CLMA LIAISON

Each Chapter was sent a letter outlining that the Chapter 1st Vice President was the CLMA Liaison Officer for the Chapter. It also provided information to the 1st Vice President on accessing the Collingwood Library and Museum web site. It is incum-bent upon the Chapter 1st Vice President to be the focal point for all items related to CLMA. Each Area Representative and Re-gional Representative should be checking on this item as they make their official visits to the Chapters. It is important that all the programs of Collingwood are made aware to the Chapters and for their support of the “National Sojourners Home”.

One item in particular is the Commemora-tive Brick Program which the Liaison Officer should be making known to the chapter members. Another area most recently iden-tified was the donation by the Ruby Linn Foundation in memory of Colonel George Harrington, Past National President, who passed away. In addition to the $25,000 donated for capital improvements, the Foun-dation will donate an additional $25,000 matching gift if $25,000 in additional pledges can be raised by 1 November 2010. Collin-gwood has reached the goal, but that does not mean that you should stop donations.

Each Chapter 1st Vice President should be visiting the Collingwood Library and Museum website, reviewing its contents and passing the information to their Chapter. The site will provide information which will assist in the carrying out of the 1st Vice Presidents responsibilities, as well as, communications from the CLMA Board Member who chairs the Chapter Liaison Representative Pro-gram. You are urged to check the website at least monthly for any updates that may have been input to the site.

Recommendations or suggestions for in-clusion in the website may be passed to the National 1st Vice President who will provide the information to the Collingwood Library and Museum Secretary.

THANK YOU

National Sojourners, I would like to thank all the National So-

journers Chapters, individuals and couples who have made a donation to the SEM Fund in George’s memory. His family and I ap-preciate the caring and love for him that this giving demonstrates. I hope you will forgive my inability to write individual “Thank-Yous” and know that our appreciation for your gift is heart-felt.

Ruth S. Harrington

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2010 THE SOJOURNER 3

NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Brother Sojourners,I am pleased to report that your National

Line and Trustees completed a productive executive level review at Collingwood on 7-8 October. After discussing a wide variety of operational topics all departed with a re-newed enthusiasm for and commitment to “Propelling National Sojourners Forward!” At the conclusion of the proceedings your National Line, National Commander and our Ladies traveled to Richmond, VA in their “colonials” where we carried the colors in the Grand Lodge of Virginia Masonic Family Day parade. Following the parade, we were also honored to initiate three members of the Grand Line and welcome them as new Sojourners.

As of this writing, Lyn and I have visited 22 chapters through the remainder of this calendar year we will visit chapters in Wyoming, North Dakota, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania

as part of my 75 chapter goal. During our visits, Lyn and I have greatly enjoyed the warm fellowship with the Brethren and La-dies present; have marveled at the great Americanism and Bridge of Light work completed and planned; and have been overwhelmed by the hospitality and cour-tesies extended to us. Every visit makes me so proud to be a Sojourner! I invite you to follow my visits on my BLOG (see the Command Post page of the Members Dashboard in the SOJOURNERS ONLY section of the website).

The Mid Winter Meeting (MWM) sched-uled for 11 – 15 Jan 2011) in Greenville, SC, is “just around the corner”. Our MWM host, John Sevier Chapter No. 548, will hold a special charter night dinner on Thursday, 13 Jan, in conjunction with the MWM. Regis-tration materials for the charter night dinner and all of the MWM activities may be found in the SOJOURNERS ONLY section of the website. Make you plans now and bring a first timer with you!

By now I hope all of you have reviewed the requirements for the Propeller Club Award and have begun filling out your application form. Your individual commit-ment is paramount for strengthening your chapter and our Order. I hope that you will be proudly wearing your Propeller Club pin

at a future chapter meeting soon. Likewise, I would hope that chapter officers have put their plan in place to earn the Chapter Excellence Award. Our collective actions, individually and as chapters, will propel us toward achieving the goals set forth in our Blue Print for the Future and strengthen the ability of our Order to continue its work in Proudly Serving the Cause of Patriotism!

