1 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL)

Establishing the station.

2 INT. QUARK'S

ODO is reading QUARK the riot act over the NEW BARSTOOLS he's installed at the bar. MORN is perched precariously on one of the new backless stools. JAKE is nearby enjoying the scene playing itself out.

ODO(re: barstools) You'll have to remove them.

QUARK Do you know how much they cost?

ODO No, and I can't say that I'm interested in learning. Station regulation twenty-five-sixty-two, paragraph four: "All furniture intended for use on the Promenade must not pose a danger to public safety."

QUARK What danger?

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 2.

2 CONTINUED:

ODO Without a back on that stool, Morn could tumble off his perch at any moment, shattering his upper vertebrae or puncturing three or four of his lungs.

Morn doesn't like the sound of that. He begins to get up, but Quark pushes him back down on the stool.

QUARK Nonsense.

Quark grabs Morn by the shoulders and shakes him a little.

QUARK His body weight is perfectly distributed across the seat.

Quark twirls Morn on the stool so he faces the dabo table.

QUARK He's also better able to enjoy the view of our lovely dabo girls than he was before. And should he require another drink...

Quark twirls him back to face the bar.

QUARK... he need only spin back.

ODO Which points out another danger -- vertigo.

QUARK This isn't going to give anyone vertigo...

He gives Morn a shove and Morn begins spinning.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 3.

2 CONTINUED:(2)

ODO Your appeal has been heard and rejected. I want the barstools removed by the end of the day.

Odo moves off toward the dabo table and Quark follows him. Morn continues to spin on his stool and Jake finally has to stop him.

ODO Now... it's come to my attention that your dabo wheel is in violation of station regulation forty-seven-twenty-one, which states --

KIRA' S VOICE Odo?

They turn to see that KIRA has just ENTERED the bar. Upon seeing her, Odo's entire attitude changes. The hard-nosed inspector vanishes and the happy lover appears.

KIRA Are you busy?

ODO(without missing a beat) Not at all.

KIRAThen can I interest you in lunch?

ODO Where shall we go?

They head for the door and Odo never looks back.

KIRA I was thinking about the Klingon restaurant. I haven't been there in ages and I have this craving for broiled Krada legs...

Kira and Odo EXIT. Quark sits on a barstool and looks after them with a thoughtful expression. Jake comes over to him.

JAKE Too bad about the barstools. I kinda liked them.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 4.

2 CONTINUED:(3)

QUARK Hm.(beat) Did you notice how he changed the minute she walked in the room?

JAKE(shrugs) They're in love.

QUARK And what's love?(Jake starts to answer) Love... is a distraction. And a distracted policeman is... ?

Jake has no idea.

QUARK An opportunity.

Quark smiles to himself and spins himself around on his stool, a new scheme already forming in his mind.

3 EXT. SPACE - THE DEFIANT (OPTICAL)

The ship at warp.

SISKO (V.O.) Captain's Log: Stardate xxxxx.x With the safe arrival of convoy PQ-One in the Vegan System, our escort duties are now complete and I've set course for home.

4 INT. DEFIANT - MESS HALL

SISKO is sitting at a table with a cup of coffee and reading a PADD. The mood in the Mess Hall is subdued, quiet -- everyone on the ship is tired and weary after a long mission. KASIDY YATES ENTERS carrying another PADD. She sits down with Sisko and hands him the PADD.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 5.

4 CONTINUED:

KASIDY (re: PADD). My first, and hopefully last, mission report for Starfleet Command.

Sisko looks it over. Kasidy's tired too, but unlike Sisko, she hasn't internalized the stress and tension of the past few weeks. She can relax and Sisko can't.

KASIDY You know, when I agreed to be convoy liaison officer, I thought, "Sure. Why not? I know most of the freighter captains in the convoy -- should be a piece of cake." I didn't know I'd be making twenty log entries a day and filling out formal reports every night.

