CoolSculpting® is a great option for those who have unwanted fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. CoolSculpting uses cooling plates to freeze the fat in localized areas. Let me start off our first Skinny of 2015 with a heart-felt thank you to all of you who came to see me and my associates in 2014. Now in our 18th year, we know that it is the trust and confidence you place in us to meet your medical and cosmetic skin care needs that keep our practice growing. I also want to express our appreciation to those of you who made our first full year in Katy a big success.

2015 begins with two fillers starring in their new roles. In January, Bellafill® ( formerly Artefill®) received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for treatment of acne scars. We participated in the clinical trial that helped secure this approval and thus know firsthand this treatment’s effectiveness. Restylane® Silk also just made its debut as the only FDA-approved product to enhance lips and smooth lip lines. Read more about these fillers in Dr. Peterson’s article.

We welcome Pedro Martinez, a long-time SBA’er, in his new role as an aesthetician. He is splitting his time between our Galleria and Katy offices. Pedro has been a patient favorite in his previous roles at our practice, and he’s already proving to be a hit among his patients in the spa. He is big on CoolSculpting® and shares his view on this technology which he offers at both locations.

MEET PEDRO MARTINEZ

OUR NEWEST AESTHETICIAN Pedro has been a practicing licensed aesthetician since 2014. Prior to working as an aesthetician in our spa, he served as a Patient Care Coordinator and Front Office Team Lead for Suzanne Bruce and Associates. He is a member of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association and Society of Dermatology Skincare Specialists.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new filler in our anti-aging arsenal designed specifically for lips and lip lines. Restylane® Silk was cleared last summer by the FDA for use in lip augmentation and correction of perioral rhytides (lines around the mouth) but only recently came on the market. In fact, we were one of only two practices in the Houston/Katy area to receive Restylane Silk to try on our patients prior to its official launch. We found this new filler safe and effective.

Restylane Silk is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar that is naturally present in your skin. What makes it unique is its small, smooth particle size which is unique amongst all available HA fillers. You can think of Restylane Silk as compared to sand. If we see a very fine, shallow, thin crack in the ground, the best way to fill it would be with sand not a larger material.

Since Restylane Silk is composed of small HA spheres, we inject it using a special technique to safely place the filler very high (towards the surface) in the lips and/or the skin surrounding the lips. This results in an enhanced effect on the lips, which creates a smooth, “lipstick-like” result and last on average 6-8 months.

needles, multiple treatments or recovery time and doesn’t require restricted sun exposure. The Ultherapy® Décolletage Treatment has recently been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to non-invasively treat the chest to improve lines and wrinkles on the décolletage.

For many, the chest is a neglected area that frequently needs rejuvenation as we age. Even women who are careful to apply sunscreen to their faces every day are not always good about applying it to their décolletage on a daily basis. The result is thinning of the skin and vertical wrinkles on the chest over time. The Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment uses signature imaging and micro-focused ultrasound technology to create focal areas of heating where desired beneath the surface of the skin. The heat causes collagen fiber to contract, resulting in skin tightening and triggers the production of new collagen and elastin which gradually smooth chest wrinkles. Results are visible after about 3 months.

The procedure on the décolletage is very tolerable with the application of a topical anesthetic one hour before the procedure. The treatment only takes about 30 minutes and can be done any time of the year

with little to no downtime. There might be some mild redness and swelling but they resolve quickly. The results can be enhanced by using a

collagen-building product, such as Nectifirm®, before and after the procedure.

The award-winning Ultherapy procedure has been on the market since 2009 when it was first cleared by

the FDA for achieving a non-invasive eyebrow lift. In 2013, Ultherapy received “The Best In-Office
