PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT’’SS RREEPPOORRTT This past year has been very challenging for a new President in the chair for the first time. I must acknowledge the assistance given to me by many members of the BWHA hockey fraternity, both past and present. The 2000 season was a very busy and intense season to say the least. With the growth of not only the game of hockey and the statutory changes required in the current business environment, the year kept us on our toes. AIR NEW ZEALAND GOLDEN OLDIES FESTIVAL – OCTOBER 1999

The year started with a fabulous event hosted in October at Downey Park – “Air New Zealand Golden Oldies Hockey Festival”. What a fabulous event and with the added bonus of some monies to be made for the coffers. Prior to the commencement of my position as President I was a Committee Member of this Event and the Co-Ordinator for BWHA organising the Venue. Ten fields were provided in good order at no charge with BWHA receiving the rights to food and beverage to supply for the event. The atmosphere during this event is something that will live long in our memories, with themed outlets, such as the ‘Tucker Box’ the ‘The Shirt Shack’ and ‘The Cooee Café’ adding a purely Australian theme. The support from the business community for this event was nothing short of fabulous which showed that if we treat our sport with the professionalism it deserves we will ultimately achieve more. The names associated with this event were the likes of Golden Circle, Carlton and United Breweries, Tyrell’s Wines, Madura Tea, Queensland Cancer Fund and the list goes on. Well done to all BWHA and supporters who came assisted and experienced BWHA hospitality at it’s best – Well done. The commitment to a more modern and update Constitution and by-laws which was initially commenced by Ronda Nix in her years as President, continued to be worked upon. This committee was capably lead by Mr. Keith Tidey who continued to manage a very vital job for the future development of BWHA. The new structure for BWHA will commence in the coming season of 2001 and I look forward to implementing this new Constitution. The secretary, Jenny Heron has documented the happenings of our Association, so I will not repeat her report. I do wish to thank Jenny, Mary Cockings and the Management Committee, Junior Association, sub-committees, officials, coaches, umpires and staff of BWHA for their time and efforts given to our Association. Many people put in countless amounts of hours in a myriad of positions and duties for our Association and without these people we would not continue to be the best in the state as named at the Hockey Queensland dinner in March of this year. I would like to personally thank Jenny Tidey, for coming out of retirement and the assistance of Joyce Proctor for not only their help but also their wealth of knowledge. Joyce has committed to return next year and continue to update our archives, thank you. With our interest in the State Hockey Centre and Legends Community Sporting Club, I would like to thank Mary Cockings for her time spent as our delegate to these Boards prior to my appointment. There is no doubt that in all areas of our sport of hockey that improvements can be made, but I must stress the need to see the ‘Big Picture’ the longer term vision is probably the most important. The work being done for the future of our sport by both Boards at the State Hockey Centre and Legends

Community Sporting Club is focused on how we can help and support the game of hockey for both development and financial objectives. To all our Brisbane Players, Umpires, Coaches and Managers who have received representative honours in the last twelve months, Congratulations. We as an Association have a depth of Players which will be continued to be recognised at higher representative levels in the coming years. This is not by chance but by development and commitment, our Regional Coaching Director Sharyn Simpson has played an integral part in this and our thanks must be given. Thank you Sharyn, the future of hockey is based on the planning and implementation of programs for all our ages with an emphasis on identifying talent. With the introduction of the new Premier League we will see our game change for the better with the focus being the ‘Best in the State’, chance to shine. QUEENSLAND HOCKEY PROMOTIONS

With the thought of our new Premier League in mind, you must remember that these events cannot happen without Marketing, Sponsors and Promotion. During my first year on Management, 1999, the creation of Queensland Hockey Promotions came into being. This has been the amalgamation of Hockey Queensland, The State Hockey Centre and Brisbane Hockey Association. Our commitment to this venture is ten (10) percent, as shown in the statement of accounts. Heading up this enormous challenge of not only trying to merge the plans but the personalities of these groups has been Jason Greenhalgh. Jason has come to us from a sporting marketing background with experience in Queensland Rugby Union and the Broncos Rugby League Club. The efforts that have been directed to achieve an increase in sponsorship have been challenging to date and perseverance has been the key. His efforts to gain print, radio, television coverage has been a trial. We had for the first season a Radio sponsorship with FM104 who weekly covered our games at the State Hockey Centre and an ongoing commitment if we supplied information, press coverage in our newspaper the Courier Mail. All we had to do was fill out our weekly Media Reports to give him ‘fuel’ for the stories. We hope to build on this and continue next year with the potential that the Olympic success achieved this year may open a few more doors. Thank you Jason for your efforts to date. To our Olympic Players and our Umpire – Michelle Arnold, Congratulations. The Sydney 2000 Olympics will certainly live in the hearts of our hockey fraternity for many years to come. To all those many members, who have become engaged, married and welcomed a new addition to their family, my congratulations and best wishes. To those who have suffered bereavement or illness, my heartfelt sympathy. In conclusion I wish everyone a Happy Festive Season. I welcome all those new members who have volunteered their time for the new committee and look forward to a fabulous and exciting 2001 season. Robin Roberts President

