AS A FOURTH-GENERATION Japanese American who has only ever spoken English

and whose parents graduated rom Stanord, I am the epitome o the banana metaphoryel-low on the outside, white on the insideand seemingly an unlikely candidate or a major in AsianAmerican Studies However, I oen nd that regardless o how American I eel, I am reminded omy ethnicity in one way or another almost every day o my lie Perhaps this discrepancy is parto what rst inspired my interest in Asian American Studies

I will always remember one day early in elementary school when I was playing on thebars in my schools playground A boy knocked me o the bars unintentionally and was about toapologize until his riend told him, Dont apologize to her; she doesnt speak English anywayAnother experience occurred in seventh grade, when I was pulled out o class to attend a sup-port group aimed at helping Southeast Asian girls succeed in school As it turned out, girls were

chosen or the group based solely on our names in the school roster Somebody had seen myname and, unable to recognize the nationality, automatically lumped me into a group in whichI did not belong Race and ethnicity have been very relevant in my lie, and having a means tostudy these social orces in college has excited and enlightened me

Ethnic studies programs are oen accused o legitimizing me-search a scholars sel-centered desire to learn more about him or hersel While my personal experiences initially drewme to Asian American Studies, I have ound that a large part o this eld concerns how to relateto other people Through my courses, I have become more aware o cultural considerations orpatient care that will enrich my uture career as an optometrist I have learned how to be more

sensitive to others, especially with regard to their own struggles and decisions about identityI have learned to ask questions, listen and not to assume what I do not know Asian AmericanStudies courses can be relevant to anybody, because even we bananas dont live in isolation

Studying OverseasWhether you travel to Asia or Australia, spending timeimmersed in a diferent culture is one o the best waysto break ree o the Stanord Bubble and deepenyour understanding o the world

    Oxford, EnglandbyMaleeYang11

MY FIRST FEELING o excitementthat I had arrived in London didntcome when I got o the plane It just

elt like another ight arrival It didnt come whenI went through British customs, either (That justcaused me a lot o anxiety rom a baseless earthat I wouldnt be allowed into the country) Nothe exciting realization that I was actually in Eng-land rst hit at the start o the one-hour bus ride

to Oxord, when I observed that we were drivingon the wrong side o trafc!

Oxord wasnt a planned trip I had originallybeen planning to go abroad spring quarter, but

there were spaces open or winter, and I g-ured, why not? Since I didnt have any impor-tant plans or winter quarter, I thought I mightas well spend my rainy quarter in Oxord andmake it more interesting Unortunately, thisseemingly perect logic backred on me some-what in the beginning For the rst ew weeks,I was constantly reezing; I was sick, homesickand miserable But I realized that it wouldnt do

    Seoul, South KoreabyGeaKang11

HI, MY NAME IS GEA and Im re-porting or Newsweek Korea Doyou have a moment?

I stood on the bank o the Han River, one oSeouls central landmarks, with a notebookand pen in hand or scribbling down interviewnotes in Korean, ashing the most condentsmile I could muster It was a dream come true

I had never imagined mysel reporting or thepublication I had always wanted to work or, inthe city I had always wanted to work in But the

summer o 2008, right aer my reshman year,I did just that through the Bing Overseas Stud-

ies Programs Asia Internships program Whileinterning at Newsweek Korea, I got to attendpress conerences and editorial meetings andactually contribute to proessionally publishedstories

    But I jumped at this opportunity not only be-cause I could acquire invaluable work skills;

it also let me experience the country thatmy amily had called home as someone morethan a tourist I admittedly struggled to indmy ooting in the heart o Seouls businessdistrict I had to adjust to the work hierarchythat suggested I should be at my desk ear-lier than my supervisors in the morning andlater than them at night For the most part, Iwas also to eat and drink what was ordered

to mope around when I only had three monthsin Oxord It helped that everyone I metthesta, the instructors, the other Stanord stu-dents and people at the collegeswere kindand riendly I got to know the students in theStanord House better (since I knew no one be-ore going) and began to engage in my courses

more Perhaps most importantly, I began to en-joy my tutorial, a course component specic tothe Oxord study abroad program

In act, the dreaded Oxord tutorial that had sointimidated me and almost convinced me not toapply to the program eventually became one omy avorite parts about Oxord I got to study asubject that I enjoyed, and I loved that the paceo the course was set up just or me As an Eng-

lish major, I studied Renaissance Literature, andOxords rich literary culture was an additionalplus What is particularly great about the Ox-ord tutorial is that it doesnt matter what youare majoring inyou can request or a courseon any topic, whether its in public policy, com-puter science or biology

