Performance Studies AS/A2If you enjoy creative exploration, experimenting with existing performance techniques, rehearsing and performing in all three art forms (music, dance and drama), then Performance Studies will enable you to practically investigate how to make successful performance work. It is not essential to be a triple-threat performer, yet you will be given opportunities to develop skills in all art forms. You will also be required to study theory elements which will equip you with the knowledge and understanding to discover the world of creative arts. Repertoire work of existing material is also an area of study and allows you demonstrate your performing skills across the art forms. At A2 you will study the history of American Musical Theatre, exploring how the art forms are integrated both through theory and practical work. Performance Studies is a highly recognised A Level that offers a ‘light relief’ against the intensity of studying A Levels.

Physical Education AS/A2Are you a good practical performer with a desire to learn about human performance and socio-cultural factors which promote involvement in sport?

PE provides the analysis to understand why athletes such as Usain Bolt have the physical and mental attributes to continue to perform at the world level. We examine how to optimise performance and students learn a great deal about their own limitations and how these can be improved.

PE students are energetic, have a good sense of humour, enjoy positive relationships with staff and engage in the variety of activities on offer. Where possible, learning is centered around practical activity. However, a significant amount of theory based lessons are essential to cover the broad, challenging and interesting content.

Entrance criteria:Grades A*-C in English and Science. It is not essential to have studied GCSE PE.Practical performance must be of a high standard in at least two sports and still be competing regularly.

Philosophy & Ethics AS/A2A subject which involves the study of Ancient Greek to post-modern philosophical thinkers on how they approach issues of life, death and the soul and addresses all the questions that may arise from this this. We then progress to study contemporary modern ethical dilemmas related to abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering and sexuality. Based on these ethical issues we begin to apply ethical theory from great thinkers such as John Stuart Mill, Immanuel Kant, St. Thomas and Aquinas and others in the field of ethics.

Have you ever wondered why we exist? Where we came from and is there more to life than what we experience? Is our world that we live in a complete illusion? If this has entered your mind you are thinking with Plato, Aristotle and other great classical thinkers.

Do you ever hypothesise the wonders of ethical dilemmas? Why people act the way they do in certain situations? Do you have a reasoned opinion on everything in life? If you are thinking like this you will gain a lot of insight from the study of ethics and how ethics deals with modern situations that arise in our contemporary world.

If you are wanting a career that involves working with others and being able to think critically in order to analyse actions, behaviour and thinking, Philosophy & Ethics is the subject you need to be part of.