SSEECCRREETTAARRYY’’SS RREEPPOORRTT In the middle of the Golden Oldies Tournament being held at Downey Park, our AGM was on Tuesday 26 October, what a great night to have it. This year we had an abundance of voting with Constitutional Changes and for the first time in many years, voting was required for the senior Management Committee and also Turf Fixture and Grading, the Constitutional Committee and the Under 18 Selection Committee. Meg Brodie was thanked for her 18 months as President and Robin Roberts was welcomed as our new President. Congratulations to all who were voted onto BWHA committees. Joyce Proctor was presented with a Life Membership for her continuous service to BWHA. Joyce has held various positions within the BWHA Association for over 15 years. Congratulations Joyce and we hope you continue to be seen around Downey Park for many years to come. Golden Oldies – what a week! A great white marque was the full length of the bottom end of Field 1 with a blue open marque between the clubhouse and the public loos. Boy, the park looked great! On Monday morning the opening ceremony and the march past was full of wonderful characters, colourful uniforms and 1200 people from overseas, interstate and locals here to party and have fun. Thank you to the small band of volunteers who worked until they dropped (many of who are our Life Members), some at Downey Park from 6.00 am until 10.00 – 11.00 pm each night. Please read the full Golden Oldies report for all the details on this very successful week. The 1999 Monday Masters Competition could have been mistaken for a marathon season, due to bad weather, turf unavailability, long weekends etc this season did not finish until the end of November. The final was played between Easts and Ascot. A very fast, exciting game saw Ascot win 2-1. Thank you to Kym Ireland and Briony Hollitt for umpiring the final. An evening was held at Crushers to thank Alyson Skuse for her work at the BWHA office and wish her all the best for the future. Also a night was held at Legends for the management committee to say thank you for their year of hard work. Seven clubs were successful in gaining grants for Player Development. Congratulations and thank you to Sharyn Simpson and Sue McLatchey for helping the clubs to put together the seminar, paperwork, requirements needed to obtain these grants. At the Downey Park clubhouse, an evening was held to thank Kerrie Richards for her many years of work as the Satellite Coach and wish her the best for her continued support of hockey. Kerrie is going to concentrate on her family’s sporting needs (3 girls) and her continued support of hockey at Brisbane State High School. Also thank you to Kathy Duggan, who has resigned from her fulltime position, for her unending support to BWHA and hope that she will continue on a part-time basis into the future. The all day meeting in January went off very well, with the new Management Committee being advised of their portfolios. A big shock to some and the workload started. The calendar was looked into and found as usual not to have many spare spots to fit all the requirements in. During January the South East Queensland League was held, with BWHA hosting the finals at the State Hockey Centre. This year a new team was welcomed from Tweed and we hope they continue

to participate in this event. The final was played between North Brisbane Swifts and the Gold Coast Gypsies, the Swifts winning. Thank you to all who participated and to the players who were part of the draft system. This event seems to be getting bigger and better each year. Full details later in this report. At the Hockey Queensland dinner this year, Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association was honoured with the following awards – The “Association of the Year”, “Volunteer of the Year” & “Umpire of the Year” Lyn Thomas was named “Volunteer of the Year” for her many years of tireless voluntary work both with BWHA and HQ. Michele Arnold was again named “Umpire of the Year” and this year Michele will be umpiring at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Congratulations to all involved in BWHA, because without our many volunteers we would not be eligible for the above awards. What a start to Season 2000. With an early start at the beginning of March so all fixtures could be finalised before the Olympics, it set the scene for a very rushed beginning. First, we could use Redcliffe and so the first draft of fixtures were completed. Then, we couldn’t use Redcliffe and so another draft was done. And in true hockey fashion, we were asked to view the Redcliffe field and ascertain as to its use, and BWHA Management with the support of Hockey Queensland could use Redcliffe in a limited capacity, another set of fixtures. Then after draft 4, the BWHA Turf Fixture & Grading Committee were advised that the Insurance Underwriters had withdrawn their support, so draft 5, it was then decided that even if Redcliffe came back on line we were NOT going to do the fixtures again. Hence the fixture book was available around Easter, only six weeks after the start of the season. During the earlier part of the season, the Table Committee was in the process of employing office staff. We employed two young ladies Therese Barber and Amy Little – welcome ladies and we hope your stay is a very pleasant one. Working Bees were well attended at Downey Park and Rasey Park in March, thank you to the clubs who supported and supplied the many willing hands to get the fields, nets, buildings and clubhouse ready for the start of our 2000 season. The grass season commenced at Downey Park on Saturday 1st April, and for the first time in many years it was a fine day. A bar was set up on the pavers under the building for our players to use at the end of the day. It went very well. Afternoon tea was supplied for the many Life Members who are still able to venture out. Thank you to Joyce Proctor for her usual grand spread. The lights at Rasey Park were up and ready on the 3rd April and QWASC (Qld Women’s Amateur Sports Council) continued towards their grant application for lights on Field 10 Noble Street. These lights were finally finished for the preliminary final week. The lights on field 10 are very bright and maybe in the future we’ll be able to look at a night summer grass hockey season. This year an Intermediate Division was started on the grass fields at Colmslie played in the 12.30 timeslot. This division was set up to help alleviate the problems between the Juniors and GPS

competition, so clubs would not have to forfeit games. Hopefully next year we might have some more teams. The first double header was the week before Easter, with no fixtures being played over the Easter break and also the May long weekend, due to the Open Championship being played at the Tweed. Then followed another double header to get the season up and running. Our Brisbane Open teams competed at the Open State Championships at the Tweed and played very well, both teams won their respective divisions. BWHA had 8 players and 5 shadows named in the Under 21 and 11 players named in the Scorchers Squad. This year drug testing was required at the Open Championship. One of our Brisbane 1 players was subjected to this test – of course she passed with flying colours. It was a shame the young lady in question found out about it in the middle of the game, not very conducive to good sportsmanship and left her feeling worried as a few of the older, experienced players in the team had over exaggerated what to expect. As per the norm with hockey fixtures, when the teams were named a couple of our Division 1 clubs requested changes to fixtures because they had 3 or more players absent during the Under 21 Championships. Brisbane senior and junior fixtures continued each Saturday with the fields being dry, hard and a little bumpy. The end of the first round and the Presidents Cup winners were announced. Next year we might have time to play these games on a spare Sunday, we’ll have to wait and see what the SHC has been booked for, but with the Olympics over there might be some spare weekends. Over the June long weekend the Under 18 State Championships was held at the State Hockey Centre, and in true typical Brisbane weather (when we are holding a State Title) it rained. Brisbane had 10 players named in the Queensland Under 18 team. Congratulations girls. A full report is in the Records Section of this report. At the June Council Meeting Jason Leslie, Jason Greenhalgh and Jean Reagan attended and gave all a run down on what is happening at the State Hockey Club, QHP (Qld Hockey Promotions) and the Legends Community Sportsclub Inc. This was very informative and helped to allay a few fears as to where the Centre is going. Veterans nominations closed on the 13 May, due to the cost of the Mackay trip, our numbers were down. The Gold Coast Southern Cross was used by the selectors to finalise team selections and our three teams then started their training sessions. The flight to Mackay was good and we were greeted by fine, cold weather, everyone who purchased the new BWHA anorak was very thankful. Our three teams all played in the finals with our Division 1 team beating the Gold Coast. Congratulations to the teams, players, coaches, managers, umpires and selectors on a great job well done when the general consensus was we wouldn’t do very well. Downey Park Minor Premiers & Presidents Cup winners were presented with their trophies at the clubhouse after fixtures on Saturday 5 August. Thank you to those clubs who stayed on to receive their shields and bottle of champagne. Sunday 6 August whilst the Under 11 Southern Cross was being at held at Downey Park, a 20 year anniversary lunch for Southern Cross Tournaments was held in the clubhouse. Representatives from Gold Coast, Tweed, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba and Brisbane attended and a great

9

time was had reminiscing about what had transpired during the 20 years. Thank you to Jenny Tidey and her small band of helpers for organising the lunch. Friday 25 August was the BWHA Awards Dinner held at The Greek Club, South Brisbane. This year over 230 people attended. The theme for the night was the Olympics and eight ladies involved in BWHA who were Torch Bearers attended – Sue Brough, Alison Crane, Julene Grant, Rosanna Papparlardo, Daphne Pirie, Heather

Scraggs, Sharyn Simpson, Leah Willis.

