Instead, we accomplish our four-foldmission of education, exhibition, research, and conservation of desertplants by using the funds that weearn from paid admissions, specialevents like Luminaria, and fromgenerous contributions we receivefrom members like you.

We now have 38,000 memberhouseholds supporting the DesertBotanical Garden each year. If eachmember household made an extra$10 year-end gift, a further $380,000would be raised for investing in theGardens operation. If each memberhousehold made a year-end gift of$100, an additional $3.8 million wouldbe generated in support of the missionin 2015 and the years beyond! As youcan see, there is great strength in ourmembership numbers.

Of course, I would not ask for your additional support ifI did not make my own year-end gift to the Garden. And itmight surprise you to know that I also encourage each of ourstaff members to consider a year-end gift as well. (However, there is absolutely no obligation for any staff member toparticipate.) I am extremely proud to report that last year93 of our staff members did make a year-end gift to theGarden and special initiatives. I anticipate a similar responsefrom the staff this year, which speaks volumes about howimportant we think the Gardens mission is, and howcommitted we are to achieving that mission.

As I described above, the impact of member year-endgiving could be profound, and the strength in numbersthat our members represent could propel the Gardento new heights in 2015. Will you join me by making yourown year-end gift to the Desert Botanical Garden? I hopeso, and send my thanks in advance for your considerationof this request for support.

  • It Begins with TechnologyOur tour begins in 2011 when the Gardens Research,Conservation and Collections (RCC) departmentreceived a grant from the Institute of Museumand Library Services to develop a completely newplant collection database, Geographic InformationSystem (GIS), and provided funds for hiring a GISspecialist. You might wonder what a database andmapping system have to do with an on-the-groundexhibit. The answer is, a lot!

An innovative aspect of the 2011 grant project wasthe creation of a plant database that is cloud-based.This means that the database, which containsmany pieces of scientific data, can be accessed byany device with an Internet connection, includingsmartphones and tablets. A significant aspect ofGIS is that it allows us to link spatial datain ourcase, where plants are locatedwith the scientificdata for those plants, which includes things like thename of the plant, who collected it, and how long ithas been in the Garden.

With the new database and GIS infrastructure inplace, we were ready to begin collecting information. If you were a regular visitor during mid-2011 to early2012, you may have seen a small army of staff andvolunteers carrying a seven-foot-tall GPS (GlobalPositioning System) antenna and searching everyinch of ground for plants. You might easily havewondered, What in the world are they doing? They were mapping every cactus and agave plant inthe Garden, even those hard-to-find cacti like babysaguaros and Mammillaria that typically hide outunder creosote bush and other nurse plants. Inthe end, they produced a Garden-wide databasemap that has a reference point for each plant inthe Cactaceae and Agavaceae families; when anypoint is clicked on, it brings up all the scientificdata associated with that plant.

Putting the Technology to WorkNow that you have the background on thetechnology, lets get back to the Desert TerraceGarden and the Jan and Tom Lewis DesertPortal project.

When the designers of this new exhibit submittedtheir first draft, we were able to use the GIStechnology to overlay the design footprint ontothe Garden map. By doing this we could see thatplants in approximately 21 beds would be impactedby the construction of the new exhibit. However,at that time only the cactus and Agavaceae wereon the map and connected to the database.

As a living museum, the Gardens plant collectionis unique in that unlike an art museums collection, which is static with minimal movement, our collectionis dynamicit lives, multiplies, relocates and declineswith time. Therefore, in order to properly manage theplantings in the terrace/portal project area, we neededto first complete an accurate inventory of all the plantswithin the 21 impacted beds.

The Gardens GIS specialist, Veronica Nixon, and hervolunteers went to work mapping all the trees, shrubs, and other non-cactus, non-Agavaceae plants. Theyalso verified that the cactus and Agavaceae referencepoints were still accurate-from the smallest Arizonafishhook (Mammillaria grahamii) to each individual, intertwined, aptly named octopus cactus (Stenocereusalamosensis). In all, 790 plantings within the bedsimpacted by the project were confirmed and mapped.

  • To fully complete the inventory, Curatorof Living Collections Raul Puente-Martinez, along with Plant RegistrarsJoni Ward and Kristen Kindl, followedwith their volunteers, making sure everymapped plant was accessioned, meaningit was accounted for in the database andtagged with a unique accession number. An accession number is assigned to aplant when it enters into the collection, linking the plant to its respective data inthe Living Collections database. A metaltag stamped with its accession numberis placed with the plant and remains withit throughout its time at the Garden.

To accomplish this complex inventory inthe most efficient way possible, Veronicadeveloped an editable web map using theArcGIS app by Esri, providing real-timeaccess to our GIS database via iPadsand iPhones. Partnered with the LivingCollections database, which is availableonline, we were able to research or editthe plant data on the spot while outin the beds. This eliminated piles ofpaper and running back and forthto the office computers whenever therewas a question.