SISKOWell, it looks like you did a pretty good job.

BASHIR ENTERS in the b.g., carrying two PADDS, and heads for the replicator.

KASIDYIf you're going to do something, do it right -- that's what my father used to say.

SISKOEvery father says that. Even I say that.

KASIDY That's why you're a good parent -- you know all the cliches by heart.

Sisko gives her a small smile, but that's all. He's in "captain" mode on the Defiant -- doesn't want to talk about family or to let down his guard in any way. He keeps reading her report.

Kasidy looks up as Bashir, now carrying his own coffee, passes by their table.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 6.

4 CONTINUED:(2)

KASIDY Well, hello stranger. Haven't seen you in days.

Bashir hands a PADD to Sisko.

BASHIR(re: PADD) I've been filling out reports for Starfleet Medical.

KASIDY I knew there was a reason I didn't join Starfleet -- I couldn't do all this paperwork.

BASHIR Smart woman.

Bashir does not want to stay and chat. He smiles at her, then keeps going to an empty table on the other side of the room.

KASIDY I remember a time when you couldn't get him to shut up.

SISKO(still reading) I think I like him better this way.

KASIDY That's mean.

SISKOI'm just kidding.

KASIDY No, you're not.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 7.

4 CONTINUED:(3)

WORF'S COM VOICE Bridge to Captain Sisko.

SISKO(to com) Sisko here.

WORF'S COM VOICE Sir, can you come to the bridge? We've picked up a distress call.

Sisko reacts -- this is the last thing he wants to deal with. At his own table, Bashir reacts with resignation and fatigue.

SISKO(reluctant) On my way.

He gets up and heads for the EXIT.

CUT TO:

5 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE

O'BRIEN is sitting at a console, looking at some technical information as WORF looks on. Sisko ENTERS and goes to them.

WORF We've been unable to establish two-way communication so far, but we have determined that the signal is coming from somewhere in the Rutharian Sector.

SISKOLet's hear it.

O'Brien hits a control and we hear the voice of CAPTAIN LISA CUSAK. There's some STATIC and FRITZING on the com channel.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 8.

5 CONTINUED:

LISA'S VOICE(filled with static) --and Commander Gatsby's dead too. I didn't see any other escape pods leave before the ship was destroyed so I may be the only survivor. My escape pod was torn open on impact and the rain is pouring in. I'll take the radio and a survival kit with me, but the environmental suits were damaged in the crash, so I'll have to rough it. This is an L-class world and the atmosphere is barely breathable out there.(beat) Repeat: This is a general distress call. I am a citizen of the United Federation of Planets and a Starfleet officer. If you can hear me, please respond. My government will reward you for any assistance you can offer.(beat) And most of all, you will be my personal heroes.

Sisko signals for O'Brien to cut off the sound. O'Brien hits a control. Sisko rubs his eyes for a moment and lets this sink in.

SISKO(to Worf) How long will it take us to reach her?

WORFAt maximum warp... six days.

SISKOAny other ships closer to that sector?

WORFNo, sir.

That settles it. Sisko lets out a long breath.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - TEASER 9.

5 CONTINUED:(2)

SISKO Mister Worf.... turn us around and set course for the Rutharian Sector.

WORFAye, sir.

Worf moves to the Command chair.

SISKO Chief, I want you to establish a two-way com link with that woman. (beat) And when you do, tell her... her heroes are on the way.

Sisko moves off as O'Brien goes to work...

O'Brien is working at a console with an open panel. The monitor shows a complex display of technical information, graphs, and subspace schematics. Lisa's voice can be heard over the speakers as he works.

SISKO (V.O.) (continuing)... but so far, Chief O'Brien has been unable to establish two-way communications.

LISA'S VOICE... the rain has stopped. I guess that's a good sign. At least I won't have to swim out of here. (beat) Now if the sun would just come out. Or maybe the sun doesn't come out on this planet.

