SHOW RULES 1. All exhibits must be the property of the exhibitor and, except for the Floral Art
classes, plants and plant produce must have been grown by the exhibitor. 2. Entry forms for exhibiting at all Shows should be returned to the Show Secretary
not later than the Thursday preceding the date of the Shows. 3. Late entries will be accepted only at the Show Secretary’s discretion. 4. All Shows are open to both members and non-members. No fees for exhibiting are
payable at any of the Shows. 5. No exhibitor may enter more than one exhibit in any one Class. 6. The kind of vegetable or fruit exhibited must be listed in the Horticultural Show
Handbook of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) unless the class description states otherwise. Exhibitors wishing to verify the eligibility of an entry should contact the Show Secretary.
7. Special show vases are provided for exhibitors entering the Cut Flowers and Foliage Classes and these should be used unless otherwise stated in the Schedule.
8. Special clear plastic domes are provided for the use of exhibitors entering the Domestic Classes to protect uncovered food dishes. If the domes are inappropriate for the exhibit then cling film or other protective wrapping must be used.
9. Use clear bottles and flanged corks or screw tops for exhibits in the Wine Classes and clear, green or amber bottles with removable tops in the Beer Class.
10. Disqualification from a class will result if a specified number of items in the class description and any restrictions such as space and pot size are not adhered to.
11. Exhibits must be staged on the morning of each Show before 10.15 a.m. after which the venue will be cleared of all persons not involved with judging. Class Cards will be available for collection and these must be placed with the Exhibitor’s name face down at the appropriate exhibit.
12. For the convenience of exhibitors who cannot attend at the correct time to stage their entries, the exhibits, marked with the owner’s name and Class number, may be given beforehand to the Show Secretary for staging.
13. Judging at all Shows will be guided by the rules of the RHS, The National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) and The National Federation of Women's Institutes (NFWI). All prizes are awarded at the discretion of the judges whose decision is final. The judges have the power to withhold any award in any Class in which the entries are not judged to be up to the required standard. Special prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the Show Team.
14. Points are awarded as follows; 1st Prize - 3 points, 2nd Prize - 2 points, 3rd Prize - 1 point, Highly Commended - 1/2 point. Certain classes may attract double or triple points. Such classes will be clearly labelled in the show schedules.
15. Prize money is awarded only in respect of the Young Gardeners’ Classes. 16. Any objection must be lodged with the Show Secretary before the prize giving. 17. Exhibitors are required to remove their exhibits after prize giving and before 5.00
p.m. Items left on the tables after that time will be disposed of at the discretion of the Show Secretary.
18. The Society, while taking all reasonable care, will not be responsible for any loss or damage to materials used as exhibits or in the staging.
19. All trophies must be returned directly to the Show Secretary at least one month before the next holding of the Show for which it is awarded.

A1 “My Most Colourful Flower”. One stem. Entry accepted on the day. A2 Any Primula type, one stem. A3 Any non-bulbous plant not eligible for Class A2 (Hellebores, Pansies, etc.)
Five flowering stems on a board (supplied). A4 Fresh mixed flowers. A5 Heather, five flowering stems, one or more cultivars. A6 Daphne, one stem. A7 Daffodil, mixed, three or more cultivars. A8 Daffodil, miniature, three stems, one or more cultivar, flower not exceeding 5 cm. A9 Trumpet daffodil, (Division 1), three stems, one or more cultivars. A10 Trumpet daffodil, (Division 1), one stem. A11 Large cupped daffodil, (Division 2), three stems, one or more cultivars. A12 Small cupped daffodil, (Division 3), three stems, one or more cultivars. A13 Daffodil eligible for Classes 11 and 12, (Divisions 2 or 3), one stem. A14 Double daffodil, (Division 4), three stems, one or more cultivars. A15 Double daffodil, (Division 4), one stem. A27 Shrub or tree flowers, three stems of one species or cultivar. A28 Mixture of shrub and tree foliage and flowers. A29 Any other flower for which there is no separate class, five stems.

