surfers’. Otelo Burning is her first feature film.

Justine Atkinson, director of Aya Distribution, said, “From the moment we watched Otelo Burning we were moved and inspired.

Through captivating cinematography and rare scenes of black South Africans surfing it shows the multi-faceted nature of apartheid and the price of freedom. We are passionate about releasing African films into the UK market, and are glad this film marks the forefront of this endeavour.”

Traces of my grandma

KAREN DE VILLIERS

The OPTIMIST

‘AMSTERDAM, de grote stad, met hoeveel letters spel mens dat?’ Always fell for that one, counting the letters beginning with ‘A’ until my granny would chortle and say, ‘Drie. D.A.T.’

Hours ago I was standing at the doorway of the house my grandmother was born in. 16 Hugo de Groot Plein, Amsterdam.

The building is deserted, a dark pallor of neglect wrapped around it. The garnet coloured door garish and unloved. But it’s been standing for more than a hundred years, for some of those a happy place for a little girl with a big bow in her hair.

Never had the chance to talk to my grandmother about her life. Children were never that familiar with elders. What I did learn is that Gesina Wilhelmina Oets was engaged to a man much older, who was off in Africa making a living before sending for her. When the

day finally came, she boarded a ship to Cape Town, her

head filled with images of palm trees and sandy,

tropical beaches. How frightened she must

have been, leaving everything she had always known

and her family, to embark on a life with a near stranger in a foreign country. Two days after docking she was married, on a train heading to the dust bowl of the Free State, and never to see her mother again. Not a palm tree in sight.

I wonder if she moaned about the weather as much as I do? Worried about her family during the war when life was unsafe in Holland and Europe? Did she carry all her unique mannerisms with her; create new traditions to remind her of home as I do?

Did my grandmother ever lie in the dark hours of night and wonder if she had made the biggest mistake of her life? I am pretty sure she did; I have done the same and every individual who leaves the confines of a structured life for horizons unknown will continue the ritual. For me, life and family is an overnight flight, communication is optimum, practically next to each other. Then letters took months.

Standing in front of the tall, skinny building she lived in; finding her birth certificate in the archives, I think of how she must have trembled saying good-bye, one final time. A few suitcases, dreams ahead and dreams lost in the mist.

I remember my trembling.Coming back to Europe is my

return journey for my grandmother. Stories and songs I learnt in Dutch as a little girl come to life on this trip. Orals is Moccha Ouma, sjokomel, poffertjies. There’s the Heerengracht, die Westerse Kerk and the Dam. My children are reluctant to eat ‘drop’, the salty liquorice.

My blood runs thick with your history. Because of you Ouma, I am South African. My culture mixed up with yours. But for your journey, mine would now have been so very different. Am drinking a little glass of Genewer to you.

This re-mastered two-CD package includes his creative highlights, spanning a 15-year career. Disc 1 features riveting performances taken from his illustrious nine solo albums, featuring such gems as, ‘Counting Stars’, ‘Beautiful Feet’, Anna Rosa’, Felix’, ‘May you shine’ and ‘Cry for you’. Disc 2 is a bonus CD entitled Catching Trains – Nibs solo live through Europe. This traces his footsteps through numerous tours in France, Germany and the UK. Never released before, these selections of live performance were handpicked by Nibs himself.

Nibs’s virtuosic acoustic guitar style and a mesmeric whispering voice have attracted a widespread following for its intelligent folk, world and African overtones. His diversity as a solo songwriter and guitarist first reached a mass audience with the release of his solo albums Lines on my face (1999) and Flower in the rain (2002).

His third offering Beautiful Feet was released internationally in 2007 and received rave reviews in the UK, Europe and Australia. Nibs’ following releases, A Bird in the Hand (2008) and A House Across the River (2010) also received accolades across the globe.

Germany’s Jazzthetic publication cited them as future classics of the folk genre while The Guardian praised Nibs for producing the most sensitive and breathy songs and instrumentals on the continent.

Nibs toured Europe for the best part of 2011 and released his all acoustic album Morning Star, which features only voice and various guitars recorded in a day.