8 INT. QUARK'S

A busy day. Quark is working and Jake is sitting at the bar, writing on a PADD. Odo ENTERS and notes that the old barstools are back in place.

QUARK(re: barstools) I hope you're satisfied. I'm sure nothing gives you more pleasure than stifling my creativity.

ODO Only you would consider barstools to be a form of artistic expression.

QUARK Oh yeah? Well, let's see how creative you are. Have you picked out the major's gift yet?

ODO Gift?

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT ONE 14.

8 CONTINUED:

QUARKFor this Saturday.(beat)You do know what Saturday is,right?

ODOSaturday?

QUARKYes...

Odo thinks for a moment, isn't sure what he's getting at.

QUARK(exasperated)It's the one-month anniversary ofyour first date with Major Kira.

ODOOh. I suppose it is.

QUARKAnd you haven't picked out a gift.

ODOWhy should I?

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT ONE 15.

8 CONTINUED:(2)

QUARK(to Jake) The man's experienced unrequited love for the better part of three years and now that he finally has her, he wants to know why he should celebrate their anniversary.

ODO Whatever you're trying to sell me, it won't work.

QUARK You think I'm going to get involved? No, thank you. The last thing I want to deal with is a panicked lover scrambling to find a present at the last minute. There's a whole Promenade of shopkeepers out there if you want to buy a gift.

Quark goes back to work and ignores him.

ODO (to Jake, derisive) A one-month anniversary gift. Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous?

Actually, it doesn't sound so ridiculous to Jake and his expression is noncommittal, which Odo reads as a silent accusation.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT ONE 16.

8 CONTINUED:(3)

Not so sure of himself anymore, Odo EXITS to the Promenade. As soon as he's out the door, Quark turns around to watch him through the window. Jake moves over to watch as well.

9 THROUGH THE WINDOW

we see Odo walk down the Promenade... then pause... seems to hesitate... then he goes to a shop and begins examining the wares, looking for a gift.

10 RESUME QUARK & JAKE

Quark smiles to himself at the sight.

JAKE Okay... so now you've got him looking for a gift. What're you up to?

QUARKI tell you, you write it down, the next thing I know I'm in a holding cell.

JAKE I won't write a word, I promise. This is just... character research.

QUARKRight.

Quark goes back to work, but Jake won't let it go and decides to try another tack.

JAKE Quark, listen... I've been working on a crime novel. But I've hit a wall in my writing. It's not... truthful anymore. It's phony. Artificial. (beat) I'm having trouble creating real, flesh-and-blood characters. Especially nefarious ones. If you'd let me just watch and listen as you pull off...

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT ONE 16A.

10 CONTINUED:

JAKE (Cont'd)... whatever it is you're going to pull off... it could really help me out.(beat) You could give me insight. I could even model my lead villain after you.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT ONE 17.

10 CONTINUED:(2)

Quark leans across the bar and looks at Jake for a moment.

QUARK Lesson number one: no one involved in an "extralegal" activity wants to think of themselves as nefarious.

JAKE Sorry.

QUARKI'm a businessman. Now if you're interested in learning about my business... I suppose that could be arranged.

JAKE Great.

QUARKBut nothing you see or hear turns up in print. And none of it gets back to your father. Understand?

JAKE Completely. So -- tell me about the scam.(off his look) I mean, the plan.

QUARKLet's just say that the Constable's one month anniversary is going to be a very special occasion. For the major and for my bank account.

Off Quark's pleased look...

12 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM

A few minutes later. O'Brien and Kasidy have been joined by Sisko and Bashir.

LISA'S VOICE My name's Lisa Cusak. Until a couple of days ago, I was the commanding officer of the Olympia.

SISKOThe Olympia...

LISA'S VOICE We left the Federation over eight years ago for a long-range exploration of the Beta Quadrant.

They exchange a look.

SISKO What happened to your ship, captain?