B1 “My Pride and Joy”. Entry accepted on the day. B2 “Martinette”, single daffodil bulb in a pot (Members only - bulb supplied at
2017 AGM) B3 Foliage plant, any type. B4 Flowering plant, any type. B5 Any orchid in a pot. B6 A collection of plants. 90cm of tabling allowed. A single grouping of either
foliage, flowering cacti or succulent plants or any mixed grouping of plant types may be exhibited. Double points are awarded.
B7 An alpine, any type, one or more plants in a pot or container. B8 An African violet in a pot or container. B9 Hyacinth, maximum number of three, any colour, in a pot or container. B10 Polyanthus, any colour, in a pot or container. B11 Tulips, maximum number of five, any colour, in a pot or container. B12 Primrose, flowers and leaves in a pot or container. B13 A cyclamen, any colour, in a pot or container. B14 Any other bulbous plant or plants of a single species or cultivar, pot grown. SECTION C: VEGETABLES AND FRUIT C1 “Ready-to-Go”. Vegetable or fruit plant, single or group of same cultivar, ready
to grow on. Entry accepted on the day. C2 Broad beans, two plants, ready to pot on or plant out. C3 Marrow, single variety, two plants ready to pot on or plant out. C4 Pumpkin, single variety, two plants ready to pot on or plant out. C5 Tomato, single variety, two plants ready to pot on or plant out. C6 Vegetable or salad plant seedlings, six, ready to pot on or plant out. C7 Rhubarb, two stems. C8 Leeks, two. C9 Purple sprouting broccoli, three stems. C10 Chard, six leaves, one or more cultivars. C11 Herbs, culinary, four kinds with stems in water. Flowers should be excluded. SECTION D: FLORAL ART
Niche spaces are provided for Classes D1, D3 & D4. Unless otherwise stated maximum exhibit dimensions are 60cm wide by 45 cm deep. No restriction on height. D1 “Over The Rainbow”. An exhibit. D2 “Less Is More”. A ‘Petite’ exhibit. Maximum size: 25 cm for any dimension
except the diagonal. Open tabling. D3 “Sussex Life”. An exhibit. D4 “All In A Spin”. An exhibit. For exhibitors with limited experience. Points
contribute towards the Maureen Baker Cup. D5 “Royal Air Force 100th Anniversary”. (Men only). An exhibit. Open tabling.
SECTION E: DOMESTIC
E1 “Beatrix PotterTea Party”. Entrants are asked to lay out a place setting appropriate to the theme with cutlery and crockery and using items of their choice but to include samples from at least four of the Domestic Classes. Entries will be judged on overall presentation and the same criteria as for the Domestic Classes.
Preserves E2 Pickled vegetable, any type (onion, gherkin, cucumber, etc.), one jar. E3 Jam, any type, one jar. E4 Citrus fruit marmalade, one jar. E5 Plum chutney, one jar. SECTION F: HANDICRAFTS F1 “Wheels Within Wheels”, any item of handicraft. F2 An article of knitwear, crochet, embroidery, or counted thread, any style.
(Maximum dimensions 60 x 90 cm). F3 A painting or drawing of spring flowers, any media. F4 An item of paper craft. F5 An up-cycled article, any media (brief explanation about origin of materials). F6 An item of handicraft not included in Classes F2 to F5 (Pottery, carvings...).
SECTION G: PHOTOGRAPHIC Photographs must not exceed A5 size, may be black and white or colour and not include computer generated special effects unless otherwise stated. Can be mounted. G1 “Budding Gardener”. G2 “Movement”. G3 “At Play”. G4 “Spring Flowers/Plants”. SECTION Y: YOUNG GARDENERS 7 Years & under Y1 Make three jam tarts. Y2 Decorate an egg (a polystyrene egg is fine). Y3 Create a picture based on one of Roald Dahl’s books (any media). Y4 Arrange a vase of spring flowers. Y5 Make an embroidered bookmark (simple cross stitch design on Aida fabric). Y6 Decorate three round biscuits with Easter designs. 8 to 10 years Y7 Make three jam tarts. Y8 Decorate an egg (a polystyrene egg is fine). Mandatory Recipe Quiche Lorraine
Method: 1. Pastry - sift flour and salt, rub in butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs 2. Sprinkle water over, mix to crumbly paste. Draw together and turn out onto
floured surface. Knead until smooth, then roll out and line a 8 inch (20.5cm) flan tin.
3. Cut bacon into strips and fry until soft, then drain and place in base of pastry case 4. Heat milk and cream to just below boiling point. Remove from heat and combine
with beaten eggs. 5. Season to taste and add nutmeg. Pour into pastry case 6. Bake at 2000C (4000F) Mark 6 for 10 minutes. Reduce temperature to 1700C
(3250F) Mark 3 and bake for further 35-45 minutes until set. Ingredients:
225g flour ¼ tsp salt 100g butter cold water to mix 100g streaky bacon 150ml milk 150ml single cream 3 eggs, beaten salt & fresh ground pepper large pinch ground nutmeg