I invite all of you to join with me as we again pause and reflect on Veterans Day a day to honor the heroes of American Freedom those who have sacrificed, those who have served and those who stand a post worldwide to defend us.

Finally, as we enter the holiday season it is again a time to give thanks for our many blessings the United States of America; liberty; each other; family and friends; our gentle Craft and beloved National Sojourn-ers; our men and women in uniform; and so much more! Lyn and I wish that this holiday season lights up your heart and house with joy! We look forward to greeting you in Greenville, SC…

Fraternally,

Harry

INCENTIVES & AWARDS COMMITTEE

I would like to take a few minutes to introduce myself. I am Carl Diamond, the new Chairman of the National Incentives and Awards (I&A) Committee. I want to take this op-portunity to share a few thoughts on incentives and awards.

First, what incentives and awards are available? There is an Awards and Citations Pamphlet available from National which lists all the awards and references. The informa-tion is also in the National Regs and By-laws, although the pamphlet is much easier to follow. These give you all the information you need to make your recommendations for the awards. REMEMBER, Ladies and non-Sojourners are only eligible for a Certificate of Appreciation. Chapter V of the Hero’s manual has the information on Hero awards.

Next, you need a form to make recommendations. The National Award Recommenda-tion Form (and the Awards and Citations Pamphlet) may be found on the web site on the Reference Library, page under members only area of the SOJOUNERS ONLY section. Remember to try and keep award recommendation write-ups to one page if possible --- in may past submissions, the second page has been lost. Take the time to be specific about each individual; don’t make it a “cookie cutter one size fits all” justification. If you are going to do it, do it right! The same form is used for the recommendation of the Hero’s awards.

Lastly, when do the recommendations need to be submitted? All recommendations are due to the National Secretary by NLT March 31! Remember these important points: (1) your recommendations need to be signed by Regional and Area reps. (see the form); (2) you need to plan accordingly if you want to submit a quality award recommendation on time; (3) you should begin not later than Feb/Mar to identify who is deserving of an award; (4) no recommendation will be reviewed if received after 31 March. --- timely submission is paramount; (5) chapters should establish their awards committee now and develop a plan of action a plan; and (6) I would like to see recommendations from every chapter and camp this year --- we have many deserving Brethren and Ladies who deserve recognition for all they do in “Propelling national Sojourners Forward!”

Please contact me at [email protected] with any questions you may have.

CHAPTER NEWS

HAMPTON ROADS #6, PO1 John H. Knox, Secretary, 913 Holladay Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23455-5207. Chapter 6 is honored and proud to accept Bros. Michael Johnstone and his father John Johnstone as our newest members. Bro. Michael Johnstone became an MIP member in May but was not initiated because of our Installation in June and our Summer break from July thru August. In September at our dinner meeting Bro. Michael was initiated. His father Bro. John Johnstone a MIP mem-ber of Portsmouth #352 presented his son Bro. Michael with his Sojourner’s Medal and members handbook. Then to our surprise Bro. John Johnstone presented the chapter with his Application to join chapter #6. It is really great to have Father and son together.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN #16, Mr. Leon-ard R. Bezar, Secretary, 239 Lafayette Lane, Wayne, PA 19087-1115. On 20 October, 2010, Past President, Cdr, USCG, (Ret) Bill Doty, served as Guest Inspect-ing Officer for an Annual Area Manager Inspection of the NJROTC Unit at Owen J. Roberts High School, Pottstown, PA. This NJROTC Unit is commanded by Capt. USN (Ret), Marc Stanley, Senior Naval Science Instructor, assisted by Gunnery Sergeant Charles Mahala USMC (Ret). For each of the past two years, our Chapter has been privileged to award competitive scholar-ships to two cadets from this unit to attend the Freedoms Foundation Youth Leadership Conference at Valley Forge. So, the day readily exemplified the value of the National Sojourners program of working closely with the JROTC and ROTC programs to produce quality leaders for the future. This Unit was given a very high proficiency rating by Cdr Doty. At the Awards Presentation Ceremony following, for invited families and guests, the Corps of Cadets then put on a demonstra-tion of their precision trained Color Guard and Drill Team capabilities. In prepared remarks, Cmdr Doty stressed that these

students had made a choice to participate in this elective program, without realizing at the time all the benefits that would come to them that will aid them in their future lives and careers. The school principal and the superintendent of the District then also spoke of their willing support for the NJROTC program.