Because each plant in the project areawould need to be salvaged, either pottedor boxed or moved immediately toanother area in the Garden, we also

utilized thetechnology toinput salvagedirections forthose plants thatrequired specificinstructions. For example, cuttings wereneeded fromsome plants

before they were moved. Other plantswere to remain in place, some of whichwere later reused in the new design.

Prior to the first shovel hitting theground, we also identified and preparedthe areas throughout the Garden thatwould receive relocated plants. Seniorstaff from the Horticulture, RCC,and Exhibits departments identifiedappropriate sites for plants that wereto be immediately transplanted.A temporary shade structure was builtnear the construction site to act asa holding area for plants that wereto be removed and replanted into newbeds within the following weeks. The back-of-house propagation areawas expanded to accommodate theplants that would transplant betterin the fall and for the cuttings thatwould be collected and grown out.

We updated the web map, with inputfrom the general contractor, to includethe construction fencing and the actuallimit of work. This enabled us to narrowthe area of focus and minimize thenumber of plants to be moved.

12 Days of Teamwork toMove Hundreds of PlantsWith the new technology in hand and ourgame plan all set, it was time to executethe salvage operation. Unfortunately, there was not an app for that! Instead,we relied on ingenuity, physical work, and teamwork to complete the task athand. Sixteen staff members and seventy-three volunteers from Horticulture andRCC, plus three Horticulture interns, worked together over a twelve-dayperiod to dig up and move hundredsof plants. A local firm specializing inmoving large plants, Native Resources, was also brought in during this time tobox and remove sixteen large specimenplants and to relocate four saguaros(Carnegiea gigantea).

Organizing the salvage project was likedirecting a precision marching band.Everything had to happen in just the rightorder, with different people working onspecific activities at just the right time. The salvage efforts were prioritized:first clearing the area around the plants

  • to be boxed, then clearing areas whereconstruction fencing was going up andby any frequently traveled pathways.Simultaneously, cuttings and plant

pups were being collected in order tohave backup material in case anythingdetrimental happened to the motherplant. A small piece of flagging tapewas placed on the accession tags of themother plants to indicate that cuttingshad been taken and the plant was readyfor salvage.

As the salvage progressed, creativity wascalled upon. Large established clumpsof cacti (e.g. Mammillaria, Coryphantha, and Echinocereus) needed to be movedwith minimal disruption. To accomplishthat, Raul shared a technique of usingfive-inch rolls of stretch plastic wrap tohold the clumps together, which madefor easy handling and carrying. Thesame technique was used on large shrubsto hold branches together and out of theway, making it easier to dig them out.

We found that using wooden pallets tomove large shrubby and arborescent(tree-like) cacti, such as prickly pears(Opuntia), was a real help. Standardsize (4ft x 4ft) pallets were placed nextto cacti to be dug up, and then the plantwas lowered onto the pallet. This madeit easy to load plants onto carts fortransport and placement into their

new locations. For arborescent plants,we used 4ft x 7ft wooden pallets witha couple of straps to hold the trunksin place.

Keeping Track of EverythingAt the beginning of the salvage project,we had briefed the staff and volunteerson what was needed for record-keepingpurposes: all plant material must havean accession number with it and a dailylog was to be filled out for plants as theywere being removed, including theirnew location. At the end of each day, theplant registrars entered the informationinto the Living Collections database, which in turn removed the plants fromthe web map.

As a progress report of sorts, it wasquite the daily morale booster to seethat fewer and fewer plants remainedon the map and in the ground inthe project area. For the plants thatwere immediately transplanted, atemporary map point was enteredon the web map to denote thenew location.Veronica used thisinformation to follow up with theGPS to accurately map the plant. Overthe weeks to follow, plants were alsomoved out of the holding area, planted, and mapped, with their new locationupdated in the Living Collectionsdatabase.

At the conclusion of the salvage project, after twelve long days of hard work, generated reports confirmed what wesuspected. With the new technology,we were successful in managing andmapping the location of the collectionmore efficiently and accurately thanever before. Without the cooperationand collaboration of staff fromdepartments across the Garden, thiswould never have been possible.Imagine the hardest, longest, mostdetail-oriented move a friend couldever ask you to help out with. Thatswhat this was!

The best part of any behind-the-scenestour is going back to the public sideof things with that special insiderknowledge of what it takes to make afavorite place so compelling. We hopeyou will visit the Garden soon, strollthrough the Desert Terrace Gardenand the Jan and Tom Lewis DesertPortal and smile, partly because thenew exhibit is so beautiful, but partlybecause now you know a little bitof what it took to bring the projectto reality.

Apart from advanced planning, there are stillways that you can protect your succulentsfrom the dangers of freezing weather. Hereare some practical tips that will help your desertplants come through the winter without seriousdamage.

