Intro

With the world population increasing so rapidly, so is technology and Social Media. With Social Media booming across many platforms this means if you miss one platform, you could be losing potential clients. Each platform is hungry for content. There are so many marketers out there all having their own opinion, every book having it’s own chapter on the authors belief, or influences telling us how they do it. The question in all of these messages is “What to believe?” Should you post ten times a day on ten different platforms, only to be considered to having an average content strategy? Or should you be happy with one post a day which you spend an hour or two on developing it. If you’re in business and you want to dominate Social Media for your industry or area, how can you run a business, spend time with your family have a list and on top of all of that be expected to manage your Social Media? Even then when are you meant to study, educate and know what works and what doesn’t? You have a business to be working on, not some algorithm update to worry about. If you employ marketing staff or an agency how much are you willing to pay? How much will you need to pay to have a complete team to manage your entire Social media strategy? If you’re a marketer then you’re also burdened by the same pressures, however that’s what we’re paid for. But if you’re an marketing employee, then your have people t report to, which can make it difficult when you ask for an increase in your budget or resources to keep up with the competition. How many changes and trends can you be worried about, how can you unlock the Social Media Code? That is what we are about to uncover. My name is Michael Thandi and I’ve been involved with Online Marketing since 2002. Having read a lot of books and heard from a lot of trainers, I have put together this publication on what has worked for me and for my clients. Like any other marketer, coach, influencer or author, this is based on my beliefs of what I have tried and tested to find success. Here it is in a simple step by step guide for you.

Social media metrics are the data to measure the performance of your social media accounts. Knowing the performance of your metrics will help understand if your socials are bringing you the desired results you’re hoping to achieve. Social platforms provide a number of metrics, each metric measures different aspects of performance. Different metrics will have more or less relevance to you, depending on your goals and the current stage of your social strategy. A social account which has just started compared to one with 1000 followers are going to be different as compared to an account with 100 000 followers. Then it is also important to consider the purpose of your social presence, is it to increase brand awareness, offer free education or promote products or services. There are various tools out there which can help you measure these metrics, however you can simply use the native analytics tools within each platform. Here is a template you use to measure

Goal Setting

When setting goals use the SMART method. By setting large unachievable goals you may be left demotivated by your efforts. To remain positive set smaller achievable goals at first and build on those. •  Specific (simple, sensible, significant). •  Measurable (meaningful, motivating). •  Achievable (agreed, attainable). •  Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based). •  Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive). •  Evaluated •  Reviewed

Questions you may ask yourself when setting your goals and objectives are: •  What exactly do I want to achieve? •  Where? •  How? •  When? •  With whom? •  What are the conditions and limitations? •  Why exactly do I want to reach this goal? What are possible alternative ways of

achieving the same?

Goals

When setting your social media goals, it’s important not to overwhelm yourself. Unless you’re working with an agency to manage it, you may want to set 1-2 goals to start with. This will give you a greater chance of boosting the social media metrics that you have identified as important. Remember that if you try to improve everything at once, you may (A.) not be able to make the quality improvements that you desire, or (B.) not be able to pin the improvements that you have made down to one factor. By setting goals, examining metrics, and following the strategies that we have laid out for you, you will be on your way to effective social media marketing in no time.

Vision

The vision is your end goal to achieve, or where you want to get to. ... Keep this simple. Examples: “Our social media vision is to increase brand awareness,” “Our social media vision is to be better connected with our customer needs.” Start with the end in mind and that is our Vision Then work on your mission, what you must do now, daily, weekly, monthly Then break that down into Goals Our vision is “Social Media Ninja’s aims to provide as much Social Media related content and education around the world so business can implement and grow their own businesses.”

Mission

Here are a few questions to ask yourself: •  1. Why am I on social networks and what will I use them for? •  2. How do I want to build my personal or organizational brand using social media? •  3. What outcomes do I want to see from my time and investment in social media? •  4. How does social media fit into my overall strategy?

This elaborates on your vision, but broken down •  We create and curate engaging content on "PLATFORMS: with "TARGET

AUDIENCE" to help them achieve "OUTCOME" as a result we will achieve "GOAL" for our business

Plan Your Platforms

•  Three Key Questions

18TheSocialMediaCode

Page 20: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Three Key Questions With so many Social Channels to choose from, you need to start somewhere. However you also need to consider how many touch-points it will take you to get someone’s attention and to make them become your “lead”, not make a “sale”, first step is acquiring leads. There are many different statistics that say different numbers. However 10-15 years ago it was considered that it required 5 touch-points with your prospects would convert them to a “lead”. Nowadays it is considered to be around 15-20. With so much going on with Social Media our attention spans have become much smaller, meaning we spend less time thinking about things when we see them, hence the increase. Ideally if you have a presence across five platforms and one person follows you on all five, it doesn’t take long before you connect with them 15-20 times. Three key questions to ask yourself are: 1.  Are you B2C, B2B, or both? 2.  Who’s your target audience? 3.  What’s your overall goal?