NORTHERN NEW JERSEY #42, Lt Col William H. Haynes, Secretary, RR 2 Box 2537, Cresco, PA, 18326-9524. Northern New Jersey #42 held their September meet-ing at the Cannon Gate Club at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ, and we were honored to have the National President, Bro. Harry E, Sand-ers, Jr. and his lovely wife, Lynn, visit with us. Bro. Sanders gave an inspirational talk on his theme of Duty -Honor -Country and his award program of Propelling National Sojourners Forward. Bro. Forman gave a talk on Elder Scam and shared his experi-ences of his Mother being a victim. Older people and their children should always be aware of scam artists preying on the elderly. Bros. Philip A. Donnelly and Moises I. Gomez were initiated into the chapter and welcomed with open arms.

HARRISBURG #76, Mr. John A. Judge, Secretary, 2007 Columbia Ave., Camp Hill, PA 17011-5423. At a recent meeting of our Chapter Past President Vaughn Schwalm was presented with the Presi-dential Citation award for Youth Emphasis, Americanism/Scholarship, Bridge of Light and ribbon and Certificate for Strengthen-ing Masonic Understanding and the Past Commanders’ award for % of Active Duty members by President E. Thomas Kuhn. Deputy Area Rep. Jack W. Heinze reported that six young men attended the American Leaders Summit at Valley Forge last July.

sponsored candidates, Michael R. Cro-means, Martin A. Garcia, Michael A. Grice, Joshua S. Moyer, Jordan E. Specht, Jo-sef S. Volk; and Area Rep. Raymond A. Vaughan.

He also reported that 26 certificates and ribbons were presented to members of the JROTC/ROTC Units last year. Our speaker in September was Bro. Edward E. Shank, Major, USA, who recently returned from his assignment as public affairs officer in the Middle East. President Kuhn presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and welcomed him home. In October we en-joyed hearing a speaker from the Carlisle War College, Ms. Christie P. Smith a civilian who described her life as a member of the graduating class of 2011. She highlighted the various programs and activities of that great institution

L-r: Ms Christie P. Smith receiving her certificate from Bro. E. Thomas Kuhn. Bro. NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2010 THE SOJOURNER 9

SALT LAKE #114, SSGT Charles E. Warren, Sr, 3787 East 1200 South, Her-ber City, UT 84032. During a recent family visit to Salt Lake City, UT, 1st National Vice President “Bob” McConnell found time in his busy schedule to meet with some of the officers of Salt Lake #114/Great Salt Lake Camp Heroes of ‘76. Camp Commander “Bud” Cornelison conducted the entourage on a very informative and interesting tour of the beautiful and historic Salt Lake Masonic Temple. Bro. McConnell shared a lot of information regarding the activities of our National officers.

L-r: Chapter President Robert K. McKen-zie, PGM; 1st National Vice President “Bob” McConnell; new Regional Representative Glen A. Cook, PGM; and outgoing Regional Representative Bill F. Baker, PGM, pictured in the Colonial Room of the Salt Lake Ma-sonic Temple.

PASADENA #265, LTC Joe Ryland, Secretary, 5215 Kauffman Ave, Temple City, CA 91780-3948 At a recent chapter meeting Bernie Harris presented an excel-lent program about Bill Mauldin who drew cartoons during WWII about “Willie and Joe”. These cartoons were published for several years in the Stars and Stripes. General Patton did not like the cartoons because he thought they were degrading to officers; However, General Eisenhower thought they were appropriate. Chapter meetings of Pasadena #265 are popular among local members; also non-member Sojourners often attend. One reason is the “laid-back” atmosphere. Our bylaws state “Roberts Rules of Order shall not be followed during chapter meetings, nor any other form of formal order”. Yet, we espouse and advocate the Purposes of National Sojourners. Our chapter is very competitive among the other chapters in the Southern California Area.