If a freeze is in the forecast and your plants arein a vulnerable location, a frost blanket typicallycan provide enough protection. Do not useplastic.

Refrain from watering your succulents in advanceof a freeze. Succulents typically have a bettersurvival rate if the soil around them is kept dry.

Columnar cacti such as the organ pipe or Cereusare most vulnerable at the tips of the stems. The growing tips can be protected with a frostblanket or with StyrofoamTM cups. Do not leavecups on after the danger of frost is past.

Aloes typically bloom in the winter months whena freeze is most likely. Aloe plants are able totake the cold but the flowers are frost sensitive. To protect the bloom stalks without damaging orbreaking them, place your frost cloth over a framesimilar to a tomato cage.

Be sure to remove all frost coverings thenext morning after the sun comes up andtemperatures have recovered. Keep your frostcloth handy in case another event is expected.

If your plant shows signs of freeze damage, donot remove dead tissue until later in the seasonafter the danger of frost is past.

  • Scott McMahon, the Gardens cactus collectionsmanager, added that south-facing areas and patioswith hardscape can also provide more radiatingheat during cold nights, making suitable locationsfor succulents. He also recommends having a frostkit readily available. A storage container holdingfrost cloths, old sheets, and clamps for sealing themaround sensitive plants will help you to mobilizespeedily when frost is expected.

Winter storms typically pass through quickly, leaving nights clear and cooling off rapidly. Keepinformed and up to date with your local forecast. The possibility of a frost/freeze event can occurin the lower deserts from late November throughearly February.

Every property has areas that offer more protectionfor delicate specimens. Take the time to study yourgarden and situate your plants well. Dont fear thefreeze, prepare for it!

  • The Garden has long been a mini-oasis for monarchs because ofthe milkweed plants and other nectar sources on the grounds, which feed the adult butterflies. Recently, we began documentingjust how many milkweeds the Garden has available for themonarchs. Using the Gardens GIS (Geographic InformationSystem) capabilities, we are mapping and verifying theidentification of all species of milkweed onsite. This processis still underway, but so far we have mapped more than 200plants representing four different milkweed species. Thisdocumentation of monarch habitat enabled us to register theGarden as a Monarch Waystation. You can certify your ownhome garden as a Monarch Waystation, too (see sidebar page 11).

Even before recent monarch declines began making news, the Gardens Mariposa Monarca Monarch Butterfly Exhibit, sponsored this year by SRP with support from The Ferry FamilyFoundation, has highlighted the need for monarch conservationthrough exhibit signs, interactions between Garden staff, volunteers and visitors and, of course, with the monarchsthemselves. We continued the effort this fall by expandingeducation opportunities through the Monarch and MilkweedSaturday events and new classes on monarch conservationfor both families and adults.

A New Monarch Research ProgramThis past summer and fall, Pegram and McCue collaboratedwith Dustin Wolkis, research assistant, and Steve Blackwell, conservation collections manager, to develop a research programto study interactions between monarch butterflies and milkweeds. This endeavor has been exciting for all of us as it has providedan opportunity for bringing together the butterfly expertiseof Kim Pegram in the Exhibits department with the plant andconservation expertise of staff in the Research, Conservationand Collections department. Together, we first explored manydifferent questions related to the use of milkweeds by monarchs.

TTTTTTTTThe monarch butterflyone of natures greatmigratory animals and one of the worlds mostrecognized butterfliesis in trouble. Monarchshave experienced significant declines in populationnumbers over the last several years, with the lossof habitat for their primary food source recognizedas a significant factor.

The orange and black monarch belies its seemingly delicatenature (the average monarch weighs about the same as apaperclip) by making the long trip from the U.S. to southernMexico each winter. Many people are aware that loss of habitatin the Mexico overwintering grounds is adversely affectingmonarchs. But did you know that the loss of milkweed plantsin the landscape across the U.S. is also affecting the numbersof monarchs?

The Desert Botanical Garden is taking steps to join in themonarch conservation effort by providing essential plantresources for monarch butterflies and caterpillars, providinginterpretation and education about monarchs in the MarshallButterfly Pavilion, and by embarking on new research projects.

Documenting the Vital MilkweedMilkweed plants are the sole food plant for monarchcaterpillars. Adult female monarchs must be able to findmilkweeds in order to lay the eggs that will produce the nextgeneration. To reverse the loss of critical milkweed habitat, monarch conservation organizations have begun to encourageplanting of milkweeds by everyone from home gardeners togovernment agencies to nonprofits.

  • We then homed in on questions that would allow us to notonly better understand the interactions between monarchsand native Sonoran Desert milkweeds, but also to better adviseour visitors and community members on how best to plant formonarchs. For example, there are multiple species of nativeand nonnative milkweeds available for Southwest gardenerswho want to create a monarch-friendly garden. But, how andwhat should one choose? Are some milkweed species betterthan others for attracting monarch butterflies and for monarchcaterpillar health?