Franschoek Cape Seed LoafTHE smell of baked bread is something that evokes happy memories. One of my favourite breads is this recipe I use, which my pastry-chef brother kindly loaned me. You can make small loaves/ bread rolls or a few larger loaves.

Yield: 6 loaves

Ingredients1500g Wholewheat flour300g White bread flour250g Crushed wheat (which has

been soaked)250g Sunflower seed100ml Vegetable oil100g Golden syrup70g Fresh yeastPoppy seeds50g Salt25ml Vinegar1500ml Water

mixing bowl and mix together for approx 12 minutes. (The mixture will be quite wet).

Grease and flour your baking tins and divide the recipe equally amongst them.

Turn out and leave to rest for 10 minutes.

Serve warm with waatlemoen- konfyt or simply butter and salt.

Johnny Clegg’s truly South African spectacular at Royal Albert HallHistory was made on Wednesday 27 March, as Johnny Clegg gave a captivating performance of his highly acclaimed show ‘A

South African Story’, to a near sell-out crowd at the Royal Albert Hall in Londonby RYAN MIZZEN THE Royal Albert Hall is an iconic stage which has hosted some of the biggest names and greatest shows in the world. It is only fitting that it should finally have hosted South Africa’s biggest and much loved musical export – Johnny Clegg.

A thunderous high energy opening of ‘Bombs Away’ set the tone for the rest of the momentous evening. The audience comprised mainly of

South Africans was consequently held captivated by an exceedingly well-coordinated showcase of classic Johnny Clegg songs. From each of these emanated a sense of African warmth and belonging that managed to dispel the chill of the London night. In the second half of the show, ‘Great Heart’ received a loud cheer as it was accompanied by scenes from the legendary film Jock of the Bushveld. No Johnny Clegg

performance would be complete without dancing, and A South African Story was no exception. Johnny’s famous Zulu kick was on display for ‘Tatazela’, and ‘Gumba Gumba Jive’ was complimented by a Pantsula dance. By the time ‘I Call Your Name’ was played, the crowd could not help but rise to their feet and dance along. There was no chance of the crowd returning to their seats as favourites including ‘Impi’, ‘Great

Heart’, ‘Scatterlings of Africa’ and ‘It’s A Cruel Crazy Beautiful World’ followed in quick succession.

Another element of A South African Story involved anecdotes prior to certain songs, explaining their origin and meaning. The story behind ‘Bullets for Bafazane’ was particularly enthralling and Johnny managed to add a lighthearted touch to what must have been a frightening time for all members of the band.

Johnny spoke about how Zulu dancing is ‘earth-orientated’ and involves a lot of foot stamping. The crowd seemed to take this to heart and at the end of the second part, vibrations raced through the Royal Albert Hall as the crowd stamped

their feet in unison, calling for more. The show climaxed with two more

huge favourites; ‘Asimbonanga’ and ‘Dela’. Pictures of Nelson Mandela accompanied ’Asimbonanga’, before video footage of him unexpectedly walking onto stage during Johnny’s performance in Frankfurt. The chorus ended and the song paused, allowing Mandela’s voice to fill the Hall. The band kicked in with the chorus as the lights lifted, encompassing the audience in their glow. This fantastic show in a grand venue will go down as one of Johnny’s greatest performances in the UK. We can only hope his uplifting presence graces our shores again in the not-too-distant future.

Mobile phone payment cards open new frontier

by WASHINGTON GIKUNJUFACED with a stubborn resistance to the use of credit and debit cards in the African market, Visa and MasterCard are in the process of rolling out a massive trial of new mobile-phone embedded payment cards. The two global plastic card giants are banking on the huge suc-cess of Kenya’s M-Pesa, a world ac-claimed mobile-phone based money transfer and payments service which has enrolled 20 million users in about five years, to tap into the high demand for financial services in Af-rica. “The uptake of mobile-based financial services points to an inter-esting fact: give consumers a secure, convenient and affordable service that addresses their daily challenges, and they will quickly adopt it even if it is based on a technology that is new to them,” said the Master-Card Vice President for East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, James Wainaina, in an interview with GTA Magazine. MasterCard has signed an agreement with Equity Bank, Kenya’s largest lender by customer numbers, which will see up to five million of the bank’s clients get free smart cards that will be embedded onto their mobile phones. The cards are usable at retail pay points by plugging the buyers’ phones into an internet connected device, form-ing a mobile point of sale (MPOS) terminal. The cards also have “PayPass” technology for swiping at the MPOS terminals, similar to the Near Field Communication software that is already a common feature in Japan and is gaining traction in the West. MasterCard has also signed an agreement with a Kenyan university students organisation and East Africa’s largest retail chain, Nakumatt, through which it hopes to sign up more users of the smart cards. Visa, on the other hand, has already launched its own version of mobile phone payment card in South Africa where it partnered

