In September 2018, it will be my privilege to open our doors to welcome the first ever students to the new Chichester Free School Sixth Form. Many Sixth Formers will have come from other schools located across the district and beyond, but all will be welcomed equally to our exceptional new school. Our aim is to provide an environment for a rigorous, disciplined and inspirational Sixth Form. A Level study will be balanced with an enrichment activity programme designed to develop the character and leadership qualities required by our young people to meet life’s challenges, and of course to secure progression to University or to the world of work, including adult apprenticeships and internships. The Sixth Form curriculum will be delivered by the highest quality teachers at our state-of-the-art campus at the Carmelite Convent, located on the outskirts of Chichester City Centre. With an emphasis on academic and creative subjects, the syllabus will focus upon preparing our students for entry into the most competitive universities, or a meaningful alternative. Every student is different, but all deserve and will receive the tailored individual attention that our vision to nurture, challenge and inspire promises. The details within our prospectus as well as dedicated Sixth Form website pages will provide much of the information that you need. We will supplement this information through Open Evenings and other scheduled events, held at the school’s temporary campus at Vinnetrow Road during the Autumn term; and of course, through scheduled visits during the course of a working School day, when the Head of Sixth Form, Steven Apsey and I look forward to meeting you in person.

I have been a teacher of secondary, including A levels, for 16 years and bring a wealth of experience across the age range from Year 7 to Year 13. In addition to my teaching role I have been a pastoral head for Years 8 - 10, and for the last two years leading in the Sixth Form. I fully understand the unique pressures that challenge the students of today as they mature into young adults, and understand the complex rhythm of Sixth Form life and how to maximise opportunities for young people to succeed in achieving their goals.

The opportunity and challenge of setting up a new Sixth Form in an already successful school, with a clear ethos and set of values, is one I relish. In my previous role heading the Sixth Form I was able to personally mentor the students in their university and degree

level apprenticeship applications and am proud of my record of bespoke advice tailored to the needs of each individual. The size of Chichester Free School Sixth Form will mean the opportunity to bring this to each one of our students, and make sure they are fully informed and prepared for the next step.

The commitment to the personal development of our learners, coupled with quality teaching and learning, will build a successful Sixth Form of which we can all be justifiably proud.

Through our well-established, competitive yet supportive House system, we aim to support and nurture all our students and to provide leadership opportunities for these most senior students. Through our curriculum, we will give them the appropriate level of challenge and intellectual inspiration. We also look to inspire and motivate our students towards being the very best that they can be through the opportunity to participate in sport, the arts and through our Inspire Programme, which will include community and leadership activities as well as individualised careers advice and university preparation.

We offer an academic programme of A Level study where the emphasis will be on high academic attainment, independent study and preparation for exam success. Subject choices offered will be those which facilitate entry into universities, including the top ‘Russell Group’ universities, or to higher education institutions, or other employment organisations. All subject choices offer routes and courses that lead to a meaningful alternative career path, opening a wider range of higher education and career options to our leavers.

The Russell Group of universities has identified two lists of subjects which are the most frequently required for entry to degree courses. They recommend that at least two subjects are selected for A Level study from the list of ‘facilitating subjects’ shown opposite. However, students are welcome to choose combinations from both facilitating and complementary lists.

Academic study will be balanced with enrichment activities which are designed to extend and broaden the A Level programme. These activities will be delivered through our Inspire Programme, where four hours of the school week will be dedicated to a broad range of competitive sports as well as music, drama, leadership opportunity, community service and preparation for UCAS University entry and career development. It is also hoped that students will have the opportunity of being able to take additional assessed qualifications as part of enrichment and subject choices.

A typical A Level class will be fourteen students in size, allowing time for one-to-one tutor attention for all students, across every subject. In most cases, students will study 3 A Level subjects with the expectation that most will follow an EPQ or equivalent.

*Further Mathematics may only be taken alongside Mathematics as a fourth subject.

The choice of subjects made available may vary depending on demand and timetabling constraints. If demand is high enough, we will explore the possibility of offering more subject choices.

Classrooms and study areas are being designed to ensure that both teaching and learning flourish. Subject-specific teaching spaces from science and design technology workshops to art studios and sports facilities will benefit from being equipped with the newest technologies. As well as relaxed study areas, our dedicated Sixth Form spaces include a common room with wi-fi, where students can relax and spend time with each other outside of class.

Our new campus is easily accessed via foot and cycle paths from the Chichester train and bus stations and we run a car-share scheme to encourage students to travel together to and from the school.

The length of each day for our Sixth Form students will vary depending upon subject and enrichment activity choices. Students will be given 6 hours per subject of classroom time per week and a further four hours will be dedicated to our Inspire Programme activities. Students will also be guaranteed one hour of tutor time every week. All other time is designated as ‘non-contact’ time, when Sixth Form students will have freedom-of-movement and the option of leaving the school campus.
