You can do more than two if you wish to demonstrate greater knowledge/understanding.
The Social and Cultural World in musicPairs Oral PresentationTara Ellam, Cheltenham Girls High School
Music is created by persons, produced by groups within society and acts as a reflection and expression of cultural and sub cultural attitudes, values and beliefs. It allows persons like you to access their macro world and other cultural points of view across time.
For this task you will be examining, in pairs, at least two songs from the list provided, and explaining the social and cultural themes they present and relating them to the course concepts. You may certainly study more than two songs, for interest and/or practice at concepts in which case, your best two explanations will count towards your final mark.
Syllabus area Preliminary Depth Study: The Social and Cultural World
TargetedOutcomes
P1, P3,P9, P10
Bullet point/s The nature of the social and cultural world• an overview of the multicultural and hybrid nature of societies and cultures• persons and their interactions with individuals, groups and the community within the
contexts of micro-level, meso-level and macro-level society
Locate the lyrics for TWO songs (minimum) of your choosing. It would be a good idea to listen to the song* also, in order to provide you with the attitude and mood in which the song was intended. For each song:
r Identify the song , artist/s and date (relating to concept of TIME) the song was written/released
r Include a copy of the lyrics with key themes/issues highlighted and notated
r Explain what themes/ issues it is presenting about society and/or culture. For this you can conduct secondary research on the meaning of the song, and you will need to consider the TIME in which the song was written and therefore the events/issues of the society/time in which it relates to. However! All research needs to be explained by yourselves in social and cultural language (terms and concepts)!
r Explain how the song relates to each of the fundamental course concepts and any other concepts. Ensure you use and integrate a variety of the course concepts we have studied so far!!
r You will be presenting your review to the class in a presentation which both students must actively participate. You are expected to have some visual stimulus and/or presentation aids in the form of one or more of the following:
r handouts, overhead transparencies, Power Point slide show or other appropriate formats.