The following awards were presented – BWHA Player of the Year Leanne Hammond Commercial Rookie of the Year Renee Higman University Players Player Di Burton Norths Division 2 Player Tina Blake Ascot Division 3 Player Zoe Kellermeyer Easts Highest Coaching Honours Margaret Dilger St Andrews Highest Umpiring Honours Michele Arnold Ascot Congratulations to these young ladies, well done. Marilyn Chatfield and her small band of willing workers did an admirable job making this evening the success it was. During the 2000 season we lost one of our Life Members Betty Watson after a long battle with cancer. Betty’s friendly face and always helpful hands will be sadly missed by the hockey fraternity. BWHA Life Member Janet Viertel also lost her husband Keith during 2000. Keith had for many years lent his financial and auditing knowledge and expertise to hockey throughout Queensland and Australia. Keith was a willing worker at BWHA whenever asked, our deepest sympathies to Janet at this time, Keith will be greatly missed. Also Fred Husteed from Bulimba passed away, Fred was one of our first Southern Cross coaches and was still coaching an Under 11 Bulimba team up until he was forced into hospital. To everyone who has experienced a loss this year our sympathies go out to you. Our Judiciary Committee only met twice this year. A special thank you to all players for making this the one committee we don’t want to see with a heavy workload. 2000 Hockey Season was another difficult year with many outside bookings at the State Hockey Centre that influenced our smooth running season. On the whole I think it worked out well. Congratulations to all players, managers, coaches, umpires, technical personnel and officials who represented BWHA at State, National and International levels. Thank you for upholding our image of a great hockey centre. This year the BWHA Office has had some difficulties with a few changes in staff. Thank you to Therese and Amy who have left us to further their careers. Kathy Duggan and Leesa Gray have stepped in to hold down the fort and we thank them sincerely for all their time and effort in getting the office back on an even keel and for the smooth transition to get the Annual General Meeting voting and Report out on time. Thank you Kathy and Leesa. The small band of people who make up the Grounds Committee has worked hard on very dry fields. John Bigg for all the little extras he does around the park, keeping the potholes at bay, the nets in

good repair, the buildings painted and burglar proof and generally keeping an eye on Downey Park. Jenny Tidey and Bev Broadfoot for all their work. We all thank you for all the time and effort you give so willingly. Thank you. Our volunteer committees have seen the smooth running of another season and for this I thank all BWHA committees, for without you and your expertise we would not be able to run so efficiently. The Constitution Committee continues to meet and hopefully the new constitution (Rules of Association) and by-laws should be ready to incorporate in 2001. Keith Tidey and his small band will be endeavouring to have an easier year next year if all goes according to plan. Our Volunteer of the Year, Lyn Thomas, for without her knowledge, help and commitment, I personally would have had a much harder year, a very sincere thank you. This year we welcomed new members to our management team and I thank them and the ‘oldies’ for another successful year. To my fellow Executive Members thank you for your support and help throughout the year. Schweppes, Streets and Country Bake once again continue to support BWHA and for this we thank them. Thank you to all clubs, their officials and players for their friendship, support and continued cooperation throughout the hockey season. I’m sure this will continue. To the new Brisbane secretary I wish you well and hope you enjoy your term, it will be very rewarding and give you an insight into the hockey world and how much enjoyment you can get out of being at the ground level. Good luck to all the new BWHA personnel and hope the 2001 season is another dry and successful year. I hope I haven’t forgotten to thank anyone, if I have please accept my apologies and know that you are all thanked equally. Enjoy the off season and hope to see everyone back at hockey next year. Jenny Heron Hon Secretary

TTRREEAASSUURREERR’’SS RREEPPOORRTT My report, as usual, has to be submitted before the audited set of accounts are completed because of the short length of time available from the end of our financial year and our AGM. The set of accounts will be distributed at the AGM. I wish to thank all committees and management for the assistance and co-operation in containing expenditure and sincere thanks to all club officials for their courtesy throughout the season. Thank you to all canteen staff especially Jean and Des and also thanks to Caroline and Nigel in the bar. Thanks to Jenny Tidey for her efforts in organising staff in both canteens and attending to the many problems associated with the canteens.

Jim Northcott has left us to go to Japan, for the time being, but thanks Jim for all your work in the hockey shop. It has not been a great year as far as profits are concerned but this was mainly caused by restrictive purchasing powers. All profits go to our Junior section this is something that has to be addressed in the 2001 season but I feel something will happen in the 2001 season to show a large increase in rent. It will depend on QWASC and the Brisbane City Council. John Bigg has done a marvellous job on the fields with the time and money available. Thanks John. As outlined last year we purchased a new mower for $18000, painted the clubhouse inside and outside and repaired the paving in front of the clubhouse. This year we upgraded the floodlights at Rasey Park (our share of the costs was $11800) Sincere thanks to the Brisbane City Council and Department of Sport and Recreation for their continued invaluable support in assisting us to do this work. Schweppes and Streets are still supporting us in various ways and I thank them sincerely. Before everyone gets carried away with the figure of $132993.43 showing in our bank balance or cash book, the following explanation will bring everyone down to earth. Money Paid to us in advance: $19 440.28 Replay Loan $10 000.00 Our share of cost of office renovations $ 9 000.00 Payments of house loan due Dec 2000 $ 7 000.00 Our share of grant for field renovations $ 5 550.00 Total $50 990.28 We also need to re-carpet the clubhouse $ 8 000.00 (present carpet has been down for 15 years) Urgently need storage shed for mower etc $ 6 000.00 (on higher ground) Total $64 990.28 Which leaves us with a figure of $68 003.15. As many people can confirm, $68 000 is the magic figure I try to come up with at the end of each season to enable us to keep the association running until our new season starts. Thanks to Julie Bennett, our accountant/auditor for her time and patience with the GST problems. I have left the best to last and that is to thank Kathy Duggan because without her expertise on the computer and knowledge of out accounting systems I would be completely lost. I trust you will all be back next season and I wish you a merry christmas and a very prosperous new year. Mary Cockings Hon. Treasurer.