E11 Almond slices, five E12 Vanilla fudge, five pieces. E13 Pinwheels, savoury, three. E14 Walnut scones, three. (Mandatory recipe) - see page 15. E15 “The Great Apple Pie Contest”. Homemade pastry and the recipe of your choice. Maximum diameter of 25 cm.
This is a challenge introduced in 2009 and is sponsored by Asselton House. In addition to a cup there is a £10 voucher to be awarded.

Mandatory Recipe Walnut Scones
Method:
1. Mix the flour, baking powder and pinch of salt 2. Rub in butter with fingertips until mixture resembles breadcrumbs 3. Mix in the walnuts and milk with a rounded knife until mixture clumps together 4. Tip mixture onto work surface and squash together to form a ball. Do not work
dough too much. 5. Flatten the dough into a disc about 3cm thick. 6. Cut disc into 6 scones. 7. Transfer to a baking sheet, brush with beaten egg and top with walnut half. 8. Bake for 15 mins at 2200C / 2000C fan / gas 7 until golden and puffed. Cool on
wire rack. Ingredients:
225g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 50g butter, cubed 50g walnuts, finely chopped 6 walnut halves for tops 125-150ml milk 1 egg beaten
Mandatory Recipe Banana Loaf
Method: 1. Butter a 2lb loaf tin and line with baking parchment 2. Cream the butter and caster sugar together, then slowly add eggs with a little flour. 3. Fold in remaining flour, baking powder and bananas. 4. Pour into the tin and bake for about 30 mins at 1800C / 1600C fan / gas 4 until a
skewer comes out clean. 5. Mix icing sugar with 2-3 tsp water and drizzle across top of loaf and decorate with
banana chips.
Ingredients:
140g softened butter 140g caster sugar 2 large eggs 140g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 very ripe bananas, mashed 50g icing sugar Dried banana chips (for decoration)

THE FERGUSON CUP AN AUTUMN SHOW COMPETITION FOR THE FAMILY
“TALES FROM BEATRIX POTTER”
Create a scene from any Beatrix Potter story using vegetables, fruit, flowers and
gardening materials (vegetables and fruit can be sculpted)
The competition has to be entered jointly by a minimum of one adult and one person under 15 years of age. More than one exhibit can be entered from a
group of family members provided no member enters more than once.
The winning group will be awarded the Ferguson Cup and receive a Garden Token to the value of £10.
The competition does not qualify for points towards other Society awards.

The Royal Horticultural Society Banksian Medal Awarded to the exhibitor gaining most points in the horticultural classes.
The RHS Medal is a premier horticultural award. Points gained in floral art, domestic, handicraft and photographic classes do not count towards the award. The winner may not receive the award again in

The Wilson Perpetual Challenge Cup
Awarded for the most points gained in all classes. 2017 WINNER Alison Boreham
The Guy Perpetual Challenge Cup for Young Gardeners
Awarded for the most points in the Young Gardeners Classes. 2017 WINNER Lucia Assorgi
The Platinum Anniversary Cup Awarded to the Member attaining the most points from entries in the
‘signature’ classes of each section. Entries not necessary in every signature class or every show.
2017 WINNER Chris Hone
The Maureen Baker Cup Intended to encourage exhibitors with limited experience in flower arranging. Awarded to the exhibitor who has gained a first prize in the appropriate class
and obtained the most points for the three Shows combined. The award is not open to those who have previously been awarded the trophy
or have obtained a first in other Floral Art Classes in previous years. Not Awarded in 2017
These awards will be presented at the Annual General Meeting.
SPECIAL AWARDS
In addition to the awards and prizes for each section of each show as
detailed in the show schedules, the Society awards the following special
awards for the entrant gaining the most points at the
Spring and Autumn shows combined.