LISA'S VOICE(bitter)We were... finally heading home, if you can believe that. But then we picked up some strange energy readings in a nearby star system, and... I decided to stop and investigate.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 21.

12 CONTINUED:

LISA'S VOICE (Cont'd) (beat) We found an energy barrier around the fourth planet that was unlike anything we'd ever seen. When we probed it with our scanners, it triggered a quantum reaction. (grim) There was an enormous surge of metrion radiation that disabled our engines. The next thing I knew, we were spiraling in toward the surface. I gave the order to abandon ship and the last thing I remember is a console exploding in my face.

There's a quiet beat.

LISA'S VOICE I woke up in an escape pod on the surface and I've spent the last day and a half sitting in this cave trying to raise someone on subspace.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 21A.

12 CONTINUED:(2)

BASHIR Captain, I'm Doctor Bashir, chief medical officer. Your message said that you're on a L-class planet. Are you certain?

LISA'S VOICE Positive. And to answer your nextquestion, yes I've been giving myself fifteen cc's of triox every four hours to compensate for the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Just like it says in my medical tricorder.

BASHIRHow much triox do you have left?

LISA'S VOICEOne hundred and fifty milliliters.

Bashir reacts -- that's not good.

BASHIR(to com) Captain, I want you to decrease the dosage to eight cc's every six hours. We'll have to stretch your supply as long as possible.

KASIDY What happens when she runs out of the drug?

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 21B.

12 CONTINUED:(3)

LISA'S VOICE Yeah, what happens when the hypo goes dry?

BASHIR (to com) You'll begin to experience the effects of hypoxia. But before that happens, the triox compound will have strengthened your cardio-pulmonary system, allowing you to better withstand the effects.

LISA'S VOICE "Better withstand the effects." In other words, I'm going to be gasping for air and turning different shades of blue by the time you get here.

BASHIR I'm... afraid so.

LISA'S VOICE Thanks for brightening my day.

KASIDY I wish there was something else we could do.

LISA'S VOICE There is, actually. I can't sleep -- I think the injections are keeping me awake -- and I haven't had anyone to talk to for two days.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 21C.

12 CONTINUED:(4)

SISKO I think we can help you there. I'll have one of my officers stay on the com channel with you at all times.

LISA'S VOICE (wry) And order them to enjoy it, too.

SISKODone.

LISA'S VOICE So who's first?

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 22.

12 CONTINUED:(5)

SISKO I think I better start. A lot of things have happened since you left, captain...

13 INT. DEFIANT - READY ROOM (OPTICAL)

Sisko is talking to Lisa on the com.

SISKO Second Fleet has hit the Dominion forces occupying Betazed three times in the last month. But they're still bringing in more reinforcements and fortifying their positions on the surface so--

LISA'S VOICE Okay, that's it. No more war news. You're depressing me.

SISKO Sorry.

LISA'S VOICE No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for you and me and everyone in the Federation... I can't believe we're at war. (beat) Let's... change the subject. How about some good news. Tell me there's still something to look forward to when I get home. Tell me people still fall in love and get married and raise families.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 23.

13 CONTINUED:

SISKO They do.

LISA'S VOICE Good.(beat) What about you? Are you married?

SISKO

No.

LISA'S VOICE Seeing anyone? I hate to pry, but I'd like to think that there's still something positive in the life of a starship captain these days.

SISKOI... am seeing someone.

LISA'S VOICE Now we're talking. Tell me about her. What's her name?

SISKO(brusque) Kasidy Yates.

LISA'S VOICE Kasidy? Is she the same Kasidy I spoke to earlier?

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 24.

13 CONTINUED:(2)

SISKOThat's her.

LISA'S VOICE She one of your officers?

SISKONo. Civilian. Freighter captain.

LISA'S VOICE Uh, oh. Sounds like you're having problems.

SISKO(surprised) What makes you say that?

