Comportamentul consumatorului este puternicinfluenţat şi de apartenenţa acestuia la o anumită clasăsocială - o altă importantă variabilă de natură exogenă.
Dintre numeroasele eforturi de a
operaţionalizaaceastă variabilă, astfel ca ea să fie utilă în cercetările demarketing, o bună reputaţie au dobândit-o acele încercăricare se bazează pe luarea în consideraţie, în modsimultan, a mai multor caracteristici ale consumatorilor,cum sunt:
veniturile
ocupaţia
nivelul de educaţiePe planul activităţii practice de studiere a
comportamentului consumatorului există unele dificultăţi în ceea ce priveşte agregarea acestor trei variabile,deoarece, pe multe pieţe, nu există aceeaşi corelaţie între nivelul de educaţie, ocupaţia consumatorului şiveniturile pe care le realizează.

Aşa cum s-a demonstrat prin cercetărileefectuate, categoriile sociale prezintănumeroase particularităţi în ceea ce priveşte
modul de manifestare a cererii pentrudiferite produse şi servicii,modul de petrecere a timpului liber,obiceiurile de cumpărare şi de consum,preferinţele pentru variatele forme
promoţionale şi, în general, reacţionează diferit la diversele
mixuri de marketing.
Cunoaşterea specificităţilor existente la nivelulcategoriile sociale considerate permite
realizarea unei segmentări a pieţeideosebit de utilă pentru elaborarea de programede marketing adecvate, precum şi o mai bunăsatisfacere a nevoilor consumatorilor.