L -r: Don Regis, Joe Ryland, Mark Ber-asley, and Arthur Zabounian.

PORTSMOUTH #386, Maj. C. William Willey, Secretary, PO Box 1264, Do-ver, NH 03820. National President Harry Sanders, of National Sojourners Inc. visits Northern New England Area. Bros. Robert Piotrowski and James Ryan initiated into Portsmouth #386. Bro. Piotrowski was raised to the Degree of Master Mason May 6, 2010. Bro. Piotrowski served with the United States Army for twelve years at-taining the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He recently joined the United States Air Force Guard as a Lieutenant Colonel. Bro. Ryan is a Worshipful Past Master of Star in the East Lodge No. 59 Exeter, New Hampshire. He has been awarded the Major General John Sullivan Medal from the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire for his dedicated services. He is active with Dover- Portsmouth Valley of Scottish Rite in New Hampshire. Brother Ryan was recently awarded the Scottish Rite Meritorious Service Medal for his dedi-cation to Scottish Rite, Blue Lodge, church and community affairs. Both of these Broth-ers joined as MIP Members. This initiation ceremony was done by our National Presi-dent Sanders, who as part of his agenda for his year as National President is to visit as many Chapters as possible.

Bro. Sanders presenting Propeller Club Award pin to Area Rep Andrew F. Hirst.

L-r: Bros. Cederic Smith, Calvin Keyler, Harry Sander and his Lady Lynn, Jack Campbell and his Lady Barbara, Randy Cary, Palmer Martin and his Lady Nadine.

NORTHEAST FLORIDA #435, CPO Charles R. Cooper, Secretary, 3247 Sabal Palm Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32277. On September 1, 2010 our chapter initiated 2 new members. Bros. Kolen Sawyer and William F. Ellis were instructed and obli-gated by our Reg Rep Howard Hudgins, PP, PC, with the assistance of several Past Presidents and officers. Pedro A. Arroyo, PNC, and Area Rep Richard C. Wyatt, were present to witness and congratulate the new Sojourners.

L-r: MW Elmer G. Coffman, PGM of Florida and a Sojourner, who gave the din-ner presentation; Robert T. Shellenberger, PP, PC, who presented the Medal lecture; Pedro A. Arroyo, PNC; new members Kolen Sawyer, William F. Ellis; Richard C. Wyatt, PP, PC, Area Rep.; Howard Hudgins, PP, PC Regional Rep.; and Charles R. Cooper, PP, PC, Secretary, And Adjutant.

FREDERICKSBURG #545, SSGT Shel-by L. Chandler II, Secretary, 211 Stratford Circle, Locust Grove, VA 22508. Across the country, citizens of our great nation paid tribute to those who have given so much to ensure our Freedom, our safety, and our security – our military, our Fire and EMT, and our law enforcement. Not surprising, then, we singled out those in our local com-munities that came to represent our hearts on this day in 2010 – Sep 11th. The National Sojourners led the parade on this day with a Color Guard - Bros. Buck Buchanan/Grand Masters #996, Thom Minnis/Langley Mon-roe #310, and Bill Turner/Minuteman #995 – with a strong contingent of young ladies from the International Order of the Rainbow, who were guided by several Camp Follow-ers. The ladies carried some 20 flags of the Colonial period. Also seen was Bro. Tom Copes/Minuteman #995 carrying the Star Spangled Banner and his Camp Follower, Martha, who carried the Betsy Ross. The Marine contingent was also represented by Bro. Leo Powell/Quantico #44 with the Bennington Flag. The 48-Star Flag lead the Grand Marshal’s vehicle. Bro. Pete Klei/Fredericksburg #545 had the privilege of carrying this long-serving Stars and Stripes, which flew during World War II. Hundreds lined the parade route, and when it was over, a program that began with Bro. Turner leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and offered the Toast to the Flag, while the Sojourners/Heroes and Camp Followers stood at attention on the stage.

