FRI 14 Josh Kyle & Sam Keevers ‘Songs of Friends’Voice and piano pared back to convey a depth of emotion and beauty. Melodies that are intriguing, sometimes complex sometimes simple. These are the key elements of collaboration between Josh Kyle and Sam Keevers. This performance is a homage to the depth of talent amongst Australian composers admired by Josh including Kristin Berardi, Sam Keevers, Daniel Gassin, Sean Coffin and more.

SAT 15 Warwick Alder’s The Jazznostics

The Jazzgnostics, an exciting new project by Warwick Alder, will present original music from the jazz spectrum and its fringes. The players include leaders and newer members of the Sydney jazz scene playing freewheeling jazz based around improvisation of the past and present.

FRI 21 The Bright Sparks Quintet feat. Ronny FerellaThis quintet led by guitarist/composer Jess Green plays with rhythms that put joie de vivre into each song. Featuring long-time collaborator Ronny Ferella, this ensemble is a fun-filled assortment of sounds, with a fresh take on Jazz flavoured by Jess’ love for African music and Indie Rock.

SAT 22 Matt McMahon TrioWinner of many prestigious awards, including the Freedman and National Jazz Awards, Matt McMahon is a leading Australian pianist/composer whose masterful playing captures audiences and critics alike. For almost 15 years, the Matt McMahon Trio has been honing their connectivity to create a depth of musicality and astounding synergy.

SUN 23 Freedman New Jazz Presents Christopher Hale’s Sylvan Coda @The Basement

A melange of percussion, voice and guitar create an epic and thrilling live concert event, Christopher Hale’s Sylvan Coda is a must see. From Flamenco and Afro-Cuban music emerges an exquisite and fearlessly original performance. Featuring an 8-piece ensemble which includes Johnny Tedesco’s striking Flamenco dancing, powerful and passionate guitar playing and a stunning vocal chorus led by jazz luminary Gian Slater.

FRI 28 Jackson Harrison Trio Sintering album launch

The Jackson Harrison Trio paints pictures of astonishing abstract art on its debut disc Land Tides, splashing fiery colors onto backgrounds that are often stark but always stunning. All About Jazz (USA)

After the critical acclaim of his first album, National Jazz award winner Jackson Harrison releases his long awaited second album Sintering on the prestigious Swiss label Hat Hut Records.

SAT 29 The Grey Wing Trio album launch

Weaving intricate improvisations and utopian-esk melodies, the Grey Wing Trio will be performing pieces from their new album which is unveiled tonight at SIMA. Together they explore open densities and grooves, with heavy doses of folk and 20th century music in their rapturous interactive style.

DECEMBERFRI 05 Gary Daley The Sanctuary Project album launch

Genre-hopping work which takes its ideas from a sound world created by particular instruments. The Sanctuary Project is the personal response of composer and pianist Gary Daley’s to two contrasting events, that of his mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and the birth of his granddaughter which provided the stimulus for this moving and rich six-movement piece.

FRI 10 Matt KeeganDon’t miss Matt Keegan, Freedman award winner and much sought after saxophonist’s return to the stage as a band leader after a three year hiatus. SAT 11 Gian Slater Trio (VIC) Still Still album launch

Music of delicacy and purity, accompanied by virtuosic and unique instrumental approaches which move seamlessly between musical worlds

Gian Slater launches her critically acclaimed album Still Still featuring Brother Nathan and long-time collaborator Christopher Hale. Influenced by their immersion in choro, flamenco, tango and jazz, they have composed music that weaves spells.

If you haven’t heard Steve’s playing, you are missing one of our finest young players. Runner up at last years National jazz awards, ‘Barry’s compositions and playing display a rare combination of melodic accessibility with a sophisticated level of musical inventiveness. His solos flow expertly in unexpected, yet logical and highly pleasing directions’ John McBeath, The Australian.

SAT 25 Casey Golden Trio

This project performed by some of Australia’s most respected musicians gives new voice to the spirit of freedom in Komeda’s music.

Lisa Parrot Quartet (NY)

Beautifully round and mellow, gliding from smooth riffs to jagged bursts, New York-based Australian alto and baritone saxophonist Lisa Parrot is arguably one of Australia’s most successful musical expats. Since relocating to New York 20 years ago, her career has gone from strength to strength. This exclusive Sydney performance has her teaming up with long time musicial buddies for what we know will be a night of unforgettable music.

Palacio de la Rumba Big Band feat. Roman Justo Pelladito (CUBA)

Exuberant, passionate with fire and finesse. Gai Bryant with special guest artist, percussionist Roman Justo Pelladito and her 18 piece big band features compositions based on traditional Cuban folkloric music styles: rumba, danzon, bolero and tonada. It’s jazz that improvises and takes on other styles big band with a flavour of Cuba.