LISA'S VOICE There's no joy in that voice of yours, Ben. In fact, the tension level went up when you said her name. You sounded more relaxed when you were telling me about the war.

Sisko is a little taken aback and doesn't say anything for a long beat.

LISA'S VOICE You still there?

SISKOYes. You just... caught me alittle off-guard.

LISA'S VOICE I can tell.(beat)You know, back when I was a juniorofficer, I dated a civilian forsix years. Want to hear about it?(quickly) Sure you do. Why? Because it's a funny story and one of us needs to cheer up.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 25.

13 CONTINUED:(3)

LISA'S VOICE (Cont'd) So -- we met on Andor. I was assigned to the Federation Embassy as an attache and he was working in the Andorian Agricultural Ministry. At first, I didn't want anything to do with him -- he kept pointing his antennae at me whenever I walked through his office and I found that sort of rude...

15 INT. QUARK'S

Quark is working behind the bar and Jake is sitting on one of the stools.

JAKE So let me get this straight -- you have fifteen cases of stolen Denevan crystals...

QUARKAllegedly stolen.

JAKE... allegedly stolen crystals hidden somewhere down in Cargo Bay Three. And you're planning to sell them to a Nausicaan friend of yours -- who just happens to be a known criminal...

QUARKAlleged criminal.

JAKE So, how are you going to get an "alleged" criminal onto the station and deliver the "allegedly" stolen goods to him without Odo getting wind of it? And what does any of this have to do with his anniversary?

Odo ENTERS the bar, carrying a small box.

QUARKWatch and learn..

Quark busies himself at the bar as Odo approaches. Odo is a little uncomfortable with this entire anniversary thing.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 28.

15 CONTINUED:

ODO Well. This is it.

Beat.

QUARK Can I see it?

Odo opens it after a beat. Inside the box is a JEWELED NECKLACE.

QUARK Very nice. I'm sure the major will love it.

Odo smiles just a little and closes the box. Quark goes back to work.

QUARK So how're going to give it to her?(off his look) What sort of evening do you have planned?

ODOI... don't have anything planned.

Quark shakes his head in disgust.

QUARK Fortunately for you, there's still time.(pulls out a tray of isolinear rods) Pick one.

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT TWO 29.

15 CONTINUED:(2)

ODO A holosuite program?

QUARKIt's your anniversary. You have to do something special.

ODOI bought her a gift.

QUARKHave it your way.

He takes the tray away.

QUARK Of course, if it was me... and I'd found true love after a lifetime of searching... every month would be worth celebrating.

Beat.

ODO Let me see those programs.

Quark hands him the holosuite programs and then heads toward the stairs. As he climbs up toward the second level, Quark gives Jake a smug look.

QUARK Looks like the constable's going to be busy Saturday night. I guess that means he won't be following me around the station... or watching the airlocks for wanted criminals... or monitoring the cargo bays for illegal transactions.

JAKE He has deputies.

QUARKDeputies I can handle. With Odo out of the way... my biggest problem will be deciding what to do with all the money I'm about to make...

Beat.

LISA'S VOICE(getting suspicious) Really?

BASHIRUh-huh.

LISA'S VOICE You know, doctor... I'm starting to think that maybe, just maybe you're not really paying attention to-- wait a minute. What's that?(beat, then alarmed) There's something moving out there.(beat) It's getting closer.

Continuous from Act Two. Bashir is staring at the console in disbelief.

BASHIR Captain Cusak can you hear me!

A horrible GRINDING and CRUNCHING SOUND comes over the com line.

BASHIR Hello? Hello? (beat) My God...

A long beat and then a DEEP HEAVY VOICE answers him.

DEEP VOICE She's... gone.

BASHIRWho is this? What have you done?

DEEP VOICE I have... eaten her.

Bashir is shocked... then takes a step back. That can't be right.

BASHIR What?

DEEP VOICE I've eaten her! What difference does it make to you? You weren't even listening to her!

