Concierge Corner

As usual, once a year we take advantage of Atlantic City’s Restau-rant Week. For those who don’t know, for one glorious week a whole slew of Atlantic

City restaurants and some of those in the surrounding area offer a 3 course prix fixe menu for $33 and a lot also offer a lunch for $15.

It’s a really good opportunity to try restaurants that might otherwise be very pricey. This was Jen’s pick and she chose Luke Palladino at Harrah’s Casino. To be honest I ate at his North-field location which I wasn’t crazy about, then for last year’s restaurant week I ate at this Atlantic City location which was really good. For this reason I was really excited about this pick.

I arrived a little before 7:00 pm and joined Deneen at the bar. They had a nice but small drink menu, but I kept it simple with an Absolut Cosmo which is a drink I love (but I don’t order too often). It was perfect. Deneen had a creamy Expresso Martini that she deemed good as well.

Jazz, Jill and Jen all arrived and soon after we were shown to our table. There was definitely a nice crowd for the promotion, but it wasn’t over-crowded. I was glad I made a reserva-tion which is a must for weeks like

these. Our server brought over some simple sliced bread with garlic and oil on the side for dipping.

While we munched, we looked over the special menu. The regular menu was also available, but none of us ordered from that. For my appetizer I chose the Arancini. These were 2 balls of risotto, cheese and scallions. They arrived perfectly gooey on the inside and crispy, but not greasy on the outside. Of the five of us, four ordered these and we all raved. It was definitely a substantial start to the meal and something different from a salad that I would usually order.

Jill got the chickpea soup which she seemed to like as well. The dinner menu offered a little bit of everything and I ordered the braised pork ribs. This arrived as two small racks served over a smattering of sliced fingerling potatoes and fennel.

After the appetizer, I was only able to finish one of the racks. This was really good. I was the only one who ordered this. Other dinner choices were the Seafood Mixed Grill and the Gnocchi. I managed to spear one of the latter with my fork and it was tasty. I do

prefer Gnocchi as a side rather than a main dish as it tends to be a little heavy for my taste. Finally we made it to the dessert course.

Normally, I would have ordered the rum chocolate cake like everyone else at the table, but Restaurant Week is the time to live dangerously. I had the White Chocolate Mousse with blood orange juice floated on top. The description mentioned candied ginger as well, but I didn’t see or taste this. Instead, there was a strawberry on top.

I really liked this and it was something different, but I would have liked to try it with the ginger. I would also like to mention that Jill ordered a decaf cap-puccino which the server forgot to bring at the beginning of dessert and brought it near the end. He admitted that he forgot about it and said there would be no charge for it. That was a classy move and it’s one example of what sets a good server apart from the rest.

Overall, this was a really good choice for Restaurant Week, and I wouldn’t mind trying their usual menu as well. March Supper Club will take place at the end of this month as usual so stay tuned!

Atlantic City Get Ready!

Miss America has returned. Miss America was founded in the year 1920 as a way to extend the busy summer season in Atlantic City. She had a great run for 86 years. Miss America left Atlantic City in Janu-ary 2006. To everyone’s disbelief (and around the world) that moment coincidently marked the begin-ning of Atlantic City’s downward spiral.

Unbelievable! What were they thinking?

Miss America has a long history of controversy from swim wear attire to race acceptance and political cor-rectness and then she left for Las Vegas. But wait. All is not lost. She is coming back.

Let December 27, 2012, mark the rebirth of Miss America in Atlantic City. Her actual début will be in September 2013. Thanks to the quick thinking of our Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno. Thank You

from all of us around the world!

Miss America will return an energy not felt in eight years. Her return also marks the start of a new begin-ning for Atlantic City and the great job the CRDA and the Atlantic City alliance has done with their systematic approach to a step by step improvement to the quality and choice attractions Atlantic City has to offer. It has only just begun.

A Miss America Parade and the Miss America Pag-eant will be held in September 2013. ABC will air the Miss America Pageant. I can’t wait. See you there.