Total approves $10 billion Congo project for 2015 startup

by STAFF REPORTERTOTAL and its partners, including Chevron have invested $10 billion into a development off the coast of Congo, which is expected to produce 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2017, the French oil company said in March.

The Moho Nord joint development, which is scheduled to be fully operational by 2015, is one of a series of Total’s African investments which it hopes will help the company to increase their oil production by 25 per cent over the next five years.

The offshore Moho Nord oil and gas project is the largest of its kind in the Republic of Congo. “The launch enhances visibility

with a bank, and has plans to roll out in Kenya by mid this year. “We see this as an opportunity for small businesses to have a low cost and convenient access to point of sale devices. MPOS is about enabling smaller retailers to accept cards instead of simply cash,” said the Visa Country Manager for Southern and East Africa, Jabu Basopo in an interview. Visa says it has over seven million card users in Kenya alone, out of a total 9.9 million debit and credit cards in usage as per the Central Bank of Kenya annual data for June 2012. Despite being in Africa for more than half a century, Visa and MasterCard have never quite marshalled a critical mass of plastic card users in Sub-Saharan Africa that could make their busi-ness nearly as big as it is in the West and other parts of the world that long ago embraced usage of plastic money in large numbers. There are several key reasons behind this failed take-off. Slow economic growth on the continent has in the past limited the number of potential takers of both debit and credit cards, as the majority of the population remained locked out of the formal banking system with little in the way of disposable incomes. Infra-structure shortcomings have limited connectivity only to urban areas, which are the only areas with reli-

able fixed telephone lines necessary for transmitting user information for electronic payments.

Incidences of fraud, especially helped by the easy-to-copy magnetic strip cards have spawned a deep mistrust for virtual money and deepened fear of credit cards among potential users. The success of mobile-phone-based cash transfers and payments has forced the two firms to rethink their Africa penetration strategy, with their target being to take away a piece of the huge pie that mobile connectivity has created in Africa.

“Our desire is for consumers to know that they do not have to carry cash with them because they can use the MPOS devices wherever they need to carry out a transaction, no matter how low the value of the transaction is,” said Mr Wainaina. A major constraint for the MPOS technology however is reliability of the internet connection on which the system is anchored.

Though the uptake of smart phones supported by 3G technology is catching pace on the continent, most users still have devices that run on 2G connections. This means bandwidth constraints may hinder speed and uptake of the MPOS technology, even though the card firms say it is configured to operate even with 2G connected devices.

on Total’s production growth objective,” said Yves-Louis Darricarrere, Total’s head of exploration.

Total the operator of the Moho-Bilondo license, has a 53.5 percent share and Chevron a 31.5 percent working interest, and the Congo’s national oil company holds the rest.

“Moho Nord is further indication of our commitment to West Africa where Chevron has made sizable investments,” said Ali Moshiri, president of Chevron’s Africa and Latin America exploration and production group. Further south the US oil and gas company also has a significant investment off the coast of Angola.

Rand rallies on risk sentimentBY STAFF REPORTERTHE South African Rand is enjoying a stronger showing going into the second quarter of 2013 after a horrid first quarter, which saw the ZAR hitting four-year lows against its major currency counterparts. After figures released

last week reflected that February’s trade deficit was far slimmer than January, the Rand received a sentiment-based boost. “The trade data came as a huge relief which many in the market are interpreting as early signs that the weaker Rand is starting to have a positive effect

in restoring balance to the trade and current account deficits,” said Tradition Analytics. (news24.com).

The Rand redeemed itself even further heading towards the end of the week, hitting three-week highs.

