The Skeletal System
The skeletal system consists of:
1. Bones
2. Cartilage
3. Connective tissue
***There are about 206 bones in an adult
Bone Functions
1. Protection• Heart/ lungs: ribs• Spinal cord: vertebrae• Brain: skull
2. Storage• Bones store minerals that help muscles and
nerves work• Long bones store fat for energy
Bone Functions continued
3. Movement• Skeletal muscles pull on bones to help you move
4. Blood cell formation
• Some bones are filled with marrow, which makes blood cells.
Internal Structure of Bone
Parts of Bone
• Compact bone: No visible spaces, contains blood vessels
• Spongy bone: Has open spaces, but provides strength and support

• Red Marrow: Makes red and white blood cells
• Yellow Marrow: Stores fat in long bones
• Cartilage: Flexible connective tissue that is sometimes replaced by bone
Osteoblasts
• Cells that make bone by depositing connective tissue and minerals