Another great aspect about Oxord is that it o-

ers so many opportunities or students to haversthand experiences when studying historicalsubjects I took an art history course, and one othe highlights was visiting countless museumswith my class to study amous original art piec-es This was my rst oray into a ormal study o

art, and I was excited to nd that I had a new-ound appreciation or Pre-Raphaelite art

I bring back rom my time abroad a sense opersonal accomplishment o knowing myselbetterand, o course, o learning to write bet-ter Despite my rough start and the cold weath-er, I look back on my experience in Oxord withonly warm eelings

In exchange or this deerence, however, I waswell taken care o A very tangible sense ocloseness prevailed and, looking back, I missthat My emale supervisors would link armswith me as they pulled me into crowded restau-rants, and my male supervisors would chucklebenignly as I ushed red with embarrassmenttaking multiple tries to complete the simple

task o addressing an envelopebecause Ididnt know that Koreas address ormatting isthe reverse o Americas

As with all encounters, a lot o luck is at playwith working abroad Who knows what per-sonalities you will be working with, what proj-ects will be available and what global politicalsituation you will ace Aer all, you could even

nd yoursel in the middle o protests againstAmerican bee imports, like I did

Regardless, I would do it again in a heartbeatWorking in Seoul opened my eyes to what liesbeyond the comorts o Palm Drive and howI as a Korean American who has grown up inthe United States can t into the picture ocross-cultural dialogue Not only am I morewell-rounded as a result, but I also know thatI can always count on having someone to take

me out to lunch when I visit Korea In act, Ihope to work in Seoul again aer graduatingrom Stanord

Although I was lucky enough to meet the Ko-rean language requirement or my internship, many programs do not have any prerequisitesSo, whether you are looking to explore yourroots, check out a dream job or just immerse

yoursel in a new place, pack your bags andhead out You will be so glad you did

THROUGHOUT my Stan-ord career, I have learnednever to settle I reused

to major in science to get into medical schoolwhen I wanted to study anthropology I choseto see the world instead o working in a labover the summer Now, two o my most amazingexperiences were in Oaxaca, Mexico, where Istudied healthcare access or poor indigenousamilies, and in Nairobi, Kenya, where I report-ed on malaria eradication eorts By pursuingopportunities that dont usually all within mymajor or Stanords available programs, I havegrown as a person and can proudly say that Ihave no regrets

I am a pre-med who recently switched majors

rom Anthropology to Human Biology, but myAnthropology background has made me amore viable candidate or programs that seekto integrate diverse elds in approaching com-plex issues In this connection, many depart-ments encourage going abroad as a crucial parto their curriculum, and Stanord aculty are en-thusiastic about advising students You can ap-ply to pre-structured programs or design your

own, as almost any abroad experience can beramed as independent research

Time overseas provides rst-hand experienceoutside the classroom Mexico and Kenyaopened my eyes to the realities o poverty andat times made me eel helpless Simultaneously,I became less nave about the issues I am pas-sionate aboutexpanding healthcare accessand raising awareness about neglected inec-

tious diseasesand more determined to take

action I gained a personal connection as well;shadowing Mexican surgeons serving poor vil-lagers conrmed my desire to become a phy-sician, and interviewing political and economicleaders in Kenya has inspired my interest inhealth policy I can now explain exactly why Icare deeply about medicine, what I can contrib-

ute, and what I can still learn In addition, I ammore active on campus in student-initiated e-orts to draw attention to global health

While Stanords quarter-long abroad programshave limited location choices, summer optionsare available in nearly every locale Most areusually our to six weeks long, leaving room ormore than one per summer! Never limit your-sel to what Stanord provideswith the Inter-net, it is easier than ever to nd other opportu-nities I went to Mexico through Stanords BingOverseas Studies Program, but I went to Kenyaby entering a national collegiate essay contestsponsored by the NGO Malaria No More I wasortunate to win, and my prize was a trip to the2009 Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Pan-Ari-can Conerence, where I witnessed the malariaepidemic and used social media to educate in-

    ternational audiences

It seems saer to stick with what you alreadyknow or what others have done in the past Butpushing yoursel outside your comort zoneand reusing to settle or anything less thanwhat you are passionate about will leave youwith no regrets You will have made yoursel animmensely more interesting and desirable job

DURING SPRING BREAK o thisyear, I had the opportunity to partic-ipate in the Asian American Issues