GGRROOUUNNDDSS CCOOMMMMIITTTTEEEE RREEPPOORRTT 2000 Season started with well-prepared fields considering the limited preparation time available due to the early start of the season. The preparation including the marking of fields was an enormous task for so few and many thanks for their efforts. Raking grass from fields was thankfully unnecessary this year following our acquisition of mower with dump bin. Our usual working bees were held pre season at Rasey and Downey Parks and thanks to all clubs that came and gave of their time and energy. During the latter part of the season, we also purchased a spray boom and this will enable us to control bindi and other noxious weeds on the park. The training lights at Rasey Park have been upgraded and our thanks go to State Government Sports and Recreation Department for their valuable assistance in granting us the money to enable this work to be carried out. Also thank you to John Bowkett for the many free of charge things he has done for us this season. Training lights from Field 2 Downey Park were removed as well and new lights installed which will enable our clubs to train with adequate lighting for the first time in years. The Q.W.A.S.C. were instrumental in obtaining a grant from State Government Sports and Recreation Department to enable this work to be carried out on Field 10 and the cost was $16 000 grant plus $16 000 from Q.W.A.S.C. We wish to thank them very much. The BCC will be starting on stage one of the public car park in December this year. Provision will be made for 80 car parks and stage two “hopefully!” will be done early in 2001. Also the BCC are going to carry out at their cost the renovation of two hockey fields (four softball diamonds), once again “Hopefully!” before the start of hockey season. We wish to thank Sharon Wyatt form the BCC for her continued support of our association and the other tenant bodies. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my committee and in particular Jenny Tidey and John Bigg. I really don’t think the members of this association realise the amount of work John does on this park and without his conscientious efforts on behalf of BWHA we would be completely lost. If I have forgotten to thank anybody else in this report, please forgive me. Hoping the long break before next season commences sees you all refreshed and rejuvenated and keen to join the ranks of our grounds committee. Have a safe and happy season. See you in 2001. Turf Turf fixtures for 2000 commenced on the weekend of the 3rd of March, and finished on the 9th of September, just before the Olympics. This year’s gradings remained the same as the previous year, Division 1 – 8 teams, Division 2 – 10 teams, Division 3 – 10 teams. Divisions 1 & 2 had the same clubs as the previous season, but there were 13 clubs who applied for division 3, so grading matches were played in February. Redcliffe 2 challenged University 3 for 3rd division and were unsuccessful, and a new club, QUT applied for division 3 and was denied a grading match by BWHA management. The remaining clubs, St Andrews 3, Bulimba 2, Norths 2 and University 3 played in the grading games and University was the unsuccessful team. Monday Masters commenced on the 27th March and continued through to the 11th of September. There was an increase of one team, and when more turf time became available at Redcliffe, Sunshine Coast was included, bringing a total of 8 teams to Monday Masters. A new grade was introduced this year at Colmslie on the grass fields, and was named “INTERMEDIATE”. The grade consisted of Secondary school age students, no older than 18yrs and always played in the 12.30pm time slot. The 6 teams played 3 rounds of fixtures commencing on the 8th April and their grand final was played at Downey Park on the 2nd of September along with the other grass field finals. This was a trial year and proved to be reasonably successful and hopefully the number of teams will increase next year. President’s Cup was unable to be a separate final once again because of the shortage of turf time, so the teams finishing on top of the point’s table at the completion of the first round automatically became the winners. The fixture and grading committee tried to pre-empt players away in various teams and schedule fixtures accordingly but we still had a lot of requests to reschedule matches and those games were played midweek. I wish to thank the BWHA management for their support and the members of my committee for their tolerance and making themselves available whenever necessary. Marilyn Chatfield - Convenor

Grass The 2000 season started with a number of challenges to the Fixture and Grading Committee. An extra team had nominated for DP1 and there was also an insufficient number of vets teams to make a vets grade viable. Therefore, some decisions were made on the grading of teams that were difficult but, nonetheless, these had to be made. The final points table for each of the grades proved that, once again, our gradings were accurate. Thanks must go to each and every player for playing without fuss in those grades where their teams were graded.

Thanks also to my committee, Pip Ahern and Liz Lobb. We have been together now for a few years and this makes the job easier. Both of these ladies contributed an extra effort this year as I was unavailable at the end of the season. A special thanks, as usual, must also go to Lyn Thomas who reviews our decisions and fixtures and provides invaluable advice. This is my last year on the Fixture and Grading Committee. After five years, I think it is time I moved aside and let a fresh mind assume the position. Again, thanks to the girls on the Committee and good luck to the new members. CCOONNSSTTIITTUUTTIIOONN CCOOMMMMIITTTTEEEE RREEPPOORRTT Well the Constitution (Rules of Association) has been completed and passed by the Association. The Department of Fair Trading has also approved the new Rules of Association. The Board of Management structure of the new Rules will come into effect at the Annual General Meeting of this year. The new by-laws of the Association has been nearly completed and we hope to be able to invite Clubs to comment early next year after we forward a draft copy to all Clubs on the completion hopefully later this year. We ask all clubs to read the new by-laws, which have not been drastically changed but mainly upgraded, with the exception of the Judiciary Process. On receipt of the draft copy please forward in writing any changes your Club feels is needed, to the Association to be able to be discussed at the meeting to follow. As the new Rules of Association do not now have the Sub-Committee structure as in the past these have been called on the old structure until the new structure is approved in the new by-laws, plus any which was mentioned in the new Rules of Association. I would like to thank the help and assistance given by the fellow members of the Committee, Mary Cockings, Ronda Nix and newcomer Jenny Heron. Thank go also to Sue Anderson who had to resign due to work commitments thank you for your help. Thanks also go to Association President Robin Roberts as Board of Management liaison for your assistance and help given in the meetings. Thankfully next year we hope this committee’s workload should be easier. Keith Tidey -Convenor.