10 THE SOJOURNER NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2010

NATIONAL COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

Focus Point Three of Five: MembershipGreetings to all Heroes wherever dis-

persed! In this third issue, we address Membership, the lifeblood of all Masonic organizations. Membership has three fac-ets—initiating members, activating existing members, and retaining members over the long term. This article will address those three main points.

Initiating Members: National Sojourn-ers, like all Masonic organizations, has membership issues. Some might say that a National Sojourners’ membership issue is not a Heroes of ’76 issue or even that Heroes of ’76 does not have a member-ship problem. However, the Heroes of ’76 Charge states, “our basic function . . . is to support our parent Order, National Sojourn-ers, Incorporated.” So, Heroes of ’76 will not “sit on the porch,” but will “be in the hunt” to solve any membership issues. What can or should you do?

Have a membership focus, adopt the problem personally, be alert to potential new members, and commit to replace yourself plus one—sign two petitions for your Chapter.

Frequent places where eligible new mem-bers are present--military bases, veterans groups (VFW, MOAA, American Legion, Daedalians, Old Crows, etc.), and Masonic groups and functions.

Carry several petitions in your briefcase or glove compartment where it is always readily available.

Ask a potential member to join National Sojourners—eligible are Master Masons and Officers, Warrant Officers, and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (past or pres-ent) in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, NOAA, or PHS. Do not overlook the National Guard and consider eligible military, non-Masons, who could and should be Masons—get a Mason and you will eventually have a Sojourner candidate.

Invite a potential member to join you for dinner/meeting--the success rate of getting a petition signed over dinner is 70-80%. We have proven this time and again with our Omaha Masonic Friendship Dinners.

Honorary membership requires Chapter leadership involvement to avoid embar-rassing a potential candidate. All advancing Grand Lodge Officers should be National Sojourners. If not already doing so, please

start immediately. Attend Grand Lodge, get a private room, and initiate them right on the spot.

Activating Members: This is core fellow-ship and bonding with the new member and begins with his sponsor before initiation. At his entrance to the meeting, the spon-sor should introduce him and his Lady to the members. Introduce his Lady to other ladies present. Remember, if she is happy, he will be happy and vice versa. While it is very easy for our members to be with close friends, do not leave a potential new member alone. Get to know him, center your conversation on him, and make him feel welcome and comfortable. Once initi-ated, his sponsor should ensure he attends the meeting for a couple of months—this initial 3-4 months is critical in whether he will become involved or not. Assign him a task and let him know that we need his sup-port. He should feel that “No one can take his place if he is not there.” Remember, if his Lady wants to attend, she may (will) af-fect whether he attends. Their attendance, participation, and fellowship are part of the overall wealth of resources and must be nurtured.

The other significant part of activating new and current members is having an ac-tive program at each meeting. The topics can be of almost any nature. Programs at my chapter have addressed the history of Afghanistan from a nationally recognized expert, immigration, the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo, the SAC Museum, German POW Camps, Lewis and Clark re-enactors, the Park Service, veterans’ benefits, the Congressional Medal of Honor and Ma-sonry, Buffalo Bill Cody, John J. Pershing, Essay Contest winners, the Masonic Home, and many, many others. These programs can involve almost any topic. All it takes is for someone to set them up or coordinate them, and for the Chapter to cover the cost of the meal.

Retaining Members: In National Sojourn-ers, a higher percentage of our members already have Membership in Perpetuity (MIP) status than equivalent memberships in our Lodges, Rites, or Shrines. While re-tention is not the same or as extensive as it is as in the rest of the Masonic community, it does exist.

For the individual member, here are some suggestions. As an annual member, please consider obtaining an MIP. National Sojourners conversion rate (MIP cost rela-tive to annual membership cost) is about 8-to-1, the lowest in Masonry, i.e., a Lodge perpetual or life membership often costs 20+ times the annual dues. A National So-journers MIP is a good opportunity that you should not miss. Aside from the monetary

benefit, remembering to pay is or can be a significant issue. Lastly, members can be in current status (dues paid), but be inactive. I encourage all members to attend their Chapter meetings, have dinner with friends, and re-blue those relationships that you held dear in times past. Make the decision now, “I will attend my Sojourner meeting this month!”