This was mainly due to international banking stimulation driven by the Japanese government announcing it will inject $1, 4 trillion into its economy, reigniting risk sentiment in the international market place. Also driving the renewed interest in riskier asset/currencies was the announcement by European Central bank president Mario Draghi that interest rate cuts have not been ruled out in the near future. Buoyed by accommodative policies being put in place by major economy banks, emerging markets - South Africa included - received further renewed interest by international investors.GBP/ZAR: 13.92EUR/ZAR: 11.82USD/ZAR: 9.10AUD/ZAR: 9.44

bewildered average consumer making ordinary purchases online. By December, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos made the cover of Time Magazine as its Person of the Year, and Thawte had been sold to US giant VeriSign for US$ 575 million.

Shuttleworth had no need ever to work again, but he was just getting started. By September of the next year, Here Be Dragons (HBD) Venture Capital saw the light of day. HBD aimed to find, nurture and financially back South African talent in information technology.

The feedback from this venture informed Shuttleworth’s next steps. The takeup of South African school-leavers into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) programmes at the tertiary level was low; the youth of Mzansi seemed to aspire instead to a life of sport or media stardom or a turn at the trough of public sector largesse.

In 2001, Mark saw the need for the Shuttleworth Foundation, aimed at the throughput of more bright young minds into STEM programmes - whereafter, with the right idea and a little of their own funding, HBD stood ready to monetise and upscale the African tech fundis of the future.

All these direct interventions,

however, were limited in

scope: they mostly applied

to one country - South Africa - at a time when, as now, South Africa already accounted for more than two thirds of Africa’s internet presence. Shuttleworth saw the opportunity for a more systemic and basic contribution in the form of open-source software, an idea which was just beginning to gain traction in the aftermath of the 2001 crunch. After years in development, Ubuntu - a now-standard distribution based on the Linus Pauling’s open-source Linux system - was brought to the world with Shuttleworth funding. The Ubuntu project continues today with more than 20 million users,

but the fire of intellectual conquest was really kindled by computer games. Mark branched out from entertainment into the philosophy that underpinned computers, and information technology generally.

This interest expanded into the fields of software engineering, particle physics, digital media and biotechnology. When he left Bishops (as headboy, in 1991), however, South Africa was a little further from the mainstream in the field of technology; instead of a straight science degree, Shuttleworth chose to take a Bachelor of Business Science degree at UCT, majoring in Finance.

This was the meeting point between two entities that would change each other deeply: Shuttleworth sat down at an internet terminal for the first time. By 1995, his final year, Shuttleworth founded Thawte Consulting, an internet consulting business in a decidedly pre-internet South Africa.

If it was brave to found an internet consultancy in a country where only 33,000 people were online at the time, it was also far-sighted. Shuttleworth was able to create a product of global relevance from distant Cape Town by thinking both systematically and speculatively about the future of the medium in an evolving global commercial context.

By 1999, when 560,000 South Africans were ‘surfing the Net’, Thawte had managed to build a world-leading technology for securing internet payments. At a time when the total e-commerce market was worth only $145 billion - and before the great 2001 tech crunch - Shuttleworth’s application made an important difference to the feel of online commerce, enticing the still-

by BRETT PETZERMARK Shuttleworth had already made history as the first great South African self-made IT billionaire by the age of 20 something. But - apart from moving to the fiscally advantageous Isle of Man - Mark Shuttleworth isn’t like many billionaires.

Well ahead of the current imperative for plutocrats to distribute most of their wealth in a demonstrably uplifting way, Shuttleworth resolved to let technology do to others what it had done to him. He went on to back, and see out of infancy, the foremost open-source software OS available today. At the same time, his Hip2B² initiative had a broad impact across South African schools in its drive to generalise enthusiasm for science, mathematics and information technology as careers. His Shuttleworth Foundation is a model of open philanthropy, with the aim of establishing a sort of Silicon Vlei (or veld) in South Africa. Most dramatically, Shuttleworth rocketed himself into space in 2002. While the first-world commentariat was quick to present his time in the exosphere as a new spin on the old tale of heartless excess from Africa’s super-rich, others - especially in the Global South - saw the idea of an African among the stars as the revolutionary symbol Shuttleworth intended.