Bashir suddenly realizes that he's been had. He sits down at the console with a rueful smile.

BASHIRYou're right, you're absolutely right. I don't know what I was thinking. You now have my full attention.

LISA'S VOICE Well, I've got news for you, Doc -- I'm all talked out. It's time for you to cheer up one of your patients and take her mind off her impending doom.

BASHIRYou're not doomed.

LISA'S VOICE I feel better already. See how easy that was? Now keep going.

BASHIR Uh... what should I talk about?

LISA'S VOICE How did they let you out of medical school with this kind of bedside manner? Are you sure you're a doctor?

BASHIRGraduated second in my class.

That's not good.

LISA'S VOICE If you're about to deliver more bad news, I'd just as soon you kept it to yourself. (beat) Besides, you're just trying to change the subject. You were about to impress me with amazing tales of your brilliant academic career at medical school.

ODOBook us four hours beginning at twenty-one hundred, Sunday night.

QUARK You mean Saturday.

ODO No, I mean Sunday.

QUARKBut Saturday is the anniversary of your first date.

ODOYes, but our first date ended badly. It's not something I want to commemorate, so I've decided to celebrate the anniversary of our first kiss.

This totally screws up Quark's plans. A note of panic begins to creep into his voice.

QUARK My partner. I can't... get him on the channel. He's changed his com system protocols.

JAKE(shocked) Already? You just talked to him.

QUARK (stunned) He's a wanted man, Jake. He has to be very careful about how often he uses subspace... the authorities might try to... trace his signal. (beat) I don't have any way of contacting him before he gets here Saturday night.

Or maybe I'm different.(beat) I have this sense of... growing isolation... I see people every day, talk to them, laugh with them, but... part of me is always saying, "They may not be here tomorrow, Miles. Don't get too close... "(beat) I'm... I'm sorry. LISA'S VOICE Forget about me. You're the one who needs cheering up.

O'BRIENNow there's a sad state of affairs.

LISA'S VOICE Look, you've seen a lot of combat in the last year -- that's a heavy burden to carry around.

O'BRIEN (wry) You sure you're a captain and not a counselor?

LISA'S VOICE Oh, I'm sure. I'll let you in on a little secret, Miles... I dislike the whole concept of a ship's counselor.

O'BRIEN (surprised) Me too. I mean, I like some of them personally, but...

LISA'S VOICE Sometimes all you need are good friends.

O'BRIENExactly.

LISA'S VOICE So where are they?

O'BRIEN Excuse me?

LISA'S VOICE Where are your friends, Miles? Why aren't they helping you through this?

O'BRIENI... haven't spoken to them about any of this. We just don't... talk about that kind of thing.

BASHIRI was able to catch up on my paperwork this afternoon, thank you very much.

LISA'S VOICE Let me guess -- thanks to your amazing, genetically engineered brain, you not only did your work, you did the work of ten other doctors at the same time.

BASHIR

Well, you've answered my next question, which was going to be "How are you feeling?" I can see that you're in your usual acerbic good mood.

BASHIR So did I. But it appears that the last vial of triox was tainted somehow -- probably in the crash.

Sisko, Worf, Bashir and O'Brien are discussing the problem.

BASHIR We need more speed.

O'BRIENSpeed's not the problem. I could increase the warp plasma ninety-seven gigahertz. That would increase our velocity to warp nine point five and save us almost a full day.

WORF. But the problem on the Defiant is how to maintain structural integrity when we go above warp nine.

O'BRIENExactly. The ship literally starts tearing herself apart at those speeds.

SISKOIs there any way of strengthening the structural integrity field?

O'BRIENNot without bleeding power from some other system.

SISKO Such as?

WORF(to Sisko) We should not take the risk.

SISKO(tense)We're... increasing speed. Thecaptain's condition is worsening.

KASIDYI see. Is there anything I can do?

SISKOI don't think so.