BWHA hosted the Under 18 Women’s Championship at the State Hockey Centre over the June long weekend (June 10, 11 & 12). As seems to be the norm for us hosting a championship, the rains also arrived (perhaps we should market ourselves as rainmakers). The weather did not deter us and the full complement of games was completed. The SHC venue and facilities makes hosting a championship a delight, the excellent centre is available and the SHC staff are most helpful. We had hoped that a Brisbane win would be the icing on the cake for the weekend but this was not to be, unfortunately Brisbane 1 lost the Division 1 final. Full results are published in the results section of this report.

Thanks to Hockey Queensland for their assistance, support and guidance with the championship Our Championship Director was Ronda Nix, assisted by Faye Wastell. Again this duo ran a very smooth and efficient championship – thank you for you service. A championship cannot be run without many helpers and thanks must go to these people – Marg Dilger, Lisa Jones, Ruth Grim, Joyce Proctor, June Snarski, Jenny Tidey, Mary Cockings, Robin Roberts, Lyn Thomas, Liz Grimes and Krystelle Leeming. Thanks must go to all the clubs who supplied tasty delights to enable us to be the consummate host to our visitors. This year BWHA had championship souvenir shirts manufactured with AC/DC for sale – all shirts were sold at the championship and another order for 75 was taken during the championship and posted out. Jenny Tidey must get special commendation for her sales effort for selling the shirts. Her marketing spiel was the highlight of the weekend. Well done Jenny. Action photo shots were taken of players during the championship and were available for purchase. Many players took advantage of this service. A raffle for a TV and a mountain bike was run over the weekend. Hosting a championship at the SHC is an additional expense for BWHA. Each year our cost in hosting a championship is reducing. When the SHC / Legends Club become more established then our cost should be totally defrayed. Congratulations to the winning teams and thanks for the support and encouragement, which we received from the visiting managers and coaches. Congratulations to those players named in the State Under 18 squad. Sue Mclean

CCAANNTTEEEENN RREEPPOORRTT Hi everyone. The end of another season and a dry one thank goodness. It was a very pleasing result to the end of the season as we had a profit of approximately $23000.00. While this was down on the profit we made last year by approximately $2000.00 it was still a good result considering we absorbed the GST for two months. Rasey Park Canteen was a concern. I think this is mainly because Minkey and Modifieds are back at Downey Park. I would like to thank Jean Hooper and Des O’Connor for their efforts throughout the season, not only on fixture days but during the week with cleaning etc. Also a big thank you to all the young ladies who worked in the canteen. It should be easier next season in relation to the new cash registers. Once again I would like to note that it makes a very big difference to sales when we only have senior fixtures at Downey Park. I know at times this is unavoidable but perhaps junior and senior fixture committees could look at this problem next season. Wishing everyone a very merry christmas and a happy new year. Please come back in 2001. Jenny Tidey.

HHOOUUSSEE CCOOMMMMIITTTTEEEE RREEPPOORRTT The 1999 season was certainly not the smoothest, but with the help of the ever-faithful ‘volunteers’, we managed to muddle through somehow. As a result of hosting the Golden Oldies Festival at the end of 1999, the clubhouse was given a bit of a ‘spruce up’, including interior painting, kitchen divides, repaving and the addition of ceiling fans for the hotter beginning and end of seasons. Other additions during the season were a new deep freeze and trophy cabinets to store the ever-growing number of trophies won by our rep teams. Bridge continues to be our steady clubhouse income earner both during and off season, with a few bookings from elsewhere. The GST only imposed itself for the latter part of the season, so the effects were only short term with some prices even coming down slightly or at least staying the same. My thanks to Mary Cockings for being so patient during the implementation of the new cash register and having to deal with our ‘four thumbs’ effort in using it. Thanks must also go to Joyce Proctor, Robin Roberts, Jenny and Keith Tidey for staying to help lock up most nights throughout the season and the other helpers who filled in the gaps on other nights. Sincerest thanks must go to Nigel Roberts who stepped in to tend the bar for the most part of the season and created a few different treats for after game snacks. Thanks also to Tony Aleksic and Steven Heron for also helping out when asked. Last of all, thanks to the loyal players who come up and have a drink or three, to talk over the game, refereeing etc. Hope to see you all again in 2001. Caroline Schomberg - Convenor

EEQQUUIIPPMMEENNTT && UUNNIIFFOORRMMSS OOFFFFIICCEERR RREEPPOORRTT Once again it has been a very chaotic year with uniforms. The number of teams going away both to competitions and Southern Cross it is nearly impossible to keep everyone happy. I had one “hiccup” with socks but learned afterwards that some Managers had kept a supply with them – which resulted in some girls having to borrow socks. I hope this doesn’t occur again. I think that the acquisition of the anoraks was very popular - quite a few of the players appeared not to take them off at all. This year we have lost quite a few skirts, so I ask everyone to check with anyone in your club who may have had uniforms, to check once again – it’s off season so the house and car will probably get cleaned. My thanks to the people who have helped me over the years and I will be only too pleased to help whoever takes over next season. I would suggest next year some consideration be given to purchasing new uniforms for the under 15’s. This year we bought new shirts for the Under 11’s and the parents bought shorts for them. Annual Report 2000

REGIONAL COACHING DIRECTOR (RCD)

PPLLAAYYEERR DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT

It was a year with mixed results achieved at the State Championships. The most promising result was that we contested all Division One Grand-finals from U/11 to Veterans. The end result saw BWHA successful in 3 out of 6 State Championship finals. 1. U/13 Division One State Champions 2. Open Division One State Champions 3. Veterans Division One State Champions Other BWHA representative teams that need to be congratulated on their performance at the State Championships are as follows: 1. U/18 No 3 Runners-up Division 2 2. U/11 No 2 Winners Division 2 3. U/11 No 4 Winners Division 3. 4. Open Division 2 State Champions 5. U/13 No 3 Team competing in Division One BWHA teams achieved their best results in pool matches but unfortunately were unable to continue form and finish the championship with a winning performance in the Grand Final. I look forward to next year giving more attention in our preparation phase, to pressure hockey (Finals) and set-plays. I have serious concerns about the future format of the State Championships in the under age divisions. Despite the format played this year, favouring BWHA teams I find it impossible to support or endorse this format. This format so obviously puts undue stress on young developing players. The number of matches required to play and the obvious mismatching of teams’ abilities often resulted in a demoralising situation for many teams. BWHA views have been presented to HQ and hopefully a more appropriate format is decided upon at the upcoming Annual General Meeting. There was an increase in the number of players presenting with serious overuse injuries. After investigation it was discovered that the cause was often due to a lack of immediate and follow-up treatment. We will be more alert to this next year and monitor the physical workload some players are undertaking. BWHA was successful in achieving a record number of players selected in State Squads and Best 16. BWHA players in squads have doubled over a period of 4 years. Congratulations! to all players for their hard work.

