NEXT MEETING FEBRUARY 16 2019, 1:00 PM AT ROSAMOND LIBRARY
January General Meeting Notes:
January’s meeting was preparation for the next and beginning contest discussion
In-House Contest The membership decided to have four in-house contests this year, one each quarter. The first will be in March, with the subject “Marine” (anything from the U.S. Marine Corps). In June we will have the popular “Jurassic Plastic” (any pre-1970 kit). A twist this time is your model will not have to be built OOB, but you can make any modifications or use any aftermarket of your choice. In August, we will have “Out of Your Category” (build a subject that you don’t normally build). Like armor for you aircraft guys. And finally, in December, the subject is “Red” (anything ‘red’, painted red, Soviet, etc.). Busy year! Build Meetings
In the past couple of years, we have had several ‘build meetings’ where members brought projects they are working on and the first part of the meeting in dedicated to construction. This year, Prez Steve suggested that every meeting could be a ‘build meeting’ and members are encouraged to bring their projects to every or any meeting. Great idea!
2019 Desert Classic
VP Jim kicked off planning for this year’s contest. Jim suggested retaining the same number of trophies, but eliminating the “Collaborative Model” category and replacing it with another category split, to which the membership agreed.
The contest theme was discussed. Several ideas were floated, with the club deciding on “Desert” (any desert subject).
Also discussed were Special Awards. We decided to eliminate the Best Finish Awards and add Best 75th Anniversary of D-Day, Best 80th Anniversary of the start of WWII, and Best 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing.
Niilo has been looking into trophy options, and I’m sure he’ll discuss at the meeting

The Tool Crib
Several new things this month.
Rich brought in very fine (1/64”) masking tape.
The tape is vinyl and very flexible. You can see in the photo how fine a line the tape can produce. Available from MegaHobby. I’ve also seen it on eBay
Steve brought in a couple of items.
AK True Metal
Very similar to Rub-‘n-Buff, a wax-based metallic polishing paste. Available at Burbank House of Hobbies, several online vendors and eBay.
Vol. 24 N2 2019
Hemp cord
Useful for simulating various size of rope. Available at Michael’s.
I’ve recommended Maketar masking products previously, and I’ve finally been able to get a hold of another one of their products, The Canopy Survival Kit.
Like all Maketar products, the masks are die-cut from Tamiya masking tape. The canopy set consists of three sheets of various shapes that can be put together to mask almost any canopy shape. Costs about $16. Only place I have found this is through Hannants or directly from Maketar (shop.maketar.com)
Vol. 24 N2 2019
AK Interactive has been known for their water-based acrylic paints, but has introduced a new line, AK Real Colors
These are synthetic lacquers. They appear to be very similar to Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color paints, and can be thinned with Gunze thinners. Right now, the line is armor-oriented (they have some really cool stuff, like British LRDG colors), but they plan to expand into aircraft colors. I got these online from Freetime Hobbies, but I’ve discovered Brookhurst Hobbies carries them, too.
Club Demos
I believe Henry’s still scheduled to give a more detailed version of his ‘rant and rave’ presentation with photos at the February meeting.
Steve will be giving presentation on bare metal finishes in April, and Jim will demonstrate figure painting techniques in the future.