For the general membership perspective, if your Chapter does not have a calling list, start one. Call all members, not just the ones that came to the last meeting. Pick one member that has not attending in months or years and arrange to pick him up. Sometimes our members cannot drive at night and will not say so. Bring them to the meeting and take them home after-wards. Don’t let declining night vision cost us a valuable Brother and Lady. Retaining a member starts with that first contact and lasts throughout his tenure. Look at you rolls of suspended members and re-contact them to see if they are happy with their deci-sion. Let them know that like Motel 6, “You left the light on for them.”

In summary, membership is not just an organizational issue, but also an issue for each individual. Adopt the problem, commit to make a difference personally, and replace yourself plus one . . . sign two petitions for membership. If we do this, we CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE and help Order of National Sojourners and Masonry.

P.S. REMINDER: From my first article this year, inactive Heroes of ’76 Camps were to rejuvenate by 30 Sep 10, elect Officers by 30 Nov 10, and initiate Officers by 31 Dec 10. If your Heroes Camp is inactive, have you made a difference and are you on schedule? “This is as true in everyday life as it is in battle: we are given one life and the decision is ours whether to wait for circumstances to make up our mind, or whether to act, and in acting, to live.” Brother General Omar N. Bradley

Sincerely and fraternally, Edward Nolte

CAMP NEWSNORTHERN CALIFORNIA CAMPS. On

September 26, 2010, Heroes of ’76 from all over California were pleased to present the Flag of the United States of America at the installation of Most Worshipful William J. Bray, the 146th Grand Master of Masons of the Grand Lodge of California. The following Heroes were present: Fort Sutter, Golden West, Peter Lassen, John D. Sloat, John C. Fremont, and William Biehl, Jr. Bro. Van Owens from William Biehl, Jr. Camp was selected to carry and post the Flag of the United States of America.

ALAMO CAMP (Ft. Sam Houston #17). A raw recruit by the name of Daniel Ray Whitacker, normally called “Ray”, was of-ficially made a Hero on 29 September 2010. After many attempts at gaining clandestine admission to the camp, and evading his captors, he was finally cornered and placed in the guardhouse awaiting interrogation. He was shabbily dressed and had wounds throughout his body. He was confined to the guardhouse, fed beans, bread and water until the Commander decided to call him forth to explain himself. He was called upon to give a speech on Bro. Douglas MacArthur. He later claimed that it was his intentions to join the Continental Army. This required several trips through the well-known tributary due to his lack of knowledge of the questions put forth to him. He gave his speech on Bro. MacArthur with some items that were unknown to the Heroes in attendance.

FORT TRUMBALL CAMP (New London #58). On July 4, 2010 the New London Chapter #58, Fort Trumbull Camp had the honor and privilege of carrying the replica of the Stonington Battle flag in the Stonington village Parade. Each year the Stonington Historical Society organizes a participatory parade where the town’s people come out aided by the Society’s members and the towns fire trucks, ambulances and others to have a parade.

The replica flag, 18 X 11 feet in size, is copied after the Battle Flag from the War

of 1812. The first celebration took place on August 10, 1815, a year after the battle, the first year of peace. Stonington’s battle flag, the huge, shot-torn banner of sixteen stars and sixteen stripes, was raised at the 1814 fort, shown on old maps as a curved rampart facing to the south and west. A procession marched to the Congregational church, listened to an address by the Rev. Ira Hart, and returned to the fort, where a prayer closed the day. The historic Ston-ington flag, a very rare 16 star, 16-stripe example and possibly the only period 16 star flag in existence, had been on display for many years in the Ocean Bank building in Stonington, Connecticut. Recently it was taken down for cleaning and assessment and a replica made, as the original is too fragile to even be displayed.