That’s what you really need to focus on. If you know the answers to those three questions, it’s relatively easy to get started on two to three platforms to dedicate your time to to start with and build up from there Once you’ve been able to answer those three questions, then you need to match them with the top platforms. •  FaceBook •  YouTube •  Twitter •  Instagram •  LinkedIn •  Pinterest

19TheSocialMediaCode

Page 21: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Create A Calendar

•  WhyUseACalendar•  Important:BeforePlanningACalendar•  Determineyourpos?ngfrequency•  Determineyourcontentra?o•  ContentRepository•  ExampleCalendar

20TheSocialMediaCode

Page 22: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Why Use A Calendar So why use a calendar? It’s a simple question, let’s expand on it - Why do we keep diaries and schedules for our daily lives? To be more prepared and organised, so we know what is happening when, so we can plan things in advance. 1. Save Time 2. Stay Organised 3. Be Timely 4. Be Relevant 5. Build Credibility

Advantages of using a calendar: •  It’s easier to balance topics, •  Easily create themed posts •  Never miss important dates, •  It prevents overloading one social network and neglecting others This is quite an intense Social Calendar, you can use it as a guide to plan your own. Simply download it from www.michaelthandi.com.au/templates

21TheSocialMediaCode

Page 23: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Important: Before Planning A Calendar Even though a calendar will help you plan organise your social activities, you need to plan the calendar first.. Here are a number of factors to consider before planning your calendar: •  What platforms are you using? •  Which ones are performing the best? •  Should you continue publishing to all of them? •  Or are there any that can be deprecated? •  What are all the usernames and passwords of each account? •  How many times per day are you currently posting to each network? •  What are the goals for each network? •  Who is responsible for each channel? •  Do a content audit, too

Posting Frequency

If you’ve recently competed a social media audit, you’ll understand the basics of how often you’re posting to each social platform. So you need to ask yourself the following: •  Will that be the plan moving forward? •  Will you change anything from your results? Either way, your social media calendar will be based on your posting frequency, such as: •  How many gaps you need to fill, or create. •  How many slots you need to allocate per social platform. Based on your content and amount of slots, you can then work on how many per day. Otherwise if you think with the end in mind, and plan for 15 slots a day on 3 platforms, you need to create or have content according to 105 posts per week. That’s getting close to Social Media Domination ;)

22TheSocialMediaCode

Page 24: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Determine Your Content Ratio

The planning continues. You need to plan the ratio of your content. For example, if your structure is setup correctly you will have a process to generate leads and then a process that converts those leads into sales. Social Media is a social platform so it is important to be social with it. Just think if you went out to dinner with friends and they all were poking at you to buy their products or services. That’s not how it works in real life, same as “Social” media. As an estimate, 90% of your content should be sharing knowledge and information and10% should be selling. In some cases it may be 100% knowledge and education, that can also generate sales. But the best way to determine the things to post will be trial and error with your followers. So you will need to post your content and track how people react to each one. Based on what is most popular, you can create content around that to post more often. Also, decide how much of each type of content you want to post, so that your calendar is aligned.

Content Repository

A content repository is just what it sounds like, a place where you can store all your content so you can choose different pieces when assembling your social calendar. A Content Repository isn’t anything fancier than an Excel Sheet. Simply include the following titles so it is organised: •  Title •  Content type •  Link (to a folder where it is stored for images or video) •  Expiry date •  Image (if required)= •  You could also include space for interesting excerpts from the piece of

content. These may help to inform the final copy of your posts.

You can download an example Content Repository from: www.michaelthandi.com.au/templates

Page 25: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Step 5:

Create and Curate Content

•  Create vs Curate •  Why Create •  Why Curate •  What to Curate or Create •  Repurpose Content

24TheSocialMediaCode

Page 26: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Creation vs Curation

Content Creation is the process of creating your own content from scratch and marketing it to your followers or subscribers.

Content curation is the process of gathering existing information like blogs, social media posts or, eBooks relevant to a particular topic and sharing it with your brand's followers.

25TheSocialMediaCode

Page 27: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Why Create

There are many reasons why you should create your content, here’s why: It helps Generates Leads •  An eBook can be used to provide information in exchange for contact details. Convert your knowledge to a simple eBook, get it onto your website and promote your page. The lead capture is then best to be configured with a Mail platform such as Mailchimp. By creating original content, you can easily capture new leads into your business.

The Content is 100% Yours •  If you work in any number of regulated industries such as Law, Accounting, Real

Estate, Finance, you need to be very careful as there is a very fine line between creation and copying.

It Drives Traffic •  Social Media loves original content, especially if it is “Liked, Shared, Commented

and Reacted to”. Posting popular content helps with getting more out of your social media following.

It’s Your Brand •  When you write your content, prepare it so it links back to your brand, that way it is

easier for people to associate the content back to your brand. Your content becomes part of your brand and voice.

Become A Thought Leader •  When creating your own swag of content from video and images to Infographics

and eBooks, you become a thought leader who others start looking up to. When they need a problem solved they will turn to you. You become recognised as an industry leader. Think of social Leaders such as Grant Cardone or Gary Vaynerchuk. They hammer out content and a s a result are considered as entrepreneurial royalty. Believe it or not, they also started from 0 followers once upon a time.

26TheSocialMediaCode

Page 28: The Social Media Code › wp-content › themes... · Of the 7 billion plus population, 3.48 Billion are on Social Media. • Over 360 million new people began using social media

Why Curate So why do we Curate content? Become a voice: You can become a voice to your audience by sharing content and providing your feedback and opinion. This can be done with your followers or even others in your industry. To save time: If like most content managers you’re busy with platforms, creating and optimising, then curation starts saving a lot of time. Show you have more knowledge You wont always know everything, so rather than be an expert with knowledge you can be an expert curator. Just be careful which sources you curate content from, as some brands may not like it so much.