Mark Richard Shuttleworth had a comfortable but far from stellar beginning in life in the mining town of Welkom in the Free State. His schooling at Cape Town’s Diocesan College (more commonly known as Bishops) was excellent,

David WillersVice-chairman of Business Council for Africa

and Shuttleworth still named as Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life. Shuttleworth, at all of 39 years, appears to have accomplished that rarest of balancing acts: a billionaire who manages to generate both change (that must be boring if it is to be real, sustainable and systemic) and buzz (that can recast once-dull fields into magnets for young talent). Hearing Shuttleworth speak to Madiba and a young, terminally-ill South African called Michelle Foster from the ISS was the buzz, but the unlocking of human capital - that open-source software is making possible as you read this is - is the sea-change.

by STAFF REPORTERMOST television viewers across the world will recognise her from her recurring role alongside Holly-wood A-lister Charlie Sheen on the popular American sitcom Two And a Half Men. But Tinashe Kach-ingwe is the next big thing waiting to explode on the US and global music scene.

Although her debut album isn’t even out yet, her sultry and rhythmic offerings have drawn her comparisons to the reigning queen of R&B, Mrs Shawn Carter, aka Beyonce. And this month London music fans will get to preview the multi-talented Tinashe live on stage when she headlines this year’s Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) ceremony at the Millenium Gloucester Hotel on 20 April.

A native of Kentucky, Tinashe is of Zimbabwean and Irish/Norwegian/Danish ancestry and moved to Los Angeles on the west coast when she was eight. Despite being born and raised in the US, she speaks fluent Shona.

Tinashe first grabbed the attention of music fans as lead singer of the five-member girl group The Stunners. The girls toured with Justin Bieber on his ‘My World’ tour. They were in line to release their debut album with Universal Republic Records before the project was shelved after the group

disbanded in 2011.But while the curtains were

being drawn on The Stunners era, Tinashe’s solo career was just taking off. With her eclectic musical style that she describes as a mixture of “urban, rhythmic and pop”, peppered with influences from indie, alternative, and hip hop, Tinashe released two critically acclaimed mixtapes in 2012.

Her debut, titled In Case We Die, dropped in February last year and spawned four singles, including the track ‘This Feeling’.

The mixtape served as an introduction to Tinashe’s solo work; she spent 18 straight days working on it, doing all the writing, production and recording in the confines of her bedroom. She explained, “I was very inspired by the thought of a lover’s last words before death – baring their soul and their secrets before it was too late… and trying to capture that half-fear we all secretly have that the inevitable is sooner than we are ready for.”

In July 2012, Tinashe signed her first solo major label recording contract with RCA/Sony Music. In September, she released her second critically acclaimed mixtape Reverie.

The mixtape released three singles: “Stargazing”, “Ecstasy” and “Who Am I Working For?”.

Girl rights activist Betty Makoni launches her autobiography in UK

Betty Makoni’s story ‘Never Again, Not To Any Woman Or Girl Again’, will be officially launched on Friday 13 Aprilby STAFF REPORTER “VIOLENCE against women and girls must stop once and for all. We made a decision to be victorious and not victims and so we will gather at Thurrock hotel in Purfleet, Essex, in the warmth of a quiet and soothing environment to do something great,” says Betty Makoni, the Zimbabwean founder of Girl-Child Network which champions the rights of girls and women.

Betty’s life tragically fell apart when she was raped at the age of six. At age nine, her mother died in domestic violence, forcing her to be a mother instead of a daughter. She told herself one day she would break the silence and inspire millions across the globe to do the same. Betty believes in empowering girls through her story and the stories of many other women.

Her painful yet uplifting story, Never Again: Not To Any Woman Or Girl Again, will be officially launched on 13 April and this opens a Never Again campaign by every woman. This will be a night to

reflect, speak, laugh, cry, fundraise, give, take, dance, hug and forge ahead.

“Wearing our royal purple we will support Girl Child Network Worldwide to keep programs on the ground in Zimbabwe so that we rescue the lives of girls at risk. By purchasing a ticket here you are automatically making a school fees donation or rescuing a girl being raped,” explains Betty.