The accompanying photos depict the Bros. before the parade as they gathered, and while marching through the village. L-r: Jim Chianese, Carl Mitchell, John Sasser, C. A. Duke, Charles Yohe, Burt Turner, John Plante, and Ed Childs.

YORK CAMP (Harrisburg #76). The camp was in recess along the smooth running Susquehanna River, the campfire lighted and Commander Larry Rutt had just retired for the evening when an alarm sound form those stationed along the perimeter. Much to our surprise two individuals hand-somely dressed stated they were instructed to report to our camp but both lacked any written orders. They were both placed in the guardhouse. Following the usual ques-tioning, both needed frequent “refreshing”. Few correct answers were missing and both could not recount any heroic deeds.

The Commander’s patience was wan-ing, but both had a sudden recurrence of

memory and correct answers followed. The two Bro.s, John B. Ewell and Norman A. Beard were welcomed into York Camp of Heroes of ’76. L-r: Back Row Candidates John Ewell and Norman Beard. Front Row OOD Edward Baumgardner, CDR Laurence Rutt, C/S Tom Kuhn, and ADJ John Judge.

PHIL SHERIDAN CAMP (Fort Sill #129). In late October several Heroes were enjoy-ing a cup of coffee around the campfire when a sentinel alerted them to an alarm on the perimeter. Upon investigation they found an injured soldier who wanted help from the camp. The Heroes were dubious but finally allowed him to enter the camp for further interrogation. His head wound caused him to be a bit dazed but, after two trips to the “D” and intense questioning, he was finally identified as a Continental soldier by the name of Bro. Tom Easterly. When challenged further he was identified as the Secretary of Fort Sill chapter and accepted as our newest Hero of ’76.

JOHN J. PERSHING CAMP (Pasadena #265) After three years of unsuccessfully tracking a cunning, ragged, eavesdropper over the badlands of four western states, the Heroes of our camp lassoed and hog-tied a lop-eared interloper who turned out to be none other than the scoundrel they had been seeking. This ragamuffin was subjected to the strictest of interrogations by Douglas Bridges and Joe Daugherty. Then, an in-depth investigation was con-ducted by Steve Harris and Jim Lenon. At the conclusion we were satisfied that there was nothing about this individual that we did not know. Nevertheless, there was serious doubt as to his worthiness to become a member of Pershing Camp. But, after much discussion, argument, and debate it was unanimously decided to allow Ed Apacible to join our camp.

L-r: Jim Lenon, Bob Mason, Joe Ryland, and Harry Sprague.

COL GEORGE F. UNMACHT (Seminole #373). On July 14, 2010 several Heroes of the George F. Unmacht Camp, led by Commander Henry Kuhn gave a Service Flag presentation to the residents of the Cloister, Orlando, FL.

the Hero Degree and wife Terry received the Camp Followers Degree conducted by Sister Jenny Barton (Mrs G. Ed) and her corps of ladies. This joint venture exceeds a decade’s span of Bro.hood.

Georgia Hussars Camp was represented in the Brooklet, GA Peanut Festival Parade on 21 August 2010 by COG Wally J. Crews and OOD Bruce H. McNall. Hard workers of the camp don’t limit their dedication to just one organization. Shown is PC Roger W. Coursey, presenting the Martha Washington Medal to Ms. Cathy Miller, Lachlon McIntosh Chapter, DAR for her support of Edward Telfair Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. Bro. prisoner was admitted as a recruit. After The History, Lectures, and, toast to the flag, Area Rep C. Wayne Barnes was welcomed to the camp. During the Second section the recruit Daniel Kitchens made a number of trips into the big ‘D’.

