Only a few days earlier (January 6, 1783) three senior officers of

the Continental Army had presented to the Continental

Congress meeting in Philadelphia an urgent message from the

Army encamped at Newburgh, NY!

The message was that the Army stood on the verge of

open mutiny!

from a thirty-six year old graduate of Princeton, one of the longest serving chaplains of the Continental Army, Israel Evans!

A “Temple of Virtue” was to be built from the harsh conditions of this winter

encampment!

Evans had the honor of delivering the inaugural sermon!

In the cold winters of our days, the wise among us

will recognize the source of our strength always comes