All proceeds from this event go to Girl Child Network Worldwide Girls Empowerment and Education Fund. Come get your signed copy of book. Guests should come ready to read their favourite excerpts from Betty’s book. Oozing sex appeal and yet exuding class and elegance, the dancer, singer and songwriter is currently putting the final touches to her debut solo album, set to be released later this year.

On 20 April, Tinashe will lead a stellar cast of performers at this year’s edition of the ZAA ceremony, the Zimbabwean community in the UK’s premier red carpet event to honour the outstanding achievements of its members across all walks of life.

A self-confessed shoe fanatic and lover of scary movies, the dainty singer is full of surprising personal quirks. For instance, she became a Taekwondo black belt at the tender age of 11 and has actually won a gold medal in competition in her home state of California!

“My parents decided to sign me up for Taekwondo when I was younger. After a year or so, I wasn’t that into it anymore, but they were always the kind of people who encouraged me to stick with things, so they made me continue until I got a black belt,” she said in a recent interview.

Her debut studio album will feature the contributions of Grammy Award winning producers around the world. Although her camp has not confirmed the exact line-up, names that have been associated with the project include Clams Casino, Ryan Hemsworth, T-Minus,

Boi-1da, Fisticuffs, Best Kept Secret and Ritz Reynolds.

On the experience of moving from doing her own thing to working with a major record label, she said, “It’s been a great transition into the major label situation. They’ve created a lot of opportunities for me. It’s also difficult to go from being completely on your own to collaborating. But it’s a fun creative process to be able to work with people.”

With a legion of devoted fans on social media helping to make her one of the most followed new

artists in the US, the anticipation for her album is skyrocketing. She has almost 300,000 Twitter followers, making her a Top 100 most followed person in both Los Angeles and New York. Her YouTube account is approaching 10 million views, while her mixtapes have been downloaded well over a million times.www.TinasheNow.comFacebook.com/officialtinashe@tinashe Youtube.com/tinashenow Book tickets for the ZAA on www.zimachievers.com

The Many Flavours of FlorenceItaly is a country jam-packed with culture, scenery and gastronomy. However, if you only have a few days Amber

Rose recommends heading to Florence to get the best flavours of Italy, in one stunning location

by AMBER ROSESOME places are intimidating

to visit because there is just so much to see and experience. Italy is one of those places. The slender Italian peninsula more than makes up for what it lacks in size with what it has to offer in culture, scenery, gastronomy – I could go on. But then you probably already knew all of this, Italy is not a hard sell. I planned my trip with an unreasonable fear that if I didn’t do it all, I was going to miss out on something amazing.

If you only have an opportunity for a short break, and Italy is on your to-do list, then I would suggest a few days in Florence to get a feel for what Italy is all about. The breath-taking first lady of Tuscany, Florence is nestled quietly amongst the rolling hills and sun-drenched vineyards of the surrounding Italian countryside. Much calmer than her hectic cousin Rome, Florence somehow manages to combine gorgeous architecture, couture shopping streets, hustle-bustle markets, galleries crammed with classics, and amazing culinary experiences, without the frantic pace of some of the big tourist cities.

Art expert or not, one gallery will be on your must-see list in Florence. It is the Galleria dell’Accademia, home to the stunning David, a man-mountain carved from a single slab of marble by the Italian master Michelangelo. The dell’Accademia is also home to some other great art – when I visited they also had some Andy Warhol and Picasso works on show as part of a temporary exhibit. The street artists in Florence are at another level too, and you can even commission some of them to paint something of your choice while you wait, for a reasonable price – beats taking home just another tacky souvenir.

If shopping is your thing, you will be in heaven in Florence. The cobbled streets and piazzas are home to all the usual European high street suspects, but it’s the markets that really set Florence apart. Some run every day, like the San Lorenzo Market and the Porcellino Market, while some only run at weekends or monthly. I was lucky enough to time my stay with a monthly antique market , Mercato di Santo Spirito, which had everything for sale from vintage clothes, to hand-painted ceramics and porcelain, home-cooked Italian goodies to antique furniture. Most of the markets also carry an array of leather-goods, with everything from bags to belts to bookmarks. You should be able to pick up a guide to the Florentine markets complete with map from where you’re staying or at information points.