GEN JOHN STARK CAMP (Green Moun-tain #527) September 25, 2010. Bro. Philip Morton, Commander of General John Stark Camp opened the camp for an En-campment at Old Fort No. 4, Charlestown, New Hampshire which is a living history museum that travels back in time to the 1740’s. The mission of Old Fort No. 4 associates is to” professionally collect, preserve and authentically interpret both physical and intellectual resources which provide an educational understanding and appreciation for the 18th Century heritage of the Connecticut River Valley. Shortly after the opening there was a commotion from the outer perimeter. The Sentries hav-ing investigated the commotion found an individual by the name Douglas W. Almon, stating he was a Mason and National So-journer in good standing indicating that he wanted to join the Continental Army. Af-ter Bro. Almon was being interviewed by the Camp Commander, Bro. Philip Morton and other Heroes of the camp present, and they being satisfied of his patriotic intentions he was accepted as a Hero and new Recruit of General William Whipple Camp.

JOE FOSS CAMP (Chattanooga #540). It was a bright fall day near Brainerd Lodge as the Camp gathered after the harvest. Commander Bill Gregory was greeting the returning “Volunteers” when the Officer of the Day reported that a civilian had arrived who wished to join our struggle against the British. He looked like he had already been through a skirmish with his arm in a sling and walking with the aid of a cane. He looked a bit old to be a recruit. The Commander ordered that he be paraded about the Camp and be subjected to the usual examination. He appeared to be a might slow at first, but soon caught on after a couple of long trips into the “D.” Much to the embarrassment of his sponsor, he was unable to recount even a single heroic act in his obviously long lifetime. Owing to his deep humility and sincerity, he was allowed to join the Camp in hopes that he could

be of some use in the upcoming Winter campaigns.

L-r: Benny Malone, PC, Bob Pelfrey, PC; Officer of the Day, Jerry Wood; Chaplain, Clyde Caldwell; Recruit Gene Meador; Commander Bill Gregory; M. D. Manning, PC; Hank Clark, PC; Commander of the Guard, Jackie Mullinax.

CARL L. SITTER CAMP (Shenandoah Valley #543). During a meeting on August 28th 2010 of the Carl L. Sitter Camp held at Fort Unity, a disturbance was detected at the outer perimeter.

Upon investigation two scraggly looking individuals were trying to invade the camp-site. They were immediately taken into cus-tody and placed in the guardhouse. Upon intense questioning from the Commander

of the guard, he determined that they were sojourners and informed the camp that the two pitiful excuses were wishing admittance into our camp. They were removed from the guardhouse and placed on mess duty while waiting further examination. After ex-tensive examination and many trips to the “D” the two were found to be worthy, and Bros. Thomas O. Canterbury and Venton E. Plum were welcomed into Carl L. Sitter Heroes of ‘76 Camp.

Top row L-r: Wayne E. Price, Aubey A. Dellinger, Jr., Richard C. Radi, (Camp Commander), Charles E. Davis, (Chapter President), Raymond Steele. Second Row, Stephen S. Eisenhauer, Harry E.Sanders, Jr. (National President) Wieland C. John-son; new members, Thomas O. Canterbury and Venton E. Plum.

A TRIBUTE TO CAMP FOLLOWERS OF 1776

In Seventeen Seventy SixBrave men left home to fightTo make the New America Free,They fought with all their might.Their wives and children helpedAnd behind the lines they stayedTo feed and nurse their fighting men,While with faith in God, they prayed.

With each battle came another campTo be set up on some site. The wives and children followedTheir men into the night. When victory was finally wonDirt graves were everywhere,The remaining fighters struggled homeTo farms – no longer there.

The Heroes’ wives were steadfastAnd behind their men they stoodTo help them build their lives againIn whatever way they could. The Camp Followers of Seventy SixWere courageous, strong and true. When battle hymns are sung with prideThey deserve their glory, too.

COVER PICTURE

A bit of Sojourner history was uncovered recently (24 AUG 2010), when a non-descript dusty old box was opened in preparation for the two-year renovation dedication project for the Shrine Hospital on Punahou Street. The names and Chapters of the Brethren participating in this 30 NOV 1930 ceremony are clearly visible after 80 years as well as the Sojourner Medal and Heroes of ’76 Rib-bon. Columbus #10 (Ohio) and Mare Island #82 (California) are no longer active. It is not known why the Brethren of Hawaiian #9 did not participate in this ceremony.