LISA'S VOICE(hoarse) Trust me Ben, I'd much rather be worrying about your love life than about my own problems right now.

She begins coughing for a long beat.

SISKO When Kasidy came to the bridge last night, all I wanted her to do was leave. And I couldn't begin to tell you why.

LISA'S VOICE She doesn't belong there Ben, that's why. She doesn't belong in that part of your life and you know it.(beat)Off-duty, I'm sure Kasidy isexactly what you need.

SISKO She was our convoy liaison officer on our last mission, and a damned good one...

LISA'S VOICE This isn't about her, this is about you. You're having trouble doing your job when she's on the Defiant and that's a problem. It's also affecting your relationship, and that's another problem.(beat) Don't take it so hard. So you can't mix your personal life and your professional life? Most people can't. I certainly can't. I once served on the same starbase as my sister -- what a nightmare that was!

Sisko smiles despite himself.

SISKO I'm looking forward to meeting you, Lisa. And I know I'm not the only one around here who feels that way.

QUARK(depressed)Beautiful aren't they?

JAKE Gorgeous.

He reaches in to touch one and Quark slaps his hand away.

QUARK Do you know how much I was going to get for these?

Jake shakes his head.

QUARK Almost... two hundred bars.

JAKE That's a lot.

QUARKNo kidding it's a lot. Now it's just a crate full of junk.

JAKE You still have another day. Things might work out.

QUARKThey might. But they won't. That's the way my life is. Do you know how much latinum I almost made in the last year? I almost made a fortune by overcharging Weyoun during the Dominion occupation. I almost made a fortune by helping the Grand Nagus regain his throne. And I almost found a thousand bricks of gold-pressed latinum, before I realized it was in Morn's stomach.

JAKE It's been a tough year for everyone.

QUARK(dismissive) You mean "the war?" Let me tell you something about "the war" -- everyone's had a victory in this conflict except me.

JAKE You did rescue your mother from the Dominion.

QUARKAnd then she promptly destroyed the entire fabric of Ferengi society by letting women wear clothes. That's no victory.(beat) I'm cursed. That's what it is. I should change the name of my bar to "Cursed Quark's." I wonder how much it would cost to redo all the signs...(frustrated)Ah...

He slams the lid shut on the container and starts walking toward the door.

JAKE You know, there's still a chance that Odo won't find out about any of this.

QUARKOh, he'll find out. Odo would love nothing more than to see me in jail... and after all I've done for him...

Jake stops in surprise.

JAKE Like what?

I was there for him. And what did I get out of it? Nothing. He still spies on me, still hassles me for minor infractions of the law and still can't wait for the opportunity to send me to prison. Jake reluctantly clinks his glass with Quark's. But just before they can drink up, Odo and Kira ENTER the bar wearing a 1920's tuxedo and evening gown respectively. Odo is carrying the necklace in a tastefully wrapped gift box. He leaves her at the door for a moment and goes over to the bar.

ODO(quiet) Quark, I'd like that holosuite now after all.

QUARK(shocked) You would?

ODOThat's right. It turns out that... Nerys agrees with you. She wants to celebrate the anniversary of our first date, not our first kiss. So... here we are.

Quark stares at him with an open mouth.

JAKE Neither do I.

O'Brien turns around with a stricken look on his face.

O'BRIEN Captain... there's no way for theDefiant to penetrate the barrier. The energy's composed of subspace metrion radiation -- if we get anywhere near it, the dilithium matrix in our warp core will collapse... and we'll be pulled down to the planet surface, just like the Olympia.

BASHIR All the evidence fits. Her age, rank, the way she died.

SISKO(with disbelief) But if she died three years ago... how have we... been talking to her?

44 CONTINUED:

O'BRIEN It must have something to do with the energy barrier. When her subspace radio signal passed through the metrion radiation in the barrier, the signal was somehow... time-shifted into the future.