Being at the door-step of the Tuscan countryside means that you must get out and see it. There are many options available from Florence, including Fiat, Vespa, even horseback, but in my opinion the best way is by bike. Though Tuscany is rather hilly, it is a sublime way to soak in your surroundings at your (somewhat) leisure. Italian drivers are extremely considerate to cyclists, with cycling a national sport in Italy, so don’t be alarmed by all the beeps and horns as you pedal away – drivers are just letting you know that they’re there. You can do lovely day trips from central Florence which include a winery tour, wine-tasting and lunch – check out www.ibikeflorence.com/index.php for details.

After all that hard work on the bike, an Italian feast is in order. I had some amazing food in Florence, but the stand out was Za-Za Trattoria (www.trattoriazaza.it). It always seemed to be packed but the

night we ventured in they squeezed us in no problem. Florentine delicacies include massive sizzling steaks served for two, or spaghetti alla carbonara with wild boar instead of the usual bacon, all washed down with Chianti Classico. And after all that uphill cycling, some tiramisu or torta di ricotta (Italian cheesecake) to finish off is almost compulsory.

To really experience the magic of Florence, be sure to visit Ponte Vecchio bridge just before sunset. I was told that the butchers of Florence once peddled their wares on this bridge, but at the end of the day they would throw all the left-overs into the river below, creating what must have been an ungodly smell. In 1539 the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand I de’ Medici, decided that this really wasn’t contributing to the ambience of such a lovely location. The butchers were ousted, and replaced with jewellers, a much more luxurious alternative.

The Ponte Vecchio bridge was the only bridge in Florence not to be destroyed by the Germans during their World War II retreat in 1944, and rumour has it that this was because of Hitler’s specific command for it to remain. Whatever the reason, once you’ve watched the sun go down over the Arno, you’ll be so very glad that the bridge did survive.

I’ll leave you with one final word about Florence. Gelato. I made it my mission to have a gelato a day while in Italy, and I’m proud to say that not only did I complete this mission, some days I even managed two.

Though I hardly made a dent in the flavours on offer, one Florentine specialty you should try is pine nut gelato, it’s curiously wonderful, and will leave you wanting more.

Just like Florence herself.

A ruck formed from which Saracens earned a penalty and regained the lead thanks to Farrell’s pinpoint boot.

The scoreline continued to see saw with a scrum penalty and another three points to Ruan Pienaar to make it 6-6.

Unfortunately for Ulster, their habit of conceding following a score continued when the ball

was passed into touch off the restart, putting them straight on the back foot.

Saracens won the ball off the lineout and set up one of their trademark rolling mauls, which took them over the line and gave Brendan Venter’s men the opening try of the game, scored by flanker Will Fraser.

Farrell added the extras and was on hand shortly thereafter

to stretch the lead to 10 points, which is how the scoreline stayed up to half time.

Aimless kicking marked the opening second-half exchanges between the teams and it was almost Ulster to change that with a midfield break, but they were penalised for crossing, so it was Saracens to score the first points of the half with another Farrell penalty in the 47th minute.

Saracens held onto their 13 point lead until the 57th minute, where an Ulster penalty narrowed the gap slightly before Ulster predictably conceded moments later to restore the 13 point margin.

In the 63rd minute the result was all but sealed for the Men in Black when Brad Barritt delivered a deft inside pass to Chris Ashton who stepped and

ran around the last defender for a try to give Saracens an 18 point lead with less than a quarter game left to play.

Ulster pulled one back with an Iain Henderson try in the 79th minute, but Saracens had done enough to book their place in the semi final.

The game takes place on the last weekend of April, and will be held at Twickenham once again.

the goal to give his team the lead. Saracens seemed to be dominant thereafter, but towards the end of the first quarter Ulster won a turnover from a ruck, and asked their hosts to defend for the next ten minutes – almost all of which took place in their own half.

They tackled with discipline, but ultimately gave an opportunity to Ruan Pienaar

Saracens hit back in perfect fashion in the shape of an effective kick chase by Brad Barritt from the restart.
