Christ’s Reign in My Life

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Most of us who grew up in this country were taught in American History that what made the United States of America great was that this country was founded on freedom and de-mocracy. We have a Bill of Rights and a Constitution that guarantee certain rights that can-not be taken away. And our leaders are elected by us, the people; we are not governed by the monarchs of Europe. However, today’s feast is a reminder that ultimately we are not citi-zens of this world but adopted children in the kingdom of God — and Jesus Christ is our King. But what does this mean? Proclaiming Christ as King does not make us any less patriotic but rather asserts His supreme sovereignty over our lives while we are in this world. Of course, we must always choose our faith over politics, but the real meaning of this feast has very little to do with poli-tics. A question to ask ourselves today is: Who or what is ruling my life? Now it can be easy to think that everything is going fine . . . “I’m here in church, so that’s something good at least.” Yes, attending Mass is a good sign, but if we understand how the enemy of the King works, we have to remember that he beguiles us – he tempts us in subtle ways – to overthrow the reign of God in our lives. And how does he do this? He often per-verts good things in our lives in order that our lives will be ruled by these creatures instead of by the Creator. For example, alcohol is a good thing and the Bible approves of it. However, if it starts to become the thing you look forward to the most, maybe it is ruling your life. Technology is good, but if you are constantly texting, updating your Facebook – or worse – addicted to looking at inappropriate sites, maybe it is ruling your life. Church politics are intriguing and sometimes frustrating, but if you are constantly angry or speaking uncharitably about church leaders, then maybe it is ruling your life. The good news is that, even though we know Christ the King will come back at some point in time and that we will be judged, in this life (while there is still time) we can still invite Him back in our lives to rule. When we look at the crucifix, we see his first crown, a crown of thorns. We see his arms outstretched – not in judgment – but out of love. We know that when we confess our sins to our King, He comforts us with His Divine Mercy. And at the Mass, the King shares with us – not a banquet of choice meats and wines – but His own Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Para-dise” (Luke 23:43).

Cristo reina en mi vida

Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

A la mayoría de nosotros (criados en este país) nos enseñaron en la Historia de América que lo que hacía grande a los Estados Unidos de América era que este país había sido fun-dado sobre principios de libertad y democracia. Nosotros tenemos una Declaración de Dere-chos y una Constitución que garantiza ciertos derechos que no pueden ser derogados. Y nuestros líderes son elegidos por nosotros, el pueblo; no somos gobernados por los monar-cas de Europa. Sin embargo, la fiesta de hoy nos recuerda que realmente no somos ciuda-danos de este mundo sino hijos adoptados del reino de Dios — y Jesucristo es nuestro Rey. Pero ¿qué significa esto? El proclamar a Cristo como Rey no hace que seamos menos patriotas sino al contrario asegura Su suprema soberanía sobre nuestras vidas mientras estamos en este mundo. Por supuesto, debemos siempre anteponer nuestra fe a la política, pero el significado real de esta fiesta tiene muy poco que ver con la política. Una pregunta que debemos hacernos hoy es: ¿Qué o quién está gobernando mi vida? Puede ser muy fácil pensar que todo marcha bien. . . “Estoy aquí en la iglesia; por lo me-nos eso es algo bueno.” Sí, asistencia a la Misa es una buena señal, pero si entendemos có-mo trabaja el enemigo del Rey, tenemos que recordar que él nos seduce – nos tienta sutil-mente – para derrotar el reino de Dios en nuestras vidas. Y ¿cómo lo hace? El con frecuen-cia convierte las cosas buenas para que nuestras vidas sean regidas por esas criaturas en vez de serlo por el Creador. Por ejemplo, el alcohol es bueno y la Biblia lo aprueba. Sin embargo, si comienza a ser lo que más ansías, quizás está rigiendo tu vida. La tecnología es buena, pero si tú estás constantemente enviando mensajes, poniendo al día tu página de FaceBook – o peor aún – adicta a mirar sitios inapropiados, quizás la tecnología está rigiendo tu vida. El liderazgo en la iglesia es bueno, pero si se convierte en una manera de afirmar el poder sobre otros y te hace juzgar a todos los demás como menos importantes que tú, quizás está rigiendo tu vida. La buena noticia es que, aunque sabemos que Cristo Rey vendrá en algún momento y que nosotros seremos juzgados, en esta vida (mientras todavía estamos a tiempo) podemos invitarlo a regresar a nuestra vida para gobernarla. Cuando miramos al Crucifijo, vemos su primera corona, una corona de espinas. Vemos sus brazos extendidos – no para juzgar – sino por amor. Sabemos que cuando confesamos nuestros pecados a nuestro Rey, Él nos conforta con Su Divina Misericordia. Y en la Misa, el Rey comparte con nosotros – no un banquete de carnes y vinos selectos –sino Su propio Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad. “En verdad te digo: hoy estarás conmigo en el Paraíso” (Lucas 23:43).