We are in a unique position to study these interactions becauseof our concentration of plant experts, a butterfly expert, andthe Marshall Butterfly Pavilion. A new butterfly pavilion, planned to open at the Garden in 2017, will further expand ourability to conduct research on monarchs and other butterflies, with facilities for raising caterpillars and more area to studybutterfly behavior.

This fall, we began studying three different species ofmilkweed. Two are native to the Sonoran Desert, desertmilkweed (Asclepias subulata) and Arizona milkweed(A. angustifolia). The third, tropical milkweed (A. curassavica),is native to the U.S., but not to the desert. First, we began tolook at which species of milkweed female monarch butterfliesprefer to lay their eggs on. If they prefer one species more thanothers, gardeners may want to plant that species to bring thebutterflies to their gardens. Then, we looked at the rate ofgrowth of caterpillars on the three different milkweed species, documenting how many survived and how fast they grew.If they are more likely to survive and grow faster on one ofthe three species, we will consider encouraging gardeners inthe Sonoran Desert to plant that species to grow the healthiestmonarchs. We will share the results of all our experimentsafter the data has been examined.

We anticipate that monarch research at the Desert BotanicalGarden will have wide-reaching impacts. It will becomepart of the growing international body of knowledge on howmonarch butterflies interact with milkweed. Monarchs migratefrom Canada and the United States to Mexico, so efforts toencourage the increase of milkweed plantings in Arizona mayhelp monarchs throughout their range.

Want to Help?If you have a garden, we encourage you to take action to helpmonarch butterflies. You can create a monarch habitat byplanting milkweeds and nectar plantsremembering to reducethe use of pesticides to protect the health of the monarchs andother pollinators. You can also participate in monarch taggingactivities (check with the Garden in the fall for opportunities)to track migrating monarchs. By working together, we can makethe fluttering of monarch butterflies in gardens throughoutPhoenix an increasingly common sight.

The Desert Botanical Garden isnow certified as a MonarchWaystation by Monarch Watch,an organization created to monitorand conserve monarch butterflies.Monarch Waystations are habitatsthat provide resources formonarch butterflies. In orderto survive and create futuregenerations, monarch butterfliesneed milkweed plants, the onlyfood source for their caterpillars, and nectar plants for the adultbutterflies. You can create yourown Monarch Waystation andhelp the monarch butterfliesby planting milkweed and nectarplants in your yard and reducingthe use of pesticides.

In June 2014, eighteen Patrons Circlemembers participated in a garden tourof Paris and the Loire Valley, visiting ninegardens in eight days. We were delightedto have professional photographer DonnaRohmer, whose work is featured on thispage, with us as a guest.

Passionate stewards of these spaces, including historians, horticulturists, and chateau owners, guided the group.Dramatic uses of native stone quarriedfrom the region, elaborate vegetableplantings that were tended in formalparterres, and pleasing water featureswere particularly striking elements. Not just for show, they were all designedand built centuries ago by skilledarchitects, engineers, and craftsmenfor both aesthetic and practical purposes.

The tour showcased how respect forfeatures in the native landscape andfor the cultural history of the regioncame together with design principlesof beauty and function to create somany significant gardens.

The next Patrons Circle tour excursionin spring 2015 will will feature significantgardens in Philadelphia and theBrandywine Valley. Annual destinationsin future years may include gardens inCroatia and Montenegro; Charleston,SC; southern Spain; and the PacificNorthwest.

  • Calendar 2014 is coming to a close and the Gardens 75thAnniversary concludes with a review of accomplishmentsduring this 18 month celebration. We honored theforesight and determination of Founders Gustaf Starckand Gertrude Webster, and many other individuals whohelped nurture the fledgling Garden through early yearsof uncertainty and hardship. We celebrated the past 75years by renewing our commitment to understandingliving plant systems, to conserving threatened plants, and to reaching hundreds of thousands of citizens in theregion through onsite programs and through partnershipsin the community.

We launched a multi-yearfundraising effort to expand and enrich the Gardenas a national center for study and appreciation of theSonoran landscape.

We engaged a new generation of founders individuals, families, foundations, and corporations who areunderwriting a series of Garden installations, newfacilities, and programs.

It is my pleasure to recognize the dedicated 75thAnniversary Cabinet volunteers for their leadership, which inspired 711 donors to support TSI to date.Thank you to Rebecca Ailes-Fine, Kate Baker, OonaghBoppart, Lee Baumann Cohn, Mike Cohn, JacquieDorrance, Barton Faber, Peter Fine, Hazel Hare, BarbaraHoffnagle, Martha Hunter, Jan Lewis, Tom Lewis,Harry Papp, Rosellen C.