BASHIR And when you sent a return signal...

O'BRIENIt went through the barrier and traveled back through time in the same way.

SISKOWe've been talking to someone in the past.

A long beat as they contemplate this idea.

BASHIR So what do we do now?

O'BRIENWe should bury her.

SISKO(firm) Not here. Not... alone in this cave.(beat) We'll take her back with us. Give her a proper burial. Among friends.

OFF his determined look...

45 EXT. SPACE - THE DEFIANT (OPTICAL)

docked at Deep Space Nine.

46 INT. WARDROOM

Where an IRISH WAKE has just begun. There's traditional Irish music, some food and plenty to drink. Sisko, Bashir, O'Brien, Kasidy, Worf, DAX and SEVERAL N.D. OFFICERS from the Defiant fill the room. The scotch has been flowing freely and the mood is celebratory. At one end of the room, in front of the large monitor, lies a PHOTON TORPEDO which is serving as a casket. The torpedo has a Federation FLAG draped over it and is surrounded by FLOWERS.

47 WORF AND DAX

are moving through the room, each with a drink in their hand.

DAXIt's called an "Irish Wake." It's a way of memorializing a death and celebrating life at the same time.

47 CONTINUED:

WORFWhat are we supposed to do?

DAXWe drink. Sing songs. Laugh.Cry. Talk about the deceased.

WORFIt sounds... almost Klingon.

48 KASIDY

is staring out the window when Sisko comes up behind her and slips an arm around her.

SISKOHey.

KASIDYHey, yourself..

SISKOWhen this is over... I want totalk to you about something.Something that's been on my mind.

KASIDY(wary)Okay. Is this.... about me?

SISKONo. It's actually about me.

KASIDY(wry)That's a relief.

SISKOI wanted to explain... my behaviorthese last few days...

She holds up a hand to silence him.

KASIDYSounds good to me. But let's talkabout it over dinner.(beat)You can cook.

SISKO That's a deal.

He laughs a little and pulls her closer.

50 BASHIR

who's had quite a bit to drink by now, gets up on a coffee table and addresses the crowd.

BASHIR I'd just like to say... that although I only spoke with her for a short time... that I admired Lisa Cusak...

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT FIVE 65.

50 CONTINUED:

BASHIR (Cont'd)I cared about her... and I'll miss her.(beat) And one more thing -- contrary to popular belief... I am not the arrogant, self-absorbed, god-like doctor that I appear to be on occasion...(beat) Isn't anyone going to object to that statement?

O'BRIENI will if you insist.

BASHIRI insist.

O'BRIENThen I object.

BASHIRThank you, Miles Edward O'Brien.(beat) I do have a heart. And I do care for all of you... even if it sometimes seems as though all I care about is my work.(lifts a glass) To the woman that reminded me that it's necessary to say that sometimes... Lisa Cusak.

They all lift their glasses and toast the casket.

ALL To Lisa.

Bashir steps down and O'Brien steps up. He's also had a few.

O'BRIEN I never shook her hand... and I never saw her face... but she made me laugh... and she made me weep.(beat) She was all by herself... and I was surrounded by my friends...

DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Sound... " - REV. 4/14/98 - ACT FIVE 66.

50 CONTINUED:(2)

O'BRIEN (Cont'd)... but I felt more alone than she did.(beat) We've grown apart, the lot of us. We didn't mean for it to happen -- but it did just the same.(beat) The war's changed us... made us pull away from each other.(beat) Lisa Cusak was my friend and now she's dead. But you're my friends too. And I want my friends in my life. Because one day we may wake up and discover that someone's missing from this circle... and on that day we'll mourn... but we shouldn't have to mourn alone.(lifts his glass) To Lisa and the sweet sound of her voice...

As they all drink up and the music continues... we PULL BACK as O'Brien and Bashir embrace, tears flow, the scotch keeps coming, and the healing has just begun...

FADE OUT.