Other player development opportunities contested during 2000 were: 1. U/15 Team participated in the Southern Skies Tournament, and was placed 3rd. 2. U/18 Team played against a visiting USA Team. It was fortunate that we able to participate in these two events as we were unable to attend the U/16 Div2 Championships this year due to a change of dates for the Olympics. The change of dates meant that the event was run at the same time as State U/15 Championships in July. I look forward to next year when the dates will revert back to October and BWHA will have the opportunity to nominate 2 teams and arrest back the championship title. There has been an improvement in the link between BWHA, QAS and Hockey Queensland. It was encouraging to see QAS Coach Des King initiating and giving time to the Under 18 State Squad Players for extra training. We look forward to the continuation and expansion of the program in the future. Apart from the Development Programs and Selection trials held for U/18,U/15.U/13 and U/11 age divisions further extension programs were conducted during the off-season for the following: 1. 20 x U/13 players, 3 week, 6 session skill development at the SHC.

2. 20 x U/15 players, 4 weeks, 7 sessions. (Content; Specialist skills sessions, Fitness testing, Nutrition, Speed development, Sports Psychology)

3. 20 U/18 players. Skills sessions Feb.2000, Indoor Hockey and Practice matches. Unfortunately, our Satellite coach for the last 5 years Kerrie Richards was forced to retire due to extra work commitments. Thanks to Kerrie on behalf of all those players she has assisted through the years. I hope that Kerrie will not be a stranger to our program forever, and I wish her and her family all the best. With the retirement of Kerrie, BWHA have been very fortunate to secure the services of experienced players Tammy Cole, Kelly Free and Meagan Thomas in the role of satellite coaches to the BWHA Development Programs. I look forward to working with them over the next 12 months. Other coaches to lend support to the program are Nikki Taylor, Kym Thomasson and Kerrie Schmidt.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

I am sorry to report on the demise of the player Development Fundraising Committee. Despite the hard work of Dick Roebuck and his committee’s drive and determination to sell the committee to new members it has been largely inactive during 2000. We are all working longer hours to pay for the ever-increasing costs of everything, which in turn impacts greatly on the available time we have to volunteer our services. Hopefully, we will be able to use the valuable knowledge gained by the members, to support future fundraising opportunities for the Player Development Program.

CCOOAACCHH DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT

We were able to attract a good number of coaches nominating for BWHA representative teams. Hopefully, we will be able to encourage more coaches and support staff willing to put their name

forward next year. There are many very capable club coaches and support staff doing excellent work within their clubs whom we are hoping to attract to BWHA positions in 2001. With the assistance of the coaches association and support from BWHA we are constantly looking for ways of assisting coaches to further develop their skills. We aim to provide through meetings, workshops, newsletters and coaching maillots a wide range of coach education activities that address the diversity of needs coaches require for their continued growth and improvement. They are all volunteers who dedicate an enormous time to their role as BWHA Representative coaches. I would like to congratulate and thank them all. 4 Level One courses were conducted during the year.

• 2 Clubs North’s and Pine Hills at their clubrooms

• 1 Mt Gravatt Campus Tafe students

• 1 Downey Park and SHC for 22 BWHA coaches This year I was able to offer the courses in a variety of ways that best suited the individual clubs and participants needs. This was very much experimental for myself and I am still evaluating the outcomes to decide what the ideal presentation is. Level O was also provided for all new comers to hockey and first year coaches. The Coaches Association existed entirely due to the absolute belief its members have in how important its role is within the BWHA Association. A view shared by many club coaches and myself. There was a much healthier activity level this year and the association was able to conduct a successful selector workshop and produce two Coaching Maillot Booklets. From the selectors workshop it is envisaged that we will be able to design a documents that will give assistance and guidance to Representative selectors and Club Selectors. A big thank-you to Kym Roberson, Sue McLatchey, Sue Brough and Julie Dwyer for their continued support and belief.

SCHOOLS

The role the Coaching Directors have in this area is undergoing review in BWHA and Hockey Queensland. The results will hopefully find the best delivery of our sport to schools. The following questions need to be considered when preparing School-Club links. 1. Recruitment strategies by exposure and promotion through Expos. 2. Education - Providing Level O or Level One Coaching Courses, or 4, 6 or 8-week hockey

programs. 3. Providing assistance to Regional Sport by selecting, coaching, and managing teams. 4. Coaching, Umpiring, Managing or Selecting School Teams Resources More videos have been purchased and this will continue as a priority in upgrading the resources available to members. There is still not enough people using the extensive library available.

Hopefully, the coaches association club representatives are able to promote the library to club members more effectively in 2001

THANK YOU

The purchase of an office Laptop has assisted in delivering a more professional efficient service to members I was fortunate enough to attend two events this year, which were both inspirational in 2 completely different ways. The first was the Olympic Games especially seeing the Hockeyroos play and receive their most deserved Gold Medal. My memory of the event is something I will treasure forever. The other event was attending the National Coaching Conference in Canberra. My attendance at the conference was due to the support I received by BWHA. I would like to thank those members on both Senior and Junior Management, for their understanding and support for my continued role as a Manager for Women’s Hockey Australia. To outgoing Junior Management President Glenda Vearing a big thank-you. She has had a most difficult job, trying to please everyone and mediate in very emotional situations. The level of understanding and importance she placed in the Player Development area was always of priority to Glenda and appreciated. To my fellow workers Amy Little, Therese Barber, Kathy Duggan and Leesa Gray for their assistance, patience and support. Also thanks to Jodie Vearing the Minkey, Modified Co-Ordinator for her hard work and dedicating her early mornings on top of her school and playing commitments. To President Robin Roberts and Vice President Marilyn Chatfield whose drive, determination and positive outlook will given time, bring progress to our association. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Downey Park Umpires Steward Report

When I took over the position of Downey Park Umpires Steward from Lyn Thomas who had done such an outstanding job of it for over 10 years, I knew the first year would be a HUGE learning curve – and how right I was! It is certainly not easy to allocate 54 umpires to each fixture round and please everybody in the process. Hopefully, it gets easier with time! It is very disheartening to know that so many allocated umpires are substituted, and the growing practice of offering money to have volunteers do umpiring instead of meeting one’s Club’s

Page 21: THE SIXTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE WOMEN’S … · 1 the sixty-seventh annual report of brisbane women’s hockey association inc office bearers for 2000 patroness ms gail

allocation is also very disturbing. Until players realise that umpiring is as much a part of the game as playing or even coaching, the situation will not improve. I wish to thank Michele Arnold and BWHA Management for their support and encouragement, and especially Lyn Thomas, whose constant support, encouragement and advice was greatly valued. Cheryl Kann.