Alternative Spring Break program We visitedBay Area and Los Angeles nonprot organiza-tions that are concerned with issues acing theAsian American community Prior to the Direct-ed Reading course required or the class, I hadonly been briey exposed to stereotypes anddiscrimination, and I had never even heard o is-

sues like environmental justice, workers rights, and the academic inequity aced by SoutheastAsian Americans But aer completing the trip, the issues became real I saw a room smallerthan my own dorm room in which an entire am-ily o seven might live I met a man living in a citywhere elementary school children know thedrill or an unexpected chemical spill I hearda story about a mother who was working 105

hours a week and had not been paid in monthsThe experience taught me that race, culture, and socioeconomic status are so oen catalystsor discrimination and barriers to air living andworking conditions Beore this ASB trip, I wasalready involved in the Asian American commu-nity But I did not have the same kind o passionor these activities as I do now I have learnedhow important it is to spread awareness aboutAsian American issues and culture and to pro-mote positive change in the API community

Grants & FellowshipsDesigning your own research project, applying or a grant, and participat-ing in a public service ellowship lets you pursue your interests ull-time!

    [Re]searching or community goodbyHenryTsai10

IN PICKING a topic to pursue or independent research, it was important tome that my research would benet marginalized communities I consulted with

several campus mentors, such as Proessor Gordon Chang o Asian Ameri-can Studies, and decided to study a population o Vietnamese Americans whowere displaced by Hurricane Katrina At the time, this New Orleans communityremained virtually invisible in the ervent national dialogue on Katrina, so I sawthat I could contribute in recording stories or policy makers, scholars and per-haps even a wider audienceWith the support o my proessors, I applied to Stanord grants I ound on theUndergraduate Advising and Research (UAR) website These grants allowedme to ocus on my research ull-time during the summer and sent me on trips

to conduct my interviews and eld observations Having the backing o Stanord also acilitated my researchprocess, as individuals and organizations were probably more responsive to my requests or their timeHowever, just because I was well-unded does not mean that my project was without challenges I became in-credibly invested precisely because I was working so closely with my respondents Yet, while this connectionto the community members gave me much drive to produce my best work, it also made me struggle deeplywith the act i I were to devote less o my time and resources to research and instead ocused on working toimprove their living conditions, I could produce immediate tangible benets or my interviewees My advisorshelped me see that the dividends or the community would be reaped over the long run and aect a broaderset o people, and that is the reason why community research is important

Outside the community-specic aspects o my work, the process o writing a thesis has been enlighteningThis extended academic eort gave me a taste o what graduate school might entail In addition, becauseo its relative scale compared to that o any other academic work I have attempted, writing a thesis has alsotaught me much about my working style, my priorities and my passions In the end, as much as this project hasbeen a challenge, it has been incredibly rewarding

Refections on my path so ar:My Summer as a Spirituality, Service, and Social Change Fellow

byStephanieHironaka12I NEVER EXPECTED that a nal research paper or PWR during my rstquarter at Stanord would open so many doors Aer researching non-prots in the Tenderloin district o San Francisco or my paper, I elt therewas more I could do than just write about the issuesI could show solidar-ity by serving these communities I looked to the Haas Center or oppor-tunities and soon discovered the Spirituality, Service and Social ChangeHaas Summer Fellowship I applied because it would allow me to workdirectly with the Tenderloin community through a spiritually afliated or-ganization

I was ortunate to receive the ellowship, but to my surprise, I was placedwith the Shinnyo-en Foundation (SEF), a nonprot oundation near San

Franciscos Financial District Working with SEF was a dierent service experience rom what I originallyconceived, as the Foundation supports programs, which engage and inspire youth in meaningul serviceMany o my responsibilities were internship-like, such as organizing and copying documents, but never-theless, the ellowship provided a vital opportunity to reect and absorb SEFs philosophy

The Foundations philosophy is centered on its Six Billion Paths to Peace initiativea belie that everyperson can uncover his or her path to peace through service During my work, the Foundation encour-aged me to reect on the role o service in my liehow amily history, past experiences and the people

that surround me have shaped my values and identity Also at the core o its philosophy, the Foundationteaches that any act o servicewhether it be baking cookies or riends or volunteering at a ood bankcan spread ripples o peace throughout the world While helping develop a reection guide during mytime at SEF, I also learned that bringing my passions and strengths into my daily lie and vocation is oneway that service can become meaningul to me These lessons cultivated a hope and understanding thatin the present and in the uture, I can positively impact the world by acting on my values and pursuingmy passions

In the end, my summer was not so much about oering direct service to a community, but about nur-turing in me a spirit o service My path to peace will continue to evolve, but right now I believe that

exploring and remaining open to new opportunities will aord me the most meaningul impact in theuture Thankully, Stanord oers many o these wonderul opportunitiesand in times when I amlucky to have doors open or me, it is my responsibility to step through the threshold and be willingto grow
