A note from Father Daniel

In all things give thanks! This week we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving. This year the celebration might look quite different. Many of us will find ourselves having our dinner alone or only with immediate family that lives with us in an effort to keep everyone safe as the Pandemic continues to get worse. The loss of not being able to gather with loved ones will be quite painful and very real. As with everything else in 2020, Thanksgiving will not be the same. We acknowledge this loss and these feelings, and we might have to sit for a little bit and honor them. We should try to be creative in reaching out to others, using technology to share our Thanksgiving dinner at a distance, being intentional about calling those that might be alone, putting in the mail some of our signature dish for our loved ones if it will hold through the shipping, etc. In many ways, there has been no other year in which celebrating Thanksgiving has been more appropriate and more necessary. Gratitude is the key to joy and peace. It is easy to be grateful when all is going well and the blessings are evident. It is not so easy to cultivate an attitude of gratitude when life is challenging and the blessings are buried under layers upon layers of hardship. Yet, it is in uncertain and difficult times that we must eagerly cultivate this attitude of gratitude to find peace, hope and joy. I invite all to once you have honored your feelings of loss, to be very intentional about celebrating Thanksgiving this year. Even if you will find yourself alone on that day, make plans for your dinner, who you will communicate with, what you will do, how you will celebrate. Live this whole week in key of gratitude. Each night before you go to sleep take a few minutes to find three concrete things you are grateful for. Not easy things such as being alive, but concrete little things through which each day you experienced love, peace, joy, hope, forgiveness, growth. As you wake up each day, think of how you can create the opportunities for gratitude: what can you do today to make your day a good day? How can you make someone else’s day better? Take some time this week to look back at the last 8 months of this pandemic through the lense of gratitude, looking not for has been bad but instead finding the reasons

to be grateful, the blessings under the layers of loss, pain and challenge. How have you grown through this experience? Has it been an opportunity for more prayer and deeper reliance on God? Has it forced you to face your demons creating an opportunity for healing and growth? Has it allowed you to rediscover the value of family and spending time with them even when it is challenging? Has it helped you rediscover the value of little things? Has it moved you to think more of others and try to help? Has it helped you reeveluate who and what you value in life? Has it helped you to detach from fake securities such as money, work, health, routine? Has it forced you to live in the present? Has it prompted you to give up control? Has it increased the opportunity to share with family members that are far away through technology? Has it helped you to discover the value of solidarity? Has it helped you to encounter silence and solitude? These are just some questions to help you get started….take time and create your list of reasons to be grateful for this 2020. Write them down, or use your gifts and talents to create a picture, a craft, etc. that summarizes all that you are grateful for this year and place it where you can see it every day not only this week but also going forward. As this pandemic and all of our other challenges continue we will need to continually foster an attitude of gratitude. Thanksgiving comes around to remind us, this year more than ever, that we need to be grateful. As Paul teaches: “In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 At every Mass we say: it is right and just, our duty and our salvation to give you thanks O Lord always and everywhere. Being grateful is at the center of who we are as Christians. Let us lift our hearts from the place of sadness, fear, dissatisfaction and despair and with God grace uncover all the reasons we have to give thanks to Our Lord always and everywhere, for it is in this constant attitude of gratitude that we find salvation, this is the peace of being able to see that God is always with us and powerfully at work in all circumstances. Happy Thanksgiving!!! A.M.D.G., Father Daniel

Holy Cross Thanksgiving Baskets and Giving Trees Supporting our community during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. This year the school will not be handling the assignment of families in need as they have done in the past. The social workers at the schools will be directing families in need to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army will need additional resources this year to cover the increased needs they will be working to fulfill. We at the school have been told we can directly donate financially to the Salvation Army in Ithaca or if we wish to purchase items directly for a family, we are to contact that organization. Given the need for reducing the public exposure that happens with shopping, Ann Marie Streeter and Lisa Schug want to share the following giving opportunities with our parish as an alternative to our traditional practices: • Sponsor a Dryden child or family directly by contacting

the Salvation Army directly at 607-273-2400 and talking with Stacey McNeil.

• House an Angel Tree at your business and employees or other community members can select tags for children~ Contact the Salvation Army at 607 273 2400 to find out the requirements

• Gift cards for groceries, gas or specific stores can be donated to the Salvation Army

• Monetary donations can be provided to the Salvation Army, with the promise that your gift will remain in the community. If writing a check, make sure it is written to the Salvation Army Dryden Service Unit. These donations can be mailed to the Salvation Army at 150

N. Albany St., Ithaca, NY 14850 or donated during the bell ringing at Clark’s Food Mart.

• As far as Thanksgiving, the Dryden Kitchen Cupboard (6 North St, Dryden, NY 13053) supplies much of this and would welcome monetary donations if anyone is interested.

Please send your contributions for the Thanksgiving slideshow to [email protected]