Once again, the hockey season has been very disrupted especially for the turf players. Following an early start to complete our season prior to the Olympic Games, the unavailability of Australian and State representatives played havoc with regular fixture games. As a result of forced rescheduling, some teams played three games in eight days whilst others didn’t play for three weeks. Once again, Clubs must be congratulated for their tolerance and gracious acceptance of a very disjointed season. The closeness of the final points tables and the uncertainty of final four or five placings once again confirmed the wisdom of both turf and grass Grading Committees. Sincere thanks to our timekeepers, June Snarski at Downey Park and Mary Cockings at State Hockey Centre, for their diligence in keeping games on schedule. For “baby sitting” our masters on Monday nights, a special thank you to Joyce Proctor for a difficult task well done. Lyn Thomas

TECHNICAL DELEGATES REPORT

It is with much pleasure that I submit the Technical Delegates Report for the 2000 Southern Cross Hockey League. This year it was great to have Tweed Heat join our ranks and I hope they enjoyed the hockey and gained a lot of experience from the games. The games again this year were played in the spirit we all enjoy. One of the things that was amiss was I think we need to have a stretcher as part of our First Aid at all venues. 1. Items mentioned to me during the league were that had we considered playing ¼ (17 minute ¼)

instead of ½ games. If you were to consider this, I suggest for only the first 2 or 3 weeks until the girls get fit and while the temperature is hot, then change so the girls are ready for their season. If you were to consider this for the breaks you allowed 3 minutes 1st and 3rd ¼ and 5 minutes at half time break, this would only extend the game by about 5 minutes and with the one and half hours between starting times this would be ok.

2. Some players are wearing hard brimmed caps. If we had soft brims caps/shades available we could insist the hard peaks not be worn. (BWHA has soft brims shades available in all colours)

3. Could we put in our list of needs for the teams that both Captains and VC 1 and 2 wear ribbons on their back left shoulder as this is easy to see for the bench and umpires.

4. We need to come up with a “Set of Rules” governing “Player of the Series” both U18 and Senior. If points are equal at the end of the games, maybe then the number of 3 points, 2 points etc. scored and after that if still even maybe the T.D. speak with another person who has seen all or most of the games and they make a decision.

The green card automatic suspension was received by most players and coaches ok and did help the girls cool down, some did not know what to do A big thank you to all the Judges who helped out and to Lyn Thomas, Cheryl Kann and Mary Cockings for helping out at the Finals and to the Committee for the opportunity given to me to help out at this competition, also to all centres for the lovely snacks. Once again thank you for the opportunity to help in a small way. Denise Roberts

JJUUNNIIOORR PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT’’SS RREEPPOORRTT The 2000 season has certainly been one I will remember. Our first march past in many years, although small was well received and hopefully will continue to grow and develop along with the carnival atmosphere into a fitting start to the forthcoming season. I must thank all members of Junior Management for their time and the commitment they have made to the successful running of our Junior Competition this season. I must point out that every member of our management team with the exception of myself either held a position with a club or took on a duel role as a Selector or Manager with one of our representative teams. Our Management Team

57

with the assistance of volunteers successfully hosted the U15 and U11 Southern Cross days, thank you to those people and congratulations for making both days a wonderful experience for all. Competitions such as these supplied our players with the opportunity to meet and make new friends from other Regions. Also exposing these young people to a higher level of competition, and in some cases valuable life experiences of adjusting to successes and disappointments in a climate of support. Congratulations must go to Sharon Simpson and her team of coaches for the development work done with our up and coming players. The success achieved at State Championships across division is an indication that this program is achieving the goals set. Alyson Aleksic has been responsible for the development of Junior Umpires and from the success of our umpires at tournament level and the number of players that have achieved Junior Badges this year it has been a job well done. Managing her family, her own umpiring and playing commitments is a full-time job in its self but to contribute to the development of so many young umpires and continuously encourage those young people week in and week out is a tribute to her endurance. Especially when loud mouthed unthinking spectators can in a matter of seconds destroy the great work that’s been done by Alyson and her support team. I would like to point out that this work is all done on a voluntary basis. As a committee we have a responsibility to do what is best for the majority of our members, some 93 teams and it is recognised by most that it is impossible to please everybody and a person would be unwise to try. A few things have come up during the season most of which have been addressed and dealt with promptly and to everybody’s satisfaction. However the continuing saga of the clashing of our timeslots with that of school competition has caused continuing pressure during this season. After some recent discussions I have had with parents of children involved in this situation, I would like to strongly point out that Management is aware that those mostly affected is once again the children. However we can not make our decisions on an individual basis as pointed out earlier our responsibility to the majority. Personally I would recommend that these young player make a decision as to what competition best suites their commitments and that they take part in that competition and enjoy the experience. Junior Management has recommended to those schools taking part in our competition that they enter teams in the Intermediate Section or in J divisions played at the later time slots. All Clubs are aware of the commitments they make at the time of entering teams for the upcoming season. I would ask that clubs fulfil these commitments and avoid the disappointment caused by unnecessary forfeits. I have enjoyed my involvement with Brisbane Junior Women’s Hockey and would like to thank all the wonderful and dedicated people I have been lucky enough to meet and work with. Thank you for your friendship and support, I wish the new committee a successful season in 2001. Glenda Vearing President Junior Section

BWHA

JJUUNNIIOORR SSEECCRREETTAARRYY RREEPPOORRTT

JJUUNNIIOORR TTRREEAASSUURREERR’’SS RREEPPOORRTT This year was my first time on Junior Management for BWHA and I started later than most as the season was already started when I joined the team. I would like to express my thanks to the people who have helped me through the initial transition from a complete novice to hopefully a part of a productive team. As most of you are aware most of the Junior income comes from the Hockey shop sales. I think that because we are restricted to only one major wholesaler the takings aren’t as good as they could have been. Purchasing from more than one wholesaler we could possibly be getting a more competitive price at which to gain a higher margin. I am sure the people that where involved in the U13 and U15 championships will have given you the feed back for the 2000 season. I can however comment on the U11 Southern Cross that was held at Downey Park. I found it wonderful to be involved in the lead up as well as on the day the U11’s played their championship. The whole day went off without a hitch and all the children involved seemed to have a great day. I think the rest of the Management, Coaches and Umpires should congratulate themselves on an extremely successful day. Thank you again to everyone who helped me through the season and hope to see you all next year. April Parmenter Junior Treasurer 2000

MMIINNKKEEYY//MMOODDIIFFIIEEDD RREEPPOORRTT I hope everybody enjoyed the 2000 season, I found it an enjoyable and educational time. With no games missed due to rain we were able to complete all rounds. It was apparent that there were significant differences in the skill levels of teams so grading was necessary. The grading was based on the results of the first 4 weeks of competition. Thank you to the many Coaches, Managers and Parents for their assistance during the season with the construction and dismantling of the goals each week and the erection of the ball trap on field 11. Thank you also to those people that assisted with these tasks when the teams allocated failed to arrive. I hope that people were happy with the skills test and presentation day being held once again at Downey Park, the intention was include the Minkey and Modified completion in finals celebrations at Downey. I once again thank the members of Junior and Senior Management that assisted with the setting up of skills and the presentation of ribbons. Also a big thank you to Robin Roberts, Sharon Easton, Sandy Smith, Glenys Harton, Sharon Simpson and Amy Little for their assistance with the operating of the BBQ and drinks tent and for taking the time to join in the celebrations.

Thank you to Jenny Tidey and Mary Cockings for your help in organising the skills day. Jodie Vearing

HHOOCCKKEEYY SSHHOOPP RREEPPOORRTT "I swear the evidence I give in this Court shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." This year's highlight was to appear in court to give evidence against the three young men (boys really) who broke into the Shop and made off with several thousand dollars worth of stock. The Police were very quick in their recovery of much of the stock. Some was able to be returned to the shelves, but a lot was damaged and had to be sent to auction by the Insurance Company. Because the financial arrangements following the robbery were between the Insurance Company and BWHA, I am not able to report just how much profit was made by the Shop this year. However, I can report that a total sales for the 2000 season were $21,421.74. This is well below our achievement in 1999. In that year we had a most successful Golden Oldies Carnival at Downey Park, and did not have the uncertainty of the GST. Anyway, we sold a lot of Hockey Gear, mended a lot of sticks and had a lot of fun. My thanks to the Executive for their support; the 'Volunteers' for their assistance and to the customers for making it all worthwhile. By the time this report is published, I will be gone. Now that our children live in Japan, Barbara and I have decided to join them for a few years. Managing the BWHA Hockey Shop for the past four years has been a, mostly, enjoyable experience. Being too old and too slow to continue umpiring, it has been the means of maintaining one's links with the Sport I started playing 50 years ago. My thanks to BWHA for the opportunity to make a contribution. To the BWHA Officials, the players, the supporters; 'Thanks a lot - Good Hockey - Goodbye.' Regards, Jim Northcott

JUNIOR UMPIRES REPORT

The year began with thirty-three (33) nominations of people who wished to be tested for their Brisbane Junior Umpires Badge with one (1) for their Brisbane Intermediate Umpires Badge. This lead to problems being able to accommodate these people for their three (3) required tests around playing, coaching and other duties they had.

Page 60: THE SIXTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE WOMEN’S … · 1 the sixty-seventh annual report of brisbane women’s hockey association inc office bearers for 2000 patroness ms gail

I had a team of assesses who were on a roster to help me which I am truly grateful. They were Caroline Schomberg, Catherine Costello, Louise Woodford, Jo Argent, Kassie Tupper and Fiona Chatfield. These people gave up five (5) Saturday mornings to help me with the testing which freed me up to deal with any other problem that may have arisen. The nominations for Brisbane representative umpires closed at the same time as the players did so we used some of these to umpire the selection trials. This is a great resource to be able to give feedback to the up and coming umpires who wish to go on further with their umpiring. Even though we had an adequate number of nominations, we ran into difficulties with the Under 15’s due to work commitments, playing or unforeseen problems. Kirsten Aaker, Kylie Jones and Rebecca Lambert went to the Under 13 Championship at the Gold Coast where all three received their Queensland Junior Umpires Badge. Samantha Backen, Kylie Patteson and Kelly Smith went to the Under 15 Championship at Ipswich. Samantha received valuable feedback however could not receive any badge as she already held a higher one. Kylie received her Queensland Intermediate Umpires Badge with Kelly receiving her Queensland Junior Umpires Badge. Since we held two (2) Southern Cross Days at Downey Park, we needed to cover our quota of umpires and other centres umpires. Thank you to all the umpires who gave up an hour, a couple of hours or the day to umpire. The umpires for the Under 11 Southern Cross were all new umpires who were going to receive their Brisbane Junior Badge this year. There were quite a few complaints about the standard of umpires that clubs were putting down on games. The clubs were not considering the experience of the people they were allocating to divisions with some sending novice umpires to high division games. This caused a lot of problems for both the players and the confidence of the umpires. Clubs need to be aware of who they are allocating and assist umpires from their clubs who require help. An idea has been raised as to next year a new system being trialed. This will be that all clubs umpire their own games. This will hopefully encourage each club to put the required standard on the games and also develop more umpires. This system will possibly be trialed for at least the first round with it being extended to the whole year. The standard of umpires for the semifinals and finals was high and I would like to thank all of them for their professionalism and the time that they gave. Also to the umpires who I called on late in the week to replace another one. Congratulations to the twenty-two (22) girls who received their Brisbane Junior Umpires Badge this year. Congratulations to Kylie Jones and Rebecca Lambert for receiving the Vicki Spice Memorial Shield. Congratulations to Susan Taylor for being named the Most Improved Umpire for 2000. I would like to thank everyone who umpired this year and I hope that you continue to improve and learn as you umpire in the future. Thank you must also go to Brisbane Junior Management for their help throughout the year and for everyone who looked after Joshua for me so I could continue my work on the grounds.
